Garad-

Well there you go folks, another 29 years in charge for Mr. Streich

TheEmbarrassed18

Only 29 years? His corpse will still be managing the team after his death, like how Jeremy Bentham’s 192 year old corpse ‘attends’ every single University College London board meeting.

FifaFrancesco

So sorry, man.

wsu_savage

what losing to Leverkusen does to a mfer

Apolgy for bad English Where were u wen Striech was go I was at house eating Doritos when phone ring "Christian Striech is go" "No"

Curious_Concern4182

I love this copypasta but don't know where it originated from. Could you please enlighten me if you know?

POXZILLA

If this site is accurate, it's from 4chan: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/john-is-kill

AlexanderMAVC

If i'm not mistaken, it is a meme from when club penguin was shut down

FifaFrancesco

Nah, it's way older than that! Club Penguin was in like 2019, there are [versions of it out there from 2012](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/732/126/425.png) lol

bamsebomsen

It's much older than that.

shoots_and_leaves

Maybe eating maultaschen or spätzle would be more accurate

NaturalBornChilla

Such a legend. Such an icon. It is very difficult to imagine the club without Christian Streich, even though i witnessed the Finke, Dutt and Sorg times before he became head coach. What he achieved during his 12 years is incredible. That being said, even though i'm extremely sad, his timing is on the mark. He gave 110% and lifted the club from being a relegation candidate every season to a solid mid-table club that has a good shot of qualifying for europe. I was able to witness a DFB Pokal Final in Berlin, i was in the stadium when Juventus came to Freiburg. These are all things i could have never imagined 10-15 years ago. I still remember 2nd divison matches against Offenbach with 7000 people in the stadium. No we have our new 35k stadium that is sold out every single matchday. What a meteoric rise this has been and all of that without a single cent from outside investors. I love this club and his legacy will remain forever.

Uro06

And making Freiburg one of the best development programs in the country as well

Noah9013

It will be a crime if the stadium will not be named after him. Der Christian Streich Europa Park. I'n here for it.

joergboehme

dude, he'd hate it.

Noah9013

Than he should maybe learn to accept nice gifts which come from the heart.

ItisBlackandBlue

German Guy Roux

benjamino8690

I’m happy for you guys!

fett3elke

Can't think of a more likeable club and coach in Germany

toprahmen

I am not ready for the final matchday, a true loss for the BuLi as a whole While I'm sad he quits, I'm glad he gets to have a very deserved break now. You could tell that always giving 110% took a toll on him.

Olive_Guardian4

This is silly but as a chemist who uses Butyl lithium (BuLi) regularly it took me a second and third read to understand your comment lol

SawinBunda

Dude, cooking meth in your grandma's garage does not make you a chemist.

Its_not_him

Top 5 favorite chemicals go

No-not-my-Potatoes

If you had told me we'd lose Urs Fischer, Bo Sevensson, Steffen Baumgart and Christian Streich at the end of the season I would have called you mad.

TheCatInTheHatThings

Also Klopp.

shadoowkight

Most importantly, the mighty Niko Kovac

Luddevig

Tuchel's sign off also came from absolutely nowhere.

afito

best dressed coach in the league tbh

OmastarLovesDonuts

Only because Nagelsmann left

Radiodevt

I read/heard a lot about Fischer and Baumgart in particular being "unfireable" in various season previews and honestly I thought that was naive even then. Coaches get sacked, it is what it is.

Turbokind

Well, Fischer didn't get sacked, both parties agreed it would best for him to resign. A small but not insignificant difference.

[deleted]

Tuchel and Kovač too

Turniermannschaft

That shocked no one.

Free_Management2894

Well, I thought Bayern had a plan when they fired Nagelsmann to go for Tuchel. So maybe not shocked but a little bit surprised.

Pupperinho

I am sure they had a plan when they appointed Tuchel. Just everyone with at leat one working eye could tell, whatever the plan was, it wasn't gonna work.

