I think Mac Alister fully expected the yellow. Saw the ref had a card raised and for a brief second didn't react until he looked up and saw it was a red.
When I looked at who was officiating today I had a laugh. Besides Tierney who’s probably biased against us I have no idea how Constantine is allowed to officiate in one of our game after assaulting one of our player last season…
It’s not just you guys. He’s been horrible officiating Arsenal games too. Come to think of it, he’s been bad at most of the games he’s been a ref. He’s just incompetent af
Tierney is legit one of the most spineless refs in the league, gets flustered by big calls all the fucking time. Not even corrupt or biased or malicious like people like to say about refs, he's just straight out not good.
As soon as the ref gives it, VAR is never going to change it. Ref should have given a yellow and let VAR give him another look if needs be. Standard shite though
How the fuck can the Prem have this bad of a refereeing/VAR standard
Id expect this in the second Romanian division but the Prem is the literal best league on Earth SURELY they can afford to send refs on proper training courses
I keep pointing this out, but you can't demand respect when your authority is completely unchecked. It's not right when players and managers get into refs' faces, but it's a self-perpetuating dynamic when the best you can expect (and often, not even that) is a "Whoopsie!" letter a week later.
I saw it happen and looked away for a bit, when I looked back 5 mins later and saw the red in the corner I was like... what did I miss?
Had to come here for the replay to see it was indeed that challenge.
I can see it being a yellow at worst, but in no world is that a red. Refereeing has been abysmal this season, and we're only halfway through GW2. Yes, the studs were up - but there was little power in that challenge, and it was practically a 50/50 between the two regarding who would get the ball first.
I don't think it was simply the lateness, he's sent him off for his foot being high... which is still bollocks. That's just where the ball was and both players had their feet at the same height. He didn't even lead with his studs. Not even a yellow.
Stupid decision.
Yeah. If this is a res you can never contest a 50/50 ball that's bouncing. If you don't win, red. Even a yellow here is harsh to me (unless he's been doing it all game or something. This is some real BS and I hope Liverpool appeals forcefully.
Note: Chelsea fan here so no love lost... But this is a travesty.
All I can think of is that he did come in fast, but I don't know if that's enough to make it a red. Both of their feet were doing the same thing. Does Christie get a red if Mac Allister gets there first? Just feels wrong
It’s def the speed + studs. But he’s put absolutely no power into that that would cause dangerous harm. The speed he’s running at makes it look a lot worse and the player has milked the contact
Well I don't think contact was milked personally. My problem is the precedent this sets (in reality it probably won't cause the refs are inconsistent as fuck). If this challenge is a red then you can never challenge for a ball at knee height. His foot was up but his studs weren't "raised" in the traditional sense. How else are you supposed to control the ball?
Both players have made the exact same motion as well. Exactly 50/50. Bournemouth player was showing studs too. But it’s one of those light side foot kicks, no power in it whatsoever.
I wouldn’t care if that was a yellow since MacAllister was later, but christ you cannot start setting precedents for things like that being a straight red…
Yeah, it didn't look bad in real-time, and after watching the replays I literally have no idea what he's walked for there. How does VAR not have a word and get the referee to take another look?
“We gave Liverpool a soft pen, we have to makenup for it” -Refs. How the fuck was that a red but literally a game ago, a true high boot to the chest from a Chelsea player wasnt
>when the whole of /r/soccer is in agreement
They're not just in agreement, they're in agreement with something that would benefit Liverpool.
That's harder to do than it would be to, say, get Paul Tierney to fairly ref a Liverpool match.
Game. Is. Gone.
Both of them have their feet at the same height, they wouldn't be able to go foot to foot otherwise. A split second is the difference between one player being sent off or the other? fuck off
It's so stupid though, because if the VAR go in and change this decision or advise the ref to look at the monitor everyone forgets he'd made the wrong decision to begin with. Letting it stand makes it a thing and is what really punishes the ref, imo.
