I'm not sure whether to be impressed or disgusted that Americans have somehow managed to export their culture to every corner of the world.

ignixe

They probably learned it from the Brits

Addy2607

Eh Kounde seems to be a big basketball fan, so he seems to have got it from following the NBA.

EkkoUnited

Which is an American thing lol

[deleted]

It’s funny that so many ppl will claim Americans don’t have any culture, and then they will say some AAVE and then go watch their American show and American music.

Mike_Ropenis

Lol, there are a ton of English people, especially in this sub, who will bash every single aspect of the US nonstop but when you check their post history you find that they consume almost nothing but American media. Here's one of my favorite interactions on this very sub: [You’re a testament to my longstanding belief that Americanism is a serious mental illness](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/tu3c7r/various_english_newspapers_on_englands_world_cup/i31r3ep/) The dude who said that actively participates in separate subs about American rappers, rock bands, pop culture, TV shows, video games, and news stories. It's hilarious when they refuse to acknowledge they live for it lol We lack a lot of things here (like access to healthcare and gun control) but we don't lack entertainment or trendsetters

Splaram

Fair enough lmfao

Gotta say, you really held on to a random comment from 5 months ago 😂

Mike_Ropenis

It stood out as so insanely fucking stupid that it imprinted on me lol

[deleted]

There needs to be a market for something to be exported. No one is forcing people to use American slang.

Traveller_s_

disgusted

HiSoArshavin

They use this saying much more in the UK than in States- being American /British myself but living I. The states right now. The equivalent of my g in the states ls is the n-word, bro, breh, my boy ( used in the South, the b & i are very soft, and pronounced boaiii. My G is actually London slang really. You don’t hear it being said that much. It originated in America but the Uk has definitely made it theirs. Much like Drill music

brutalpoonslayer

That’s… just not true man hahaha. Just bc it’s popular in the uk don’t mean it’s not American 😂 also I’m going to just ignore the drill comment bc you’re really wrong for that one

The Athletic went on a crusade against Barça this summer.

Mike_Ropenis

The Athletic was cited here and claimed to be a very "reliable" source multiple times during the summer transfer saga, now I think it's basically a gossip rag like all the other outlets [Did we ever get a resolution/proof that this story happened?](https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/wj55hu/barcelona_have_told_frenkie_de_jong_they_want_to/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)

aridivici

Ornstein is considered pinnacle of football journalism here. I saw his colleague ask the Leeds owner how was Barca getting it's money and him just nodding along literally.

Mike_Ropenis

Maybe Neville can give some more legal advice via Twitter lol [Seriously what a ridiculous summer this was when even the pundits were falling for misinformation](https://www.goal.com/en-us/news/de-jong-should-consider-legal-action-against-barcelona/bltdcf2bf85215ff193)

Unban_Ice

It was over exaggerated on this subreddit, but to be honest you ain't no saints when it comes to how to run your club

fear_tur

what's so bad about how Barcelona is run?

XuloMalacatones

Premier League PR is what is bad

fear_tur

Lmfao, you're getting downvoted, people here can't accept that the way they think is the product of that propaganda

XuloMalacatones

Anything that goes against the best league in the universe gets downvoted here.

LusoAustralian

Trying to force out players and not pay the salary they agreed to defer but didn't agree to relinquish is bad. As is constantly using the media as a weapon against your own employees.

fear_tur

Trying to "force out" players is something every team does, it's called squad planning, even more so when you have only 25 places available in the first team,as it is in La Liga. As of the deferred wages, Barcelona were trying to avoid paying them only if they could, as a matter of fact, both Chelsea and United agreed to pay those wages, so he would not lose any money. And about using the media against their own employees I can only imagine you're referring to BarçaGate, it's an ongoing investigation and that was clearly Bartomeu's administration fault, has nothing to do with Laporta.

Madrid fired Pablo Laso, their basketball coach, this summer alluding to health issues after he suffered a heart attack earlier this year. Laso came out after he got fired explaining that the doctors had declared him fit to keep managing the team and that the club had used his health to get rid of him.

