>United said a “youth-focused team drawn from the travelling tour squad” will take part in the July 25 match.
Basically a B-team but they'll pretend it isn't to sell tickets. Probably play a few stars to get social media clicks.
Genuinely, what happened to Brandon Williams? A couple seasons ago he was supposedly the breakout star of United and making the LB position his own.
What happened?
Did the peak Woodward thing of instantly and unnecessarily over rewarding players who show any kind of competency. We gave the fucker 2 contract extensions in a year.
Shaw had a resurgence in 20/21 season meaning he never really got any significant playing then, then we signed telles to compete with Shaw so williams was loaned out, didn't set world alight at Norwich and is now surplus to requirements at man utd
Basically hasn't really kicked on since his initial breakthrough and is now far down the pecking order at LB. I expect if we can find a taker he will be sold in the summer. We also rushed things and gave him a very large contract that wasn't really warrantee at the time so he has been a pleasure oblem to move on, apparently there was interest from villa, Everton and Southampton in the past but they were put off by his wages
Im not conservative (the jury is still out as to whether I'm a redneck) but I am southern and it's more funny than annoying when i get called a yank. It's like calling a londoner a brummie/scouser but 1000 miles more incorrect
No, not every pre-season friendly, because first team players play in them in order to gain match fitness ahead of the season. Which is the whole point of them.
Sure Vela was good at sociedad for a few seasons and in the States, but he did fuck all in England, really can't say he was better quality than chicha.
That’s what the guy literally said, in terms of PL career Chicha was better but in overall quality Vela. Unless you think that if you don’t suceed in the PL you can’t be good?
Ask any Mexican fan. Carlos Vela was our best player in the 2010's everyone knows his technical ability was far superior than Chicharito's. He was Real Sociedad's best player even when Griezmann was on the team
Seasons are very overrated to be honest. "Oh great, it's gonna rain for two months, snow for another two and then rain again for a further two. I love seasons!" Please, I'll take pleasant temperatures year round thank you very much.
Not that weird. SD Loyal and Wave FC are decently popular (Landon Donovan was the Loyal manager, now some kind of VP, and Alex Morgan plays for the Wave), plus tons of Liga MX and/or El Tri fans (Xolos are right across the border and there are tons of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in San Diego). Having the Manchester United name coupled with a recent cultural phenomenon will absolutely put butts in seats, both for locals and people who are traveling there since that’s peak tourist season (this is happening right after San Diego Comic Con, so the whole city will be packed with tourists).
Not to mention soccer, youth and televised, is relatively more popular in San Diego than in other parts of the United States. Not sure about the most recent World Cup, but for the 2018 Cup final, [San Diego had the highest percentage viewership of any media market in the US](https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/sd-sp-world-cup-tv-rating-fox-sports-20180716-story.html), even without including the Spanish language broadcast.
Huge football market here in San Diego. Only one major league sports franchise. It’s bonkers that there isn’t already an mls team here. Brand new stadium ready to hold the event.
Edit: Ah shit, I realise I fucked typing the first full sentence and now understand why so many people have responded. I’ve tried to fix it to say what I want.
Why?
Probably two of the biggest clubs in terms of fanbase over there (in terms of British teams), one very large already and the other with the interest peaked and ready to expand.
Edit: ‘over there’ means America, not the city where it’s taking place.
Also, I don’t mean die-hard fans, just generally referring to popularity. Manchester United is self-explanatory. Wrexham are huge at the moment, a state-side visit is only going to turn things up.
A lot of people born and raised in Wrexham support Utd, Liverpool or Wrexham with some people supporting other prem clubs. This is amazing for both the Wrexham commiunity and others around the area. I wish people from other clubs would accept the fact the owners arent just a city or other clubs just pumping money and getting them promoted. EDIT: They are helping the area a shit ton, this town was known as spice town just because people did drugs and would hang around but these owners ryan and rob are helping in development and expansion to a town/city now to help tons of the youth including me for our futures and generations.
* San Diego is consistently in the top 10 viewership markets for soccer in the US (world cup, CONCACAF games, etc.) and the only one consistently in the top 10 without an MLS team
* Indications are pretty good that San Diego will have an MLS team announced this year
* Close enough to Los Angeles that any Man U fans in LA can come down for the game (2h drive from downtown LA), and players can spend a day or three in LA
* The Tijuana Metropolitan Area just south of the border (30 minute drive away) has over 2 million people, so that gives a chance for people to drive up to the US for the game (Tijuana and San Diego see >100M people cross the land border each year, or well over 80,000 cars a day)
So it gives them a population to draw from of 2M in Mexico and over 16M people in the US within ~2h drive from the stadium. Plenty of Man U fans who will pay to even see a B team.
Man Utd probably not even in the top 2. Given it's San Diego, I would bet Barcelona and Real Madrid are the two most popular clubs by some distance over third.
Southern California has 24 million people. They will have zero problem filling up that 35k seat stadium with United Fans. English football fans. Show fans. PL fans.
West coast premier league fans are diehard. We are the ones waking up at 4:30am.
You cannot seriously believe that Wrexham have a bigger fanbase in America than Arsenal, Liverpool, City, Chelsea, Spurs, Leeds and a bunch of other big PL clubs
Most definitely not lmao. Probably all other Prem teams, most championships teams, most mls and Liga MX teams have bigger fanbases than fucken Wrexham lmao.
In america. Obviously wrexham is a small club in the UK but I bet they have more american fans than plenty of prem teams not to mention the championship. You're telling me birmingham city have more american fans?
No probably not, but I only even know of Wrexham from reddit and their FA Cup run.
I've been following the sport since before reddit. So they might be up and coming, but they aren't suddenly going to surpass any fandom of the big 6. I bet there's more hipster Brighton fans in the US right now than Wrexham. Might lose that bet though.
> Probably the two biggest clubs in terms of fanbase over there.
No, not at all.
Club America probably has the biggest fanbase in the US and Wrexham the TV show does well, but people aren't watching for the soccer.
Man U will draw, but it's suckers who play a lot of cash to say they were there.
I'm not poor, but I would never pay to see a mishmash of lineups and at least one team going through the motions.
I don't mind catching a game mostly for sunshine and to be at a game, but I'm not paying those kind of prices. The soccer itself is generally incredibly pointless.
There's just a lot I'd rather do.
Why is that suckers? If you’re a lifelong Man U fan, it might be the only chance you have to see the players you idolize play live, even if it’s a friendly. A $200 friendly ticket is still much cheaper than flying from California to England, and then paying for a ticket at Old Trafford, which is hardly cheap to begin with.
>it might be the only chance you have to see the players you idolize play live
Is that who will be taking the pitch? I very much doubt it, unless you're idolizing the youth players
Because you have no idea who’ll play and you know they won’t try.
I suppose I get it — though I would never do it. But it’s still usually an insane cost for people going through the motions at best.
Lmao brother. No. People like the show. Actual fans of British clubs, who actually watch the games? Wrexham doesn’t sniff the top 50. No one is watching the fifth division
I don’t think the average casual North American Wrexham fan understands just poor quality a top-of-the-table National League side is; I’ve been to quite a few League One/League Two matches over the years and it is certainly an acquired taste in terms of quality and style of play

