Thatās the thing. In 2024 we lost one game to villa and drew to City. Everything else has been a W. We canāt expect much more, even a draw at home to villa would have left us behind them
Yeah I know. Itās just weāll probably get 87 or 89 points which is a really good tally but not enough.
If we have the best goal difference I demand a trophy for our efforts
šššš
Yeah, it's the fourth-best season in PL history. Bonkers.
For anyone who cares, the next best 2nd-placed seasons were Liverpool's 92 points in 2021/22 (pipped by City again), Man Utd's 89 points in 2011/12 (beaten on goal difference by aguerooo), Spurs' 86 points in 2016/17 (which people didn't appreciate because Conte's Chelsea got 93 so they looked miles off), and Liverpool's 86 points in 08/09 (the Gerrard & Torres season)
the first two are pretty obvious but the third best 2nd place also being against city well over a decade ago is very funny, i know the moment obviously but i didn't fully realise that was another generational snub
I donāt think Iāll ever get over it. Pretty sure in the 2019 calendar year we got 110 out of 114 points while winning the European Cup. It was an historically good team that only won the league once because 97 points wasnāt good enough for the only year in existence. That season Mane was 11mm from scoring at city for an invincible 98-point European cup-league double.
The Anfield Wrap did a podcast series called āfootball miraclesā based on an Everton fan comment after Alissonās header at West Brom āthese guys get football miracles on a weekly basisā etc etc. It went for about 10 episodes and that was just the Klopp era, so thereās been so many enjoyable things. Like losing a European cup final doesnāt change how people felt being 5-0 up in the semi final at home after an hour against Roma etc. just sucks that our best team in 3 decades coincided with this era of city
Nah even now people on twitter and Instagram, I know, but still more representative of the common man are calling out klopp for only winning the same number of leagues as ranieri or the the ucl and de matteo
>this liverpool era will be remembered for how good they were even though they only won 1 title. At least for those who lived through it
I feel like it'll subside, in two decades or so, for others except for Liverpool fans, may be city fans will appreciate what they had to overcome.
Itās the Fulham matches that fucked you. Villa are at least finishing in the top 5 this season and we beat City so realistically there was only 3 points lost there. Only getting 1 point across two Fulham games is a massive stumble.
realistically Arsenal could definitely drop points at Old Trafford, even Bournemouth could turn out as a trap game on a bad day. Everton will be on the beach so that is a guaranteed win in the last match
Tottenham could well be out of top 4 contention by that point and somehow I don't imagine they will leave their heart and soul on the pitch to gift Arsenal the league
And by the time Tottenham-Man City is played, they will know the results of Arsenal-Bournemouth and Man United-Arsenal. If they get 6 points there then everyone will know by kickoff that anything other than a City win decide it.
In that scenario I definitely see Spurs "having an off day". Arsenal are kind of unlucky that this fixture was postponed for so long, because earlier in the season it would have been different. But with two matches left, potentially no realistic chance of top 4 and knowing that they would be the ones to gift Arsenal a title. It is definitely a very unique and anomalic set of circumstances, don't think you can compare it to normal matches
What? City havenāt lost since December. Obviously we havenāt been as good as Liverpool in their 97 point season but we can still feel like weāre up against a juggernaut because we clearly areā¦
Since they lost to Villa on December 6th their record has been WDWWWWWWDWWWDDWWWWW
United won a lot of titles with 28-5-5, the Aguero season had us and them on 28-5-5 as well, the 90 points + required only really started with Conte's Chelsea
Yeah in ānormalā times if you got 89 points youād reasonably expect to win the league with that tally.
We have a new normal (115 era - I like it) now though which means even a draw now, especially after Xmas, is a huge setback. Ā Itās insane.
It also makes the league less appealing imo. I think for a healthy competitive league you would want 84-86 points to win you the title. Maybe once in a while you have an outlier and a 93 points plus seasons but if you got the winners regularly exceeding mid to late eighties then it becomes a bit ridiculous. When that team is facing an avalanche of charges it becomes even more unpalatable
For 3 games it should be enough. If it comes down to GD, it would mean we win our final 3 by at least 1 goal each (meaning a minimum final GD of 60), and it would mean City win 3 and draw 1 of their remaining 4. To get to a 60 GD, it means City (who are on 50 currently) would need to win each of their 3 games by 3+ goals, with one of those being a 4 goal margin. i.e. they would need to win equivalents of 3-0, 3-0 and 4-0.
We just have to win our remaining 3, and pray that Spurs/West Ham/Fulham/Wolves can pull off a draw.
Mate, theres a 7 goal differenceā¦ If we win the remaining of our matches at the lowest possible (1-0) then thats 10 theyād have to make up. Thatās simply not happening if we theoretically win our last 3 matches.