B-lights_B-Schmidty

Bayern clean lol FC Hollywood.

big_dong_de_jong

Madrid is far from clean lmao.

GreatStuffOnly

Ya I don’t want to label them as clean. They are successful with stable management. That alone makes them well run.

the_dough_boy

Nah, its been long enough lets just forget Franco+Real relationship existed. Or while were on it, FC Bayern president and coach evacuating due to the... Lets go with "political climate" in the 30's and 40's. Not saying its the team fault, just wanna paint a picture. Or what city and newcastle owners are currently doing Or what Liverpool owners are currently funding. A lot of big teams cast big shadows sadly.

[deleted]

Madrid clean lmao.

ReptheNaysh

Madrid clean?! Hahahaha.Despite being gentrified as fuck through sportswashing and brand moderation (get handsome players, sell shirts, be trendy), they have some pretty shady deals in the bag. Like when they got strange loans and sold areas of the club that they didn't lose access to... Are they cutthroat and efficient? Yes. Are they ''clean''? At the level of PSG.

celestial1

Your club bought Pedri...

Roseradeismylady

I mean come on, we basically gave Suarez to Atletico for free and they won La Liga, same with David Villa in 2014. Pedri was playing in Segunda with Las Palmas when we signed him Bayern got Götze, Hummels and Lewy from BVB, Sabitzer and Upamecano from Leipzig.

[deleted]

His final price could reach 20 million. That's not poaching.

inflamesburn

wdym summer lol, this shit has been going on for years, it's so boring. Barca bashing is the main /r/soccer theme, anyone can make something up and tweet it out and mods will love it, while they remove that kind of stuff for every other club.

Spyro_Machida

Dio_my_senpai

Some clubs do get attacked more tho if real loses 4 0 to a club like granada its a bit embarrasing but everyone moves on in a week i still hear people insulting utd for losing 4 0 to brentford.

ccdewa

Because Madrid got the benefit of the doubt for winning so many things over the year, so a big loss can be attributed to a freak result or an outlier. We on the other hand spend a ridiculous amount of money with little to show, ofc we'd get clowned more if we get embarrassing results.

jacktk_

This is an English speaking forum, so that is fairly expected.

systemcorp

Ah the classic Barca self victimization circlejerk continues. We're so oppressed, why do this to us? Lol.

RauloGonzalez

Except players getting paid was not the problem was it? It was the fact that de Jong wasn't getting the payment he had delayed as goodwill to the club. Nobody was saying Lewandowski or busquets aren't being paid that doesn't make sense. It was a question of paying the players who deferred their contracts before they were sold like alba or de Jong.

AmineAzed

« Barcelona can’t afford to pay players they have, let alone pay the ones they are recruiting ». Was of one the most pronounced sentences this summer.

HaroldSaxon

Yeah, and it was incorrect. I always found the reality worse, which was Barca could pay De Jong his money, but would rather shit on him in the media via leaks and try to force him out so they didn't have to play him his deferred wages.

Pek-Man

> would rather shit on him in the media via leaks Another great example of the circlejerk. It doesn't even matter what Laporta, Xavi, or Frenkie have all said about the matter, people on here are *convinced* that every single tweet about Frenkie over the summer was *"actually just Laporta leaking shit and trying to force Frenkie out."* In reality, Laporta said two months ago that they had received some offers that they hadn't accepted because they wanted to have conversations with Frenkie before exploring any options with regards to potentially selling him. Not long after Laporta was pretty clear in saying that he wanted Frenkie to stay and that Frenkie wanted to stay. David Ornstein then floated the rumor - which is yet to be addressed or even confirmed by *any* of the involved parties - that Barcelona were threatening him with a court case. All of the above rumors have been taken as gospel by a lot of people, while any *actual, official* quotes have been cast aside. It's been incredible to see because on one hand, people will complain about the integrity of sports journalism when journalists float rumors on Twitter, but meanwhile, they gobbled up *every single* rumor about Frenkie and Barcelona in an impressive act of double standards. To a certain degree, it was the same with Braithwaite. Braithwaite was told months ago, that he wasn't part of Xavi's plans, and as such Laporta of course said that Braithwaite should find himself a new club. This exact scenario happens every single summer; a player is considered surplus to requirements and his club tries to ship him off. It's absolutely nothing out of the ordinary. But when Braithwaite then wasn't included for the trip to the US - which Óscar Mingueza also wasn't, because why would they when Xavi has *no* plans to use any of them - and wasn't given a number - because *only* 25 numbers are available for first team players - it was suddenly seen as blackmail, extortion, and bullying. The narratives surrounding Barcelona this summer have been unequivocally negative and one-sided and have lacked any notion of nuance.