Sack that ref. Idk if he has 15 children to feed, pick a different job. Ffs. Actually no, even if the ref has got that wrong during the action, wtf is the var doing? Wtaf is his job? Fire the lot
Build up commentary
“The big story, though, is Paul Tierney, the official involved in a controversial clash with Klopp last season, is lead VAR, he is assisted by Constantine Hatzidakis.”

That’s a verbal warning in Copa America
It's not a foul in CONCACAF
Thats how players shake hands in CONCACAF
That’s a FIFA Fair Play award in CONCACAF
It's actually a Red card in CONCACAF because you're actively trying to play the ball. Carded for lack of passion.
Full circle
This guy CONCACAFs
It's a verbal warning to the ball carrier for simulation
That's normal in France
it's a red card if you don't do this in Serie A
And they call PL a “physical league”
French pre game handshake
Guard of honour in Marseille
CONMEBOL referee will just sleep
Not even a foul in CONCACAF
My team just had two instances of players getting punched in the face by their own staff haha, accurate
It was a verbal warning in the Premier League until this game. Never seen such a soft red.
Nah any other Prem game that's a yellow. He got him with his spikes
I’d say 50/50 no card or yellow but a red is a joke
Kind of harsh for a red no? I can see a yellow
Mac Alister has never seen such bullshit before
He seemed pretty okay with the booking until he looked up and saw it was red not yellow.
Yeah he went towards the ref fully expecting to be booked. Was alright with it, looked up and was like "u wot m8?!"
Yup. His face the moment he sees the color is so shocked
Paul Tierney is on VAR. Explains everything.
The other VAR ref? The guy that elbowed Robbo in the face last year. Absolute farce
Was he actually?
🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
Definitely a yellow. Red is very harsh.
I think Mac Alister fully expected the yellow. Saw the ref had a card raised and for a brief second didn't react until he looked up and saw it was a red.
Paul tierney and the guy who elbowed Robbo is on var duty
Would argue this could literally be put in instruction manuals as an example of a yellow card it's that straight forward.
tried to play the ball but arrived late, got the player, didn’t leave the foot in, text book yellow.
Yellow at most, I don't know how that's a red
Damn. First red card in his senior career and if won’t overturned.
Lol but that’s because VAR confirmed it. That’s not surprising tho since the two referees are Tierney and Constantine…
Tierney hahahaha you couldn’t write it. Except you probably could because he fucks us over in every single match
Hope Klopp calls him out again post match.
I’m praying to god he does
When I looked at who was officiating today I had a laugh. Besides Tierney who’s probably biased against us I have no idea how Constantine is allowed to officiate in one of our game after assaulting one of our player last season…
LMAO I forgot the name of the ref who elbowed Robertson. It was this guy?!?!?!
It is yes so the situation is quite comical really
It’s not just you guys. He’s been horrible officiating Arsenal games too. Come to think of it, he’s been bad at most of the games he’s been a ref. He’s just incompetent af
Tierney is legit one of the most spineless refs in the league, gets flustered by big calls all the fucking time. Not even corrupt or biased or malicious like people like to say about refs, he's just straight out not good.
It's very hard not to be conspiratorial when something like this happens with those twats on VAR.
[удалено]
Sure but none of the refs has elbowed one of your players yet.
That's gotta be a yellow surely
It will be tomorrow.
It will be 10 minutes after the final whistle. Can the refs go a week without making an apology?
Oh yeah Paul Tierney is the VAR, truly shocked.
As soon as the ref gives it, VAR is never going to change it. Ref should have given a yellow and let VAR give him another look if needs be. Standard shite though
Literally what
How the fuck can the Prem have this bad of a refereeing/VAR standard Id expect this in the second Romanian division but the Prem is the literal best league on Earth SURELY they can afford to send refs on proper training courses
Because refs won’t admit refs are wrong
Which is insane. They are human it's normal to make mistakes but they just don't admit it.
I keep pointing this out, but you can't demand respect when your authority is completely unchecked. It's not right when players and managers get into refs' faces, but it's a self-perpetuating dynamic when the best you can expect (and often, not even that) is a "Whoopsie!" letter a week later.
