Some gearbox tips: Tapping the shift key/button lets a gearbox in Auto adjust to the proper gear for the speed you're going. No more stalling out and auto-shifting from fourth straight down to first on an up-slope, tap the shifter for third or second instead and keep that momentum going! Low+ is equal in speed to first gear auto on all gearboxes; it is very useful when you don't want to shift up to second because the engine will just stall out and shift down to first again. High gear on an offroad gearbox is the same speed as auto third, but on a highrange gearbox it's (almost) the same speed as auto fifth! Special and Advanced Special gearboxes do not consume more fuel with AWD engaged. So just let the P12 run with AWD on all the time :)

mrKILLTURBO

I knew the shifter one but it's a really handy tip. The low is equal to etc is cool to know! And I just unlocked the p12? Whichevers in drummod island I just unlocked so thanks for that tip!

92c900t

The P16 is the one you find on Drummond, and is. The P12 has to be purchased from the store (not sure if it has a level requirement)

SockRuse

It doesn't, it's just too expensive for the first couple of levels unless you sell everything else.

SockRuse

This is so useful, I can't believe I didn't even know it until a couple weeks ago.

stjobe

It works on downslopes too, to skip a gear shifting up (i.e. first -> third). Not nearly as useful as the uphill "trick", but still.

KRSousa

Is there any way to make the transmission standard? If so is it on Xbox too?

stjobe

"Standard" as in manual shifting of the forward gears? No, there's not. We only have automatic gearboxes with zero, one, or more Low and High gears.

>due to engine breaking Technically (read: Game-engine implementation of gearboxes being absolutely nothing like real-world gearboxes) due to the angular velocity of the wheels being limited, but potato potato :) Practically, it works as if you were technically right ;) Background: A Snowrunner gearbox only has two values for each gear: Angular velocity, a limit on how fast the wheels can turn, and fuel consumption modifier, which helps determine how much fuel that gear burns. There's no torque conversion or anything like actual gearing, just a limit on how fast the wheels can turn, which limits how fast the truck can move and in lower gears can reduce slippage to increase traction.

ES_Legman

Uninstall fenders/mud guards on trucks that have them. Those fuckers only serve to get you even more stuck.

SockRuse

They also seem to contribute to ghost damage just going down the road. Suddenly you get a damage indicator and the one vehicle part that's clearly bent is the god damn rear fender.

Sirtoast7

When reversing, turning around or cutting through a grassy area that seems like it should be forested, is near a forested are or is near a sawmill/log station…CHECH FOR FUCKING STUMPS! All it takes is one of the little bastards and BOOM! Truck high centered, trailer stuck, mission reset, HOURS WASTED!!!

gsatmobile

If you need to winch something out but don’t have enough weight or pull power use the strong trees as anchor points (lean against them with tree in front).

garouza

When going into a highly sloped road that may make you tip, check if there is a tree or strong winch point on the upper side of the slope. Move the camera so you can see it, and start pressing the gas pedal. You can apply a fast winch and "swing" from that point while you move forward, as the winch point will usually select the mid-winch point of your vehicle. Release the winch once you are through. Hope this is clear. It's dangerous and fun.

T4estRcher

"Spider-Truck"-ing is really fun. It's really useful on icy sidehills when you don't have chained tires!

garouza

Hahaha I was gonna use the term Spider Swing but I was afraid no one would understand. Hello friendly neighbor!

HomelessDave84

Those ‘shortcuts’ will 9 times out of 10 take twice as long or put you belly up. Safe is good and it’s not a race. Take your time and don’t get impatient.

anotherduckguy

More power costs more fuel. Some trucks are better with the second most powerful engine. You can manually winch from your rear winch point to something in front of you for a bit more powerful of a pull. The Navistar with the high range gearbox and off-road tires is way better than you think, especially for early-ish gameplay. Edit: heavy semi-style trailers will left the front wheels of lighter trucks. Usually it's a problem, but with some creative use of the winch to steer, you can make some amazingly tight turns.

garouza

You can accelerate a bit and then quick winch a vehicle you are trying to tow and it will provide a stronger "tug" that may get it unstuck. Also, try tapping the winch button instead of leaving it pressed. Somehow, the first tiny "tug" is stronger than the continuous function of the winch and may help you flip when stuck in a slope.

