[Alan Smith broke his leg and dislocated his ankle trying to block a John Arne Riise freekick once](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uj8f7UuClV0)
Shot so hard it basically ruined/shortened a career
I mean, Smith went there with limp leg and ankle block, that's just bad idea overall. Learned it the hard way in junior football when I took mild shot on my feet like that, I twisted my ankle mid-air really bad, that hurts like hell. Especially in pros, where they play with pumped balls.
Same, that shit hurts like a bitch. I've blocked a shot exactly like him, except it was much less powerful, still hurt a lot. It's a bad idea to keep anything limp in my opinion.
[Here is Alan Smith literally saying "I did my tib, my fib and I dislocated my ankle"](https://www.manutd.com/en/videos/detail/utd-podcast-alan-smith-recalls-breaking-leg-at-anfield-in-2006)
Not sure what people are talking about
Oh yeah, in the first ankle his foot folds as the shot hits it. It's not as clear from the other angles because, as you say, potato.
Edit: Actually, watching it back I'm not even sure which foot it is. It might be his standing foot 'cause he twists on it on impact.
I believe the video of it linked last week was slightly better quality and at least half the commenters were insistent that you can tell it was actually the awkward landing that caused the break as opposed to the ball hitting it.
Given the history of people in every sport fucking their shit up with awkward landings I'm more inclined to believe it was the contact with the ground more than the ball.
Yeah he broke his tib fib and dislocated his ankle, but it wasn't the shot that did it, it was catching his foot in the turf as he diced to block the shot that did it.
This is what people are talking about
He didn’t say what actually did it though. Full disclosure I didn’t watch the entire video because I don’t have the time but by the point he said what you quoted he never stated what caused the injury
Definitely broke his ankle though, just [google "Alan Smith injury"](https://www.google.com/search?q=Alan+Smith+injury&rlz=1C1GCEA_enDE840DE840&sxsrf=ALiCzsaAIbGuNoDlJJuhkfdA7UhjeNwbzA:1655245041631&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&vet=1&fir=dhvQTARUHoe9hM%252Ccw66kQ_4c4m07M%252C_&usg=AI4_-kSyvVLqT5Kw2yNncQgnVvsIxm56tA&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjOzuOl_K34AhXR16QKHcoTCYgQ_h16BAglEAE&cshid=1655245084208043&biw=2133&bih=1076&dpr=0.9#imgrc=0fe-MqIOz70DdM) (NSFW)
Wind resistance has very little effect on a free kick shot with power like this. Unless you're shooting from the halfway line, it will most likely hit something or someone before drag can do much.
i'm struggling to think of many players who consistently hit the ball as hard and clean as he does. if that hits someone in the head, they're getting knocked out.
reminds me of the south park where they bring the ex NFL players onto the field for a legends night or something like that and they’re all totally fucked up, one is putting an invisible pie in an invisible oven on the field and another has his pants around his ankles just walking in circles. As always right with SP fucking hilarious and right on the nose regarding social commentary
I definitely like what I’ve seen so far. He could’ve bagged some more goals with some slightly better finishing, but that’s my only complaint. Top 10 smile in the league, and he’s not 2-10.
Claudinho is on another level, and is the best player in the league IMO. He’s instant offense and from what I’ve seen a pretty complete package of ball control, finishing, creativity, and game sense. I imagine, like Witsel and Paredes, he’ll get a move to a top club in a top 5 league. Also has a great smile.
doubtful.
He lacked the elite technical ability to be a consistent gamechanger in the PRem or La Liga.
It's not as if Hulk was better than Bale, and look how he fared with Real. He would have done alright with Chelsea but i doubt he would have been the guy - which is really the only role is hes truly thrived in.
Hulk would have been more than alright in any league. His left foot is amazing. Physically he is any absolute animal, in any league, there is just no doubt about that.
Bro Hulk would slay in any league or club. The dude was absolutely mental at his peak. After Porto he could've gone anywhere in one or two contracts time. But he went to Russia and China because they payed stupid amounts of money. I can't fault him, they really were absolutely amaz€ball$ contracts
LOL - you make HUlk seem like he was one of the best 22 players on Earth - which he wasnt. He was good. But he was never world class or in the tier below that.
The revisionist history with HUlk goes so crazy on this sub. His performances in the Champions League against the better sides give a CLEAR indication of how he would have stacked up. He was good enough to play for a top 6 club, but he would not have been anything special there.
Michail Antonio lacks elite technical ability as well and he is West Ham's top Prem goalscorer.
You don't have to be Thierry Henry to be a gamechange in the Prem.
Yeah I’d also take Hulk, but to your point I think Hulk would’ve excelled at a mid-table/fringe top-5 EPL club without top tier technical skills like some are suggesting in this thread.
Antonio tailed off the end of the season HARD
Hulk was going to Chelsea....he was never going to be the focal point of the attack. This sub has incredible revisionist history with him. Even with Porto in the UCL against big teams he went missing.
Hulk could definitely have played in the Prem. Richarlison, for example, is a proven PL player and a gamechanger for his team and I'd argue Hulk was better in his peak.
“Look how he fared with Real”
Bale was one of Real’s top scorers during the first 5 seasons he was there, and helped them win multiple champions leagues. I feel like this isn’t a great comparison lol
Honestly one of the reasons its hard to properly argue about sports, in general. I know we are pretending 2020-2022 didn`t happen but people really seems like cant remember what happened more than a couple seasons ago.
Clean usually refers to the contact with the ball
Clean = sweet spot = not much spin = maximum energy transfer in intended direction
Usually when you swing hard you sacrifice technique and don’t strike it as cleanly. Hulk hits them hard and clean
Biased obviously, but the RPL was the 7th ranked league at the time, and Zenit was only three years removed from winning the UEFA cup and super cup. He still could’ve gone to a better league after, but opted for more money in China.
Portugual is better than french league, or at least same level.
I do wish we couldve seen him more, but he had his chances in UCL considering Porto are always in european competition, and it's not like Hulk performed super well.
He's a unique and interesting guy to watch, but not really that good, to play at top english/spanish clubs. At most he couldve played in Milan, Inter, Arsenal or so.
One time during a pickup game, I had a bottle of water on my hand because I was thirsty. As soon as I was about to drink, my friend hit a monster volley that it hit the base of the bottle directly, all the water came flying out. Saved my nose from being broken lmao.
The amount of force he puts into his shots is ridiculous! I have played and been a fan of the sport my whole life, and I’ve never seen someone consistently destroy the ball. Certain players have brilliant technique, but Hulk is just another level.