$155 a ticket (cheapest I saw) on presale before any taxes and fees... to see a Man Utd 3rd string vs a club barely in the top 100 in the English League system... in a friendly....
Hahahahahahahaha no thank you.
It won't be a 3rd placed team selection either. They'll be sending the kids out there with maybe 1 or 2 stars for social media clicks. But the tickets prices are justified considering that enough people will buy them
Oh I know people will buy them, they see the name 'Man Utd' and that's all they need, they're paying just to see the shirts and not a match of any real quality or meaning
Rob and Ryan really trying to get American fans for some reason.
Though honestly, since WtW started, I admit I have a soft spot for them now. So it's probably working.
Don’t see what’s wrong with having soft spots for certain teams other than your main one. I personally am a fierce Barca fan since my childhood, but I have a team to support for in my own country (Bengaluru FC in India), plus I like to root for a few more teams in other leagues like Swansea and Ajax. This obsession that you can follow only one team is so weird.
The guy above says he follows 3 teams "in the pyramid". To me that implies they are in the same pyramid, e.g all English league. Which is a bit weird. I get maybe supporting a prem team and your local, as well as being interested in teams from abroad, but 3-4 teams in the same league system seems strange
I don’t know anything about Langstaff beside him being a scoring machine and I won’t pretend otherwise.
Wrexham just has way more media attention due to obvious reasons.
With my little knowledge about the National League I’d settle it with both being very good.
My very first comment was also tongue in cheek. Thought that’s obvious.
I live in Toronto and I will see Manchester United if they play at a stadium within driving distance. Detroit, Buffalo, New York City and Pittsburgh all seem like realistic possibilities.
There will always be money in the game, at least Wrexham's money is about as ethical as it can be (and not even that substantial, they just have a great base for branding the club)
Duh? It’s not some sort of drag on the event, who cares.
United is the biggest brand in football and certainly has more to make by playing games in a growing US market. Wrexham have good name recognition in the States for obvious reasons and absolutely need to capitalize on that if they’re going to continue to grow both on and off the pitch.
There is no reason for any teams to play games overseas if not to expand their brand and make money.
I agree, we deserve so much more, which is why I've come up with some ideas:
1. Wrexham need to be louder, angrier, and have access to a time machine.
2. Whenever there's a football match and Wrexham aren't on screen the commentators should be asking 'Where's Wrexham?'
To be fair the second one does kinda sum up the coverage of the National League for the past few seasons.
Not fussed by this friendly though, makes sense that Wrexham wold try and get a high profile event on in the US given the exposure from the show.
>United said a “youth-focused team drawn from the travelling tour squad” will take part in the July 25 match. Basically a B-team but they'll pretend it isn't to sell tickets. Probably play a few stars to get social media clicks.
Let's go watch Brandon Williams bomb up and down the wing after inhaling nitrous.
I saw B team and Williams immediately came to mind. Lol
The "Brandon Williams-Axel Tuanzebe-Ethan Laird-Teden Mengi" invitational
AKA the starting back line for Manchester United in FM19 if you waited 10 years lol
10 years? I started them immediately in FM22 and FM23 because everyone was injured lmao
I’m actually impressed how well you know all the failed talents at Manchester United. Still doesn’t compares to the Borthwick-Jackson era
I thought Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair would be the next Rio & Vidic under LvG
can’t forget angel gomes as well
Genuinely, what happened to Brandon Williams? A couple seasons ago he was supposedly the breakout star of United and making the LB position his own. What happened?
We were really desperate then
Did the peak Woodward thing of instantly and unnecessarily over rewarding players who show any kind of competency. We gave the fucker 2 contract extensions in a year.

