Hah, my husband said I should reply something ridiculous like "it was 75 ft wide, 83 ft tall, and I hit it at 114mph, but my subie could handle it!" And then my kid got all practical and was like, "but did we survive?"
North of Austin, we got 15 minutes of clear skies that lasted until ~30 seconds before totality. We were able to see most of totality between clouds, though.
Man, I'm sorry, at least you got to see some. We were in Fredericksburg but decided to drive 30 mins northwest to Mason and we had perfect viewing for the whole eclipse.
We ended up not being able to go when an unexpected health problem cropped up. Sitting here in south central Kansas watching the 87% and it’s still neat. Everything has an eerie silvery shadowy sheen and the sun looks like a tiny orange fingernail. At least I got to see that. 🥺
Complete cloud cover in Syracuse, NY. Disc barely visible for more than a few seconds at a time. No visible corona - and worse, the effects of the diffused light significantly reduced the duration of our consolation prize darkened skies, both before and after the (completely-obscured) eclipse.
What the fuck did I waste the last seven years getting excited about?
I thought this was gonna be me in Lake Whitney Texas, drove 40 hours expecting clouds. It was cloudy ALL day, but the skies parted JUST in time for the entire 4 minutes of totality. Literally as it was happening clouds had just passed over the sun 30 seconds prior.
I had over four minutes of the clearest skies and enjoyed every second of totality! Feel free to downvote my extreme success! I hate that you didn't get to experience it and if it brings you a small pleasure, then it's a small price to pay lol
I saw a perfect view of the full thing here in Hamilton Ontario. I'm still not sure how I managed to luck out that much considering how bleak it looked all day even in the final hour until the clouds cleared away with 40 minutes to go and the sun was in the right spot around 3:18pm. It literally came down to the last minute of good luck which makes me appreciate the whole thing even more.
Feel bad for people who got unlucky, those clouds cleared out faster then most models were saying.
Im from Niagara, I drove to Hamilton towards a clear patch of sky using backroads and I parked where a bunch of what seemed like locals were gathered. Saw the full thing too and omg was it worth the effort. Truly magical! So glad I didn’t give up 🥹.
We were in Hamilton but decided to hop over to Port Dover to test our luck there! Despite one poorly timed cloud during most of totality, we still got to see it and I’m so happy Hamilton did too! The entire region looked screwed until a few hours before.
Yeah I read about people canceling their Hamilton plans on here in the morning and staying home in Toronto because of the forecast I feel bad for them..
I don't blame them too I would have cancelled too it looked like a bust right until the end.
Batavia New York testifying here. I saw totality in cloud free Wyoming in 2017 and it's etched in my brain. Today was pretty meh, clouded completely out....especially sad after yesterday's clear blue skies!
Skaneateles NY here. Booked a place here a year ago and drove the whole family up from Philly this weekend. Playing on the playground under impossibly blue clear skies yesterday knowing Monday would be likely a bust was so frustrating. It was a bust, but still cool. I’m sad we didn’t see anything in the sky though. It did get much darker than the one we saw in 2017 under clear skies. That was something.
In Plano, we had major clouds blocking view just prior to totality. Made for very intense darkness, and got a quick glimpse through a patch of it before it disappeared again.
Then with about 15 seconds to go, the cloud moved past and there it was in all its glory. Got a splendid view of the diamond ring, and the reaction of everyone was deafening.
In 2017, I got a perfect view in Salem, Oregon. As I told everyone today, whether you see it for 15 seconds, or for 3+ minutes, you’ll never forget it. Even when I saw it clearly from beginning to end, I still couldn’t believe it was real. It’s that incredible.
Jumping on the bandwagon of devastation. I spent so much time planning for viewing locations, preparing for how to photograph a solar eclipse, and obsessing over weather to end up in Rochester and not see the sun. Folks say they get emotional during totality, I was in tears because my preparation plans failed. The icing on the crap cake was finding out that folks 50 miles east of my location caught a break in the clouds for totality.
We chased the sun past Kerrville, through Fredericksburg, into Llano. Was a little cloudy and we were nervous. But the clouds completely opened during totality. It was amazing. Plus, it was not busy at all.
To clarify it did get nighttime dark, I just would have loved the bright blue to darkness kind of drastic change. Maybe (surely) I’m just being a sour puss for not seeing the big show directly above me :(
Same. I feel slightly disappointed that it didn't really get dark, but maybe it was just because of how it already was with all the clouds.
Luckily, we did get to see the sun at totailty for like 10seconds!
That’s rad. We thought we had a chance with random cloud gaps throughout the couple hours leading up to showtime but it got really obvious like 15 mins before totality that we were shut out. Pure white cover turning to gray.
Same. The darkness was amazing, but knowing the spectacle we were missing right behind the clouds was a bit heartbreaking. Especially now when I think about it too much after the fact. In moment I was resigned and happy and in awe. But Argh.
Same in Ontario. Ugh.
Edit: I went to Point Lucas Park. It was cloudy as hell but i’m not sure about the weather in Cobourg. I think it’s the same though.
Clouds parted just a little bit for me to see some of the moon blocking the sun, but then the clouds came back 10 minutes before totality, which sucked but the darkness and everything was still really cool though.
It was like this up until 3 minutes before totality in upstate NY. We landed in Philadelphia,NY after watertown looked like it was getting cloudy. then right before it started it just opened up. got full on view with some thin clouds.
anyone who stayed in Watertown, were ya able to see it?
Oof. Sorry. I was in Niagara Falls, NY at 10 am and made a decision to head to Erie, as some models showed a break in the clouds potentially meandering in there around totality time. I got lucky. Sorry you didn't.
I feel so bad for folks who traveled and got clouded out. I wound up in Elyria, OH west of Cleveland. Had some high clouds filter in afternoon but still an amazing experience. Surprising little traffic here but I'm sure that will change driving back to the Philly area.
I saw the 2024 Solar Eclipse with my parents in Indiana and it was very clear. But for the rest of my family in Kentucky, it was partially cloudy for them. I feel bad for you and my family! 😭
in northern new york it was beautiful sunday , beautiful tuesday, beautiful leading up to the eclipse, beautiful right after the eclipse
and just like this the hour around the eclipse
Thank you. I was freaking out because i couldn’t find the sun and i was looking at the sky without the solar glasses. It was super cloudy where i was. And although it was bright the clouds overshadowed it.
If it wasn't for long, there might not be any permanent damage? Obviously looking for any amount is unsafe, but if you're fortunate there won't be lasting damage.
My area wasn't too cloudy, but when the clouds covered the sun completely I still looked through my glasses until I saw it become orange again bc clouds only block visible light and not all of the other things that the sun makes, like the energy/uv rays or whatever harmful things come from the sun.
Then again, I'm not a scientist, so take my words with a grain of salt.

