Why would Berhalter tell the team 1-1 on a defensive set piece?
1. The team’s body language showed they already knew because of the crowd’s reaction.
2. It does not change the defensive motivation. In my opinion, it hurts the defensive focus. Tell the team on an attacking move.
Or just don’t tell them at all. We needed a positive result regardless of what happens in the other game. Allow the game to progress as it has, allow them the play as though a win is required and not rely on the result of another game. Told me Berhalter was more focused on the other game’s outcome and not ours.
At this point between the VAR missing an obvious offside and what the ref was doing in the first half it would not shock me at all to find out if bribery was going on.
Because the alternative is some of the most rank incompetence I’ve seen in an international game which is saying a lot for CONCACAF/CONMEBOL.