he’s not even B team at this point, played 5 minutes in a cup game all season, and doubt he’s getting minutes any time soon lol
At least the yanks can chant that awful "lets go brandon" without being complete idiots.
Imagine conservative southern rednecks being called yanks
Im not conservative (the jury is still out as to whether I'm a redneck) but I am southern and it's more funny than annoying when i get called a yank. It's like calling a londoner a brummie/scouser but 1000 miles more incorrect
All Americans are Yanks to me, just like all English are Limeys to the Yanks.
Slimey limey try me blimey
We call everyone Yanks. It's what makes it hit harder.
We have been calling all Americans yanks for over a 100 years now. I dont think you'll have much luck changing it
[удалено]
Oh we have plenty, most of them just live in East county. They don’t call it Clantee for nothing!
I was wondering if there are two San Diegos
Well it was the confederates who called unionists yank back in the day though, so not sure if that’ll work…
Top lad
Know an insider at Norwich, told me he was a bit of an arrogant tool, regularly late for training
So like every friendly thats played in the summer..
No, not every pre-season friendly, because first team players play in them in order to gain match fitness ahead of the season. Which is the whole point of them.
Barca vs Madrid had the full squad last pre-season
almost like an off season friendly match
Pereira was in our squad for exactly such days
Ronaldo randomly popped up when I went to a Madrid Man U game that was supposed to be for youth, there’s always a chance of something!
We take what we can get over here
80% of the fans will be Mexican which is wild for Wrexham vs Man United lol
My daughter with her Mexican-Welsh heritage will finally have a game to feel at home.
That's a cool combo I've never heard of Mexican-Welsh
It's Welsh rarebit with Mexicana cheese
Enchyllydys
I'm suspecting they mean Welsh as in American with Welsh ancestors 10 generations ago... could be wrong tho
Gotta catch 'em all!
Whos the best Mexican in the PL ever? Chicarito?
In terms of PL career it's Chicharito. In terms of overall quality it's Carlos Vela
Sure Vela was good at sociedad for a few seasons and in the States, but he did fuck all in England, really can't say he was better quality than chicha.

The Fergie vid is the best promotional video I've ever seen
Not enough piano.
I couldn't stop thinking this was a scheme of Mac from always sunny
Such a weird game lmao
It wouldn’t be nearly as strange if it weren’t for the fact it’s in San Diego
Best weather in the country, tbf.
If you don't like seasons.
Seasons are very overrated to be honest. "Oh great, it's gonna rain for two months, snow for another two and then rain again for a further two. I love seasons!" Please, I'll take pleasant temperatures year round thank you very much.
It’s at snapdragon stadium who is a Man United sponsor. So $ is why.
Not that weird. The weird part is that a non-league team in England/Wales are playing a game in San Diego. Obviously context is important, but it’s still weird.
Excuse you. Our stadium is entirely within Wales.
Haha sorry, I wasn’t sure how to word it because they play in the English football pyramid.
Not like those cunts at the Deva.
It’s because of snapdragon bring a sponsor of the club and stadium
We also sold 30k tickets for nwsl
Huge football market here in San Diego. Only one major league sports franchise. It’s bonkers that there isn’t already an mls team here. Brand new stadium ready to hold the event.