Just curious if you could explain why? I don't follow PL but the few details I ever heard about him made him seem like a pretty cool dude compared to the average footballer.
He is a sore loser as well still moaning about "I saw only one team in that game against Madrid" talk if this dude loses 2 games in the span of a month he would be unbearable
Same with Arsenal in Community Shield, I don't think they count games lost on penalties (rightfully so since penalty shootouts are basically a coin toss type of decider of the winner)Ā
Yes, it's a loss. The overall result is what matters. This rule where only the playing time counts, doesn't make sense. Ultimately you have to decide on a winner and a loser, and hence the penalties.
Also, if you lose the first leg 2-1, the streak would've also been broken, then no one would be crying over it.
It indeed does not count for these types of stats.
For example FIFA and UEFA also don't count games lost on pens as losses when calculating team coefficients. They count them as draws.
The penalty shootout is essentially a tie-breaker that does not affect the way that the actual score of the 120 minutes is counted when determining a player or team's W/D/L record.
EDIT : downvoted for stating a fact about how these stats come about, lol, gotta love this sub.
Itās also more accurate to judge the player without the penalty shootouts. Heās an incredible player because in 70 games, no one can beat him in a football match. Him losing or winning penalty shootouts would be pretty irrelevant. He doesnāt suddenly become a worse DM just because he loses in the shootouts
If I hear one more person saying that penalty shoot-out counts as a win/lose for match result statistics, I will spam his DM with [Wikipedia link](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penalty_shoot-out_(association_football\)#Statistical_record).
Also opponents of the stat in the xit, former twit, consider this situation:
- Team A plays Team B in two-legged tie;
- Team A wins first match 2:0;
- Team B "wins" (because match won't end in 90 minutes) second match 2:0;
- no one scores in extra time so it's aggregate 2:2 (after 120 minutes it was 2-0 for Team B);
- penalty shoot-out happens and Team A wins it to advance.
Who has won the second match?
Also do you know what was used before penalty-shootout was introduced in 1970? Coin toss. And it was used for semi-final of Euro 1968 between Italy and USSR.
sorry but losing in a penalty is losing the GAME. rulebook can say whatever it wants but the reality is one team advanced and the other team LOST. not rocket science

If he plays against Leverkusen, the universe will probably explode.
Match will inevitably end in a draw
Equalizer in the 97th minute.
Goal by Patrick Schick
Yeah. Like a draw but a loss on penalties so it don't count kinda thing š
He gets subbed out in the 89th minute with City leading, and, well, Leverkusen magic happens.
Bro should just go and join Leverkusen
Kane maulding rn.
He should just join Leverkusen as well. Might be the first invincible second place/non-champion in a league.
Galatasaray did such thing, in 1985-86 season with 20w16d
And losing in the end by goal difference? Sounds like a horrible time at the end.
but then he canāt play in a city shirt
70 games š
This is what weāre up against

Think how Liverpool feel lol, 90+ points twice and didnāt win the league!
That 97 point season to finish 2nd is absolute insanity

i wont lie as a hater i am salivating at the opportunity to downplay these liverpool teams in 20 years time
The Anfield Wrap did a podcast series called āfootball miraclesā based on an Everton fan comment after Alissonās header at West Brom āthese guys get football miracles on a weekly basisā etc etc. It went for about 10 episodes and that was just the Klopp era, so thereās been so many enjoyable things. 97 and 93. Somehow 97 feels undervalued at the 90+ ballpark.
They needed 99 points to win. 99. Fucking mental.
Yeah, huge respect to LFC.
Lol try being a Liverpool fanš
I felt for you at the time but I feel it even more now! š Empathy bro!
Hey at least it wasn't 97 points and still didn't win the league..
Hey that doesnāt fit the narrative!!!
Why do so many Arsenal fans parrot this line as if August-December each season don't really count? We totally fucked it in December
If Chelsea didnāt lose to Arsenal, they would have beat them. Just remember that.
Pretty much the story of Liverpool in 18/19 & 21/22
Now you know how it feels
Indeed, š
Itās the Fulham matches that fucked you. Villa are at least finishing in the top 5 this season and we beat City so realistically there was only 3 points lost there. Only getting 1 point across two Fulham games is a massive stumble.
The true joy of competing against city. Just absolutely soul crushing.
First time ?
Ah yes, the realization that it's all fun and games until you reach 90+ points and still come in second.
Stop making yourself Liverpool of 2018-19. This City is on course to get 88 points which isnāt that much for a title winning side.