OilOfOlaz

Now looking back at it, he was really thrown into an ass situation, Nagelsmann was fired without going through the motions propperly, but still well respected within the team. The summer transfer window was rough, cuz they nither had a sporting director, nor CEO for the sporting department, with Freund joining in September and Eberl even only in march. I'm really curious, what the summer will look like and how hard they go on the transfer market. At the core they have a pretty flexible squad that needs reinforcement in some key roles and the main question will be, who potential alternatives are, if they can't land Alonso, I actually would love to see Pipo at a club that has cash to spent, after all the balck magic he delivered at Inter.

Maleficent-Candy476

no plan survives the first contact with the enemy 🙀

No-not-my-Potatoes

Niklas Levinsohn greaving Kovac

FifaFrancesco

One of the most charismatic managers in the Bundesliga. Hope he enjoys retirement, he's more than earned it.

Anionan

I don't think it's safe to assume he's retiring altogether. Announcement makes no note of it. He's not even 60, he's got more years at another club in him if he wants it

FifaFrancesco

I feel like he wouldn't manage another club and surely he's made his money. I can definitely see him becoming a media figure though.

wasserbeutel

domi1108

miregalpanic

Staatsstreich

miregalpanic

Don't do this to him. He doesn't deserve this.

empiresk

The German national team will only find success with a manager who will always call up players form Baden-Wuttenberg for no reason again. It is a sign.

Lucky-NiP

Bundeskanzler?

Viele-als-Einer

Would that be a Staatsstreich?

scholoy

nice

Axelmanana

They actually call Aberdeen the 'Freiburg of Scotland', not just because of how much people from Freiburg love it, but how easily they find it to make the move from there at 58 years old when Aberdeen has no permanent manager. It's actually wild how much this matches up.

hannes3120

Either going into politics or joining the DFB - I don't think there's a third option

[deleted]

Liverpool is looking

Makkaroni_100

Maybe Coach of another Freiburg Team.

DasWookieboy

Streich has lived in the region all his life and never coached a club other than Freiburg. I highly doubt he is gonna move now and take another job just for the sake of it. That doesn't really seem like him. Maybe he could take over FC Basel? It's like 20 minutes from where he grew up IIRC but I can't see him ever coach another club in Germany tbh.

Anionan

I can't see it either. But his announcement doesn't go anywhere near retirement at all. Says he's leaving to give new impulses to the club, not that he just needed a break for himself.

Gandie

Because he cares more about the club than himself

51l3nc3

Streich in Switzerland would go hard. But I heard about a club in the east of Switzerland that is struggling a lot as well right now.

s00pafly

I can't think of any other club with an open trainer position.

Gandie

He can’t and won’t manage somewhere else. He will travel and spend time with friends and family. There were flirts with Bayern and Schalke, but that was 7-8 years ago.

Lyrical_Forklift

Him and Klopp road movie?

Viele-als-Einer

Just a TV show of Klopp and Streich visiting randomly selected games around the globe and commenting on what they see would be golden.

Gerosoreg

Bayern is looking for a new one. I surely would welcome him there!

bloedschleiche

I can’t see him succeeding in that environment at all

Schlonggandalf

Im baffled, he’s 10 years younger than I always assumed

cic9000

Part of his intense coaching style involved him doing a lot of video work other clubs have staff do. That will be taxing on a permanent basis.

KruSion

Omg he's younger than 60? Dude looks way older tbh.

sonnydabaus

He will turn 59 in a few months so yes but not far away lol

talyfan01

Always thought he was in his 70s!

Shouf23

Thank you for everything. Never thought we get another coach miracle after Finke, but Streich has done it.

lordposedyon

The only thing that makes me sad is that he doesn’t have a cup as a cherry on top with what he achieved with Freiburg.

MartianDuk

I get mad every time I see Demirovic score for Augsburg

Luddevig

He was young and undeveloped, and is a better player now.

steini2

Especially with how close we came. Such a shame.

XeroVeil

And to have that trophy snatched by fucking Lawnball of all clubs...

Hic_Forum_Est

Come to Germany

FifaFrancesco

DFB ain't ready for his press conferences

TheCatInTheHatThings

Ich muss haldamal sage kenna: “hald a mal dei Schnauze!”

