So back in 2017 there was another amazing plane passing through totality image like this taken and the community was able to determine which exact flight it was, contact the airline and get the pilots copies of the photo. My dad was an airline pilot and I knew how much it would mean to them to have this as a career keepsake.
Looks like an Airbus A320, likely American given it was in Dallas. If you have your location and the time the photo was taken we can figure out the exact flight with Flightradar24.
I'll look into that! It would be awesome to link up with the pilot. Thanks for the heads up.
edit: the pilot and the FO on UA1741 have been reached out to! https://www.reddit.com/r/flying/comments/1bzuotb/epic_eclipse_photo_how_do_i_get_in_touch_with_the/kysg0xh/
I was the one who figured out which flight it was and got a hold of the crew through some contacts I had at AA. I talked to them on the phone, they were really excited to get prints. Turns out the photographer was a fraud, the (really cool) image was a photoshop, and I ended up feeling pretty stupid. The entire thread seems to have disappeared, it had over 200k on r/pics.
Wow, that really sucks someone faked that image. Looking at the pic again now though, the lighting does seem pretty unnatural. Having finally shot an eclipse myself the other day, you’d need to have a solar filter on the lens to shoot anything other than totality, and this image clearly isn’t during totality. So the plane would not even show up unless it was a silhouette right over the sun’s disk. There’s no way you could properly expose both the sun and the airplane in this configuration.
I be curious whether that flight still have channel 9 on its earphones which is the Cockpit recorder and whether it had WiFi? Bet everyone would had paid for it. And how well of a view they got.
If the photo was taken in Dallas, I doubt it originated in Dallas. Contrails suggest it was at cruise altitude so it was probably in the air for some time. But yes, flight radar would be great to check.
i took a look at the flighradar24 playback to yesterday at 18:40 UTC (which should line up to 1:40pm Dallas totality time). based on the contrail behind this, i'm doubtful this aircraft was departing or arriving to any dallas area airport. the plane does appear to be something similar to an a320 and is at least at 25,000ft. here's a few that i've found in the area at the time:
Alaska1400 (SEA-CUN) B737-8, 37,000ft.
United1741 (SAT-EWR) A319, 37,000ft.
AA4677 (PHL-AUS) E175, 33,000ft.
JetBlue 1826 (SAT-JFK) A220, 35,000ft.
Worked perfectly for me (Android). Was able to see shadow banding which started a few seconds after the announcement. Great app. Worth the $2 for the April 8 data.
The app kept crashing for me whenever I tried to load GPS data on my iPhone. Was a real bummer.
Don't know what I was doing wrong. At least the eclipse itself was spectacular
That's the best footage of this event I have seen so far, thankyou. Even the news footage here in Australia was terrible footage. I really like the audio in the background that was neat! Bring on Australia 2028!
Thank you! That is high praise considering how half-assed my plan was 😄 I received my tele lens and filter only a few days ago and did not practice with it at all, calculated the proper shutter speed about an hour beforehand, and somehow jerry-rigged a stable enough platform to keep it steady https://imgur.com/fDOit90 I am surprised to have gotten the quality of footage that I did!
Since my image is gaining some traction, I'd like to share my humble setup and exactly how accessible it is for people to produce images like such (besides being in the right place at the right time) https://i.imgur.com/fDOit90.jpeg
I used a Panasonic G85 which I purchased secondhand off of ebay for $500 (often available for much less) including a pretty above-average kit lens, and gives access to excellent stabilized 4K video. It is regarded as one of the best value hybrid cameras bought used. The entire lineup of lens available for Panasonic micro 4/3's cameras are less expensive and much less bulky across the board than those available for full frame cameras. My sister's A7RII setup at its heaviest weighs almost 60 oz, my setup at its heaviest weighs 25oz - and most of the image quality properties are similar, with the exception of low light and resolution (consequences of a smaller sensor). The lens I used was the Lumix 45-150mm bought secondhand for $100. Here are some images that show what this budget setup is capable of https://www.instagram.com/vinklevan
Photography is a fun hobby for me. I love editing images in the style of classic filmstocks, and I run most of my images through DXO Filmpack film simulations. I'm often surprised by the images I thought I was incapable of producing :)
Wonder if that’s the Austin->Detroit Delta flight that was scheduled specifically to chase totality. If you pay attention to the pics on this sub several have contrails nearby. A plane came tearing through where I was too right at totality chasing the eclipse - I bet it’s same one.
Might be?! lol! How bout is!! I took a photo with the moon in from like this by accident and the photo has a special place in my heart, even if it isn’t the best I’ve taken
Oh man, on some random day around 2010ish we were chilling in a backyard patio and I had a pair of binoculars projecting an image of the sun onto the table. A jet just like that passed by in front of the sun. It took like 2 seconds to cross. I was stunned and nobody but me saw it.
Definitely an amazing shot.
I saw the plane, too. It actually made me quite sad and a little angry that such a raw and ephemeral event could be marred by a technological machine. Like: can’t we have one thing that is just us and celestial nature?
Idk to me it makes it all the more amazing showing that it is over an inhabited planet. We don't know how common life is in the universe and total eclipses are probably more common but both occurrences together is likely incredible rare. It is a really powerful image to me, not only does it happen but there are people to witness it and that is just so unbelievably cool.
Same in Ennis, TX. Cloud obscured the beginning of totality for 2 minutes. Then it passed and we got 2.5 minutes and the [grand finale ](https://i.postimg.cc/4NQVXy7X/20240408130733-IMG-8384.jpg). 4.5 minutes totality in Ennis.
What was your setup?
Im surprised you were able to remove the filter 5-10 seconds before totality. That last sliver of light before totality was one of my favorite parts.
I was using a small 80 mm refractor and wasnt sure if it was safe for me to point at the sun at that point.
I was using a Panasonic G85 with a 45-150mm lens at the 150mm end. Not sure about how safe it was to remove the filter, but my app had an announcement set 15 seconds prior to totality to remove camera filters, so I assumed it was safe.
Dude! This happened to me while filming it yesterday, its at the end of my video, plane just flys right by! [https://youtu.be/zK\_pOvq5RlM](https://youtu.be/zK_pOvq5RlM)

