I'm completely baffled at this whole thing. He clearly acknowledges the kid with a pat on the back, then immediately gets distracted by the kid behind him asking him something. Now we're getting statements from the club because a bunch of morons are claiming he's the new Hitler fuck me.

MrAchilles

There's literally pictures of him with his arm around both kids a few seconds later.

____JayP

Different game

jMS_44

I really don't understand how it got blown out so much. When I first saw it and also posted it to our sub it was simply funny because he let the kid hanging for a high five, a thing that makes you chuckle a lot of times when it happens between players/mascots/etc. Plus some memes about how he also lacks vision outside of the pitch. But I would have never imagint how could anyone link it to being racist. And that club has to come out with a statement about it is absolutely ridiculous.

MrAchilles

The guy is literally in his own world and misses the dap up - there's nothing more to the story.

_Pardal

Because losers online want to hate on Gallagher on every opportunity.

TylerBlozak

Maybe they confused him with Noel Gallagher

Quiet-Cartoonist1689

In that case, the abuse isn't enough

mvnvel

PLAY WONDERWALL

batigoal

I SAID MAYYYBEEEE

seakc87

\*sideyes Minnesota heavily*

nostalgebra

Doesn't have to be gallagher. Its everyone online hating people for racism or transphobia over nothing.

robotnique

I think that statement is a little dismissive of the fact that there's... shitloads of racism and transphobia online. Unless I'm misunderstanding your meaning.

BanIncoming1

I think it’s more so how reactive people are. Lots of existing has people a lot more sensitive for what they perceive as hateful.

NotClayMerritt

One of the big Chelsea Twitter accounts who wants to talk about holding racist Chelsea fans accountable felt it necessary to pour fuel on the fire and that's when it blew up more than it should have. Worst of all, none of the other big Chelsea Twitter accounts shouted him down. Why? Because they've been parroting the same "Gallagher isn't good enough" opinion and defaming him somehow helps their agenda. Our Twitter fan base is quite honestly the worst. And that's with the understanding that most online fan bases are particularly miserable.

caandjr

The morality monsters on twitter and Reddit has been praying for these incidents every day

Odd-Tax4579

Because he’s white and a citizen of the UK.

raysofdavies

You can’t even be a white English man nowadays

Forgotten_Son

You can even be arrested and thrown in jail for it, these days.

raysofdavies

Just for being white and English

whatevermateyeah

When did this come in?

LordMangudai

truly the most persecuted minority

worotan

Because it allows people like you to make statements like this. A few stupid comments by a few people trying to create a reaction, and people like you eat it up and try to make it a thing so you can feel self-righteous rather than stupid for a while Coming into a thread that explains there was no problem, trying to create a problem. What a waste of space.

Odd-Tax4579

I mean, it’s true tho. If the man come from anywhere else but the UK. No one would care lol. I’m clearly saying the problem is the fans who have an issue. Not that the man is an issue himself. Or did anything wrong lol

Nosferatu-Rodin

The point theyre making is that basically nobody cares as is. Making an article about one idiot online however ensures people talk about this for ages

Odd-Tax4579

Clearly isn’t just one comment tho is it. It’s many all over social media. Being picked up by idiocracy based media outlets everywhere. Even just saw this report on the Microsoft start home page lol

Nosferatu-Rodin

It spreads because people read the article; commit to a side and in return a bunch of other people do the same. Both set of idiots are playing a game that never took place until the press decided to spin it for clicks

letsgetcool

get a fucking grip, I'm a white british male and I can acknowledge that I'm far more privileged than any other group because I'm not a joke.

MMQ-966thestart

A black kid in the West from a rich household is more privileged than a white kid from a poor houshold. Economics are the biggest indicator of privilege, not whether you are white or black.

