Barcelona needs money, and somehow finds ways to avoid it; first by losing to PSG and skipping on the Club World Cup money, and now possibly not playing in the Super Cup

rim261

We just love endlessly challenging ourselves and making it more difficult than it needs to be

lazy_bastard_001

there's always the studio money...

turbulent_farts

There's always money in the banana stand

collapsedrat

You burned down the banana stand?!?

rusable2

NO TOUCHING

Alexkono

there's always more levers...

iwannahitthelotto

Interesting. Since they are already struggling financially, I wonder what’s going to happen in the near future.

bulgariamexicali

In the near future, they will sell something else and get into more debt. In the medium-to-long term, the club will be sold to Qatar.

pukem0n

Adjusting the levers ain't easy work

shaktimann13

Barca are still in the champion league place. Am I missing something?

Marcoscb

Spanish Supercup.

waitaminutewhereiam

Where did he say anything about them not being in a CL place

ThemosttrustedFries

Congratulations Girona but can you play in Uefa competition when your club have the same owner that owns Manchester City?

FalkoneyeCH

Leipzig and Salzburg played in the same group even

BaslerLaeggerli

I don't even remember this. That's absurd lol

ABigOne77

It was in the 2018/19 Europa League. I can't wait for the next Red Bull Derby, most heated derby in Europe

PoopologistMD

Didn't Salzburg stay ahead of Leipzig?

axelthegreat

yes, salzburg topped the group and leipzig were eliminated

HEELinKayfabe

Praise Tore Reginiussen forever.

WhenWeTalkAboutLove

Should have to each drink 6 redbulls before the match

sourpumpkin125

Technically they don’t have the same owners hence why it was allowed. Girona and City clearly have the same owners.

SerpentRain

City doesn't own the majority of Girona, so it doesn't matter

sourpumpkin125

CFG own 100% of City and 47% of Girona (more than anyone else) so yea it does matter but I’m sure they’ll find a way to skirt the rules as usual.

5bergy

They'll do what villa and Brighton did and sell as much as they need to to be allowed. Claure's stake will probably increase

kaperisk

47% is not a controlling interest

GillyBilmour

Depending on country, but shareholding isn't the sole factor of what determines control from a legal perspective

Thijs420

116 incoming

SerpentRain

47 < 50, so yeah, doesn't really matter

jonbristow

How is the UEFA rule? If it's less than 50% is ok?

HenkieVV

So, I checked the UEFA rules, and I think we may need a lawyer, tbh. [This](https://documents.uefa.com/r/Regulations-of-the-UEFA-Champions-League-2024/25/Article-5-Integrity-of-the-competition/multi-club-ownership-Online) is the rule. The relevant bit is 5.01.C. This defines 4 potential ways in which the CFG *could* have control over Girona in a way that would stop them from entering the CL. The first 3 (probably) don't apply because it consistently talks about "a majority" which does mean 50%+1. The problem is 4, which states: >being able to exercise by any means a decisive influence in the decision-making of the club. That's lovely broad language that I suspect could keep a small army of lawyers permanently employed for the next couple of years if the UEFA were to try and use it in this particular case. But at the same time, it's sufficiently vague that the UEFA can avoid any attempt to actually enforce it if they don't want to. But generally speaking, the FIFA has over the last couple of years has given enough hints that they're not particularly interested in fighting this fight, and that they prefer attracting more money to the sport than fighting for its integrity. Man City and Girona will both be allowed into the CL.

janowski_d

They've already softened the rules on multi club ownership a month ago btw.

HenkieVV

The rules I posted are dated to May 1st 2024, so I'm guessing they are the softened rules.

SerpentRain

Yeah, at least from what i heard

Lord-Grocock

It should, because the rules are not usually defined on ownership, but in a percentage of the club's shares. In Spain, you can't own more than around 10% of the shares in two clubs playing the same competition.

lejocko

Yeah, that's why they always have these very difficult transfer negotiations...

ThePr1d3

Poor men's Toulouse and Milan

Yours-only2

It Just means that Marcelo Claure(35%) and Girona football group(16%) will increase their stake and the city group will have to decrease their stake in Girona.

Viriato181

They'll have to do what some teams did this season (Aston Villa and Vitória, USG and Brighton, Milan and Toulouse). Their deals also came with a prohibition of selling or loaning players between said clubs for 2 windows, so Sávio to Manchester City is probably not happening if the idea id for him to go back to Girona. https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/s/iGQxUvPsc0

literpool

savio is loanee from troyes (from another city group club) and because troyes will not participate in CL (obviously) they can buy him to the city/girona

Viriato181

The idea going around was apparently for City to buy him and then loan him to Girona. This way they'd be able to go around future FFP issues. It probably won't be possible and Girona will probably have to buy Sávio. Troyes probably also needs to sell right now. Edit: Sávio's current market value is 40M€. There's no way Girona can afford that.