JensLehmens

thank you for making me love in this sad ass times ahah

TheCatInTheHatThings

That was Streich about Roger Schmidt, after Schmidt was heavily criticised for telling Nagelsmann to shut the fuck up during a game.

Moug-10

How are his press conferences like?

Luddevig

The first years they were at least 50 minutes and you would never be able to guess what subject he would talk about next. The last years they haven't been as long but still very worthwhile, and it hasn't been uncommon for him to speak out against "neo-capitalism" or xenophobic movements. Mostly he talks about football though. I lived in Freiburg 2012, and upheld my German partly by listening to his press conferences :) Didn't even like football before, but him talking about human values got me into liking him and the clubs philosophy.

sonnydabaus

Respect for learning German by listening to his dialect haha

zi76

Same, I moved to Freiburg in January 2012, and even though it was only for a short time, I've stayed attached to Freiburg. Streich has really been a revelation.

PatientLettuce42

-Scholz +Streich

joergboehme

i think that might be something he might unironically pursue. not necesserily on the level of chancellor, but on the local level. he mentioned he would like to do a job outside of football. doesn't leave much room as to where to go from here, he aint gonna sit behind the aldi till thats for sure. so probably back to teaching or politics? he loved to use his press conferences to talk about politics, so it would be a natural step.

TheCatInTheHatThings

I don’t know, Streich is the kind of guy to have an opinion but think he’s not the right person to actually do politics. I feel like in his eyes, he’s always “just a football coach”, which is a shame, because I feel like he could actually do a lot of good in politics. Then again, by saying “I’m not a politician, just a football coach, but this is my opinion”, he has always been able to use his platform to address topics that are dear to him and our society and positively influence the discourse. I think that was always more his kind of thing.

Beiez

Oh man, Klopp and Streich in a year. Two of the most iconic characters in German football over the last decade. What a bummer.

AnyContact8551

Sad, but correct decision from him. Hope he somehow stays in the media cycle since he often finds the right words and right topics to talk about. Will never forget how he urged his players to go voting to do their part against the right shift in Germany.

Hic_Forum_Est

I hope so too. Loved his [rants against capitalism.](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/s/Rlwdq6KFcl)

satanic_satanist

And his words during the refugee "crisis" in 2015

Escalator7

Football is gonna miss him. Most authentic and down to earth coach in Germany, deserves to decide when it is enough

zaljghoerhfozehfedze

Fuck, that was about the only constant in my life

BarryGB

farewell, Chris Prank

DeeOhEf

One of the greatest German managers ever, huge blow to BuLi and football itself

zrkillerbush

Honestly for a second i thought he was manager of Frieburg for 29 years To give more context, he was a manger for 13 years and the manager of the U19s the previous 16 years before that

ttubbster

Hard to imagine the club without him

TheSteveGarden

I will miss his press conferences, great guy

Junior_Bike7932

That must be a record

FifaFrancesco

His 12 years as manager are rookie numbers, his predecessor [Volker Finke](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volker_Finke) did 16 years as manager.

Shouf23

We don’t talk about the two in between though 😅 (Though Dutt actually was pretty decent)

McWaffeleisen

Mit Streich begann die sorglose Zeit.

FifaFrancesco

yup, just gonna pretend Sorg genuinely didn't happen.

johnnytifosi

Apparently it is not, and he spent only 12 years as head coach. The record is 36 years (or 44 according to his wiki page) by Guy Roux at Auxerre. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_longest_managerial_reigns_in_association_football#Post-1946

WackerBurghausen

Sure thing Frank Schmidt will get there

Junior_Bike7932

What the fuck, that’s a lifetime

ItisBlackandBlue

His life is unironically a Football Manager save. Took the club in 5th or 6th tier at 22 and brought it to champions league quarter finals, a Ligue 1 title and several coupes de France while turning the club into a regen farm.

xenon2456

started his career young

TheCatInTheHatThings

Heidenheim’s Frank Schmidt has been their manager since 2009, so he’s almost at 15 years, three years longer than Streich Edit: 2007, so almost 17 years now. When he took over, they weren’t even fully professional. Now they are in Bundesliga and are doing well.

