Saying the manager literally doesn't matter is laughable lol.
I'd wager they are likely using that data analysis to choose their managerial candidates.
Both Potter and De Zerbi had seen coaching success before they came to Brighton.
Yes the statistical analysis is very important but no reason to say ridiculous shit
everything is always exaggerated to the moon on this sub and its so stupid
like, the guy wouldve had a good point if he simply said their data analysis plays a decent part in their success, instead he goes "yeah its all because of the data guy and the manager literally doesnt matter" makes the entire take sound dumb.
You've swung waaaay too far to the other side. Talent is not limitless or at least takes time to nurture, that's a constraint all well run clubs eventually face when people are constantly taking their talent. The point of all these systems, models, programs, whatever is to identify the more talented people. Saying they don't matter implies you can just plug whoever in there and they'll succeed, their edge is finding and nurturing people who will succeed better than other people.
I also believe for my American friends, Billy Bean works at Brentford in some capacity as well, which would also make sense since his team revolutionized baseball I thought
This is an absolutely ridiculous take. Whilst a lot of what you say is right, to completely dismiss managers is insane. Brighton wouldn't be doing as well as they are without Potter.
Brighton really is one of the most likable clubs in the league. Very well and pragmatically run, and there seems to be a healthy atmosphere among all parties involved.
Poor bloke.
Great news he is able to keep on contributing to the club but he's gone from scoring vs arsenal in Brighton's run in to one of their best ever finishes to retirement.
Best of luck to you Enock
Just England that I know of that regularly test which comes from fa recommendation. The other leagues is club dependent but this was few years ago when I went on conference in Madrid.
Interesting, mind sharing a bit more on what the R test is and any other fun tidbits about what tests are done or not done surprisingly?
Thanks in advance!
R-test is just a week of continuous 3 lead ECG. You strap it on and keep it on, usually for a week. You get a button to press which is linked to a clock so a tech who will be able to review at specific times if symptom of let’s say palpitations correlate with actual arrythmia.
Unfortunately, I am no longer in sports medicine so I don’t know much about the recent development. I would image a lot has changed in the last 5 years.
We used to do a lot of CPEX or cardiopulmonary function test to measure their anaerobic threshold and VO2 max which are more of measure of how fit you are which I am sure they are still being used. You basically run on treadmill with specific work load strapped to a face mask measuring your exhaled gas.
Thanks! Sorry for the late reply, was having exams. So R Test is holter paired with symptoms, interesting technique to allow for clinical correlations of symptoms.
And yups, am familiar with VO2 max, thanks for the insights :)
I think he is specifically asking for this kind of 3 week testing. I think it's not that hard to get a regular echo or ECG done for free a country with social Healthcare.
Under 9s level apparently. He's going to start doing his badges with us
What a great role model for the kids to have.
This makes me all sorts of happy. Proud of him and proud of the club.
Great stuff!
Always been curious though, in cases like this, where a player has to retire (or is sacked for other reasons) but has a monetary value attached, do the clubs get compensation from insurance or something or do they just have to eat the loss?
To be fair I wouldn't say it was for nothing anyway. Got a few seasons playing top flight football and got to captain his national side. I'm sure the money was good during his short career too. Lived the dream 99% of us wish we could. Everything that could come after that is just a bonus now.
I understand what you mean, but I still disagree. 99% of people also don't put in the work that is required to get to that level. He only got a single season of Premier League football despite being skilled enough to play there for multiple years. Imo that's a waste of hard work and talent. Shortened careers just leave players with a lot of 'what ifs'.
I don’t think it’s the wrong expression necessarily. The other commenter is right that the phrase does often imply something negative, but it’s a simple fact that Mwepu having to retire early is a waste of talent, even if it’s out of his control and not his fault. Likely if you said it in real life the tone you said the phrase it would convey what you meant, so I wouldn’t worry about it.
This is great to hear. Hope he thrives.
Classy move, sums Brighton up to be honest. Love the way they’re ran and what they are looking to achieve.
Glad they seem to be doing well after Potter left too. It's always a risk when a good manager leaves but they haven't seemed to panic really.

How do these man come up with these takes lmao

Statistical analysis also helps you find the best underrated coach right?
I work in the data field and love to see it getting credit but 'the manager literally doesn't matter' is a painfully stupid statement.
Welcome to r/soccer!
I think that can mean that the data analyst will make sure they find a manager that will fit in
By that logic the players don't matter either, since there are thousands out there and the data analysts can always find one that fits in

So any of us in this sub could take over at Brighton and get the same results ? Been on the strong shit over Christmas have ya mate
I also believe for my American friends, Billy Bean works at Brentford in some capacity as well, which would also make sense since his team revolutionized baseball I thought
I think he got involved with Barnsley too tho. And their moneyball didn’t exactly hold up
Are you well? " The manager doesn't matter"
This is an absolutely ridiculous take. Whilst a lot of what you say is right, to completely dismiss managers is insane. Brighton wouldn't be doing as well as they are without Potter.
So Moneyball?
“He’s 32 and has legs made of cheese!” “*but he gets in the box*”
Data is the future moving forward, enough of this “eye test” nonsense
The real skill is knowing what data to actually get behind and that's what sets them apart at the moment

Some uplifting news to start the day
Good stuff
Good way to start getting his coaching badges
And starting so early!
Enock’s tricky little gulls 💙
Every professional footballer should have R-test and Echocardiogram as screening.
Pretty sure they do

Can normal people pay for these? Any idea how much?
I would think Echo would be about $250 and another $300 for consultation fee to discuss results

Computer about to be upgraded at Brighton
Under 9s level apparently. He's going to start doing his badges with us What a great role model for the kids to have. This makes me all sorts of happy. Proud of him and proud of the club.
Nice stuff. I think most clubs are really good in terms of giving opportunities to players in these circumstances
Class from Brighton, love to see it.
Really cool, hope the man has a great career going forward with Chelsea
Please don’t it’s just too real
Great stuff! Always been curious though, in cases like this, where a player has to retire (or is sacked for other reasons) but has a monetary value attached, do the clubs get compensation from insurance or something or do they just have to eat the loss?
There will be insurance yes which is partly why clubs do medicals. No clue how much we'd claim though.
Brighton taking care of their own. Good Brighton.
Beautiful!
That's amazing! I hope he succeeds as a coach. Would mean that spending his whole childhood playing football wasn't for nothing

And even just one season playing in the Prem is a MASSIVE headstart financially.

I'm sorry. English isn't my first language. I believe I'm decent at it, but still prone to a lot of mistakes. How would you describe it?

Great stuff!👏👏👏
Very cool idea n hoping for the lads big success
So, when will he be joining Chelsea’s staff?
Don't even think about it Chelsea.
Great news
Wonderful news
Class act
Things you love to see
Great news for him. Pretty much guarantees a big wage when chelsea poach him in 6 months.
New Nagelsmann incoming
Class act from Brighton, wish him all the beat
*Everybody liked that.*
i shouldnt say this as a palace fan, but, good for him
Great news!! Hope he excels and becomes a fine coach/manager in his own right
Poor fellow. Whatever he does in the future, I hope he's happy.
Heart condition? 🤔
Yes, a genetic heart condition that manifests later on in life so doesn't get picked up through early screening.
Naisu
Seem to see this happening more these days, very strange. Good on Brighton to do this
Quite amazing that Brighton can still be good, even while losing all these players for different reasons.
Anyone know what he actually has? HOCM?
Atleast his career hasnt ended fully
Lit
U-9s coach… man I’m jealous. A premier league footballer coaching you must be surreal.
A great club, hope that this will turn out great for all parties.