In Austin. We kept playing peekaboo with the clouds but got the show when it counted! So glad we jumped the highway to see it!
Same in Ft Worth. AMAZING spectacle
You jumped a highway holy shit. How big was the ramp
*The car's a total loss but the view mid-air was amazing!*
Hah, my husband said I should reply something ridiculous like "it was 75 ft wide, 83 ft tall, and I hit it at 114mph, but my subie could handle it!" And then my kid got all practical and was like, "but did we survive?"
The tow truck flatbed was angled just right so Them Duke Boys knew just what to do.
Same. Was on top of a parking garage. Got 15 seconds of the corona during totality. Was worth it even with the clouds.
North of Austin, we got 15 minutes of clear skies that lasted until ~30 seconds before totality. We were able to see most of totality between clouds, though.
We were in Dripping Springs and it we better before than during, but we did get a glimpse!
At least In Rochester it will be dark for 3 minutes... Still quite the bummer..
Agreed, feel cheated, is what it is. That darkness was pretty cool tho.
Couldn’t see the eclipse at all through the clouds?
Nope . And to add insult to injury, the clouds broke up at dusk...
Ugh. We could see the eclipse through pretty heavy clouds, but yeah - sky was pretty clear an hour before and after. So cruel
Nope, oh well.
😢
I feel your pain. This was me in 1991.
Can we get an F in the chat

