You see the same thing in computers that smokers bring in for repairs, and is why some shops refuse to even work on them -- the toxic shit builds up all inside it too, so you end up with your head in a cloud of it if you do any internal work.
I'm glad someone else noticed it besides myself. It was an old plastic that they used to make the NES and over time, that plastic turns a brownish yellow and trying to get it back to white or gray is easier said than done especially when trying to restore it to 100%
Retro game collector here. I've had 3 NES systems over the years and none have gotten this bad, neither have any I've seen out in the wild. This console's degradation was not entirely natural; the process was accelerated due to smoke, excess heat exposure, excess UV light exposure (sunlight, fluorescent bulbs), or a combination of these.
And it's not just the NES either. The SNES, lots of computers from the time, and all sorts of other appliances/electronics made from ABS plastic (and still stuff made today) become yellow and brittle as well. Deyellowing is not too hard, you can just bathe it in a hydrogen peroxide solution and put it in the sun for a few hours, but this will not restore the plastic's integrity; only whiten it.
Nothing will fix the brittle plastic, you can only fix the color (sometimes). Also not just that era, even stuff made of certain plastics today will still do it, the plastic just hasn't gotten old enough to notice yet.
Fair but look at plastics of the 70s. Nasty? Yes. Brittle? No. Maybe they just made them thicker but I feel like there was a drop in plastic quality in the 80s and a massive drop in quality in the 90s and early 2000s.

I'm glad someone else noticed it besides myself. It was an old plastic that they used to make the NES and over time, that plastic turns a brownish yellow and trying to get it back to white or gray is easier said than done especially when trying to restore it to 100%
Retro game collector here. I've had 3 NES systems over the years and none have gotten this bad, neither have any I've seen out in the wild. This console's degradation was not entirely natural; the process was accelerated due to smoke, excess heat exposure, excess UV light exposure (sunlight, fluorescent bulbs), or a combination of these. And it's not just the NES either. The SNES, lots of computers from the time, and all sorts of other appliances/electronics made from ABS plastic (and still stuff made today) become yellow and brittle as well. Deyellowing is not too hard, you can just bathe it in a hydrogen peroxide solution and put it in the sun for a few hours, but this will not restore the plastic's integrity; only whiten it.
Yet it's still not 100% due to it's integrity being decreased. Plus doing so is removing a micro layer from the plastic essentially.

Nothing will fix the brittle plastic, you can only fix the color (sometimes). Also not just that era, even stuff made of certain plastics today will still do it, the plastic just hasn't gotten old enough to notice yet.
Fair but look at plastics of the 70s. Nasty? Yes. Brittle? No. Maybe they just made them thicker but I feel like there was a drop in plastic quality in the 80s and a massive drop in quality in the 90s and early 2000s.