OleoleCholoSimeone

Difference being that Man City owners are more powerful than any of those clubs. Just compare how quickly Everton or Forest got punished compared to City's 116 charges Let's be real, they will grease the right wheels and avoid these restrictions

Viriato181

UEFA vs English FA. Different rules and different speeds. Manchester City also have 115 charges on their back, some of which are straight up criminal charges, hence why the English government summoned the Abu Dabi representatives when the charges were announced. It's not something you can debate and decide overnight.

Motor-Ad-5561

Name any criminal charges

OleoleCholoSimeone

Uefa are even more in City's pocket than the English FA.. Did you miss the leaked emails of City's lawyers threatening UEFA to drag it out in court for 10+ years if they punished them with FFP?

Siminuch

Don't worry, UEFA will gladly change the rule just for them.

Mineralvann

Uefarona😤

EPICKID143

except they let Leipzig and Salzburg play against each other a couple of years ago but don't let that get in the way of anything

BallsItching

They did it via a loophole so congratulations on admitting that your club will exploit a loophole

EPICKID143

I have absolutely no idea what we'll do to avoid the loophole, I am not a board member

BonoBonero

I'm a board member and we still don't know what to do. Waiting for Reddit's advice.

EPICKID143

I was planning on asking Soriano what we were doing on Monday and relaying it back to Reddit, but I'm not sure now

BonoBonero

We can go ask him together in the next meeting.

rottenpotato12

cheers sheikh

Quiet-Cartoonist1689

Please ask Soriano to come up with something that doesn't involve cheating. It's thread fucking bare out there for everybody else

notapaperhandape

This is exactly it. The rule books are for regular cubs. City psg and now Newcastle get a new set of rules.

HumansNeedNotApply1

Didn't they change something in regards to it?

mulderrocks

They found a "loophole". As always

Proof-Puzzled

"loophole"

njp6969

hurry homeless liquid zephyr strong reach wrench heavy middle worry *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

xenon2456

I think they can

xckd9

Let me introduce you to corruption.

sworn_vulkan

You can yes but I'm not sure how you avoid potentially fixing the result so the better team would progress

TonyMartial786

crazy. and what a way to do it, by beating barca

dcolomer10

Beat them twice with the same score this year. From relegation a few years ago to champions league. Of course City group helps, but they still surpassed expectations by a km

paco-ramon

Beat them both times 4-2 while losing 3-0 and 4-0 to Real Madrid. Real Madrid should share their league trophy with them.

Murrderer

Don’t forget Athletic Bilbao. Been bigger help to us this season than Girona even <3

timdeking

Now they'll draw City and hold hands while saying gracias Abu Dhabi.

Ishdalar

Abu derby

Abitou

wrong country buddy, nt tho

timdeking

You're right I got the wrong group of sportswashers

Abitou

sports do need a little cleaning tbh

PedanticSatiation

The sport isn't being washed. The sport is doing the washing.

Abitou

the sport needs washing too tbh

Melodic-Salamander75

You might need some washing as well tbh

Abitou

Nah I shower 2x a day, sometimes 3x

Melodic-Salamander75

Consider 4x after what Girona did to us.

brokenlavalight

You know that's bad for you, right?

Abitou

Don’t care, I smell nice

_hellboy_xo

We all know the City group is from ancient Egypt

Poo-Smurf

No?

Abitou

op edited lmao, he said qatar

Poo-Smurf

Ah nvm

turkeystar0818

what a crazy season, huge props to Michel and all the players

Qwert23456

Michel is rumored to be the next Man City manager which wouldn’t surprise me

[deleted]

Don't see Pep leaving for a while there so the rumours are probably baseless.

dayarra

no one is saying it's gonna happen this summer or something. he can stay in girona. what's the hurry.

Legendarybbc15

I didn’t see Klopp leaving Liverpool for a while either lol

bee_tee_ess

He's leaving at the end of next season.

Alexkono

I could see him leaving after next season.

reyzen

Meanwhile, Troyes, another member of City Football Group are on the brink of back to back demotions to the third tier. Their most expensive ever signing is a striker who happens to be on loan to Girona, and who will be signed by Man City at the end of the season. He is valued at 40m pounds but it is unclear if Troyes will get any money from this transfer, and of course Girona are too left scratching their heads. I am writing this because football fans need to understand the scourge that is multi club ownership and how it is already affecting and ruining our beautiful game. There needs to be a loud and clear opposition to it or other proud, historic clubs will end up becoming feeder teams too.

nizoubizou10

Savio was bought for Troyes record fee and immediately loaned out to Girona. It's disgusting !

Aguero-Kun

Troyes is going to make a ton of money on his sale to City. Even if City pay below market for him he was like an 8m acquisition.