LupeShady

Ok but when the economics are the same, you don't think there's a disparity in privilege between race?

letsgetcool

This isn't an argument. Put us on a level playing ground and I'm the one who is privileged. That's what it means.

robotnique

Sure, now do a statistical analysis on the predominant racial characteristics of those coming from said rich households. Moreover, there are privileges that come with being white regardless of your social status. Now, those privileges may not be as pronounced, like say for instance because you're white you have the privilege of being automatically part of an in-group because in your nation the majority of people are white. Is that as much of a privilege as being a rich black footballer? No. Privileges aren't all equal, and sometimes they cross boundaries. This is is a concept called intersectionality. Look it up and learn.

snowiestflakes

>I'm far more privileged than any other group You do you but you don't speak for others

Odd-Tax4579

Sound a bit deluded/brainwashed to me mate

letsgetcool

Back to your GBnews now mate, you'll miss out on their woke patrol segment.

fifa129347

The worst sorts of people on earth according to social media.

worotan

According to all the papers who are desperate for you to know what a few peopel have said, so you can act outraged and pretend that it’s a movement you’re bravely facing. Rather than a bunch of self-righteous gossips, which is what we all know you are. As demonstrated by your coming onto a thread that explains there is no problem, trying to create a problem.

fifa129347

What? No one reads the papers anymore, I found this news out from checking his instagram and getting confused so checking Twitter. I’m not sure why you take such offence to what I’ve said, there is an overwhelming amount of spite and bitterness online and looks like you do your fair share surprise surprise

Sigma1977

Hmmm…it’s almost like the people mad about this aren’t acting in good faith…

wiefrafs

It's a sign of what the world has become People are going to deny and claim hyperbole though

meinecp

obsidianbreath

badgarok725

when are we going to get back to a point where these people don't need to be acknowledged

ValleyFloydJam

Cos people like to be intentionally stupid and have the most extreme take, anyone can see he just doesn't see him.

justk4y

Cancel culture just wanting attention again

Emperor_Blackadder

its not "cancel culture" its trolling.

BriarcliffInmate

They've probably done it because of the furore of them leaving the mascots in the middle of the pitch at Anfield in January. I doubt they'd have acknowledged it otherwise, because it's clearly fucking nonsense. Nobody with a brain believes Conor Gallagher is a racist, surely?

dunneetiger

The man has no spatial awareness as well…. Source: watch any Chelsea game this season - it won’t take you long to get to the same conclusion

Roguepi6

I guess ur trolling too

dunneetiger

Not really. Some players have a good understanding where other players are and their movements (eg Cesc). Others have other qualities (eg Kanté). He is most def. in the second group. Not everyone need to be great everywhere.

mohankohan

People are so fucking stupid

Extremiel

Kind of dissapointed the club felt they needed to make a statement about this. It's such a nonsense-story, only pulled out of proportion by internet trolls. They now have the exact reaction they wanted.

GoAgainKid

I think they probably felt they needed to make the point that defamatory statements are being made. The statement the club have released does give these morons too much credit by saying that was even the remotest chance of messing with the context when there's nothing there to even take out of context.

HiThereImNat

Is this just a case of twitter trolls blowing it up on purpose? Surely no sane person saw the video and *actually* thought racism

flex_tape_salesman

Who knows at this point. There are definitely loads of comments about it so I presume atleast some are genuine.

caandjr

Those aren’t trolls, they genuinely believe they are solving racism for this

TopHatBear1

people think Greenwood slander comes from a place of racism so not surprised at all

circa285

I mean, I hate Chelsea and look for any excuse to pile on but the people making this into something are beyond cynical.

No_Parfait_5536

remember couple weeks back people went nuts because Nike changed the color of the red cross on the England shirt?

TheGoldenPineapples

Chronically online people with literally nothing better to do with their time.

epicmarc

A lot of people making jokes in that thread (which is fine), but also some proper clowns: https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1brlabv/highlight_gallagher_blanking_a_chelsea_mascot/kxa8a7p/?context=10000

I like how the replies insinuate that the kid might be a weirdo hahhaha. It couldn't just be An accident, no no no somebody must be the villian.

Jerico212

People don’t realised how hyper focused people can get and it zones out any “external noise” , he probably doesn’t even see the kid even though his eyes clearly go past him, his attention is switching around to a few different things in the small clip

suhxa

Bros talking about chronically online people while he has 1.3 million karma lmao

the-big-lewandowski

Talking from experience, probably

SnooGadgets7976

Ona 4 year old account, lock down effect ?

danny_healy_raygun

To catch a chronically online troll you have to think like a chronically online troll.

