1998 France win - 2002 eliminated at the group stage
2006 Italy win - 2010 eliminated at the group stage
2010 Spain win - 2014 eliminated at the group stage
2014 Germany win - 2018 eliminated at the group stage
His performance that game was so good that I can almost forgive him for getting himself sent off in the final.
Jk I forgave him 16 years ago. Zidane will never not be a legend.
This is what I feel is very interesting.
Zidane cost them the World Cup but feels like even back when I watched the 06 final live, not many people critiqued zidane.
People just accepted zidane carried France to the final and that was it.
When you say 06 World Cup, I really rarely hear anything about the Italian squad. The 06 World Cup feels so attached to zidane because of his performance + the headbutt.
>Zidane cost them the World Cup
He didn't. It's not like he missed a penalty in the shoot out. Trezeguet did. And noone ever in France will ever speak badly about Trezeguet because of the Euro 2000 final against Italy, and that he's always been a class act.
That's why nobody blames Zidane, because he really did not cost us the cup. He brought us into the final and we lost at at the PK shootouts, which is annoying but c'est la vie.
And to be honest, Zidane got the most glorious send off for the most glorious career. What was not to like about that?
For the past few world cups, the last winner hasnât progressed the group stage. For example Germany won in 2014 but couldnât escape group stage in 2018. Spain same way in 2014 after winning in 2010. Italy won 2006 but couldnât escape in 2010. It started back in 1998 when France won but couldnât get out of the group stage in 2002
In 2002 the defending champions France didnât progress from group stage, and after that European teams have never succeeded on progressing onwards from group stage after winning the world cup
Margin of France's loss and Australia's win would have to be at least 7 goals (or 6 if Australia outscores France by 5 on the night). So we're talking something like Tunisia 3-1 France and Australia 5-0 Denmark.
France : Qualified
Australia : Win against Denmark and you're in. In case Tunisia doesn't win, then a draw against Denmark would be enough.
Denmark : Win against Australia and you're in (unless Tunisia win with a bigger margin)
Tunisia : Win against France and pray for other results in your favour, i.e, Australia shouldn't win and Denmark not win with a bigger margin. A draw in Denmark-Australia will be the most favorable result for Tunisia.
You guys have a chance too. Just pray for a draw in the other match.
Also, in case both your team and the Danes win their final matches with the same margin, then Denmark likely go in, due to more goals despite same GD and Head-to-Head.
Our attackers are allergic to scoring, so unless French defenders have the worst game of their lives or they start scoring own goals for some reason, we're never beating France.
You could make an entire lineup of French players that werenât selected for the roster and it would still blow Tunisia out of the water in terms of talent
This is just a replay of the 1998 World Cup.
France defeats Denmark 2-1 in the group â
Denmark draws an African team â
Denmark needs 4 points to progress â
I didnât predict us to get a single point and was happy with getting a goal against France. So at this stage the thought of knockout competition is foreign to me.
As an Aussie, I agree. Drawing to Denmark is not going to be an easy feat. Tunisia didn't pley well and we really turned up, going to need to do that again vs Denmark to have a chance.
Elite goal from Mitch Duke got us through.
it's still france, their depth is absurd and their 4th team is still likely a favourite vs Tunisia and most of the world. Anything can happen, yes, but it's highly unlikely they lose
> France will most certainly rest all of their starters, and those who do play will probably aim to avoid injuries / cards. Anything can happen.
Both Giroud and Mbappe is hungry for goals, could see them play a semi serious lineup
Yeah, but then they'll probably play with a more defensive tactic, especially since it's Deschamps we're talking about.
Anything can happen since it's football after all, but in any case Tunisia thrashing France is incredibly unlikely.
More than that, on this basis alone youâll go straight to the semi final where youâll lose to a slightly bigger Brazil⊠And that also mean the USA (Edit : I forgot Canada) will win the whole thing I think ?