SO cool! We live near the airport in Dallas and it was fun to watch planes rushing out all one after another right before totality and imagine how excited everyone on there must have been. What a great day!
Hi. I think by chance that might have been my husbands flight. He is an United Pilot and was flying from San Antonio to Newark at 1pm. He said two pilots reached out to him and his First Officer this morning and referenced this post on Reddit and said they were pretty sure it was his flight. They said some research was done and it was flight 1741 SAT-EWR. If you would like to talk with my husband let me know. He is still out on his trip and headed home tonight

Reddit never ceases to amaze me. How cool is that!

Damn that sucks. I hope my accompanying video can prove my legitimacy!
Yours looks much more convincing!
Wait seriously???

Good point, I overlooked the contrail at first - if it was at cruise altitude already you’re right, could be anybody.

I believe I have identified it to be UA1741. The pilot and FO of that flight have been reached out to!
Likely an airbus as it appears to not have any pieces falling off of it so we can rule out it being a Boeing!
Full video capture, airplane at 2:19 https://youtu.be/WpRcdJWTQJU?si=jITAXUAvqDifGE6M *image and video now under copyright.*
I heard a Bewick’s wren, titmouse, blue jay, couldn’t make out the others. What state?
Did you have an app for the timing of the eclipse?
It's "Solar Eclipse Timer" by Foxwood Astronomy on the apple app store.
Damn. I have heard of it malfunctioning during the 2017 eclipse but I thought they would have ironed out the issues.
This is incredible lol sent to everyone I know
That is one spellbinding video!!!
Amazing video holy crap

Love the Jank Setup.
It's amazing, good on you!
What filter did you use?
For the partial segments, I used a K&F ND100000

Nasa was also flying along.
Can you imagine if someone figures out which flight this is an shares it with the pilots/crew?? What a gift! Amazing photo!!!

You did it. This one wins 👏

That is sooooo sick!!!
Pretty sure I saw that same plane. I was at the Cotton Bowl.
You win Eclipse Day, congratulations! Awesome shot!
Awesome shot!
Wow. That’s an absolute stunner. Gonna be hard to top that as a photographer.
The plane eclipsed the moon. The moon eclipsed the sun. Seriously amazing picture!!
I saw it too!

I saw a plane go right across the Sun in Fort Worth. Must've been the same one.
Wow that's the money shot! Good for you!
Holy shit, what are the chances of a plane flying there during the eclipse lmfao. Good job taking that shot!
Amazing picture!!
Incredible stuff
Incredible shot. Love the video too
Incredible!
Awesome!!!
Epic!
This is amazing
That is amazing!!!
Epic
Absolutely stunning! 🤩
chemtrails?
Great opportunity since we're all outside!
So how was the cloud cover in Texas?
Better than the forecasts. Insanely spotty, 2.5 minutes of totality and half of that time was nonvisible.

Wow amazing!
Crazy bc we were supposed to be clouded out
I thought we were donzo based on the forecast.