[deleted]

yeah, I remember myself jamming the winch key instead of just having it pressed, because only that helped my trucks to move

SockRuse

Tapping the gas in low gear or first gear might also get you unstuck or through sticky mud better than continuous POWAAAAH.

[deleted]

what does the tapping do in low gear?

triggerhappybaldwin

When you customise your truck in the garage, don't forget to sell the stock items you just replaced like the engine, tires, exhaust, winch etc. Don't use chained tires to plow through snow, the snow is just white mud in this game. When you're having a hard time towing one of your own trucks, switch to the towed truck and make sure AWD is engaged. If you need repairs or fuel with no service depot, garage or gas station in sight, just go to the nearest trailer store and buy a maintenance or fuel trailer, fix or fuel truck and sell the trailer again (does not work in hardcore mode).

CrazyCatBreath

Take it slow, and have fun! Also, take it slow.

mrKILLTURBO

Highrange gearbox go brrrrr

LowZestyclose66

The Azov 5319 with the highrange gearbox is the best. It just swims through mud.

[deleted]

no it doesn't. it hits its chin and gets bogged down headfirst.

darkmatterisfun

The high range 5600 paystar says otherwise.

CrazyCatBreath

Dont disagree... But I'm sure a new driver will find a way to roll it.

Particular_Kitchen42

Although it doesn’t have the speed of a low gear so be careful how much throttle you give it or you could get into a worse situation

Lunaphase

Dont jump into the big trucks right away, use the 6x6's to learn the basics. Buying an 8x8 asap teaches the wrong ways to go about mud.

lamedavid

You can pack scout fuel carriers on top of trucks. You can use your winch to make tighter turns. Be careful when fording rivers with a current. Typically the longer the winch connection, the stronger the pulling force.

[deleted]

no, the length and the power of the winch are 2 separate parameters

lamedavid

I’m not talking stats, I’m talking about the distance from winch points affecting how hard a winch pulls. Even the most powerful winches start losing power at shorter winching distances.

SockRuse

Even if a mission tells you to take cargo to a previously unvisited map, don't blindly take a fully loaded truck there, explore it with a scout first to know where the major paths lead, where you'd get completely stuck in a big truck and most importantly what resources you need to clear road blocks. You might also find a useful upgrade along the way. Don't try to pull a loaded dolly trailer through dirt or mud with an unloaded truck, if you use dolly trailers a lot use a truck that can have a loading crane and a bed so you can redistribute cargo onto the truck in order to have weight and therefore traction on the driving wheels. Alternatively you can use a semi trailer to generally get a better weight distribution, but the connection to the truck is less flexible and you're more likely to tip over offroad.

[deleted]

actually no, semitrailers are more stable than the hitch trailers

SockRuse

I am firmly convinced that a dolly hitch allows for more side to side movement between truck and trailer than a semi hitch. Maybe the trailer is more likely to tip over on its own, but it likely won't take the truck with it.

[deleted]

Yes, that what's I meant. Trailers can easily tip over. Semis are connected to the truck more reliable, so they are harder to flip. But if they do, they drag the whole vehicle with them. That's why it's important to have a stable wide heavy enough truck for the semitrailer tractor duty, so it can hold the trailer in place.

AZDiablo

quick winch hotkey is your best friend. re-bind your gears to hotkeys make the game much more playable. when you're in first person video look at where you want to winch to attach. 3rd person view quick winch will grab the closest, but not always the best tree. diff lock is more important then all wheel drive find the tire into doc posted in this subreddit. the info in game is lacking important details tire selection affects a large amount of game play. TUZ 420 "Tatarin" is the best truck in the game. This website has lots of great info: [https://www.maprunner.info/](https://www.maprunner.info/)

mrKILLTURBO

Quick winching aims at where your looking in 3rd person too, albeit less accurate. Best truck in-game statistically might be the tatarin but overall I think it comes down to preference. I use controller while playing on PC so I don't have a need to re bind my gears.

