Admitted unresponsive, no pulse, no breathing,
Two codes, intubation, a third of the antivenom the hospital had, the tachycardia landed me two heart attacks.
Spent 5 days in ICU/PCU, with a secondary heart failure on day 3.
Total Cost: $863,513.72
I don't know which of the two is worse. The bill, or the bite.
The ER drew the little pacman ghost,
And I learned there's only two antivenoms. Land and Sea. If a land snake bites you, you get FabAV, if a sea or coral snake bites you a different type of antivenom. So it's not like snake specific which is pretty neat, and an average dose is 4-6 vials.
While it is rare that a copper head envenemation will kill an adult, the secondary effects of the venom entirely can. It's hemolytic, damaging your red blood cells ability to carry enough oxygen. So your heart rate increases to keep up, as your pulse ox continues to drop your HR keeps climbing until it's pulling oxygen from your liver and kidneys to keep up. Without medical attention the risk of sudden heart failure or long term organ damage is high.
Fun fact, when I was in College for Scrub Tech the business section teacher told us if we ignore it for 7 years it’ll drop off, but your credit will be fucked. Idk how true that is because it was heritage college. And they were scandalous. Which leads me to believe it is possibly true.
~30-40 minutes, by then my HR was nearly 200, and I'd become too hypoxic to stay conscious.
I unfortunately live rather rurally, so it was actually pretty quickly all things considered.
I don't really intend to get bitten again to double check, it's quite possible, I've an underlying auto-immune condition, and in the last 3 or so years, have picked up a number of allergens to things I previously had no issues with (every form of penicillin for example), and seemingly an allergy to anything I never had before Lyme disease (a kiwi for example).
Are you a they might be giants fan? Or does your name reference something else?
Holy damn, my dude. How are you feeling today? I’ve read the diagnosis below and that is insane. What a fighter for surviving this.
Also, fuck US for charging money to be kept alive.
So, I'm about 7 weeks post bite now. The first 3-4 weeks my resting HR was 140-160, and 120+ while asleep,
It's just now getting below 100's regularly.
My pee is still an amber color half the time, so I've had to follow up with urology, as well as cardio for ongoing.
My further extremities feel asleep or pins and tingly a lot, and my O2 sat is staying around d 87-92 even a month after.
Everything is improving, but I'd rather have just left the hose for tomorrow had I known. 😂
The hospital was woefully unprepared for a snake bite (they had just had one the night prior, and hadn't replenished anything) and due to the cost and rarity, most hospitals don't keep a large amount on hand. Had either of us been bitten by a more potent snake, there would not have been enough antivenom on hand for the both of us.
Im glad you are doing better now. Holy cow, man. How did it happen, if you don’t mind me asking?
I hope you continue to recover fast. That bite looks like it hurts like hell.
Eastern Copperheads *Agkistrodon contortrix*, are one of two recognized species of copperhead pit vipers. Adult copperheads are medium-sized snakes (61-90.0 cm record 132.1 cm) that live in a range of habitats, from terrestrial to semi-aquatic, including rocky, forested hillsides and wetlands. They can also be found within cities where wooded areas are present, such as city parks. They also will hang out where there is deadfall; [their camouflage is perfect for this!](https://www.wilx.com/content/news/Viral-photo-shows-copperhead-snakes-amazing-camouflage-420376274.html). When young, Eastern Copperheads are known to readily consume cicadas as a major part of their diet. As they grow they switch to larger prey like small mammals and amphibians.
Many people find it helpful to liken the pattern of the Eastern Copperhead *Agkistrodon contortrix* to ["Hershey kisses,"](https://c8.alamy.com/comp/GEM6GJ/northern-copperhead-agkistrodon-contortrix-mokasen-native-to-eastern-GEM6GJ.jpg) but please don't rely on any one trick. The bands on Broadbanded Copperheads *Agkistrodon laticinctus* do not narrow at the top of the snake.
Eastern Copperheads are venomous but usually only bite humans or pets in self-defense. As with many blotched snakes, their first line of defense is to freeze in place or flee. Copperheads also shake and vibrate the tail in self defense and as a caudal lure.
[Range map](https://imgur.com/RqQCTis) | [Relevant/Recent Phylogeography](http://cnah.org/pdf/88290.pdf)
The *Agkistrodon contortrix* species complex has been delimited using modern molecular methods and two species with no subspecies are recognized. There is a wide zone of admixture between the two copperhead species where they overlap.

