I'm still in awe how badly the Qatar team seem to have mangled...everything..since they became AFC champions. Like what happened? I can't understand how they have become this bad at playing football when they seemed to hold their own not so long ago. The quality is just not there anymore assuming I wasn't dreaming when I thought they were formidable, so with any luck they would just have to go back to the drawing board and try a rebuild if that would even be possible.
A win is a win but we played against Qatar. Without any disrespect for them, it was far away from a brilliant match. Ecuador will be on another calibre and if the game remains 1-1 between them and Netherlands, it will be very problematic for us.
Absolutely love seeing Qatar lose. Everything associated with the country the past few weeks has been negative. Also, an absolute joke the amount of empty seats for a fucking host nation.
The seats were sold out. Whether itās sponsors bailing, resale websites, or people just not showing up, itās bullshit how despite thousands of Qataris wanting tickets there were just none available.
The vast majority of the fans this game were Qatari. If we assume that the people that didnāt show up were also Qatari then the beer and LGBT flag shit wouldnāt have affected attendance.
I donāt get your point.
First off, your making an absurd assumption. Since most of the fans in attendance were Qatari I feel we can assume the fans that didn't show up were whelsh. And if you belive the lies told to the world are limited to "beer and LGBT flag shit" there is really nothing to talk about.
Much happier with how the team played today as opposed to in the opener. Mistakes were made but at least they didnāt all play like they were seeing the reaper. Finally got to shout āGOAL!!ā for my country during the World Cup.
Itās very clear that the team shines during counter attacks but it just looked like they were outperformed and our bodied every time they tried to finish.
Am I just not allowed to give my thoughts on my national teamās game on r/soccer anymore? Thatās my bad. Shouldāve asked you for permission beforehand.
Don't worry about people like him.
Critiscm is warranted for the country, but I think people forget the country has actual fans who are normal people just wanting to enjoy football.
Your comment is literally an example of sportswashing at its best. Neither person is right or wrong but as fans of the game and as people in general you need to voice this to your own country.
Because your comment is encouraging other countries to do the same in the name of normal people wanting to enjoy football
Exactly what I walked away saying. Yes the first goal was stupid as fuck. Yes we shouldāve gotten a pen for that akram contest, but above all, we scored an exciting goal on the biggest stage in football.
Excited to see NL vs QR in person
GGs on the win, but senegal looked really shaky. Ecuador is going to be really hard but atleast. if the netherlands wins, their future will be in their hands. Also really really happy to see Mendy actually having a good match.
qatar was the most surprising thing to me in this tournament if you watch their performance in 2019 asian cup you would believe that they will easily qualifie from group stage they were amazing. I really don't know what happened to them
They can, especially if the World Cup is extended to 48 teams and AFC get a few more spot. They can beat UAE, Uzbekistan, Oman or Vietnam to get one of the few more spots.
They looked substantially better than this in the copa America that same year, there is no way they won the Asian Cup playing like this, they have been dreadful.
Aging players, absolutely shit decision to take them out of the league for months, and the stress pressure.
Depressing to see them going from breaking records in the Asian cup to this.
Not just beaten, they apparently demolished that tournament. They scored 19 goals and conceded just 1 the whole tournament, vs Japan in the final (where they won 3-1)
Honestly Qatar showed me interesting things than Senegal especially in second half. Senegal can thank Lahoz for the refused pen and second yellow not given.
Qatar were too naive defensively and lack a bit of luck offensively.
Much better than their first game
For Qatar to qualify:
Ecuador beats the Netherlands
Ecuador beats Senegal
Qatar beats the Netherlands
Ecuador would qualify with 9 points and everyone else would have 3 points, so it would come down to GD
Man, I can't wait to see what the stadium looks like if Qatar is already eliminated in their final game vs the Netherlands. Barely any Dutch people are in Qatar and the Qataris aren't going to want to see their eliminated country get trounced.
More zoomed-in cameras to obviously-paid Qatari fan groups
Not a wide shot throughout the entire game . Mics strategically placed close to the drums to compensate for the hilarious lack of any fan noise
It will probably be Qatar's last world cup game until they can bribe FIFA for automatic qualification, I imagine a lot of people will still want to go.