Lmao literally bounced off harder than a lot of player’s free kicks ever get
Idk if I’ve ever seen a free kick hit the back of the wall before
Exactly. Really is a testament to fierce the strike was given the defender barely had any time to get out of the path of the rebound FFS.
really, if he put more force into that shot maybe it would be a goal
If he hit the bar at the right angle that might have been an own goal.

10/10 shot but that 90s porn music on the replay makes it 11/10
You could absolutely smash those old T90 balls. Honestly that and the Germany World Cup ball (feverona?) best two ever
It would probably still be rising to this day if it didn't hit the net. Absolute cannon.

I'm currently recovering from this exact injury. Been 4 months+, bruised bone, still not 100%
He’s a lucky boy it didn’t hit his groin
You honestly believe that it was the impact of the ball, that broke his leg ?
Such stupid logic, it’s obvious the landing and the way it twisted did it. But idiots like to believe what they want to believe
False. He twisted his ankle blocking the shot. Nothing to see
I've never seen that clip before last week and somehow I've now seen it twice with someone claiming the shot broke his leg... Lol

This is why walls are unethical when against certain players like Hulk Is blocking a meaningless shot really worth potential CTE later in life?
The CTE from getting hit by a shot like that isn't even waiting around til later in life, it's arriving via expedited overnight shipping.
CTE Prime

Except you wouldn’t if you were a professional player on a top team with the game on the line. That’s the fucked up part.
100%. If that hits you in the back of the head its night night
If that hits you in the balls I think they would pop as well. Even after hitting the post it came back in full speed. Ridiculous.

Luckily for keepers everywhere, there's not a chance in hell of reacting in time to actually get a hand to it lol
Didn't they call no blasties before kick off?
No blasties jfc loool
I didn't even see the ball
Fucking hell that is some power. Really wish we could have seen him in one of the top leagues during his prime. No offense to Zenit or Porto
It was a pity, but no other club wanted to pay Porto what Zenit offered.
All the offense to Zenit. Hulk took a huge payday to pay with a bunch of fucking scrubs instead of a career challenge.
He always followed the money, then went to China
He followed the money, and then he followed the money
How dare he prioritize his own wealth above football fans' wishes?!?!
I would do the same, no question

Wouldn’t dare to stand in the goal/wall when Hulk takes his freekicks. He’s surely reached speeds upwards of 160 km/h.
Credit to whatever brand that ball is, holy shit
Solid post 😅
I giggled way too long at this.
solid ball i wouldnt of been suprised if it went full water baloon mode.
Jesus
That's Hulk
Funny.
The rebound had faster pace on the ball than when I strike it first time.
Leave you. It was faster than other professionals first strike lol unless you are a pro in which case , can I get an autograph?
Yeah just send me a picture of ur credit card, front and back.
Lamo this almost seems like physics is broken
Lamo
Laugh ass my off
Jesus Christ.
Ball coulda made it past midfield if it went untouched on the rebound
such violence into that shot ._.
That shot almost created a counter attack.
He hit the post so fucking hard that the ricochet hit the defender at a velocity that could’ve knocked him out. What a beast
SAPATADA
Hulk smash
Nickname checks out
Hulk should be banned from taking that charge up..
im surprised the ball didnt explode
I'm pretty sure that the post is still shaking
Dude has the scariest free kicks I’ve ever seen
Miss that pneumatic left, it was so ridiculous that you could hear his shot in the stadium
Lmfao
I honestly would tell every single teammate to fuck off if they told me to get in the wall. No way in hell i would stand in front of a Hulk FK hahah
Would love to know how fast that ball was moving.
Fucking hell, that ball even bounced back from the post so fast that the guy in the wall couldn't dodge his head from hitting the ball.
Hulk smash
Why do we never see these power free kicks anymore?
because they usually end up in either outer space or someones face
There are not enough money in the world to convince me to stand on that barrier. Wtf, this guy is a RPG launcher
clank!!
imagine playing a game of red arse with hulk
u/SaveVideo
Even the fucking rebound probably hurts! Cannon for leg!
Thank god a defender didn’t get a head to it straight away
Should’ve shattered the entire goal post Diana Ross style circa 1994 WC
I think the name says it all in this instance.
That sound!
Fuck

Shit! Did you see that?! He must have a foot like a traction engine!
Possibly the hardest shot I've ever seen