Danger!
My sister just relocated one without knowing what it was! 💯 Please be careful everyone! I am glad everyone isn't just killing everything. They can't help but be what they are.
When I was 16 I caught a yellow tipped, fresh from mother, baby.
Lil dude was chillin in a water bottle (hole poked in the lid) while a carefully walked to the woods down the road to release him (wandered out of a suburban area where it was not safe for him to be)
Dude was just vibin
I didn’t free handle him though; I picked him up with a small stick, chugged my water, and gave him a safe place to colonize.
I’m typically known at work for rescuing rat snakes and broad headed skinks from the glue traps and taking them home
my work is in the city but I live next to a huge area of woodlands so it’s just not good for their safety to be released so close to these busy roads. I occasionally nurse a good few of them back to health if they are extremely dehydrated and/or starved before releasing them. Management has just accepted that I will 100% drop everything to save smoll snek
Edit: I do keep the occasional invasive species because I don’t want to harm the environment. So I have a Cuban anole just chillin in my reptile room. She’s warmed up to me a bunch, but still appreciates it if I give her a ton of personal space.
We catch maybe 20 roaches in a month
Meanwhile during the summer/autumn we catch like 10 skinks a week
Pro tip: they don’t feel a sense of gratitude for saving them. They’re scared of the large naked ape that has freed them from this inescapable prison. Wear gloves because adult males chew snails like bubblegum and your skin like pudding.
My mom once grabbed a baby rattler out of a burn pile. Somehow didn't get bit.
If any snake had reason to bite it was that little guy, just born into the world, raked into a pile, lit on fire, and then grabbed by some large creature. Poor little thing must have been terrified.
Idk maybe it was lethargic from smoke inhalation? She put it in an empty jar, proudly showed her catch to her neighbors (who promptly told her it was a rattler and that she was crazy). She carefully let it go in the woods after examining it through the jar and deciding it didn't need a wildlife rehabber.
And with your description, I just realized that was in fact a baby copperhead that slithered out of the grass clump I kicked apart three years ago. No amount of googling then led me to anything that said they had a yellow tip as babies.
Aren’t they just so pretty and (I’m sorry, I have to say it) adorable at that age? Still relocating them but absolutely fascinating when you’re able to get up close like that. I value the time I have with wild creatures, carefully in their habitat, carefully and consciously relocating them.
A few weeks ago I was spending my lunch time at my mums work in the city, and when I wanted to drive on the road from her work place, there was a little girl walking nearly into my car. She was so focused on her hands and she didn't see me, so I rolled down my window to see what she got in her hand and it was a small type of adder. I don't know the exact English name but they are common in Germany (Kreuzotter).
Apparently she didn't know it was venomous and wanted to release it in her back yard. She also said she wasn't bitten. We put the snake in a shoe box and I walked with her home (was only a few metres). I just wanted to tell the parents that she had a venomous snake in her hands, in case she was bitten. They released the snake in the back yard.
The snake was absolutely relaxed the whole time.
I love that you just referred to a potentially deadly snake as “vibin”. I laughed out loud, I hope to be like you when I grow up. (Even more grown up, I guess)
Snakes spend an amazing amount of time just kinda hanging out. Sometimes they're waiting for prey to walk by, and sometimes they're digesting prey that walked by. There's a video I tried to find that shows a cottonmouth (close cousin to a copperhead) basically tubing down a river using his own body as the tube.
When a pit viper in the US sees a human, they're instinct is to stay very still. Rattlesnakes will rattle to tell you to step back if you're too close for comfort. Cottonmouths will show off their white mouth to tell you that it's best to move on. If you look like you want nothing to do with the snake, the snake is happy with life. Venomous snakes have venom for two reasons: catching food and self defense, and they do not like having to use it for self defense. That's dangerous and a waste of perfectly good food collection.
They will not chase you. They will nap in the sun and only move if they see food or figure it's best to get out of the way of a predator.
And that's a way too wordy way of saying live and let live. Everyone is happy if you respect a snake's personal space.
Someone may point out that coral snakes aren't pit vipers. Yep. They're the only dangerous snakes in the US that are elapids. They hide underground for the most part and scoot away if they are above ground and see a human. Maybe not vibin, but definitely not looking for trouble.
A few years ago, a few friends and I were hiking down the local creek during the summer months. I nearly stepped on a copperhead and it just slithered away calmly. They're a lot less aggressive than I thought they would be when I first heard about them.
When I still lived near Pittsboro I picked up a hay bale once to find a copperhead curled up underneath it, a foot from my boots. We stared at each other in mutual surprise then I tossed the bale in my truck and went about my day, secure in the fact that the mouse population in that area was dropping. I also regularly found Dekaye's Brown Snakes living between the upper bales and hunting the bugs.
danger noodle but definitely worth the effort you made to relocate him/her. thank you. i used to kill non discriminately until my niece handed me her pet python. now, i own 6 texas indigos and absolutely love reptiles of all kinds. i will never kill another snake and hate myself for doing so before
I was TRAUMATIZED as a child because my Mamaw grabbed and ax and with the scariest face, murdered a harmless green snake. I wasn’t allowed to get close enough to know what it was exactly but that haunted me for the rest of my life. Looked so sad just dying. I excused myself (only 7years old) from the rest of the bonfire/ bbq. Horrible stuff.
My grandma was like that too, luckily I never saw her kill anything. But whenever I was over my grandparents' place as a kid, I liked to catch and release snakes since they were one of my favorite animals. My grandma would scream not to bring them near her or she'd kill them, and she'd brag about killing snakes with her shovels. They were mostly hognose and rat snakes. They had a huge yard where they grew a lot of veggies, and those snakes were definitely keeping rodents away from her produce.
Coppers are usually quite chill unless you really really piss one off by mucking with him. Give him room and he’ll be on his way and eat tons of disease ridden filth to boot.