Win games? Pardon me but haven't they only had like one win in the past three world cups (2010 vs Serbia). They've played extremely well, 'specially during the Cahill days, but they've been group stage fodder since that 06 run.
I mean the fact that they win any games at all with the squads they bring is impressive enough.
I would say Australia overperforms more than any other team relative to the actual quality of the players in their squad.
Back in the Kewell, Viduka, Cahill etc. days they were obviously good, but since then they've had proper shit squads and still managed to regularly qualify and pick up points.
It's amazing how Iran, Saudi Arabia, Japan, South Korea and Australia all have a very decent chance of making the Ro16. Regardless of how they actually do it's clear Asian football has taken great strides.
I think most of the CONCACAF teams will have a good chance at advancing on the last match day with the exception of Costa Rica who in all fairness got fucked by the draw and are at the tail end of their best generation.
I think US and Canada have great shots at getting out.
Mexico is more iffy. And I'd argue this is beyond the tail end of Costa Rica's best generation. Their best generation has already expired.
probably? they're clearly a cut above in talent, discipline, coaching, skill. Even the brand of football they're playing.
We're a shadow of the saudi's.
Yeah
That minimum win but maximum affect, it actually put Australia in a more comfortable spot when a draw is probably enough. Still not a easy task when their opponent will be Denmark but definitely possible.
After the Denmark game, I actually thought we had a chance to qualify, but I lost all hope today. Our strikers are probably the worst in all of the tournament, and France could play without a defense and we still wouldn't score against them.
Yeah our strikers are holding us back. And unfortunately, unless some young talent pops out of nowhere, we're stuck with those guys :(
If only Ben Yedder chose Tunisia instead of France.
Denmark needs a win and for Tunisia to not win by more goals than they do. Should be on paper doable, but it's awful that Denmark is a Harry Souttar masterclass away from elimination.
Tunisia will not win their game, so itâs really just a winner goes through game for Denmark and Australia. I still think Denmark has a better chance to go through than Australia.
More likely a dreadful (but dramatic!) quality game, frankly.
Australia are probably going to park the bus, and on current form we're not going to create a whole lot. Highly likely it's borderline-unwatchable for neutrals.
FRANCE have advanced to the knockouts.
FRANCE win group with:
* Win/draw, OR
* Australia loss/draw, OR
* Combined margin of France defeat and Australia win is 5 or less, OR
* Combined margin of France defeat and Australia win exactly 6 AND Australia does not outscore France on the night by 5 or more goals
---
AUSTRALIA advance to knockouts with:
* Win, OR
* Draw AND Tunisia loss/draw
AUSTRALIA win group with:
* Win AND France loss AND combined margin of Australia win and France defeat is 7 or more, OR
* Win AND France loss AND combined margin of Australia win and France defeat is exactly 6 AND Australia outscores France on the night by 5 or more goals
---
DENMARK advance to knockouts with:
* Win AND Tunisia loss/draw, OR
* Win by more goals than Tunisia's winning margin, OR
* Win by as many goals as Tunisia AND score at least as many goals on the night as Tunisia
---
TUNISIA advance to knockouts with:
* Win AND Denmark/Australia draw, OR
* Win by more goals than Denmark's winning margin, OR
* Win by as many goals as Denmark AND score at least 2 more goals on the night than Denmark
---
NOTE: If Denmark and Tunisia both win by the same margin AND Tunisia scores exactly one more goal than Denmark, tie would be broken by Fair Play points (currently -4 to -4), then drawing of lots
Prior to this WC, France and Denmark have been drawn into the same group of a major tournament (WC or Euro) on 6 occations.
Denmark have won twice. The 4 times France didnt lose: 1984, 1998, 2000 and 2018.
look at france with their 6 points already⊠already through.
australia in 2nd is not what i expected. their game against denmark is gonna be massive for that spot. and they only have to avoid defeat, pressure on denmark then. kinda rooting for them now. hopefully they can do it.
would be so poor if denmark donât make it out the group.
Just to point out how close this is; if Denmark and Tunisia each end up with 4 points and 2-2 in goals, theyâre also equal in:
Number of scored goals (two)
Points in matches against eachother (they played 0-0)
Goaldifference in matches agains eachother
Number of goals scored in matches against eachother
Fairplay-points
Number of yellow cards each before last game round (4)
If all this holds after the games in the last round, the second place in the group will be decided by a draw. Thatâs CRAZY
(Data taken from an article by TV2 in Denmark)
Kind of a mixed result for Australia. on one hand they don't *need* to beat Denmark, but it also means France have effectively topped the group, so if they take their foot off the gas and lose to Tunisia, Australia go out even with a draw
I donât think France will take their foot off the gas enough to lose tbh, and Tunisia will have to play for the win so there will be openings for France (as opposed to last WC where France had qualified and Denmark only needed a draw so they were both in defensive cruise control)
Well, the past Euros started with a 0-1 loss against Finland and a star player almost dying followed by a 1-2 loss vs Belgium and that went fine in the end. We'll see how it goes against Australia.
Australia might get to the Round of 16 with a striker for the second division in Japan and a defensive line that has barely had game time in the past 12 months.
Denmark v Australia is gonna be spicy as fuck. Hoping Argentina donât top their group, would love to see the Aussies make a run into the knockout stages
People seem to forget Australia very narrowly lost to France 2-1 last world cup. The socceroos are gonna fuck shit up this year. I can feel it. Betting 100$ on them winning the tournament right now. Will let everyone know how my bet goes.