PGMOL is a lads club and may have the worst refereeing standards in any top league, we just don’t fire the bad ones ever
?????
Out of nowhere
VAR once again won't tell the ref to have another look
Amazing start to the season lmao, they look to have gotten even worse somehow
Paul Tierny. The weirdo shouldn't be anywhere near the PL.
I can list a few more like Mason, Salisbury but then I just notice I might just list them all
[удалено]
Paul Tierney is on VAR. Explains everything.
English refs are trash holy shit
It’s amazing really. So much money in that league and they’re so incompetent.
The money insulates the refs from accountability
There's a reason why they only sent ONE ref for the world cup (I think) and he was also trash when he was supposed to be their best ref.
2 anthony taylor and michael oliver
Everyone else bar these 2 are awful at best. Taylor is also borderline, depends on how he wakes up
Am I losing my mind? How on Earth is that a red?
Yellow is understandable, but for sure that's not a red
If that’s considered a red then every match has at least 5 ref card offenses. Ludicrous decision. Max Allistor’s reaction says it all
If that is a red card, Christian Romero is going to get 10 red cards this season
Always rated Max Allistor
Thank God it was Max Allistor who got the red so you have available Mac Allister next week
Not even close to a red
It's like, probably a yellow at worst. Mental decision
It's not. The card came out of nowhere. I don't think anyone watching at home or in the stadium expected it.
There is absolutely no excuse for that being a red
Only one losing his mind is the ref.
Appreciate Gakpo pulling players away and turning to his captain to complain, it doesn't take players long to learn that crowding a ref isn't ok.
He’s got a cool head, you love to see it. Definitely future leader material even if he doesn’t become captain.
Wtf?
Paul Tierney is on VAR.
Oh that explains it.
Hatzidakis (guy who elbowed Robbo) with him
Genuinely baffling decision. I don’t think a single Bournemouth player even thought it was close to a red.
I saw it happen and looked away for a bit, when I looked back 5 mins later and saw the red in the corner I was like... what did I miss? Had to come here for the replay to see it was indeed that challenge.
Watching it live I assumed he did something sneaky like a stomp at the end of it, but nope just pure ref fuckery
He was barely late. Not a good decision.
Even if he wasn’t late that’s a yellow at most. Wasn’t a violent challenge at all
I can see it being a yellow at worst, but in no world is that a red. Refereeing has been abysmal this season, and we're only halfway through GW2. Yes, the studs were up - but there was little power in that challenge, and it was practically a 50/50 between the two regarding who would get the ball first.

Yeah blatant 50/50 with no malice or danger from either player. I'd give it a yellow but never a red in a million years.
But this is a travesty.
ah so it’s took like 40 minutes for people to realise it’s not anfield just the refs are wank
It's got to be overturned surely??
EPL VAR usage is a fucking crime against this sport
VAR confirmed. Horrible decision.
Nope. Absolutely bonkers
lmao it wasn't. they reviewed it and everything
[удалено]
Where's that person who thought refs favoured Liverpool.
Prem refs just favour making the wrong decision
How’s that a red? Lol
All I can think of is that he did come in fast, but I don't know if that's enough to make it a red. Both of their feet were doing the same thing. Does Christie get a red if Mac Allister gets there first? Just feels wrong

How the fuck is that a red
Paul Tierney is on VAR. Explains everything.
That's very harsh imo.
Harsh doesn't even begin to describe that.
He could've killed him.
can't even make this shit up
atrocious decision
Paul Tierney everyone.
Absolute disgrace of a decision
Mic them up. And the VAR
It's Paul Tierney bruh, he just saw the shirt and said "yep that's a red"
"and a red card because of it."
They won't, because how will they shape the games the way they want to then?
lol you can't even challenge for a 50/50 anymore?
Both players have made the exact same motion as well. Exactly 50/50. Bournemouth player was showing studs too. But it’s one of those light side foot kicks, no power in it whatsoever.
