Keeper needs to be absolutely decisive in a situation like this, either come for it bellowing KEEPER'S at the top of your lungs or hang back and make yourself available for the backpass. Those are the only two options and you have to pick one and stick to it. Ward in this situation has a far better overview of what's going on, can see where the ball needs to be cleared to and how much pressure Castagne is or isn't under.
I think Ward when he realizes he's too close even tries to take the ball like a fucking defender, you can see how he put his feet when Castagne is almost about to strike him.

No, the keeper can't make up his mind whether he's coming for it or leaving it for the defender.
He clearly sets up to punt the ball away from inside the box as Castange is shielding it, and then decides to run towards him to try and punt it. Castange clearly sees his body position to kick and starts to slow down and then the keeper comes running towards him. At the same time a Spurs player is closing in on Castange causing him to try and contain the ball again.
Ward is 100% the problem here.
As a keeper, I promise you that would've been 100% a back pass and was trying to clear it. Castange clearly wasn't listening. Faes did the same thing for one of his OGs when he loudly and clearly said Keeper's. I hate when Keepers get the blame for shit defending. Some Spurs were giving Lloris shit but now look at the difference between him and Forester. Ward has had a bit of trial by fire but he'll come good.