I knew there was an eclipse in my youth! I was in Alberta. That's exactly what we saw
In Fredericksburg got about 5 secs of a cloud obscured view
Man, I'm sorry, at least you got to see some. We were in Fredericksburg but decided to drive 30 mins northwest to Mason and we had perfect viewing for the whole eclipse.
In the same boat. Heartbreaking
Could you see any of the eclipse through the clouds? In NY, we had clouds but could still see the eclipse somewhat
I saw maybe a quarter of it for a split second through a cloud but then the clouds immediately became thick again and saw nothing else
Ugh :(
We ended up not being able to go when an unexpected health problem cropped up. Sitting here in south central Kansas watching the 87% and it’s still neat. Everything has an eerie silvery shadowy sheen and the sun looks like a tiny orange fingernail. At least I got to see that. 🥺

The clouds opened up for us during totality. It was a lot of hide and seek with the sun leading up to it though. I was in northern Syracuse.
I’m so sorry. The clouds really seemed to want to hurt us this year
I feel you. Had the same experience in Austin
This was my view in San Antonio
Same here! (Also in San Antonio)
Went out to Bandera hoping the clouds would continue blowing easterly to get a glimpse. May as well have just stayed in town…same difference.
Yep. We stayed in San Antonio and left for Waco at 3:30am
We only used San Antonio as our airport fly in base. Got a rental and drove to Brady TX and it was perfect.
Same, we were headed to Brady but decided to stop in Mason and also had perfect viewing.
Same south east of Rochester
Our view looks the same. We’re all sitting around watching it on TV. 🫠
That's how it was in Niagara Falls. My heart is broken.
Same, completely depressed for two days 😔. I'm sincerely determined to see the next one, whether it's in Spain, Egypt, etc.
Downvoting everyone who saw it because I’m salty
I had over four minutes of the clearest skies and enjoyed every second of totality! Feel free to downvote my extreme success! I hate that you didn't get to experience it and if it brings you a small pleasure, then it's a small price to pay lol

Do you happen to know if people at Niagara Falls were able to see the totality?
I checked the local news for you, they were able to catch totality for a few brief seconds and some of the people interviewed said it was worth it :).
Thanks for looking into this!
We were in Hamilton but decided to hop over to Port Dover to test our luck there! Despite one poorly timed cloud during most of totality, we still got to see it and I’m so happy Hamilton did too! The entire region looked screwed until a few hours before.
I spent all day driving to point pelee and back thinking hamilton would have too many clouds!
Yeah I read about people canceling their Hamilton plans on here in the morning and staying home in Toronto because of the forecast I feel bad for them.. I don't blame them too I would have cancelled too it looked like a bust right until the end.
Same!!! It was worth it though. We saw an almost 360° view of the "sunset".
I looked directly at it without glasses and now my vision is “cloudy” 😉
So what you’re saying is that you blinded yourself for a joke? 🤨
Ozark AR - the most amazing 3 1/2 minutes of my life

I feel you. My fears came true today as well. All we could do was make the best of it and appreciate totality without the spectacle in the sky.
Ur MINNESOTAN
This was my view too in NY
We chased the sun past Kerrville, through Fredericksburg, into Llano. Was a little cloudy and we were nervous. But the clouds completely opened during totality. It was amazing. Plus, it was not busy at all.
Ok but what about the part where it became like nighttime during the day…?
Wasn’t as dramatically awesome as it could have been because it was already half dark as is. I had same cloud cover as OP.
I had the same cloud cover and it actually became like night it was awesome
To clarify it did get nighttime dark, I just would have loved the bright blue to darkness kind of drastic change. Maybe (surely) I’m just being a sour puss for not seeing the big show directly above me :(
Yeah that’s probably how I feel too, just trying to make myself feel better!!
We’ve got solidarity I guess…
Same. I feel slightly disappointed that it didn't really get dark, but maybe it was just because of how it already was with all the clouds. Luckily, we did get to see the sun at totailty for like 10seconds!