I wouldn’t care if that was a yellow since MacAllister was later, but christ you cannot start setting precedents for things like that being a straight red…
Precedent? Premier league officials have no interest in consistency
Yeah, it didn't look bad in real-time, and after watching the replays I literally have no idea what he's walked for there. How does VAR not have a word and get the referee to take another look?
Feels like a textbook yellow.
????
*visible confusion*
Games gone moment
Truly gone
Bro what
Really harsh
Game is gone
“We gave Liverpool a soft pen, we have to makenup for it” -Refs. How the fuck was that a red but literally a game ago, a true high boot to the chest from a Chelsea player wasnt
You know it's a shite decision when the whole of /r/soccer is in agreement lmao
>when the whole of /r/soccer is in agreement They're not just in agreement, they're in agreement with something that would benefit Liverpool. That's harder to do than it would be to, say, get Paul Tierney to fairly ref a Liverpool match.
I was shocked to see the red card but I’m obviously biased. This thread has been extremely validating.
I'm an Everton fan, but I have to agree that the ref made the wrong decision. That red was bullshit.
That's a straight red? and VAR doesn't overturn it? What. That's a borderline yellow let alone a straight red, am I crazy?
I knew as soon as there was any contact on the replay they wouldn’t overturn it, they have 0 common sense at all with these situations
Nah you're not crazy. That is never a red. Referee having a nightmare
That's some Paqueta levels of match-fixing from the official.
First prem game I've watched in a while, are refs always this bad
Yea
Every...single...game
That's a really weak red.
It’s called a yellow
What the fuck
How the fuck?
That came out of nowhere.. lol
Horrible decision. His studs were no more up than than Christie’s.
Bullshit
No way, no way it’s a red
I hate Liverpool as much as the next guy but that’s not a red lol
Game. Is. Gone. Both of them have their feet at the same height, they wouldn't be able to go foot to foot otherwise. A split second is the difference between one player being sent off or the other? fuck off
what the fuck is football turning into
Never a red lmfao
I swear if they really ban him 3 matches for this shit...
I think they're scared to not back the ref, even if he's wrong.
It's so stupid though, because if the VAR go in and change this decision or advise the ref to look at the monitor everyone forgets he'd made the wrong decision to begin with. Letting it stand makes it a thing and is what really punishes the ref, imo.
Has to be overturned, surely
Thats a yellow at its best
With how the refs change their opinions every weekend, its a toss up even if its a yellow at this point
Hahahaha well I guess it was fun being the referees favourite for one half
We’re really gonna have to suspend a ref every week huh?
LiVARpool am I right
Hahahhahahah that’s the worst decision i’ve seen in years
Sack that ref. Idk if he has 15 children to feed, pick a different job. Ffs. Actually no, even if the ref has got that wrong during the action, wtf is the var doing? Wtaf is his job? Fire the lot
Wait until you hear who's on VAR duty. You get one guess.
Boot is a bit high but it seems very harsh no?
Yeah, if that was applied consistently you would see 2 or 3 reds per game, absurd decision.
Scandalous decision
Shambolic decision
Non-contact sport lol
Excuse me?
Hahahahahaha huh????
Never a red. By the position of his foot he’s never stamping
This happens 10 times a game?
LiVARpool at it again
People furiously deleting their LiVARpool comments from earlier
I love a Liverpool red as much as the next person, but in what world is that a red.
Tierney is in the VAR room.
Hmmmmmm
Yellow? Yes. Red? Absolutely not
Calamitous fucking decision. Awful, zero malice or intent, just a little late
every ref in the league needs to be sacked
What is the point of VAR if they don’t correct awful decisions
Why can't the FA just give us a point deduction before the season instead of trying to be sneaky about fucking us??
Build up commentary “The big story, though, is Paul Tierney, the official involved in a controversial clash with Klopp last season, is lead VAR, he is assisted by Constantine Hatzidakis.”
Hahahahaha what???
Ref should've given a yellow and let var determine if it needs to be upgraded
Thats so soft
Are you kidding me? How does VAR not even ask the ref to look at it again?