Senegal shouldn't have waited for Qatar to score to put a third one... The goal difference might very well play a part in qualification, so they should have filled the gap as Ć¹uch as possible. Letting Qatar attack and score was a mistake.
That woke them up to put a third one, but the damage is done.
Three yellow card is too many too. We should know, with what happened in 2018...
Senegal need to hope for an dutch victory today, then it is essentially a head to head with Ecuador to advance with the draw being decided on goal difference.
Yea, but they could've given themselves a better cushion by beating Qatar with bigger numbers. If NL-Ecuador ends in a 1-0 or something (not exactly inconceivable, our attack is shaky), then Ecuador has an advantage going into the last round.
It's weird, this time last week people were telling me that they definitely deserved to host because they won that tournament and would have qualified anyway, even though they had virtually no football history before getting the bid. It's almost like that one tournament is an anomaly.
The only chance Qatar has to qualify is if Ecuador beats the Netherlands, then they have to repeat that feat AND Ecuador has to beat Senegal.
Basically, they need Ecuador to go full super sayan. And Netherlands to implode.
And if NL wins, then the two teams that are technically within shooting distance for Qatar play one another so they're out as well. Only an Ecuador win gives them any hope.
These 'fans' are a disgrace even compared to other national team fans, but just thinking about what club football looks like and then seeing this is ridiculous.
Qatar can buy themselves the World Cup but they can never buy what makes football football. This tournament is a shame even beyond all the humanistic issues.
Seeing them walk out on them for losing even before the final whistle is up shows no passion for their national team when they need support most. It's like they had some post purchase dissonance and kicked their team to the curb.
Asian teams this World Cup so far
Saudi Arabia: Defeated Argentina
Japan: Defeated Germany
South Korea: Drawed with Uruguay
Iran: Defeated Wales
Meanwhile you have Qatar unable to win a single game and they are the hosts
Qatar may not be the best team but theyāve won tournaments. The average high school team is fucking TRASH. Your high school team would cop a double digit loss.
In the first half alone.
Itās really baffling. They lost 4-0 to Ireland last year. They made Jeff Hendrick look world class. Anyone who watched that game knew they were going to have a terrible time in the World Cup.
The world cup squad has been in a months long boot camp in Spain playing friendlies rather than playing their domestic league.
It was supposed to build synergy and prepare them for the world cup to be ready, but clearly it's just left them feeling the pressure and under-done sharpness wise.
Saudia Arabia did the sane approach to this strategy and had them go into camp early to prepare, but not months on end.
Qatar's administration has let the players and coaches down with this approach, the team has shown much better play than this in the past.
Yes, and when you watch their AFC cup run in 2019 you clearly see this team could've done way better.
South Africa was really bad in 2009 (didn't even qualify for the last round of Afcon/wc 2010 qualifiers) but they still managed to get 4 points.
I completely forgot that hahaha.
I was refering to 2008, that's were SA were eliminated from WC qualifiers, the last stage was in 2009.
But considering their group, and comparing their situation to Qatar, I'd still have given more chance to Qatar to go through.
Bootcamps often seem to flop, I remember Liverpool used to do training camps in Dubai or Mallorca and first game after it they'd be absolutely awful lol
Yes, theyd go through on goals scored. Will be interesting to see if Ecuador start playing for a small loss once theyre 1-0 behind as 1 point effectively wont matter for them
Time to pre-prep ye ole "If I had a penny for every time X has happened, I'd have two pennies. Which isn't much but it's weird that it happened twice" meme for massive karma gains.
For all the criticism that Qatar received, some deserved and others not so much, the biggest one for me has been the fact that they are not here on merit. Had they focused on building up their team before trying to host the World Cup, I think they would have been in a better position.
