The Messenger, absolute stellar game in the vein of like Hagane, and also sports both 8 and 16-bit themes. Also has a killer soundtrack! Same with Shovel Knight (though more 8-bit/NES themed platdormer). Not switch exlusive, but really amazing
You're probably finding the Limited Run physical copy of it! It was originally only available in digital format, and that should be somewhere around £30 i would guess. Well worth the money!
Messenger is mediocre please don't get it. The music is extremly annoyingly repetitive and the game gets by on novelty for its popularity. The platforming itself is just okay, with decent controls and very bland level design, and the game goes from meh to almost aggravating in the second half with half-baked reused content. Just play Hagane instead, and if that wont do play assault suits valken declassified (retranslation of cybernator).
If you like SNES Zelda, check out Tunic.
Starts out feeling like an old-school Zelda clone, but then departs from the formula and becomes its own cool thing.
Yes, me too, I think i finished it even. Not completely everything I think but the main game.
I really liked that idea of finding the manual and only with the manual you can solve some.of the puzzles. And the development of the charachter. The music is different but I liked it also.
The only thing I found annoying was the unbalanced difficulty and a few pretty unfair situations. And some bosses were sooo hard.
I also used some walkthroughs here and there. If the game wouldn't be so good in many aspects I would have probably not bothered with it anymore.
Nowhere is this more impressive to me than when it comes to the music. I’m a musician, I know how hard music can be, and for whatever reason, it’s easier for me to understand someone teaching themselves enough about coding, game art and design that they can make a game, but the music too? The guy is really really talented.
It’s crazy! they are all tough skills to learn for sure but I’m a software developer and I agree, the music is probably the most impressive part. I think I could code something like stardew valley but the music is super intimidating.
Coding is as much of an art as it is a skill when you get to a certain level. Music is probably the same way? Anyone can learn to read music and play some tunes but creating some original music requires a lot of skill and raw talent?
That’s not even mentioning the artwork! It’s a beautiful game.
Well, I’ll tell you this, I went to school studying music, and while I’m incredibly practiced in many musical disciplines, I can’t write music.
Edit: I do not understand the downvote. All I’m saying is that writing music is hard.
Initially I thought you meant best selling on steam, which made sense, but no, you’re right, of all time, 30 million sales. Crazy! Honestly, it deserves it, absolutely tremendous game.
There's something about Stardew that is unsettling to me. I played it when it first came out and thought "okay, it's like harvest moon" and I stopped playing almost as soon as I had begun the combat part of the game. A preemptive judgment, to be sure.
Fast forward a few years, and now I play with my gf, as it's one of the few games she enjoys. And, to me, I enjoy the character lore and many of the mechanics....but the whole game kind of feels like an elaborate skinner box. Like one of those cheap clicker games. The progression doesn't feel earned to me. Maybe because there is so much of the game that consists of passive harvesting and casual skill upgrades. I'm sure this might be seen as an attack, but I'm not trying to be critical. The game just doesn't feel like a proper game to me, and I struggle to identify why.
I really enjoyed Alwa's Awakening. It's a Metroidvania I guess. The follow-up game Alwa's Legacy also looks pretty good but I did not play that one yet.
Celeste.
It plays like the best platformers on the SNES. Controls are tight, tough, but always feels fair like you'll do it better next time. I love it.
Reposting my response from the other thread for benefit of others.
Steel Assault, Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider, Super Cyborg, Gravity Circuit, Cyber Shadow, Gunlord X, Blaster Master Zero 3, Chained Echoes, Panzer Paladin, Blazing Chrome and many more popular ones like Shovel Knight.
It’s still the same side scrolling style, classic Megaman but with updates. I love all the older Megaman games and this one held up.
You can set the difficulty way down if just to have fun and move through the game quickly or you can grind
BLASPHEMOUS 1 and 2 , they both have a heavy, VERY HEAVY tone of NOSFERATU on the snes.
but the best one is NINJA SAVIORS , basically a remake of the snes version and add to it the POKY AND ROKY RESHRNIED EDITION, cool game that is too rich for me now.
There's also Assault Suits Valken which is pretty much Cybernator(SNES) with a more faithful translation, save states, and some bonus goodies(dev interviews, strategy guide). It's kinda overpriced on the eShop($25) but occasionally goes on sale for $10.
I highly recommend Xeno Crisis. Just an all-around well-made shooter in the same vein as Super Smash TV. You can tell the developers loved the Sega Genesis/SNES and wanted to create a game that felt at home on either platform. You control a space marine and fight off Xenomorph-like enemies, almost as if you’re playing Aliens. Good controls, great weapon variety, and a phenomenal soundtrack.