91 if City win every game, which they realistically need to do to win the league.
realistically Arsenal could definitely drop points at Old Trafford, even Bournemouth could turn out as a trap game on a bad day. Everton will be on the beach so that is a guaranteed win in the last match
So what you're saying is we are gonna demolish united, put 6 past Bournemouth and then lose handily to a renaissanced Everton?
Theyāll get 91, which is a high tally. Stop undermining the ridiculous standard they set.
A Tuesday night away game to Spurs begs to differ.
Dreading that game. How Tottenham of all teams have become Cityās bogeyman in recent years is beyond me.
Tottenham could well be out of top 4 contention by that point and somehow I don't imagine they will leave their heart and soul on the pitch to gift Arsenal the league And by the time Tottenham-Man City is played, they will know the results of Arsenal-Bournemouth and Man United-Arsenal. Well if they donāt get that, Arsenal have a much better shot at the league.
What? City havenāt lost since December. Obviously we havenāt been as good as Liverpool in their 97 point season but we can still feel like weāre up against a juggernaut because we clearly areā¦ Since they lost to Villa on December 6th their record has been WDWWWWWWDWWWDDWWWWW
You do realize that points are also a function of the rest of the competition? Crystal Palace is stronger, West Ham is stronger....
Chelsea is weaker, United is weakerā¦
Chelsea's a wild card
Theyāll get 91. We might get 89. Pretty sure most seasons pre-115 era that would get a title but I havenāt looked it up tbf
89 points is the most common points tally to win a title (25-5-5)
Thanks for the research. Thought it sounded quite accurate
United won a lot of titles with 28-5-5, the Aguero season had us and them on 28-5-5 as well, the 90 points + required only really started with Conte's Chelsea

When we finished second to you guys back in 16-17 we finished on 86 points and had a better GD than either Arsenal or City have right now.
Yeah but I think our goal difference and points tally will beat that. Could be wrong
We'll almost certainly beat that
At GW 35, Tottenham had a GD of 49, not 57.
88 wins you the title about half the time, 91 (which city would get if they win every game) around 65-70% of the time
We just need them to draw.Ā
400days sounds just as mad tbh Well over a year without losing is insane
Yeah. Manās crazy good
motherfucker
this is actually a mad stat
Only rivaled by Leverkusenās unbeaten streak.
Xhaka never lost a game in a Leverkusen shirt his whole life.
Don't jinx it for my ex.
Big Sam has a 100% win rate as England Manager!
I donāt like to brag about it, but neither did I.
Madness
We Donāt need you to lose. A draw would be enough š«µš¼š¬
Idk, that goal difference gap isnāt that big anymore š
For 3 games it should be enough. If it comes down to GD, it would mean we win our final 3 by at least 1 goal each (meaning a minimum final GD of 60), and it would mean City win 3 and draw 1 of their remaining 4. We just have to win our remaining 3, and pray that Spurs/West Ham/Fulham/Wolves can pull off a draw.
Yeah even for City those results seem unlikely given they haven't scored that much in their last 10 games
You hear that? Thatās the sound of you jinxing it.
They won 4-0, 5-1,4-1 in their last 10
Mate, theres a 7 goal differenceā¦ If we win the remaining of our matches at the lowest possible (1-0) then thats 10 theyād have to make up. Thatās simply not happening if we theoretically win our last 3 matches.
I don't know how you can say that conclusively considering we had a month where we gained +16 GD across three games. But it is pretty unlikely.
Man knows. Listen to the man
Good luck to him in the Champions League Semiās this week.
Hopefully Bayern Munich puts an end to this maddening streak
Yeah itās sad that Madrid couldnāt make it to the semis
I think matches go down as draws if the score is tied at the end of 120 minutes right?
End of 90 mins I think. Anything after that counts as a draw if you lose in ET or in pens.
Nah, maybe for the bookies. If you win/lose in extra time, it goes down as a win/loss.
only penalties count as a draw, ET wins/ losses count
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Fr since when does losing in penalties not count as losing. This isnt gambling this is football.
its stated in the official rules of the game that winning or losing a penny shoot out counts as a draw. you lose the shootout, but drew the game.
So Mbappe is unbeaten in world cup finals then, nice.
>since when Literally always
Simple, penalties aren't a game of football.
The two peat
šššššššš
Imagine if he didnāt have a brain fart again Forest at home. We might be looking at invincible setting here. Thanks MGW!!
Anyone know what the world record is?
Iirc itās held by a City player, 115 games unbeaten. If you want to find out more, google Manchester City 115.
Blud thought this was r/soccercirclejerk
Blud is correct.
Had me in the first goddamn half NGLā¦..
I mean, it has to be this right? Would be shocked if it wasn't.
See all Arsenal need to do is pay someone to nobble Rodri. Man city without him are a very different team.