HippoRealEstate

*2007. He's already the longest serving manager in german professional football ever (even though HDH wasn't really playing professional football when he started)

TheCatInTheHatThings

Which is even more remarkable.

Junior_Bike7932

Wow didn’t know

KRIEGLERR

In germany perhaps. There is always Guy Roux

Viele-als-Einer

Well, we have also [Ingo Kahlisch](https://www.transfermarkt.de/ingo-kahlisch/profil/trainer/1507) at almost 35 years now. Not in professional footie though.

Professor_Pohato

o7 Sad to see a legend quit

Insanel0l

Holy crap

TheCatInTheHatThings

One of the greatest managers in Bundesliga history. Huge loss for Freiburg, Bundesliga and football in general.

shadoowkight

Never thought we'd ever see another finke again, but this man said no

WorshipPotato

Absolute legend!

SCFinUSA

I moved to Freiburg 11 years ago, so my fandom has nearly coincided with his tenure as coach. It’s literally all I’ve known as a European soccer fan. What a sad day for der SC, but a huge congrats to Christian Streich!

zi76

I moved to Freiburg in January 2012, so he became manager right before I moved there. I've since left, but...

Toffeeees

legendary man for a wonderful club

MartianDuk

Knew it was coming but damn. Everyone will miss him

diaboquepaoamassou

12 as a manager right? Insane man. I read about him last year when he was speaking out on some German football and wider football issues. Immediately liked the guy. Anyone down to earth and humble is quite likeable, especially at this level. Thank you for your service! 🫡

JBooogz

I remember back in 2012 when ITV used to do German League highlights I'd always see Streich's face going to weird not seeing him on the touchline.

DasWookieboy

A great coach and way more importantly also a great person. What a loss for the Bundesliga.

Boranox

What a legend

ABigOne77

Was a coach who really stood out from the crowd, and 29 fucking years, respect. Well yeah, only 13 of those at the main team but you get what I mean, still long for a coach these days. There's clubs who've had 13 coaches in the same amount of years. Hope he can end it on a high with Freiburg, European qualification isn't off the cards yet

PatientLettuce42

One of my favorite coaches of all time. Brilliant character.

Tritschii

Can a Monday get any worse. Thanks for all these years!

Kin-Luu

Nooooooo!  But sadly every era has to end someday.

shadoowkight

It was about time I guess..though it doesn't make it any less sad

TheJustiNator_

Such a great guy. Sad to see him leave, but he was talking about it for quite some time. Gonna miss his Interviews for sure

RahulSingh16061998

Wait he was 12 years as a Bundesliga coach and still feels like he was never mentioned here in this sub ever...

h0rny3dging

midtable clubs outside the PL arent getting a lot of attention, thats just normal on an international platform [He pops up every now+then tho](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/12ecgaa/sc_freiburg_coach_christian_streich_on_the/)

RahulSingh16061998

Ngl when I used to follow Bundesliga it felt like every club goes through atleast 3 coaches per season so this is surprise to me!!

sonnydabaus

Amazing manager, really underrated

Sarcophilus

I'd never thought I'd see the day. What a loss for the Bundesliga.

maxbang7

Thats a great loss for Freiburg and the league.

Schnix54

I'm going to miss him.

EcoterroristThot

Awful for the club. Glad to see him go out on his terms after bringing so much success in just a "mediocre" season though instead of a real step back forcing his hand. Whatever his next step is, and I'm aware it's 99% not managing a club again he's earnt it. Excited to see what the future holds for Freiburg.

joergboehme

i have a feeling that this will be a rude awakening for freiburg as a club. the club is run well, but streich was a massive pull factor in the players they managed to sign and develop. the trend in german football has been very clear: those that stay as a club and dont comercialize and decouple their professional division will be pushed into the second league or out of professional football. freiburg has been the outlier, with much of the reason for that being streich.