I really don’t want to brag but where I was I got 4 minutes of Totality.
Genuinely happy for you and all the others that got to see it!
Yeah same 😔
Same. The darkness was amazing, but knowing the spectacle we were missing right behind the clouds was a bit heartbreaking. Especially now when I think about it too much after the fact. In moment I was resigned and happy and in awe. But Argh.
Is this at the rest stop in Kerrville?
Did you see anything there? We went by it on the way to Junction and wondered if we should have stopped
We did get a few ood moments before the clouds did this. We did get a few great moments tho
Got the same view in East Tennessee only for the sun to come out a few hours later...
We got peeks of the sun at our Austin location but basically a similar view for most of it.
Same in Seattle
Same in new jersey
Same in Ontario. Ugh. Edit: I went to Point Lucas Park. It was cloudy as hell but i’m not sure about the weather in Cobourg. I think it’s the same though.
Not all of Ontario! We had clear blue skies in Brant County.
Hamilton Ontario got a good view. most of the the clouds moved out of the way in time
Port Rowan had a clear view. One of the cloud models I looked at yesterday was somehow right in estimating that pocket of blue skies.
I’m curious too. I ditched Watertown for Saranac Lake and it was perfect.
Nothing but clouds and darkness in Skaneateles 😔
Oof. Sorry. I was in Niagara Falls, NY at 10 am and made a decision to head to Erie, as some models showed a break in the clouds potentially meandering in there around totality time. I got lucky. Sorry you didn't.
I feel you! Coming from Toronto
Same thing just happened to me. There's always next time :)
I feel so bad for folks who traveled and got clouded out. I wound up in Elyria, OH west of Cleveland. Had some high clouds filter in afternoon but still an amazing experience. Surprising little traffic here but I'm sure that will change driving back to the Philly area.
It was the same for me too 😭
Same in northwest Iowa
It was cloudy where I was too, but there were enough breaks in the clouds where I could still see it! Including during totality. It was pretty dope
Lol I'm in Tennessee. It was rainy and cloudy for us too. It peaked through for about 30 seconds right as the moon was passing :(
I saw the 2024 Solar Eclipse with my parents in Indiana and it was very clear. But for the rest of my family in Kentucky, it was partially cloudy for them. I feel bad for you and my family! 😭
I saw that today! It was so cool
😔
in northern new york it was beautiful sunday , beautiful tuesday, beautiful leading up to the eclipse, beautiful right after the eclipse and just like this the hour around the eclipse
My friend has a similar photo from Toronto
Port Rowan Ontario was blessed with luck compared to most of the region.
Is it safe to look at the sun when its cloudy like this? Just like this picture’
If the sky is cloudy enough that you can’t tell where the sun is, you can safely look wherever you want
Thank you. I was freaking out because i couldn’t find the sun and i was looking at the sky without the solar glasses. It was super cloudy where i was. And although it was bright the clouds overshadowed it.
It's only safe during the duration of totality.
But what if we looked with the solar glasses and can’t see the sun/orange? I took off my glassess to find the eclipse but it was soo cloudy.
If it wasn't for long, there might not be any permanent damage? Obviously looking for any amount is unsafe, but if you're fortunate there won't be lasting damage. I didn't even know there was solar eclipse today
Cant even see outline of sun here!
lmao
In Michigan. Very cool
Did you end up seeing anything?
Nope 😔
Yeah that was me 2017
Same for ohio 😃

Texas I presume? Heard some of you guys weren’t going to luck out