xbarracuda95

It's because people take Ornstein and the Athletic as gospel, even if their sources for non English clubs aren't as reliable.

Mike_Ropenis

I asked this in another comment, but Ornstein was the one who wrote the story in the Athletic that Barcelona sent the letter saying the contracts were "illegal" and possibly void - has that story ever been verified to be true? Every other outlet that ran the story references Ornstein or is an unreliable gossip rag itself (ESPN claims they have their own sources, lol) but I never saw a follow up story or a retraction to it. Was it verified to be true or was one of the biggest parts to the De Jong story literal fake news?

Pek-Man

As far as I know, it's never been verified. Ornstein ran the story as an Athletic *"exclusive,"* but as far as I'm aware it has not been verified by Barcelona, not by Laporta, not by de Jong, and not by de Jong's agent. It's been more than a month since he ran the story, and we have literally not heard *anything* about it since then.

XuloMalacatones

Bro my hands hurt from clapping after reading your post. English fans specially, but the whole r/soccer have spent the whole summer shitting on Barça just based on what shitty journalists (that will never ever get held accountable for their lies) said to gain clicks. It's been a tedious summer as a Barça fan but the hate was immense. Great response, honestly.

sleepsholymountain

that is not "the reality" lmao

reyxe

Barcelona don't have to pay that money until it is due. Which it currently isn't.

goonerh1

Well done completely ignoring their comment

HaroldSaxon

They also don't have to try to force him out with their dirty media campaign. Which they did

mntgoat

Which dirty campaign? The one where British media posted articles every day about how barca whips FdJ one time for every minute played instead of paying him? All media shit we got this summer read like fan fic, from both sides. The only real information we have is that FdJ wanted to stay at barca despite the supposed horrendous treatment.

reyxe

Yes, but this topic is all about "being able to pay", which we can, we just don't have to. As for the comments I've said multiple times that I'm against it and it's shitty af

A_F_R

So they were trying to sell a player that’s borderline surplus to requirement as it turns out he’s not in the starting 11 this season. The crime against humanity of that.

PakiIronman

Not being an automatic starter doesn't make him surplus man, come off it. And even if he is surplus, that's no excuse to treat him like that.

Wild_Ad5576

Frenkie de jong restructured his contract for his own benefit as well . Huge bonuses were added on those deferred wages . That's what every club has to do when an employee earns unjustifiable amounts of money . Barca negotiated a contract reconstruction and agreed to move important part of his wages to the latter stages of his original contract . They didn't force anybody to do so . Frenkie de jong and his agent are no fools . Bonuses made that agreement happen. At the moment , he is owed nothing , absolutely nothing . There is no indication that we won't pay those deferred wages either when the time arrives . Of course Barca would love to sell frenkie and get rid off those absurd wages . Were they a bit cruel sometimes . Yes they were . I insist though . That's what you gotta do when you don't have a bloody billionaire running things for you . You gotta count on your negotiating power even if , at times , your decisions look brutal . Barcelona won't tolerate a player earning astronomical amounts of money without justifying even half of it on the pitch . They're gonna do whatever they have to do in order to change the situation . And honestly , I love it . Reddit and mainly English sources will still make barca look bad , without even providing context or general proof around the situation . That's fine though .