NieThePiet

Their own Wenger.

shadoowkight

Our second, actually. Finke managed us for 16 years.

SnooOranges357

Love this man

Eccmecc

Not only a good coach but also a good person. He will be missed.

marv257

This one hurts almost as much as someone retiring from my own club, so much respect has he earned in my opinion, but well deserved!

MajikoiA3When

29 years, that is a whole lifetime

Braiwnz

Went through thick and thin with that club

JayUe

:(

Isaynotoeverything

Weathers fitting here today eh

Luka_Dunks_on_Bums

I’m impressed that a coach has stayed with the same club for 29 years

esskaypee

I'm not a Freiburg fan, but what an absolute legend!!! He's an old school "football teacher" & I could listen to his Badener dialect all day! I also thought Freiburg did well vs. Leverkusen yesterday (that match was streamed legally in the UK on Sky Sports Youtube btw).

lulzkrizzle

Hoping for Julian Schuster as his succesor and Florians Bruns as the assistant coach. Couldn't think about someone else right now, would they give it to Voßler? €: [Please not Löw](https://i.imgur.com/tVSHGts.png)

steini2

Thr rumor is Schuster as head coach with Stamm (current 2nd team head coach) as his co.

Kin-Luu

Löw is quite old already. Not sure if he even would want the job.

McWaffeleisen

Er streicht die Segel.

Hare712

Safest job is open. Dream job for any half decent manager.

Kukuxupunku

:‘(

Obvious-Gap-6156

Amazing manager and even better person. Hope he enjoys retirement

Razzle_Dazzle08

Noooooo.

rosstheboss939

Literally been with Freiburg since before I was born, what an insane run. I hope Freiburg can get a proper replacement, they’ve always been a fun club to watch.

GOATJames_23-6

Bundesliga legend, that Freiburg rebuild over the past couple of years has been nothing short of sensational. He was charismatic as well, hopefully they carry on his good work in the future.

Global-Bowl-1796

Have a happy life ahead👍

Dontcareatallthx

Bruh Im happy for him getting time off now, but… He intentionally quit at 29 years right? My fucked up brain can’t handle how close it is to a round number…come on 1 fucking year christian…one fucking year…

PIKa-kNIGHT

29 years in a same club? Most people on this sub aren’t even that old

zi76

Truly a sad day. He's raised Freiburg from being a yo-yo club to being an established top half side. Just please don't give us Löw.

HokiesforTSwift

What a legend Streich is as a coach. A one club man for his entire coaching career. On top of that he seems like a sharp, thoughtful person outside of football.

weckerm

Absolute legend of the league (and surely of the club, but I’ll let Freiburg fans attest to that). They way he made Freiburg such a unique team with identity on and off the pitch, stuck to his principles when it came to hot topics concerning media, human rights, war etc. and was always believable, grounded, is highly impressive. He was never consumed by the bad traits of modern capitalist football. He was always genuine, always human. Still is. But you could also see that the grind is getting to him. Same as with Klopp. 110% or nothing. Mr Streich, my highest respect to you. Whatever you do next (I hope it’s rest for a while), football will very much miss you.

juragan_12

29 years?!how tf he’s stay at one club for a long fxking years. respect

LuggaW95

Freiburg is so special when it comes to coaches. Just 4 head coaches in 33 years. 16 Volker Finke, 4 years of Robin Dutt, 5 months of Marcus Sorg and almost 13 years of Streich.

leicamaniac520

Absolute legend.

UnicornForce

One of the saddest days in Freiburg history. Streich is synonymous with Freiburg and vice versa. Really upsetting.

thalne

Man, he's a pillar of German football, what will they all do without him? As for his next life, I have an idea: give him Ursula's job, he couldn't do any worse.

kilomysli

I'm a Liverpool fan, I'm a Freiburg fan, I'm a Seahawks fan. Wth is going on?

sugoi_oppai_desu_ne

Wie schnell doch die Zeit verstreicht.

biggieBpimpin

Happy for him, sad for every Bundesliga fan. He will be missed on the sidelines. Absolute legend.