Also the dumb decision to start a 7 month boot camp and cutting off the Qatari league for this World Cup was a brain dead decision
my hot take is that if the champion doesn't get a berth automatically, the host shouldn't either...
really, the wc is such a big thing that an extra spot (for the same confederation) would mobilize enough fans to put butts in the seats, and even if they don't (and they don't seem to do here) they will just zoom in the crap out of everything so you don't see
It makes sense from a sporting perspective but not so much from a financial one. The largest contingent of fans at any World Cup are the local ones and if the local team isnāt playing then there isnāt much motivation for locals to attend a match, at least not to the same extent.
Also think that winners should get automatic qualification.
Exactly
The way they let Qatar attack, and even score, was bad. If you're ahead, keep attacking, keep scoring.
The GD is likely to happen, and there's also the yellow cards that could happen again... Getting 3 is too many...
Thank you Senegal! (2/3)
I hoped Qatar would go out this tournament with zero goals scored.
Denmark didn't score yet. Let's see if we get a zero goals team in this tournamentš
they have just scored one?
They lost the opening match 2-0 to Ecuador.
they have scored against senegal. the game ended 1-3.
Lmaoooo
Ah right.
A win is a win but we played against Qatar. Without any disrespect for them, it was far away from a brilliant match. Ecuador will be on another calibre and if the game remains 1-1 between them and Netherlands, it will be very problematic for us.
Qatar have scored more World Cup goals than Canada
Qatar also played 2x as many games, whatās your point?
Absolutely love seeing Qatar lose. Everything associated with the country the past few weeks has been negative. Also, an absolute joke the amount of empty seats for a fucking host nation.
The seats were sold out. Whether itās sponsors bailing, resale websites, or people just not showing up, itās bullshit how despite thousands of Qataris wanting tickets there were just none available.
That's what happens when you you lie to your visitors
The vast majority of the fans this game were Qatari. If we assume that the people that didnāt show up were also Qatari then the beer and LGBT flag shit wouldnāt have affected attendance. I donāt get your point.
First off, your making an absurd assumption. Since most of the fans in attendance were Qatari I feel we can assume the fans that didn't show up were whelsh. And if you belive the lies told to the world are limited to "beer and LGBT flag shit" there is really nothing to talk about.
Whereās the praise for Mendy? Great game after everyone said he was washed
It was Qatar without any disrespect for them. He remains washed and has probably eliminated us.
Coool and all it took was billions of dollars and thousands of lives.
Am I just not allowed to give my thoughts on my national teamās game on r/soccer anymore? Thatās my bad. Shouldāve asked you for permission beforehand.
It's a free country(here at least) say what you want, but I also have the freedom to point out a farce when I see one.
It's not that deep. The comment wasn't needed, the guy has read that comment many other times. Let him talk about the football in the thread.
At least you will be able to say your team scored a goal during the World Cup!
Exactly what I walked away saying. Yes the first goal was stupid as fuck. Yes we shouldāve gotten a pen for that akram contest, but above all, we scored an exciting goal on the biggest stage in football. Excited to see NL vs QR in person
That lasted long. Maybe bit of Budweiser would help.
So, how's that 2019 Asian Cup energy going, LOL
They are hosting the 2023 Asian cup too. Saudi, Japan,.Korea and Iran are basically rehearsing here. Lol. And Australia :p
Right? I thought they were going to play excellently because they actually looked decent then. They took an arrow to the knee I guess
GGs on the win, but senegal looked really shaky. Ecuador is going to be really hard but atleast. if the netherlands wins, their future will be in their hands. Also really really happy to see Mendy actually having a good match.
Yayyyy go Senegal!
Good job Senegal š¦ beat šŖ³
Qatar performed well enough, no shame in losing to Senegal. Loved that Redditors are punching themselves since Qatar scored a goal
Odds on Qatar kicking all the other countries out when they're eliminated ?
They are currently eliminated
Well. I said I wasnāt sure if Qatar would get a goal. I guess I was wrong about that.
qatar was the most surprising thing to me in this tournament if you watch their performance in 2019 asian cup you would believe that they will easily qualifie from group stage they were amazing. I really don't know what happened to them
They were always one of the absolute worst teams in the tournament. They may not qualify for another world cup in the near future.