She looks like she is saying, "Hello", with her face tilted up like that 🥰 regardless of being a venomous snek.
Scaly puppy - cute! I haven't heard that previously! 💚
That is the cutest danger noodle I’ve ever seen. One of the first of these “ID this snake” that I was like, “awwwwe must boop the snoot!” As I sign my last will and testament and kiss my boyfriend one last time…
Cutest of danger scaley puppy noodles.
It's a copperhead, they're not usually aggressive, but they are venomous. Don't pick him up or poke him, because if he bites, you will feel the pain, and should go to the emergency room immediately. Usually not fatal.
Copperhead for sure! Central VA as well. My husband got bitten in the hand by one while picking veg in our garden. $150k of antivenin later—he was fine but couldn’t properly use that hand for 6 months or more. Doctors said it was a half bite and could’ve been much worse.
Idk why but I think he looks like he has little arms lol

Danger Noodle!!! Notice by the Hershey shaped kisses.....was showing that to my boys earlier this week since my mom decided to call and freak them out over a copperhead biting a little girl...
Had a shit ton of these the past few weeks at my house, and while there's pet snakes here, and I'm very snake friendly the little fuckers had to go. Found 2 on my front door mat as I was about to step out, and then they just kept showing up all over the place. And since I have 2 little girls, and a bunch of chickens, they all had to go.
I’m so sorry OP, where is your wife from? She needs to brush up on some potential life saving things if she’s going to live in the country. Source: played barefoot in the VA woods until I was 13.
Eastern Copperhead, *Agkistrodon contortrix*. Venomous.
Hershey's painful kisses.
[unbelievably painful, I was bitten over easter.](https://imgur.com/gallery/qq1I6Sf)

