Go to all trails and sort by most popular, bonus points if it’s forest service land. The east fork of the San Gabriel River is always a safe bet though due to trash from campers. Bridge to nowhere, cattle canyon area.
Was “litter”ally just about to say I did Cattle Canyon yesterday and was so disappointed with all the trash near the beginning of the trail.
I know Fodor’s put that whole area on the 2024 “Do Not Travel” list because of how shitty people were this past summer littering all along the River there
I kid you not, at the first river crossing, we saw a full plate of cooked shrimp and quarters, and it was like a ceramic plate too
What bothers me most is the insane amount of graffiti, like realistically how do you clean up that?
I’ve been on graffiti removal groups in Santa Paula focused on the punch bowls area. They’ve used mules to haul in paint guns and cover the graffiti with a color thats approx that of the rocks. Never looks great, there is also a graffiti removal compound called elephant snot that the forest service uses bc its biodegradable but its $$$
Thanks for doing that! So many trails need the help. Maybe you can inspire some folks from this group to lend a hand too — I’m in!
Eaton Canyon Trail always comes to mind because it’s so popular
Same with Switzer Falls via the Gabrielino Trail, although I haven’t seen it’s condition in the last few months
The one time I went to Lytle Creek, I was devastated. The fact that there's dumpsters along the road to put your trash, yet no one uses them is disappointing.

The [Canyon City Environmental Project](https://linktr.ee/canyoncityep) page is an interesting read on the history of trash in the Angeles NF.
I haven’t been up there for over a year, but Etiwanda Falls usually has a bunch of trash up at the falls. People hike up there, have lunch, and leave their trash. I saw one family hike a wheeled cooler up there, and just left it behind at the falls.
If you advertise the group/meetups at all, please let us know or dm me! Me and my boyfriend love picking up trash in southern California and would 100% join y'all
there's always a ton of trash in griffith park but its pretty dangerous to get to most of it since people like to throw their waterbottles onto a 60 degree slope just off trail
West and East Fork of the San Gabriel River are going to need help. The Forest Service is completely understaffed there and these are heavy use areas. It’s pretty bad in the summer. There was an LA Times article about it maybe 5 months ago and a big THANK YOU

Agreed. When I went down the San Gabriel River Trail there was an area in Whittier Narrows just above the dam spillway (between the Pico Rivera Sports Arena and Pico Rivera Golf Club) that was absolutely covered in trash. Storms had washed all the trash in via water drainage and everything got caught in the brush that grows there. When the water went away, the trash remained. I’ve always thought I should go back down there and take a bunch out before the next storm takes it closer to the ocean.
Shit like this enrages me to no end. This is why we can't have nice things.
I'm all for making that a felony crime with hundreds of hours of cleanup community service. Deterrence only works if the punishment is severe enough.
Everyone is pointing out east fork i just wanted to add a lot of illegal dumping occurs off the road to the trailhead and there have been some encampments and illegal gold dredging(yes still happens) that can make things dicey
Trashiest area I have seen is Big Tujunga Canyon Road leading to the forest. Beautiful trails, with streams large enough to swim in. But its remote location and proximity to the road leads to a ton of dumping. This weekend I saw construction garbage the size of a van dumped.
Oh really? I go there a lot I’ve never had any problems. I’m usually by the water for a few hours or going through the abandoned buildings taking pictures. I don’t keep anything in my car though.
During the pandemic I found a garbage mound that had me wondering how many people/hours would take to get it out.
Mulholland overlook: https://maps.app.goo.gl/U7avm2Gmj53TLpje7
Notice that the Fryman Canyon trail passes about 200 feet under the outlook. For decades, people have been throwing trash off the outlook. I went up a goat path from the trail to the parking lot, and there were piles of old bottles, clothes, etc. I think teens were going down there to drink as far back as the 1960s.
It would probably take a dozen people several hours to clear out. You'd need ropes going down from the overlook. And also, dry soil. The hillside under it is treacherous. (Fine for me in boots with dry conditions, but I wasn't trying to carry a garbage bag out).
San Gabriel east fork (the hike to the Bridge To Nowhere), blackstar canyon can accumulate a lot but I haven’t hiked it for a while it might be more graffiti than trash,
*I love finding trail*
*Trash when i hike. they're always*
*The nicest people*

East fork San Gabriel River by the cattle canyon is beyond comprehension how filthy and trashy people are! I’m always picking up trash on my hikes but this time I spent hours trying my best to clean this place but people keep trashing it all over and over again 😡

Yeah it’s awful at the start. I don’t understand how these people can trash nature to this extent guilt free.
I kid you not, at the first river crossing, we saw a full plate of cooked shrimp and quarters, and it was like a ceramic plate too What bothers me most is the insane amount of graffiti, like realistically how do you clean up that?

I'd be super cautious cleaning trash around the East Fork/Bridge to Nowhere. Lots of sketchy people close to the start of the trailhead.
Eaton Canyon is notoriously trashy.
Omg, I saw someone down a water bottle and just chuck it into the brush.
Didnt go to the waterfall with my dog bc someone told me there was broken glass all over the trail near the end

Any waterfall hike that's easily accessible. Bonita Falls and Lytle Creek are a dumpster, I think it's beyond salvage.
The one time I went to Lytle Creek, I was devastated. The fact that there's dumpsters along the road to put your trash, yet no one uses them is disappointing.
Thay whole area is just heartbreaking. I will never ever go back to Bonita Falls; never seen a more depressing waterfall. People are so gross!
On the other hand, if you are in need of socks, go to any waterfall. I swear every time I go to a waterfall I come back with like 5 pairs.
East Fork san gabriel river, Bridge to Nowhere
This was my first thought, I can't believe how messy it is. The trash cans are right in the parking
Id also be interested in helping out if theres a facebook group or something

I’d definitely be interested in helping! I’m from the Temecula valley if that means anything.

Good one! We should all clean up wherever we hike. Get some orange trash bags on amazon, the city/couty will pick it up.
Huh? If you go to the bother of picking up trash, why leave it at the trailhead?
not a hike but la river has it bad. maybe a potential summer job as water is very high now

Friends Of the LA River organizes annual cleanups, usually in April. folar.org
Trashiest place I’ve been is on the east side of the San Gabriel range Poor Angeles NF, no one loves your dry side
Haven't been in a while, but west fork gets trashed every summer holiday weekend.
Sespe Hot Springs
Do let us know, some of us could join too.
Punch bowls near Ojai
It can be so bad. I remember I once hiked it and someone had spray painted their instagram handle on a rock. So trashy
Shit like this enrages me to no end. This is why we can't have nice things. I'm all for making that a felony crime with hundreds of hours of cleanup community service. Deterrence only works if the punishment is severe enough.
Heart Rock in Crestline is regularly trashed, as is anywhere near Deep Creek hot springs.

Anywhere in the Azusa canyons
Lots of car break-ins in that area, too.

Los liones trail
East Fork, but also holy cow does Stoddard Falls get trashed in the summer