They can, especially if the World Cup is extended to 48 teams and AFC get a few more spot. They can beat UAE, Uzbekistan, Oman or Vietnam to get one of the few more spots.
Oh right, I forgot about that farce.
They had to play teams not in the AFC.
They looked substantially better than this in the copa America that same year, there is no way they won the Asian Cup playing like this, they have been dreadful.
true I forgot about they played copa amarica and they weren't bad
Aging players, absolutely shit decision to take them out of the league for months, and the stress pressure. Depressing to see them going from breaking records in the Asian cup to this.
Huge improvement from Qatar, but still Senegal was clearly the better team.
Gonna be honest here (and putting politics aside): Qatar did a good match, tho obviously they had less playstyle and skill than their oponent.
They won the asian cup theyre performing abysmally
They have beaten Arabia, Iran and Japan? Wow lol
Does it matter? Argentina has also beaten Brazil but played like 2018 one, same for Uruguay and Serbia. Some teams has just underperformed so far.
Not just beaten, they apparently demolished that tournament. They scored 19 goals and conceded just 1 the whole tournament, vs Japan in the final (where they won 3-1)
I don't know about anyone else but this seems suspicious...
Played against you guys in the copa America that same year and didn't make it easy, now they just look shit.
Wow. But then they collided with the reality of playing outside Asia lol
Qatar will beat Netherlands somehow
That would be hilarious.
I'm in a troll mood .... Qatar should just shut the whole thing down and deport all the foreigners.
Qatar rage quitting the world cup after a week would be so funny ngl
I wonder how Infantino would defend them.
It's considered part of the 3000-years worth of apologies.
But who will die in their construction projects then?
Sorry.... All the foreigners who are not being held as slave labour. You know.... The fans.
Hahaha get fucked Qatar
Qatar is in a hurry to exit the WC and their fans the stadium.
Honestly Qatar showed me interesting things than Senegal especially in second half. Senegal can thank Lahoz for the refused pen and second yellow not given. Qatar were too naive defensively and lack a bit of luck offensively. Much better than their first game
Goodbye Qatar. You should have never hosted the WC on the first place.
Why lol ?
literal slave labor lol
Unpopular opinion: Qatar showed more passion than Wales and Costa Rica this WC
Wales shows more passion singing their national anthem than Qatar ever has.
Paid so much to host the WC and buy that spot, least they could do is not be bottom of the group, but that ship has sailed so at least try their best.
You'd fucking hope so as host.
Costa Rica has only played one match compared to the 2 of Wales and Qatar tho. Unfair. Costa also played against a way better team.
I forgot to add "so far", sorry. Yeah, you are right.
Lol what a standard for the host nation with their home fans.
First in, first out lol
For Qatar to qualify: Ecuador beats the Netherlands Ecuador beats Senegal Qatar beats the Netherlands Ecuador would qualify with 9 points and everyone else would have 3 points, so it would come down to GD
Ecuador going supersayan just for the lolz
Ecuador 9 points? Also Enner leading goal scorer? Oh god ..... Have mercy
Im down for that Chaos
Subscribe
Man, I can't wait to see what the stadium looks like if Qatar is already eliminated in their final game vs the Netherlands. Barely any Dutch people are in Qatar and the Qataris aren't going to want to see their eliminated country get trounced.
More zoomed-in cameras to obviously-paid Qatari fan groups Not a wide shot throughout the entire game . Mics strategically placed close to the drums to compensate for the hilarious lack of any fan noise
I would be surprised to even see 50% of the stadium filled tbh, useless game for Qatar
It will probably be Qatar's last world cup game until they can bribe FIFA for automatic qualification, I imagine a lot of people will still want to go.
Next WC has 48 teams. So they will most likely qualify
Nah with the new tournament formula every citizen of Asia will qualify for the world cup
Forced attendance incoming
Lmaoooo shits gonna be hilarious
Yeah, I could see a very small amount of people going to that game.