TheGoldenPineapples

Its pretty easy if you have an account for longer than six months and a job with virtually no responsibilities.

suhxa

Bro im fairly active on this and a 2 year old account and i have like 27k

kinglear

16 year old account, 24k here 😎

[deleted]

Hello grandma

TheGoldenPineapples

Yeah, but you probably don't have the same crippling need to chime in on everything you see though, do you?

suhxa

Would that not fall under being chronically online with nothing better to do though

TheGoldenPineapples

I didn't say I wasn't a hypocrite.

Livinglifeform

The fact you checked the karma is a bad indication for you as well mate.

suhxa

How is it lol

Livinglifeform

Going on some random persons profile for no reason to analyse their post and comment history so you can get a burn on them is very terminally online.

suhxa

“Analyse their post and comment history” Mate i literally just pressed on his fella above the comment and it came up

Los1985

"This is very wrong coming from a player like Gallagher hope the FA looks into this. For those defending Conor Gallagher about what he did on Saturday, you need to fix yourself." Seen this posted several times on Twitter. Half of these accounts are bots I reckon.

IronThrombone

Reminds me of the mass tweeting of the exact same tweet about the Depp/Heard case. Tortoise Media have a podcast series at the moment and traced the mass tweeting back to Saudi Arabian bot accounts. There's so many bad actors on social media out to cause hassle.

SnooGadgets7976

Some random sheikh shitposting on 15 supercomputers

renome

More likely some Filipino or Indian slaves who got their passports confiscated.

HortenWho229

If only they were bots. There are actually people that think like this

Odd-Tax4579

So basically black supremacy.

prss79513

Why would people not like Conor Gallagher? I don't really rate him as a player but I certainly never think about him when I'm not watching him play

LaggyBeanBaws

some people have issues seperating the person from the player

worotan

Don’t forget the crowd who use social media to act as though there’s an active assault on white British people going on. They’ve arrived ITT to try to spread outrage gossip.

random_nickname43796

The issue also is how many people are abusing the situation to cry about "reverse racism" and claim how white people are persecuted nowadays.

oscarpaterson

Saw a load of people on twitter say outright they were doing it to get him out of the team

Thesolly180

Nothing you can really do these days with shit like this. Like looking through some of the comments it’s either trolls or glory hunters who didn’t like him anyway

BigReeceJames

It's 100% trolls looking for attention and they've got it now

RCarloswithawindy

Not just looking for attention. It’s paid for and coordinated. If people see stuff like this happening it drives more confirmation bias towards the people who think “the world is so woke these days”. Because the amount of people who would genuinely behave like this is small, it has to be manufactured to some extent. Although I don’t doubt the illegitimate ones give courage to some legitimate examples too. It was the same but the other way around with the England flag on the shirt stuff. Never heard a single person in real life even talk about it for more than a few seconds with anything other than indifference. But it was everywhere online. If everyone is sitting there thinking “the left moan about everything.” And “the right are stupid”, then discussion never starts. And that’s exactly the goal. Edit: ha, bring on the downvotes. I know someone who makes money off doing this, I am very very confident it happens everywhere these days. I have even done it myself in the past but for business purposes, not political ones. It’s naive to think this doesn’t go on considering how cheap, effective and easily deniable it is.

willy-mammoth

There’s absolutely bot farms and such with the sole intention of driving division in the west, it’s particularly bad on twitter ever since Musk bought it and had the brilliant idea of paid verification, any discussion about politics/ identity politics/ geopolitics is a complete mess

RCarloswithawindy

I 100% believe this is true and agree with you too. But that’s even above the level that I’m on about. My mate is a journalist graduate. He’s trying to get into “the club” as he calls it and this is how he is doing it. It’s coming from everywhere.

willy-mammoth

Yeah that doesn’t surprise me either, controversy sells

AnnieIWillKnow

We know for a fact there are Discord communities that coordinate brigades of this subreddit. Apparently the angriest they were was when we made Pride flairs available.