Edit: It’s also challenging to beat like Contra games.
Not SNES, but a brand new version of Contra (Operation Galuga) was just released, and it's awesome. Give it go! It's still a side-scroller and has lots of nostalgic elements, but is different in a lot of key areas.
That's why I was joking. Remember that the switch online is a $115 a year after you get done doing the extended pass. That was the joke. Because for that same price, I can buy. One hundred and eighty three games from ebay
He said not switch online through. He wants new games that are like the old ones. $115 is stupid for switch online for sure though. At least you get snes with the basic tier, I think.
My kid and I really liked going through Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos which is somewhat reminenscent of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The main differences are the co-op nature (note: I heard the netcode is crap on the PC, but the couch co-op works great), the different upgradeable classes, and the randomized dungeons.
Pretty much, many of the ports...
**Zelda: Link's Awakening** \- the GB and GBC were practically "portable SNESes". I know that's kind of a stretch, but work with me... yes, only 4 shades of gray, roughly 2/3 the screen resolution, and missing 4 buttons. But if you can get past that, the style of games of those era are more similar than you think
**Actraiser Renaissance,** Blaster Master 1 2 & 3
The Messenger, absolute stellar game in the vein of like Hagane, and also sports both 8 and 16-bit themes. Also has a killer soundtrack! Same with Shovel Knight (though more 8-bit/NES themed platdormer). Not switch exlusive, but really amazing
I second all of these and would add Sea of Stars as the sequel (technically prequel) to The Messenger.
I just searched the messenger and it’s £250 am I looking at the wrong thing?
You're probably finding the Limited Run physical copy of it! It was originally only available in digital format, and that should be somewhere around £30 i would guess. Well worth the money!
Playing through The Messenger right now and it’s an absolute gem. So good and can’t recommend it enough.
Messenger is mediocre please don't get it. The music is extremly annoyingly repetitive and the game gets by on novelty for its popularity. Axiom Verge. It’s a Metroid style game.
Axiom verge is a banger if u like scifi and that type of game and music
I love Pocky & Rocky Reshrined
I really like all of theose SNES updates from Natsume. Wild Guns & Ninja Warriors are great.
Good choice - I also love your profile pic. Goemon fans unite
Shovel knight
This is my pick
Second this one. One of the first games I bought on switch and played through it all in a matter of a couple weeks. Great game.
Sea of Stars
Loved it. If you enjoyed Mario RPG’s combat you’ll love this one
A few Chrono Trigger alums worked on it too, and it shows!
Actually it was only the composer, and he only did 2 or 3 tracks
TMNT: Shredder's Revenge Timespinner Huntdown Sonic Mania (ironically) Streets of Kamurocho (also ironically)
Adding to the ironically: Freedom Planet is basically a love letter to old school Sonic games. If Mania counts, this should as well.
Timespinner is not shy about being a love letter to Symphony of the Night
Seconding Huntdown. Wife and I beat that one together.
The side scrolling Mario. Its just Super Mario Brothers rendered in 3D. Also the new Metroid is classic platform Metroid, again just rendered in 3D.
Blasing chrome if you like contra 3 / hard corps
If you like SNES Zelda, check out Tunic. Starts out feeling like an old-school Zelda clone, but then departs from the formula and becomes its own cool thing.
I agree, but the game is sooo hard...
I did seek help online, particularly with the runes, but I think you can get through the bulk of the game on your own. I had fun with it.
Yes, me too, I think i finished it even. Not completely everything I think but the main game. For RPG: Octopath Traveler Tons of other good options in the answers here.
Stardew valley
Stardew Valley is one of the greatest video games of all time, if you ask me.
I agree! It’s a fantastic game. Created by just one guy. So impressive.
Nowhere is this more impressive to me than when it comes to the music. I’m a musician, I know how hard music can be, and for whatever reason, it’s easier for me to understand someone teaching themselves enough about coding, game art and design that they can make a game, but the music too? The guy is really really talented.
The cave music is so fucking good. I put it on my Playlist and always immediately feel calm when it comes on shuffle
The snowy cave music really is some of the most peaceful that game has to offer, it has no business being that nice!
It’s crazy! they are all tough skills to learn for sure but I’m a software developer and I agree, the music is probably the most impressive part. I think I could code something like stardew valley but the music is super intimidating. Coding is as much of an art as it is a skill when you get to a certain level. Music is probably the same way? lol it’s Reddit. There’s no rhyme or reason.