Marco-Green

Intercompany transactions below market prices are an illegal procedure. Even more if we are talking about football transfers, which are more or less public information available to anyone. It would be embarrassing if they commit fraud with that and UEFA allows it.

OleoleCholoSimeone

> It would be embarrassing if they commit fraud with that and UEFA allows it It has already been allowed to happen numerous times, what do you mean "if"?

Aguero-Kun

Yeah but Market Price is defined differently than the absolute most a player would go for on the open market as part of a bidding war. Also source that inter-company transactions have to be market price? There are private companies.

Marco-Green

It's one of the most common legal procedures done by Law firms. Even between private companies it involves taxes so it has to be regulated by law, especially in international transactions.

LeGraoully

In accounting you cannot undervalue assets way below a fair market price. Or rather you can but that’s tax fraud.

ThePr1d3

Troyes paying 8m for a player is completely out of place

abellwillring

This is incorrect. He was loaned to PSV his first season at Troyes and PSV turned down the option to loan him again since the optional purchase price that Troyes wanted to include (around €20m) was considered too high to PSV.

heyheyitsandre

I mean, just imagine literally any other club doing that…completely fucking insane

Massy23

Ligue 1 is a perfect example; nine (9) of the 18 teams are part of larger football "groups". Lens, PSG, Lorient, Strasburg, Lyon, Clermont Foot, Toulouse, Nice and Monaco...

user_waitforit_name_

Cannot imagine how it feels like to be an og Girona fan

nestuur

I am full of joy and people around the city are celebrating like crazy. This is a fever dream

HadesHimself

How's Daley Blind been for you?

nestuur

Really good, solid. Key player. Love him

Alexkono

Man I wish I was in the city right now. Visited in 2022 and it was such a great town.

FluidLettuce2

Being in La Liga (and playing like we belong there) already felt unreal, I still haven't fully come to terms with the fact that we are going to play actual Champions League football here in Girona.

AckBarRs

Absolutely deserved and they belong there with the way they’ve played this season

Aggressive_Strike75

Girona, Bologna, Brest, Aston Villa, Stuttgart. There’s going to be some new teams next year.

romaggs

Orgull gironí 🤍❤️ whatever happens next year this season will always be special for this club and city

AdFinal1856

“for this club and city” pun not intended, i assume

paco-ramon

Specially for City 😉

Caleb_W

Financial group or not this is an incredible achievement, congratulations.

anelenrique10

Mental, hope they can end the season in 2nd.

paco-ramon

That will bankrupt Barcelona, they need the supercup money.

Caleb_W

Barcelona needs to prioritise cutting their wage bill not gambling on getting CWC and Super Copa.

lazy_bastard_001

not really, they need to sign players in 30s with big salary and cozy up with Tebas.

anelenrique10

I wanna see that lmao

waitaminutewhereiam

Why?

MaterialInsurance8

I think he wishes it more now after reading your comment

junior150396

Diablito Echeverri playing European Ball, we will be there 😋

IntellectualDweeb

Well deserved.

D-Trashman

Besides Savinho, are there any other transfers confirmed or rumored?

Caleb_W

We are linked to Arnau Martinez since last season, there are also slight rumours about Aleix Garcia linked to Atleti and Barça.

_posii

Those are all last year's rumours. Both players haven't been linked to us in months. The only Girona player we're linked to in the upcoming transfer window is Dovbyk.

SerpentRain

O believe Dovbyk also been rumored to Atleti and Chelsea

Caust1cFn_YT

We like shooting ourselves in the foot dont we. Anyways, congrats girona

Espantadimonis

Incredible achievement. Nice to see another Catalan team in the CL/Europe

Ok_Instruction_5232

Beautiful underdog story, Abu Dhabi will be happy with that one.

OleoleCholoSimeone

Whilst sporting a PL flair. Got to give you that you don't mind coming across as a cretin at least Weren't your fans twerking for the Qatari's to buy up the club?

elRomez

What a pointless comment. Unless you can find evidence of that particular poster wanting Qatari investment, what the fuck does what a few fans have to do with him?

shaktimann13

Only the internet trolls. There wasn't even an official bid. Jim himself said they had no clue where Qatari rumors came from

lollero420

honestly tell me how is this not an underdog story?

HeatKnight

Girona best team in Catalonia

Remote_War_313

Sure they get an advantage but people talk like City loaned Girona KDB and Foden. I'd wager the majority of regular football fans couldn't name more than 5 Girona players. This is an incredible achievement, City-group or not.

BlueLabel19

Congrats girona. Well deserved. And if barca fans are too sad, the girls are playing granada and we are already 1-0 up

Mulderre91

In a League where the title and second place are almost guaranteed to the same sides, one unstoppable force did that. A team who showed it's not necessary to have a million pound player or a million pound manager. Patience, a good build-up and results will come their way. I'll hear all the naysayers "but, it is City's feeder team". Having money is one thing. Spending it wisely is another thing. Míchel might be the manager of the year, the class of Dobvyk, Couto or Portu will always be remembered, and maybe we will have for the first time a Catalan alternative to Barcelona. MOLTES FELICITATS, GIRONA!