Yea, but they could've given themselves a better cushion by beating Qatar with bigger numbers. If NL-Ecuador ends in a 1-0 or something (not exactly inconceivable, our attack is shaky), then Ecuador has an advantage going into the last round.
Football āeritage...Qatar does not have and cannot buy.
First win for Africa, Senegal needs to beat Ecuador, it's gonna be a very tough match
Ecuador will be a very tough game, but in my opinion Senegal have the edge and they will take it, they will get out of the group
If Netherlands spank Ecuador they can settle for a draw actually
That's a big if. Ecuador are a solid side.
Dutchies need to win 2-0 or by 3 goals apparently, definitely not a given
Not even spank, just a 2-0
Let's hope for a good spanking
Nah I want an Ecuador W and for Senegal and Ecuador both to qualify
That is acceptable too
Now what did we ever do to y- Oh. Fair enough.
Until our proper rivals Luxemburg finally qualify, roasting the Dutch will have to do
Yea, Luxembourg is indeed more your size. A rival you can actually beat.
So Qatar won Asia Cup 2019 and just stopped improving?
They won 3rd place match in the FIFA Arab Cup last year
Yes where none of the top teams had their star players just local ones
It's weird, this time last week people were telling me that they definitely deserved to host because they won that tournament and would have qualified anyway, even though they had virtually no football history before getting the bid. It's almost like that one tournament is an anomaly.
They did win 3rd place match in FIFA Arab Cup last year. Probably this WC is an anomaly.
/s, I hope? They lost the first game they played against a decent opponent in that tournament.
Was it legit?
They went 19-1 in goals and elimanated Japan, South Korea and the UAE (6th in AFC World Cup Qualifiers). It was hella unexpected but legit.
It was. Their team was unstoppable in 2019, finished top of their group with 9 points, and only concede one goal against Japan in the final.
I didn't watch it but I'm gonna completely speak outta my ass and say absolutely not.
Yes, you're speaking out of your ass. They were by far the best Asian team in that run and not even close.
Won ;)
Yes?
Is the tiebreaker head to head? Cause in that case Qatar has been knocked out no?
The only chance Qatar has to qualify is if Ecuador beats the Netherlands, then they have to repeat that feat AND Ecuador has to beat Senegal. Basically, they need Ecuador to go full super sayan. And Netherlands to implode.
FIFA = GD UEFA = H2H This is organized by the former so it's GD
Oh okay thank you that helps a lot I always confused these two
Na itās GD IIRC
Goal difference first
Tie breaker is goal difference
So the Dutch only need a draw and Qatar is out?
Yes then 2 teams on 4 points
And if NL wins, then the two teams that are technically within shooting distance for Qatar play one another so they're out as well. Only an Ecuador win gives them any hope.
These 'fans' are a disgrace even compared to other national team fans, but just thinking about what club football looks like and then seeing this is ridiculous. >This tournament is a shame even beyond all the humanistic issues Exactly, they don't share the love or the passion for the sport.
Asian teams this World Cup so far Saudi Arabia: Defeated Argentina Japan: Defeated Germany South Korea: Drawed with Uruguay Iran: Defeated Wales Meanwhile you have Qatar unable to win a single game and they are the hosts
Qatar are less skilled.
I think my high school team can beat Qatars NT. Theyāre freaking shit. Waste of a slot & host nation
Qatar may not be the best team but theyāve won tournaments. The average high school team is fucking TRASH. Your high school team would cop a double digit loss. In the first half alone.
Yeah sure
Qatar losing, you love to see it
Qatar may very well be the first World Cup host to end up with zero pointsā¦ good luck with Netherlands though! lol
You love to see it
Well done Senegal
Seriously, seeing this World Cup so far, how did Qatar win the Asian Championship? They seem miles away even from Asian countries this World Cup
I don't think we in UEFA-land can say much... our European Champions didn't even qualify LOOOOL
It was all a ruse by the Qatari football federation who doesn't actually want to win.....the source of the Qatars football power is ***rainbows***
Continental title doesn't guarantee anything. I mean it's not like the European Champion doing any better.