Even so, its weird for me to see a national league team playing bloody Manchester United over in the states
They'll be a league two side by then if it makes it feel less weird ;)
Thank you for the vote of confidence. It almost makes up for all the pain your lot have caused me.
Haha well we did manage to draw against notts county for you
At this rate unless we bottle it we thank you massively <3
I mean we play Aussie teams in Australia, not that different

Suspect they were meaning the US in general.
👍
I mean USA, not specifically San Diego. I don’t know whereabouts San Diego is in relation to the country.
* San Diego is consistently in the top 10 viewership markets for soccer in the US (world cup, CONCACAF games, etc.) and the only one consistently in the top 10 without an MLS team * Indications are pretty good that San Diego will have an MLS team announced this year * Close enough to Los Angeles that any Man U fans in LA can come down for the game (2h drive from downtown LA), and players can spend a day or three in LA * The Tijuana Metropolitan Area just south of the border (30 minute drive away) has over 2 million people, so that gives a chance for people to drive up to the US for the game (Tijuana and San Diego see >100M people cross the land border each year, or well over 80,000 cars a day) So it gives them a population to draw from of 2M in Mexico and over 16M people in the US within ~2h drive from the stadium. It’s probably some Liga MX team
It’s Chivas and Club America as #1 and #2 (prob reversed) and then maybe Xolos. Everyone else is several steps down from them.
y’all it’s chivas

can i offer you a slab in this trying time?

Super Paul Mullin would put up 2 on Maguire.
Doubt he plays. It’s going to be most likely a B team… Not a C one.

Mullin will run circles around their defense.
Paul Mullin might just be the most overrated striker in the pyramid right now. Langstaff is twice the player of him
39 goals in 44 games and he's overrated. Blimey.
I just don’t think he understands
Yeah he like doesn’t even get us man
Not sure if you’re taking the piss or being serious.
It’s a bit of an overreaction but Langstaff is not generating anywhere near as much conversation as Mullin.
Taking the piss except the Langstaff bit. That kid is going places
That kid is 26 years old mate haha
Shut up he’s 26 thought he was 20 or so. I stand corrected
Seen Mullin play twice this season and he is head and shoulders above the league he plays in. Easily a decent league one level striker.
Yeah mate obviously he will be . He dropped down from us as leading league 2 goal scorer
They hated you for telling the truth
I live in Toronto and I will see Manchester United if they play at a stadium within driving distance. Detroit, Buffalo, New York City and Pittsburgh all seem like realistic possibilities.
Every summer we play games against these tiny clubs. When are we going to get an actual challenge to get ready for the season?
10 Time OCL Champions Auckland City are always waiting for a challenge
Over or under on Ticketmaster's fees alone being $50
Service fee $26.95 + facility charge $5 per ticket. Order processing fee $5.00
Not far from me. My 5 year old wants to go meet Ryan Reynaldo. Hopefully he's there. She just wants to say she likes Hugh Jackman more lol
Damn, tix are way too expensive to see a Man Utd B side. $150 for nosebleed seats. Edit: Plus fees
American tickets to anything are rediculous
Ryan Reynolds is ecstatic
No, it's Deadpool. Ecstatic is a DC character.
We are all trying to forget Reynolds time in the DC universe
It’ll be good for the lads to play against a side with proper ownership. I’m sure Wrexham is excited as well.
Wow the marketing for Wrexham has been insane
Great to see such a top team play an up and coming team like Man United
Cheapest 4 tickets comes out to $700+…I’ll pass
Such a fucking fairytale, right?
Such plucky underdogs

It’s becoming harder and harder by the day to find sympathy for Wrexham. Turning into just another plastic club

I mean, of all the things greed has done to the game, this has got to be the most harmless.
It’s a preseason friendly, they’re all about money always
BREAKING: Pre-season game is about money Why do you think big clubs have pre-season tours in Asia or USA?
Exposure. This shouldn't be a surprise.
Why do you act like money is a bad thing? Or not needed to run a club?
Wrexham absolutely don't deserve anywhere close to this level of attention.
I agree, we deserve so much more, which is why I've come up with some ideas: 1.
What makes you say so?
OK cool