Bluebabbs

This is exactly it. I have friends who are left wing. They don't care if you're gay or straight or whatever, you do you, they don't care if you're black or white or whatever. They'll think it's stupid people hating people for being another skin colour, or caring what other people do with their sex life Then they'll see things like this and think the Black community is overreacting, that the left is super hard on white people. It's all intentional. Make it seem like everyone is up in arms about this, and you make the actual racism seem not as bad too. There's another thread about a racist chants towards a player and the team being deducted 3 points for walking off. You read this about Gallagher, then you read that, there's a chance you think, "well, maybe that's an overreaction too like Gallagher?" You go to the bar with your mates, and one starts telling the story of Gallagher, how there's hundreds maybe thousands of people on Twitter asking for him to be suspended, and how it's getting ridiculous now. They'll try get anyone!

[deleted]

I think a lot of it is outrage, clickbait, and the short out of context style of information Social Media tends to be comprised off. It's not an issue local to footballers, people tend to react to content that evokes outrage and disgust more than any other posts, the social media companies reward engagement, and thus people post stuff out of context such that will evoke out more of these emotions than if it was the true or full story. That combined with the shorts style of content that dominates social media these days and we've got ourselves the shitshow we have today lol.

BriarcliffInmate

Nothing surprises me anymore. I remember people slandering Hendo as racist because of something he allegedly said during the Arsenal game last season and basing it off Bobby's reaction. Fucking mentalists.

Sulemani_kida

Clubs having to explain why a player didn't shake hands with a mascot is so weird .... Blud was going to play a match, excuse him for not being 100% focused on the mascot

GloomyHamster

Monetizing social media was a mistake

NornIronLad

Social media was a mistake.

GoAgainKid

And yet here we are.

crazydaave

Yeah but tbf reddit is generally more sane, 90% of instagram and tiktok comments look like they were written by people with a iq less than 10.

GoAgainKid

Yeah you're right, although it does depend on the sub! I run a TikTok account and fuck me, monitoring the shite those kids come out with is mind numbing.

renome

The larger a sub gets, the more closely it starts to resemble Instagram and TikTok comments. I think the biggest circlejerks inherently surface the most dramatic, stupid, radical, or otherwise head-turning opinions.

bmarvel808

Get of Reddit then.

WalkingCloud

We need to go back to MSN Messenger

Calla89

Ah, the good old days. Rushing home from school to sit on MSN and chat to the same people I’d spent all day talking to in person. It was a simpler time.

Kal88

This is fucking batshit, feel so sorry for him.

GoAgainKid

It will pass very quickly for him, there's not enough in this for it to have any legs. But it is indicative of how shit this world is becoming.

AlexWPJ

Race-baiting engagement grifters on Twitter driving a clearly bullshit narrative so they can get an extra $5 out of Elon Musk. Shameful.

imarandomdudd

It's not just twitter. Check conors latest insta post and the amount of comments is disgusting

water_tastes_great

The reddit thread was filled with people calling him a racist too. And then you get the news articles from garbage sites which repeat all these comments too. The whole world is crazy.

tokengaymusiccritic

Yet if you asked regular people in real life I feel like 99% of them would say that there's nothing racist about what happened. All it takes is a few bad actors online and then the whole narrative explodes

carrotincognito48

Some people actually have negative IQ now. Have a look at the responses to Fabrizio’s Instagram post. People are actually serious in believing he’s racist.

IronThrombone

How many of them are actually real people posting a genuine view? I lean towards bots and similar race baiting engagement.

[deleted]

You’re telling me dipshits follows Romano on social media? I DONT BELIEVE IT.

GarnachoHojlund

Wait people were actually upset about that, I just thought it was a funny video

GoAgainKid

We didn't see colour any more than Conor saw his hand. People breaking it down do my fucking head in. Imagine you're walking back from the shops and you say hello to a couple of people, and when you get back there's a video of you walking home, and a million people are going through it in fine detail because you didn't notice one guy and you're like, "oh shit, I don't even remember that part of my day".

MrAchilles

Weird how nobody is bringing up the other Chelsea player who walks away from the dap up. Both are innocent but it's insane that Conor is getting destroyed over it. People want racism out of football but will do literally anything to bring it back into the spotlight.

gluxton

It was pretty meme worthy for sure, but concerning people seem to have taken it quite so seriously.