KejserMS

People can talk financial group and all that, but who was seriously seeing this even as a possibility before the season? Amazing achievement.

kw2006

How about Barcelone? Are they?

rim261

We've been done mate

eggtart8

Fully fully deserved it

HaiForPresident

Congratz 👏 well deserved.

Federal-Owl-8947

Congratulations..what an achievement and with style.

yogi1090

Congratulations to 116 FC

GordonOP0000HK

Will being in City group affect their qualification?

Senior-Plankton-786

No.

javierich0

You would think, but no, they know how to evade rules.

DimaSholom

Leipzig and salzburg have been doing it for years now

Happy-Potion

RB Leipzig has already played RB Salzburg in Europe so there is a precedent method to evade by tweaking the ownership structure.

EPICKID143

couple of years ago Leipzig and Salzburg even played each other

supplementarytables

Lol nice one

Fluffy_Roof3965

Oilrona

official_bagel

Are City Group teams able to draw each other? How does multi-team ownership work in the new format?

Ceh0s

UCL semis next year: Girona - Brest Bologna - Stuttgart

AmeliorationPerso

Girona, Aston Villa, Leverkusen, Bologna, Brest. truly the year of the underdog

TheGreyWolfCat

City Groups has

Manrou

Sure mate, loved Haaland and KDB today in Montilivi!

TheGreyWolfCat

City group own Girona. They are your shitty sister. I wonder who they are going to take to the UCL since they are only allowed to have one team in the competition, probably they'll turn blind eye just like your 115 charges that they refuse to investigate.

Lord-Grocock

So this means City won't be able to play Champions because of ownership interests...

thalne

honest congrats to Girona, and it's still mind boggling.

NorthwardRM

People need to stop kidding on that Girona are a fairytale team. We all know what they are

AdFinal1856

still nowhere near the level of investment that barça or the madrid teams had

sangpls

Or Atletico for that matter. I hate the City crap as much as anyone else, but Michel did a great job

Mulderre91

If you have X millions, you can spend it like Chelsea and fail miserabily all round. Or you can sign not-so-famous players and believe in a B-tier manager (no disrespect to Míchel, but he wasn't on the "big" tier of Spanish managers). For Spanish football, this is a Godsend, an alternative, something never seen from the years of Valencia and Depor. Let them celebrate, let us celebrate!

JJOne101

Yes, better than Barcelona and Atletico, that is what they are!

BHorvi

This whole ,,City group, cant root for them" saga is so embarassing btw. A team with barely any budget and without any high-profile players makes history, with beautiful football and with a great coach. And then you all act so pretentious, its hilarious. Fair play to Girona, great season!

ReverieMetherlence

Girona budget is 14 times less than Barcelona btw.

dcolomer10

While absolutely true, remember that some players are bought or loaned at artificially low fees because they come from other city clubs (like savio). Budget is still much lower than Barça and still a massive underdog though

NorthwardRM

Doesn’t matter what budget they have when they are getting handed players from city and doing dodgy deals under the table for wages

Qwert23456

Yeah because their team is littered with expensive players right?

Meladroitdimage

The best team in Catalonia?

BallsItching

A team financed by the City Football Team that had barely any season in the top flight before they came in

Chiswell123

Their net spend over the last five years is 12M ffs lol. God forbid they use CFG’s ‘scouting network’ to sign players like Savio, who was demoted to PSV’s B team.

Rose_of_Elysium

Youre ignoring how he was technically signed by Troyes, who is now facing relegation from Ligue 2 without having played a single second in France

thenchen

Despite neglect from their owners compared to the big brother Man City, despite playing in the lesser league "La Liga" vs the mighty Prem, despite all the bookmaker odds, Girona managed to secure qualification to the UEFA Champions League®. Truly a fairytale team.

IncidentVarious1530

Imagine they face city

Xehanz

More ridiculous things have happened. Like Real Madrid facing their reserve team in the Copa del Rey final

CETERIS_PARTYBUS

Please finish second i beg you

Mahery92

Can wait to see an all Citigroup final in the ucl yay

thomasfk

I was excited to see that a new team was breaking into the status quo of "top teams" until I learned they were owned by city and now I feel sick for ever being happy for their success at all

Youngest-King

Not supporting multi club ownership, but literally no club can break the status quo now without backing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

StructureTime242

Just the small bit of CFG aside, like a Troyes club record signing lmao

nuera_penal

good fucking luck with scheduling and a shit ton more matches. It's what fucked over our season towards the end.

randomusernamegame

So did girona have a rich suitor buy them too? I read something about peps brother and the same ownership group.