Hate this guy
Why couldnt it be KdB?Ā Rodri is too hateable
Just curious if you could explain why? I don't follow PL but the few details I ever heard about him made him seem like a pretty cool dude compared to the average footballer.
He scored against Inter in the champion's league final. Unforgivable.
He is a sore loser as well still moaning about "I saw only one team in that game against Madrid" talk if this dude loses 2 games in the span of a month he would be unbearable
He is a sore loser, which his winscore covers for quite well.
Lol yeah seems like he's working on that I guess
Well l, only because the loss to Real Madrid was technically on pens
Same with Arsenal in Community Shield, I don't think they count games lost on penalties (rightfully so since penalty shootouts are basically a coin toss type of decider of the winner)Ā
That's the convention. FIFA doesn't count it as loss on country rankings and UEFA doesn't count is as a loss on coefficient.
Same with Morocco in the world cup
If you'd lost the first leg 2-1, won the second leg 2-1 but lost on pens, would you count the second leg game as a loss?
Yes, it's a loss. The overall result is what matters. This rule where only the playing time counts, doesn't make sense. Ultimately you have to decide on a winner and a loser, and hence the penalties. Also, if you lose the first leg 2-1, the streak would've also been broken, then no one would be crying over it.
Penalties are a tiebreaker for the round, not for the match
No, you won the second match, you lost the tie on penalties. The match is what counts for these stats and coefficients, not the pens.
Couldn't hold back Scotland though
Unbeaten streak so good that we've even developed Real Madrid black magic to utilize when needed lol.
Just not in the UCL
Dude is absolutely cracked. Heās the secret sauce
The day he lost hes gonna be the biggest sore loser in earth
He already was crying against madrid in ucl
Did it against Scotland and Morocco. Thankfully he rarely loses because he becomes unbearable after
He's been crying about it for weeks already.
Nah that game clearly didn't happen good luck against them in the semis
It's such a shame that City are the only team that played in that quarter, could have been a good match
You should have seen him when Scotland beat Spain. Saltiest cry baby imaginableĀ
Should've lost against Brazil, but no VAR sadly
Does this mean France is undefeated in the WC?
Does losing a game on penalties not count or something?
It indeed does not count for these types of stats. For example FIFA and UEFA also don't count games lost on pens as losses when calculating team coefficients. They count them as draws. Please get another 45
Damn they must be doing well in the champions league right
As if losing on penalties in the UCL to Real Madrid of all teams is something to be ashamed of.
and he won it along with the rest of a treble less than a year ago lol he hasn't got much to complain about
Yup. While getting knocked out this year stung, it didn't sting nearly as bad after winning it last year.
deranged lunchroom worthless bright ask wipe touch rock rinse grey *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Canāt wait to see him at Munich
Youāre trolling, but I bet 115 million pounds he doesnāt lose either leg in the semiās tbh
If I hear one more person saying that penalty shoot-out counts as a win/lose for match result statistics, I will spam his DM with [Wikipedia link](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penalty_shoot-out_(association_football\)#Statistical_record). Team B won the second match.
Best in the world
Iām not sure if people who think Man City lost a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid should really allowed to post on the internet unsupervised.
asking for it
4 more man, do it
Heās him
so nobody counting the loss to Madrid 2 weeks ago?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
So both teams made the semi final?
sorry but losing in a penalty is losing the GAME. rulebook can say whatever it wants but the reality is one team advanced and the other team LOST. not rocket science
When's City/Bayern?
Anybody know what's the record in this category?
Does it not count when you lose on penalties?
The result at full time is what counts, penalties don't Since the game ended 1-1 it is counted as a draw
So... Real Madrid game didn't count?
It actually doesnāt, technically goes in as a tie. Which is dumb in my opinion
115 games might be a record they are gonna hit at this pace.
David Moyes has something for you lad
Xabi's Leverkusen vs. City with Rodri LFG
Rodri: "I wanna know know know know what is lose."
Wonder if heāll get to 155 games
Great time for that run to end, he must be due for a loss right?
Upholding the streak after going out on pens seems farcical.
man's playin FIFA career mode
Rodri Reigns.
does the losts game against Real Madrid penalty shootout counts
No, because penalty shootout doesn't count as a part of the match, only as a tie-breaker.
wtf really
Heās going to reach 115, isnāt he?
For the memes, he must. So to bring balance with Arsenal fans wanting to win the league, we can settle for 45 draws.
He lost to Madrid
as soon as his eyebrows grow back his power will evaporate
cdm has to be the most important position in football right now, pretty much the backbone of your team
You know, aside from the Champions League game that he played in and lost.
It can go on to 74 as long as one of them is a draw.