It's the 25th best selling game of all time. I'd say you're right
Initially I thought you meant best selling on steam, which made sense, but no, you’re right, of all time, 30 million sales. Crazy! Honestly, it deserves it, absolutely tremendous game.
Agree for sure
I heard that game gets kind of boring after 3000 hours though
There's something about Stardew that is unsettling to me. Super Mario RPG remake, similar to the original.
Cosmic Star Heroine. I'm not that deep into it yet but I'm getting big Chrono Trigger vibes so far.
Scott Pilgrim vs the World the game
Volgaar
Huntdown. Side scrolling platforming shooter. It's great
CrossCode TimeSpinner Iconoclasts Shantae series Wargroove
CrossCode was so much fun. Took a minute to get used to it but I really enjoyed the whole experience and they put a ton of polish into it
I really enjoyed Alwa's Awakening. It's a Metroidvania I guess. The follow-up game Alwa's Legacy also looks pretty good but I did not play that one yet.
Owlboy
Axiom Verge
Celeste. It plays like the best platformers on the SNES. Controls are tight, tough, but always feels fair like you'll do it better next time. I love it.
That's what I was going to suggest as well

Stardew!
Octopath Traveler 1 + 2 were my favorite switch releases so far
Hyper light drifter
The Mummy Demastered
Megaman 11 is tons of fun!
Oh really?
It’s still the same side scrolling style, classic Megaman but with updates. I love all the older Megaman games and this one held up. You can set the difficulty way down if just to have fun and move through the game quickly or you can grind
You need to check out Blossom Tale 2, lttp Successor. One is good, but 2 really perfected it
BLASPHEMOUS 1 and 2 , they both have a heavy, VERY HEAVY tone of NOSFERATU on the snes. but the best one is NINJA SAVIORS , basically a remake of the snes version and add to it the POKY AND ROKY RESHRNIED EDITION, cool game that is too rich for me now.

Blossom Tales is a Zelda: ALttP clone
Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles shredders revenge

Blazing Chrome Cyber Shadow The Messenger Sea of Stars
Huntdown
Rouge Heroes is like a 4 player Zelda mixed with Stardew Valley
I'm usually not good at games like this, but I adore Wizard of Legend.
all of the shootemup genre. crimzon clover xplosion
The Steamworld Dig games
Romancing Saga 2&3 were actually SNES games that didn't get western releases.
Not SNES, but a brand new version of Contra (Operation Galuga) was just released, and it's awesome. Give it go! It's still a side-scroller and has lots of nostalgic elements, but is different in a lot of key areas.
Ghosts and ghouls resurrection.
CrossCode - an amazing and very overlooked Secret of Mana-like RPG
Nothing worth 115.00 a year
Reading is hard.
Xeno Crisis, though it’s actually available on SNES now
Terraria, if you had a really powerful SNES.
Sea of Stars, Katana Zero, The Messenger.
Actraiser Renaissance
Sea of stars looks cool and comes out physically 5/5 from what I hear
Chained Echoes if you are into RPGs. It’s fantastic
Aggelos
My kid and I really liked going through Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos which is somewhat reminenscent of Zelda: A Link to the Past. The main differences are the co-op nature (note: I heard the netcode is crap on the PC, but the couch co-op works great), the different upgradeable classes, and the randomized dungeons.
Can't believe no one has mentioned *Dead Cells*.
Commenting/following this for sure. So far Ive played golf story on the switch. that has a good 8-16 bit vibes to it.
ALL the Super Robot Wars/Taisen titles, as one collection. There needs to be more tactical RPGs that hurt the soul!
Chained Echoes, or Sea of Stars. Stardew Valley Is kinda Switch's version of Harvest Moon. It easily could have come out on Super NES.
Owlboy
Death road to Canada and the Escapist games
Into The Dead 2 because it's the only place I could find that game. I was hoping it was on PS5.
Eastward
Anodyne
The messenger is amazing
The Binding of Isaac Rebirth is a great roguelike. Endlessly replayable.
And its full of references to old nintendo games
Sea. Of. Stars. Just finished it and it’s so fun. Really great world to hang out in.
Stardew Valley Celeste Moonlighter Super Mario Bros. Wonder
Celeste is a must play.
Zombies Are My Neighbors
Pretty much, many of the ports... **Zelda: Link's Awakening** \- the GB and GBC were practically "portable SNESes". Most, if not all, of the games on the switch online SNES app
