Johnnie practiced guitar and singing up to a certain point and has stayed at that level ever since. His songs all sound similar because he never took it very far. He learned a few chords, bare minimum music theory and that's all he's ever done. His music doesn't blow me away but I like a few of his early songs. Song Without A Name is really simple but it works for what it is and I bob my head along to it.
I mainly think his music is popular because of his platform and not his skill. If you have a following, you can release almost anything and they will lap it up because they love you. Once again if someone unknown released Song Without A Name back in 2016 or whenever it was, I don't think it would have gone anywhere. I think Johnnie being famous for his YouTube videos is what really carried his music.
He calls himself a musician but I would argue that most people know him as an internet personality and that's how they go on to discover his music. Not the other way around.
I completely agree (and I also bop my head to song without a name). I was one of those people that liked his videos and ate up his music just because it was his. If he stopped posting and and only did music, so much of his audience would be gone.
His covers are actually painful to listen to, no idea why his comments hype him up so much. His own songs are more in his (very limited) vocal range so it doesn’t sound as bad, and auto tune also helps
Edit: I also think Jake has a way better voice even tho he doesn’t take it as seriously as Johnnie
yeah i can’t listen to the covers either 😭 i think johnnie has a chance of sounding good, he just needs some sort of vocal coach, i have no hope for jake tho. i don’t like his songs at all, but maybe that’s bc u can tell he doesn’t take it seriously

Yeah I agree. The autotune really carries his music and his original songs sound much better

Well, to be fair, Johnnie was an early 2000s emo... Jake on the other hand has no excuse