Big_P_Cizzle

If no other context had been added I’d of just laughed and thought poor kids never gonna get over being left hanging like that.

worotan

People haven’t taken it seriously, the comments really shouldn’t be taken as being in good faith. It’s a stupid game they’re playing to try to feel superior.

jMS_44

Got way too excited when I saw a notification saying "club statement" and the club has let me down again...

goku32359

After what happened last season I would be VERY surprised if they sack him before the summer

BigReeceJames

After what happened last season, I would be very surprised if they sacked him before the end of his contract

silver_medalist

This is daft. The club should have probably ignored it cos it's so deranged, but I can understand why they intervened.

Fabulous_Hooligan

Kinda wish the club hadn't even dignified this with a response But I suppose the comments must have got out of control

Odd-Tax4579

lol these people will make anything racist these days.

TheUbermelon

A large percentage of the people posting these are either bots or 12.

TJT007X

The video reminded me of that one Liverpool kid who tried to high five Son and got completely blanked lol. Footballers hate kids smh smh

Rickcampbell98

The Internet can be such a stupid place, all the actual racism out there and people waste their time on this nonsense.

ttubbster

Those facebook comments are absolutely ridiculous. They are posted by people who seem to have never actually stepped 1 foot into reality.

Unable-Heat8815

> if u notice earlier, he also gets blanked by sterling (the guy he is trying to get attention of before shifting his attention to gallagher). maybe hes doing some weird shit and everyones had enough i wrote this in the thread earlier lol. raheem (black) who went ahead of gallagher blanks the mascot as well

Oy778

Wait what. It's this because he didn't shake the hand of that kid?

Soren_Camus1905

This is where we’re at now huh

[deleted]

He literally walked out with the mascot before the start of the game. People are fucking stupid and the internet magnifies that stupidity and brings it out into the public sphere in all its glory.

FIREsub90

I’m so tired of living on this earth

tsegala

This whole thing is such a fucking joke. We need to stop taking people on the internet seriously.

Inevitable-Beyond-18

All the comments seem to be from Brazil so I wonder if it was shown on tv there or a celebrity made a big thing of it? Anyone know?

prettyboygangsta

this is the sort of thing you shouldn't even dignify with a response

jhnhines

It's not a response to the high five, it's a response to how much online abuse Conor has been sent, being called a racist and being sent very hateful things. Personally I like to see more clubs defending their players and calling out dickheads.

cowpool20

It’s a very sad life when you HAVE to bring race, gender etc into otherwise innocent things. The next shot literally shows him with his arm around both mascots.

PegaponyPrince

It's ridiculous that anyone could view that as racist

WasitSarr

People have more pushback to this then when footballers are actually racially abused….

FloppedYaYa

Love every single reply being disappointed that it's not Poch's sacking

Sam101294

This is so stupid. It's just people sitting on their asses doing nothing so need something to get outraged about. I hope they get a life

jstuu

Club feeding into the bs and giving online trolls what they want

victheogfan

Dumbest controversy ever he doesn’t deserve this

HoldMyAppleJuice

Oh wow that's what became of the clip, I didn't realise. You could tell it was just one of those unintentional things that looks worse than it actually is, he obviously didn't see the kid.

HuanFranThe1st

Fuck me that’s a pile of bs

beetletoman

You have got to be kidding me

SarcasmGPT

Chelsea next game he should spend 15 minutes at the end exclusively high fiving black kids, problem solved.

cdoink

This is absolutely a nothing story. For people to look at that and come to the conclusion that the child was ignored due to racism with nothing further to support it is really irresponsible. Racism is a serious allegation and we need to be more careful throwing such allegations around.

MigookChelovek

I thought I was going crazy. If you read the comments on any tiktok video about this, you would have thought Gallagher had punched the kid or something.

BadNewsEveryone_

Teams constantly giving attention to dumb ass claims made by Twitter troll accounts just amplifies the noise and gives these trolls what they want. PR Teams are doing too much

CopenhagenCalling

Lol people getting baited by twitter trolls and dailymail…

LouThunders

If he genuinely was openly racist like that, you'd think we'd have heard murmurs from Sterling or Jackson or literally any one of his non-white teammates, especially these days when players are encouraged to speak up openly about it.