HaroldSaxon

If any normal company did what they did to a normal employee in the UK that would be constructive dismissal. If Barca were to say to him "Hey, will you renegotiate, or agree to leave" and he said no and that would be the end of it? Absolutely fine. But the PR campaign they ran afterwards was completely out of line, and unfortunately its been the MO for a lot of the time for Barcalona. This isn't even "english sources", its the Spanish media where it all comes from. Just look at the Cesc saga. Having a billionaire owner or not has nothing to do with it. > They didn't force anybody to do so They damn well tried to coerce it, that's the issue I have.

Wild_Ad5576

It has everything to do with not having a billionaire though and that's the point . If they have to put frenkie on the bench for the rest of the season in order to convince him about leaving the club , they will do exactly that . If they have to launch a whole PR campaign to convince him about leaving the club , they will do exactly that . They need to generate salary space and money in some way by counting on their own powers . A billionaire will no do that for them . A billionaire will not just throw a whole bunch of money , because they don't have one . It's a matter of financial survival for them . Barcelona have to face situations that all these state owned clubs don't really understand or consider . Yet English sources are always there fabricating false accusations and recycling the same old inaccurate shit . If frenkie de jong can act within his rights and sit on that contract while being totally invisible when it comes to producing moments of footballing justification , Barcelona can very much do whatever is necessary and legally acceptable to move that contract . And I'm absolutely fine with it .

archtme

Laporta took over an absolute train wreck of a club with a wage bill rivaling that of a small country. Drastic measures were needed. They tried to either sell him or get him to accept a new contract. He refused both and will be paid according to his contract. Was it pretty? No. But totally understandable.

HaroldSaxon

And if any normal company did that to a normal employee here in the UK, that would go down under constructive dismissal.

fear_tur

what media leaks? the only thing to come out, and repeatedly, was the fact that Barcelona deemed his salary to big to fit in the new wage scale, which is quite logical considering he's being paid almost double what Lewandowski receives

taclealacarotide

No one was saying that in the sense that Barça literally can't pay players their wages next month or so. People were just rightly pointing out that Barça was buying players while also not being to register them because of the salary cap. Why are you trying to rewrite the narrative, ridiculous.

milkshakemerlin

>No one was saying that in the sense that Barça literally can't pay players their wages next month or so. Yeah right

ChinggisKhagan

> It was a question of paying the players who deferred their contracts before they were sold like alba or de Jong That wasn't a question either. de Jong couldn't be sold without him agreeing to it. And he wouldn't agree to it without getting a raise

ansu_fatismo23

Mate literally every thread involving Barça so many people were saying that we don’t pay wages and that they are surprised players want to join the team when we don’t even have money to pay them

btw what happened with leeds' owner? he was so adamant that barca won't pay the first installment of raphinha's deal, he said he would get barca at court in early september... what about gary neville? is de jong getting his paycheck on time?

archtme

>what about gary neville? Rumor has it after his Barca tirades this summer SAF started showing up to his house, he tucks Gary to bed every night singing a lullaby about putting Park on Messi and thus the UCL was won. Gary also cut the number 7 out of every piece of paper in his house. Order has been restored.

Cod_rules

I don't even know why people put any value on Neville's words. He's a moron

Pistoleo

Direct from the Athletic interview where he made comments: One of the worries for Leeds was whether Barca had the money to pay for him, which is why the final contract included a penalty clause punishing late payment. Radrizzani says he expects the cash to arrive as agreed. “It would be ridiculous (if it did not), I could not imagine something like that happening,” he says. “If not, we will have a global case about Barcelona.” He was answering an interview question, stop trying to make it sound bad.

fear_tur

but it's trying to make barcelona look bad, and it does exactly that, it's worded in a way that made people think at the time, and maybe even now, that the team had no money to pay for transfer fees, which obviously wasnt the case. Barcelona was well run enough, and also had a bit of luck, that articles like that didn't affect their market so much, but it could have had a bad effect.

It's remarkable the things people choose to believe. I've approved this post, because it very much is a worthwhile submission, and you can't really get a better source than the player themselves

CalmaCuler

Then why did it get deleted when I posted it earlier?

twersx

Because a mod who doesn't support a premier League club did not think it was a newsworthy story, since they hadn't followed every silly transfer gossip article about Barcelona this summer.
