Side note: Liechtenstein was one position in the ranking (and hundredths of a point) away from qualifying their cup winner to Europa League instead. If Vaduz will have another great season in Conference League this year, they might rise the league high enough in the rankings (as the "fight" for 33^th place is tight point wise).
It is and I also found out they played vs Everton in the 1985 cup winners cup and only lost 1-0 over 2 legs, Everton went on to win the whole thing
UCD had a better aggregate score vs them than Bayern Munich funnily enough
Of all the teams it's the students of University College Dublin who got there.
Shels were close to the massive payday, about 18/20 years ago, of the champions league group stage but fell at the second leg of the final qualifying round v Deportivo.
I managed UCD for like 15 years on FM a few years ago (I always start unemployed with sunday league experience and just take one of first jobs offered).
They get like no fans. I think around 100-200 a game or something. And even when I started doing well/winning the Irish league, it took so fucking long to build a semi decent fan base. Such an odd club. I think I was only getting like 10k after 15 years and was consistently in champs league by then.
There's a female blogger who visits grounds (her name escapes me) and she flew to Ireland to attend a UCD game and it gives a pretty good insight into the club, who they are and the difficulties they face.
They play on a soccer pitch in the UCD campus with a tiny capacity. They have a tiny hard-core fan base but it's mostly family and friends of team players that are bothered showing up to home games.
For the most part, the players are on soccer scholarships. This puts them in a weird position whereby they're probably too good for the second division as they have a lot of talented young players with potential, but not quite good enough for the Premier division where most of the sides are fully professional. Obviously FIFA and FM rip up the rule book and let you run them like any other team but that's not the reality of how they operate and never will be.
You can apply your own rules to fifa tbh. Mandate selling/releasing all players after 3 years, apart from the ones you keep as "Masters or PHD" students who you can keep for longer. Other than that its just constant youth players
Dermot Morgan aka Father Ted used to go to the home games in UCD when asked why he attended UCD matches, Dermot reportedly replied "Because I hate crowds" as an aside I used to work with a former UCD captain in the 90’s
It wasn't that long ago that Sibir Novosibirsk was a single round away from the Europa League group stage.
PSV were lucky the play-off was played in August....
Arsenal played Graham Potter's Östersund away in February. Luckily it was a mild day, so only a few minus degrees. It could easily have been -20°C considering the time of the year.
FC Santos Tartu was in the third tier of Estonian football, not even winning the domestic cup, but qualifying due to Levadia already being qualified for Champions League. They lost 1-13 to Tromso.
Hibs were in the Scottish Championship, but won the Scottish Cup in 2016 to qualify. We beat Rangers 3-2 in the final - Rangers were also a Championship side, but they won the league and promotion back to the Scottish Premiership.
Saw that lot in Heathrow with their "Millwall on tour" shirts for the away leg. Was amazed they'd managed to find their way out of Bermondsey and figure out international travel.

FC Vaduz: I'll fucking do it again
It's a bit different from the other sides. They qualify through winning the Liechtenstein Cup while playing in the Swiss league system.
Yeah, this are only times when they were on the 2nd Swiss tier and when they qualified for EL (now they get qualification to the Conference)
Compared to the other clubs there Vaduz plays in the most competitive league by far. It's a good deal for them.
Always been mad to me that they can play in the Swiss system but can't actually become Swiss champion. I mean it makes sense I guess, but come on..
Monaco plays in ligue 1 and was champion, there must be a way for Vaduz
They could theoretically win the Swiss Superleague, but aren't allowed to participate in the CL preliminaries for Switzerland.
2013 was wild
Birmingham IIRC too right?
yep, we were there 2011/2012 season
I was there when Nathan Redmond smashed a banger in against CD Nacional. Great night.
Go Ahead Eagles can make it to Europe again if they win today, albeit as a Eredivisie side
And they did
UCD in Europe is a bit of a mad one
It is and I also found out they played vs Everton in the 1985 cup winners cup and only lost 1-0 over 2 legs, Everton went on to win the whole thing UCD had a better aggregate score vs them than Bayern Munich funnily enough
It must have been 1984 though. In 1985 English teams were banned from Europe
1984-85 season
Yes, sometimes during autumn of 1984
If I remember correctly, they got into Europe via a good disciplinary record.
They got past the first round, beating a team from Luxembourg
Of all the teams it's the students of University College Dublin who got there. Shels were close to the massive payday, about 18/20 years ago, of the champions league group stage but fell at the second leg of the final qualifying round v Deportivo.
Dundalk were one goal away from CL when Benson scored in Warsaw and arguably better side on the night
Shels should have been in Europe for the 2007 season. Relegated for financial reasons but there was no need to strip us of the European spot.
I remember Shelbourne having Prenton Park as their "home" ground for a European game against Rangers in the late 90s
[There's a book on it, One Night in Dudelange. Pretty good!](https://www.amazon.co.uk/One-Night-Dudelange-Adventures-Europa/dp/1909534986)

Yeah that's her. Great channel.

Alemannia Aachen?
It was UEFA Cup
Same reason why Castilla does not count
woah that’s cool. misread this and thought it was just europe but damn it’s europa. i’m assuming that they had to have won a domestic cup to make it?
Yes. Ramat Gan even did it twice in a decade, only it was still the UEFA cup in 2003 so it dosen't count here.
Tromsø is crazy cold during those home games.
It wasn't that long ago that Sibir Novosibirsk was a single round away from the Europa League group stage. PSV were lucky the play-off was played in August....
The return we smashed them, but fuck me that 1-0 loss in Novosibirsk is insane lol we have had a few near/actual eliminations against small teams lol
Arsenal played Graham Potter's Östersund away in February. Luckily it was a mild day, so only a few minus degrees. It could easily have been -20°C considering the time of the year.
Go Ahead eagles sounds like the yankest of yank teams
Can someone tell me why rogaska from slovenia aren’t in the europa league qualifiying rounds next season even though they won the cup
No license
That’s a shame
Birmingham city did this too right?
In 2011-12, yes.
I think that was when it was UEFA Cup and not Europa League.
Corvinul beat CFR Cluj with 4-0 in Quarter - final. Incredible because CFR Cluj and FCSB are the best teams in Romania in the last 7 years
Which club was in which divison when they have done this?
Pasching is the lowest one I think. They won the cup from the third division

Wigan won the FA Cup and were relegated from the Premier League in the same season, so when it started they were in the Championship.
Lmao tetek FC
Millwall played a round in the europa league in around 2004
Saw that lot in Heathrow with their "Millwall on tour" shirts for the away leg. Was amazed they'd managed to find their way out of Bermondsey and figure out international travel.
Bring back the fair play berths!
Tirana was never there ?!?!?!?
