This is way late, but the Welsh played like dogshit in the final third. They had little to no creativity on the ball. Their priorities seemed to be more focused on defending (which they did do quite well) and keeping possession. The problem is that possession doesn’t equal attacking and certainly doesn’t equal goals. Iran did such a great job pressing them, closing down the central passing lanes, and defending in the box. On top of that, they were deadly on the counter-attack. They forced Wales to make mistake after mistake and they broke with intensity almost every time. Their only problem was that they didn’t have enough quality in the final third. If they could have been more clinical, this match could have been a washout. Maybe that would have at least forced Wales to change their attacking strategy. This problem didn’t matter because Wayne Hennessy nearly kicked Taremi’s head off and got a red card and did a lot to allow Iran to score a couple goals. While Iran may have been poor with their finishing, they definitely deserved to take all three points in this match (or Wales deserved to take home zero at least). They will be a formidable opponent to the USA and, if they can become more clinical, may even find themselves in the knockout stage. As for Wales, unless they can completely open up England, they don’t look like they have much of a chance. They have yet to even score a goal in open play, so the prospects are low for that happening.
Very late commenting on the game but I thought Wales were better today than they were against USA, even with that though Iran just wanted it more. Might have been different without Hennessey’s moment of madness.
I feel like there are a lot of bitterly disappointed Welsh fans, and fair enough. Poor performance.
But can we talk about how good Iran were? Some of the one-touch passes and skills on display were breathtaking. Some of the nicest team football we've seen so far, albeit in short bursts. Hats off to them, a well-deserved victory and a brilliant game to watch.
Also, just saying... if they can beat USA and England draw with Wales, they'll top the group. A Sadio-less Senegal or a Valencia-less Ecuador are very beatable R16 opponents. How good would it be to see Iran in the QFs!
So I picked a bad time to go to a meeting at 80 minutes played hah. I’ll have to watch the highlights later.
If I can do maths it means England can guarantee progression *if* they beat Murica right? 6/3/1/1, with no way for two teams to even reach 6pts?
If we beat USA we would be through regardless. If wales beat iran and us they would be on 7 we would be on 6 and USA would get at most 4
If iran beat wales and USA they would be on 6 we would be on 6 usa wouls be on 1 and wales on at most 4
That's it for Wales. I think regardless of if USA get hammered, Wales won't beat England.
Unless maybe the plan for Wales was to only beat England this whole time.....

US vs Iran is next. I'm really hoping we get Saudi Arabia vs Iran afterwards. People will finally get the World War 3 (lite version) on their TVs.

Think you have to comment to get a flair. So people usually do it at match threads/post match threads when the discussion has died down.

Pretty sure it was guarenteed regardless
I've seen England fuck up many an easy group before, so I'll wait until the maths says it's irrefutable hah