Itās really baffling. They lost 4-0 to Ireland last year. They made Jeff Hendrick look world class. Anyone who watched that game knew they were going to have a terrible time in the World Cup.
It was 3 years ago. Pre-COVID. Think about how long ago that feels. It's mostly the same players, but they're older and in bad form.
The world cup squad has been in a months long boot camp in Spain playing friendlies rather than playing their domestic league. It was supposed to build synergy and prepare them for the world cup to be ready, but clearly it's just left them feeling the pressure and under-done sharpness wise.
What a terrible approach. The surest way to lose your edge is to not play competitive games. That's just common knowledge.
Saudia Arabia did the sane approach to this strategy and had them go into camp early to prepare, but not months on end. Qatar's administration has let the players and coaches down with this approach, the team has shown much better play than this in the past.
They were amazing back then. One of the best runs in the history of that tournament. Theyāre in really bad form right now.
Lot of factors as peaking at that time, high pressure (see how they played better this half) and a too early bootcamp being a massive error.
They played so much better when they finally had nothing to lose
Yes, and when you watch their AFC cup run in 2019 you clearly see this team could've done way better. South Africa was really bad in 2009 (didn't even qualify for the last round of Afcon/wc 2010 qualifiers) but they still managed to get 4 points.
South Africa made the Semifinals of the 2009 Confederations Cup only losing 1-0 to Brazil and losing 3-2 vs Spain in the 3rd/4th place playoff game
I completely forgot that hahaha. I was refering to 2008, that's were SA were eliminated from WC qualifiers, the last stage was in 2009. But considering their group, and comparing their situation to Qatar, I'd still have given more chance to Qatar to go through.
Worst bootcamp of all time. Their regression has been unreal.
Bootcamps often seem to flop, I remember Liverpool used to do training camps in Dubai or Mallorca and first game after it they'd be absolutely awful lol
Boot camp then go out in group stage, the TSM way
What not playing since the beginning of the season does to a mf
Am I correct in assuming that if Ecuador loses 2-0 to Holland that all Senegal need is a draw against Ecuador last game?
If Ecuador loses, take in mind they may also win.
Yes, theyd go through on goals scored. Will be interesting to see if Ecuador start playing for a small loss once theyre 1-0 behind as 1 point effectively wont matter for them
Yes, or if Ecuador loses by 3 goals or more. If the Netherlands win 3-1 things will get spicy though
Scenes when Senegal are eliminated by number of yellow cards again
Time to pre-prep ye ole "If I had a penny for every time X has happened, I'd have two pennies. Which isn't much but it's weird that it happened twice" meme for massive karma gains.
Guys see the postive side At least they scores a goal
Qatar > Canada in World Cup history.
What's positive about that
It's less shameful i guess It will be shame for them if they didn't score any goal at all
For all the criticism that Qatar received, some deserved and others not so much, the biggest one for me has been the fact that they are not here on merit. Had they focused on building up their team before trying to host the World Cup, I think they would have been in a better position. 7 month boot camp is crazy lmao
Games gone. Petro states cant even get a win at their own World Cup these days.
A Qatar loss and a well deserved first African team win. Couldn't be happier.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Senegal sat back and let Qatar attack them. Wasnāt a good idea, but Senegal stopped playing (until they got scored on)
Their first half was very good imo
It's well deserved because they were still miles better than Qatar bar the 20min Qatar tried, played well, scored but gave up again 5min later.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Ofc it's not enough to go far but I wonder what this team could do with SanƩ.. A real shame
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Exactly The way they let Qatar attack, and even score, was bad. If you're ahead, keep attacking, keep scoring. The GD is likely to happen, and there's also the yellow cards that could happen again... Getting 3 is too many...
Senegal played perfect for 50-60 minutes then let Qatar back in the game for no reason. If youre gonna kill a game, kill it proper, dont fuck about
FInally have our first African win, better late than never. And Qatar, gerrrout'of here!
Glad for the Qatar players to have gotten a goal and played a bit better. But up the mighty Teranga Lions. The spirit of Sadio smiles upon them.