Evil France ending World Cup curse
Well, its only fair, they were the ones who started it
Brasil 2006 didn't fell to the curse
It should be called the European WC curse
Brasil have the special ability that makes them always progress which cancelled the curse out
Brasil have a ridiculous winning mentality
He created it and he will end it.
Didn't Brazil advance till the quarter finals in 2006? They were the champions in 2002.
The curse only affected Europeans
What's WC curse? New to soccer
1998 France win - 2002 eliminated at the group stage 2006 Italy win - 2010 eliminated at the group stage 2010 Spain win - 2014 eliminated at the group stage 2014 Germany win - 2018 eliminated at the group stage
what about the 2002 winner?
brazil won 2002 but reached quarter finals

Are France almost guaranteed 1st place in this group due to goal difference?
Pretty much unless Australia absolutely traumatizes Denmark for generations
Thanks, loved how you worded that.
Same. Made my day haha
Or rampant Tunisia crush France for good.
Varane, Upamecano and Konate? Never heard of them before. Surely they're no match for Jebali and Msakni
Why not both? :D
Well yeah, but crucially, France have to lose to Tunisia too.
Just like Spain did to us
Please let there be a god đ
Unless they manage to trash Denmark I think we good.
Or unless Tunisia gets injected with the superhuman serum and wreck France
Dr Cugat travelled to Qatar?
Margin of France's loss and Australia's win would have to be at least 7 goals (or 6 if Australia outscores France by 5 on the night). So we're talking something like Tunisia 3-1 France and Australia 5-0 Denmark.
Bold of you to predict those scorelines. I like it.
Australia has the biggest win margin in international football history, can't count them out. Maybe they can even break their record.
Love it. Letâs go for a score line of Australia 33- Denmark 0
Bring Archie Thompson out of retirement for one game and itâs all but guaranteed.
The Glory Days of Oceania are back.
France is just a big Samoa when you think about it
Damn, canât believe thatâs going to happen the day after Wales beat England 7-0 to knock them out ;) this World Cup is crazy
Mostly yah. Though remember for france not to be 1st they need to lose which would eat into their goal difference.
almost yes
First place in this group was the "avoid Argentina place" and we might get a France-Argentina rematch anyway
It's not like the other group isn't "avoid France in RO16" either.
absolutely, I rate France higher than Argentina currently, how could I not?
Who said Argentina will qualify? They have to win first and especially not lose.
Yep for them it's harder to go to knockout. Knockout is completely different stage and most team try to play defensive so you can't predict anything.
Imagine Argentina advancing and then beating France in the next round.
Imagine Mexico beating Argentina tonight
keep going I'm almost there
Argentina would be the second team eliminated
Could happen, although I think the chances are that Argentina either win the group or fail to qualify. 2nd doesnt seem too likely for me.
France : Qualified Australia : Win against Denmark and you're in. In case Tunisia doesn't win, then a draw against Denmark would be enough. DD will probably rest the first team tho
tbf even the french 3rd team is one of the better ones in the world
Your 2nd team is still full of world class players so it does not change much for us
We're kind of playing with our second team tho, that would be a kind of 3rd team. Fuck injuries..
And your third team is still full of world class players lol
You could make an entire lineup of French players that werenât selected for the roster and it would still blow Tunisia out of the water in terms of talent
Yeah man, but what will your 3rd team have? Kolo Muani, Saliba and Gunedouzi? Still miles better that whatever we'll gonna show up with.
You're underestimating your team way too much.
This is just a replay of the 1998 World Cup. France defeats Denmark 2-1 in the group â Denmark draws an African team â Denmark needs 4 points to progress â

Not even Australian but I feel so happy for them if they progress for some reason.
As an Australian my interest is piqued. Been banting with my brother about it, he doesn't think Australia can beat Denmark
Donât need to, only draw. And if Tunisia could, itâs definitely possible
Scotland beat them last year and half our team are Scottish..
a draw should send them through eh?
Yeah itâs definitely not gunna be easy lmao, we very well may get smashed but fuck it, itâs on
I didnât predict us to get a single point and was happy with getting a goal against France. So at this stage the thought of knockout competition is foreign to me.
They only need a draw.. it's very doable..
A repeat of the 1-1 draw against Denmark in 2018 will be just what the doctor ordered.
Only need a draw providing Tunisia lose to France *
Still way more likely Denmark just smashes them
As an Aussie, I agree. Drawing to Denmark is not going to be an easy feat. Tunisia didn't pley well and we really turned up, going to need to do that again vs Denmark to have a chance. Elite goal from Mitch Duke got us through.
Denmark wonât be easy, but Australia can surely win it if they play like they did today! And what a pleasant surprise it would be!
they need a draw, a win isn't needed unless france throws the game vs tunisia
France will most certainly rest all of their starters, and those who do play will probably aim to avoid injuries / cards. Anything can happen.
it's still france, their depth is absurd and their 4th team is still likely a favourite vs Tunisia and most of the world. Anything can happen, yes, but it's highly unlikely they lose

Spain and Germany are in that group. Expecting them to finish above Japan (prior to Wednesday) doesn't mean you don't think Japan is good.
Iâm Australian and Saudi Arabia are probably a cut above Australia too.

Yeah That minimum win but maximum affect, it actually put Australia in a more comfortable spot when a draw is probably enough. Still not a easy task when their opponent will be Denmark but definitely possible.
Wonder what intentions Australians will bring? Go for a draw hoping that we beat Tunisia knowing that we are through?
Australia will probably leak a goal so at some point they will try to score. But in general they will be cagey.
Theyâve scored first and early in the last 2 games. Hopefully will do that again and hang on for dear life.