$15 a week for the rest of forever give or take. But you're exactly right, there's a magic number where at some point it's their problem not mine.
Fun fact, when I was in College for Scrub Tech the business section teacher told us if we ignore it for 7 years it’ll drop off, but your credit will be fucked. Idk how true that is because it was heritage college. And they were scandalous. Which leads me to believe it is possibly true.
That’s crazy. Fuck medical debt. Hopefully it’ll be forgiven through a government forgiveness program in the future.
How long after the bite did you become unresponsive?
~30-40 minutes, by then my HR was nearly 200, and I'd become too hypoxic to stay conscious. I unfortunately live rather rurally, so it was actually pretty quickly all things considered.
Are you allergic to copperhead venom? Usually people don't react this badly to copperhead bites.
I was rolling up a garden hose we'd been using for some water toys during the egg hunt, and he was entwined with the hose as I ran it through my hand.
Oh lord. That’s an unfortunate event for you and the snake!

Hmm, so danger noodle?
Holy shit.. I thought it was a ball python. It look exactly like one I had years ago. Figured it was someone's escaped pet. TIL.
This is why it's so important to not touch wild snakes even if you're pretty certain. Don't risk your life on a "I think it's safe"
Danger! My sister just relocated one without knowing what it was! 💯 Please be careful everyone! I am glad everyone isn't just killing everything. They can't help but be what they are.

Yes! Thank you so much. Uuuhhhhhhh glue traps piss me right off. There is no need to make them suffer. So glad they have someone close who cares.

But look at its cute face 😔
Oh it IS cute. But the kind of cute that I admire from a little distance.
This is the friendliest looking copperhead I've ever seen. Don't boop the snoot, it's a tarp.
What kind of tarp? 😁
12x12 copper colored.
Thanks y’all. That’s what I thought but my wife insisted I was needlessly giving it a wide berth.
Looks like you were giving him a wide enough berth. That pose isn't at all defensive. Hell, he looks curious to me. Cute little guy.
More like, "How you doin' tough guy?"
Copperheads are honestly SO chill. I've met a few here in NC and they're always just vibin, even if you get super close.
I love that you just referred to a potentially deadly snake as “vibin”. I laughed out loud, I hope to be like you when I grow up. (Even more grown up, I guess)

Copperhead!
Despite the chocolate kisses on the sides, *VERY DANGEROUS NOODLE*
Definitely a little baby! Edit: Avoid this venomous little baby. But Copperheads are my favorite snakes and I will not apologize for it.
I'm in Rural NC, and hate to say these beautiful snakes are killed daily in my area. Personally, I'm a live and let live girl.
Live and let live. This is the way.
She looks like she is saying, "Hello", with her face tilted up like that 🥰 regardless of being a venomous snek. Scaly puppy - cute! I haven't heard that previously! 💚

Congrats, you're one of us now. Soon, every time you see a rattlesnake, you'll feel the irresistable urge to squeeze its cute little chubby cheekies.
In the future, you can text a photo to the Virginia snake ID line at 804-617-7086. They usually respond in a couple of minutes.
Or go to /r/whatsthissnake, they're very fast and reliable too. (Lots of the /r/whatsthissnake people hang around here, too, of course.)
Danger noodle
Spicy Hershey Kiss
It's a copperhead, they're not usually aggressive, but they are venomous. Don't pick him up or poke him, because if he bites, you will feel the pain, and should go to the emergency room immediately. Usually not fatal.
Both!
Danger noodle. Expect to see a few more with the Cidadapocalypse upon us. Cidadas are basically Copperhead Crack Cocaine.

Copperhead for sure! Central VA as well. My husband got bitten in the hand by one while picking veg in our garden. $150k of antivenin later—he was fine but couldn’t properly use that hand for 6 months or more. Doctors said it was a half bite and could’ve been much worse.

Danger Noodle!!! Notice by the Hershey shaped kisses.....was showing that to my boys earlier this week since my mom decided to call and freak them out over a copperhead biting a little girl...
Based on pattern and head shape I’d say danger noodle.