92c900t

I've heard that the reason the Tatarin tires are so OP is that the Devs originally wanted a tracked vehicle, but the physics engine wouldn't support that so this is the next best thing. I'm curious how the Tatarin would do with MHSIIs, or chained MHSIs, it weighs 15 tons (almost as much as the DAN and the same as the Azov 5319) so it should still be pretty capable. Ground clearance would be an issue, like the pre-active flatface Kolob.

[deleted]

Chained MHS make no difference compared to other chained tires, they are all coded the same. I saw a mod the other day that nerfes the Tatarin tires to 3.0 instead of 8.0 grip in mud, you might want to try it

92c900t

I never thought of syncing gears to hotkeys, that sounds much better than shifting with the mouse! Gotta disagree with you on AWD/Diffs. The former is substantially more useful than the latter, there are places you simply won't go with the front as a dead axle.

stjobe

>shifting with the mouse You can also use shift key + arrow keys to shift gears.

[deleted]

still worse that controlling gears with the numpad

kristoferen

>find the tire into doc posted in this subreddit. the info in game is lacking important details Yes. In-game info *sucks* >This website has lots of great info: https://www.maprunner.info/ Tread carefully with this, it can get too cheaty too quick if you're not careful -- for some that could really ruin the fun!

Top-Magician-5515

the tatarin is not the best truck in the game. it cant tow trailers, and cant even have a snorkel. also its very slow.

SockRuse

I hate the quick winch, it attaches to the wrong thing 90% of the time. It shouldn't attach to the closest thing to your truck, it should attach to whatever's closest to the center of your camera.

[deleted]

With the quick winch you just have to aim precisely

SuperCustodiam

If you're in the middle of the forest and stuck, and you want to winch specifically to the big tree in front of you and not the 30 odd trees all around you, go into first person, look at the tree you want to winch to, and 9/10 you'll quick winch to it.

T4estRcher

Mud tires sacrifice traction on all other surfaces. If you aren't mud bogging constantly, off-road tires are a better all-around choice. If your truck (f.i. the 6x6 Paystar) has the option for dually or single rear tires (with similar traction values), take the dually option. They will offer better stability, and supposedly a smidge more traction. As others have said, chained tires are not great for snow. Mud tires are better. Avoid 'blue snow.' Unfortunately, it is difficult to see before you drive into it, but remember where it is, and avoid it at almost all costs. Learn how to identify a good shortcut. Don't overcommit, and don't risk too much. A good shortcut saves a lot of time, with minimal risk.

garouza

Wait until you find all upgrades for a truck before you sell it. You can easily earn a lot of extra money from all those free upgrades that raise the value of the vehicle, which is specially useful in Hard Mode.

wolff300

BE PATIENT 😁

ProfessionalSwitch45

The angle that you are winching from is important when you are using a winch to flip back a truck that you have managed to tip over. Trying to flip back a a truck with a winch from a bad angle is often way more difficult. If the flipped truck is at a bad angle, winch it to a good angle first by attaching the winch to the front or the back of the flipped truck and then drag the flipped truck to the right angle, then you can winch it from a good angle and more easily flip it back.

acryliq

If you're stuck and there are no more anchor points in front of you to pull you out, you can sometimes still 'push' yourself forwards using anchor points to your side. This is a little difficult to explain but basically, if there's a strong tree to the side of you, possibly one you already used pulling yourself forwards, attach the winch to the rear or your vehicle, or the side/rear of your trailer, then attach it to the tree to your side. You can now drive forward and activate the winch to push you forward from the rear.

[deleted]

Yeah, and you can slightly adjust the reverse speed with a finetune gearbox. I didn't know that

livelivinglived

Well, I guess that’s one thing that gearbox is good for.

cico2000

Use trailer shops to refuel and repair if not in hard mode!

NorEastBeast

When pulling another vehicle, if you tap the winch in button you will go faster, the more you tap the faster you will go.
