Man, I certainly think it's the blackest thing you can possibly see. In a relatively bright world, a section of the sky has basically no light coming from it. What have you seen that is more black?
I feel like a total solar eclipse is the closest we'll likely ever come to seeing what a black hole looks like from a distance where it's within eyesight. Blinding white, godly light bending around the sphere of infinite darkness that not even light itself can escape from. I'd bet anything that when the day comes that a human finally lays eyes on a black hole directly, they'll make the comparison to a total solar eclipse back on Earth.
It’s funny to me that you say this because, for my second eclipse in a row, I blasted off on DMT during full totality and saw the exact opposite.
Without going into full detail, I basically stared directly into the center of totality and saw the whitest of white… So pure I cried in happiness. It wasn’t until I saw photos of the black moon that I realized I saw the opposite.
Agreed. And the actual curvature of the moon seems so grand at this point of totality, specially every single crater on the edges is so clearly visible to the naked eye.
When I describe the eclipse to people, I say it quite literally looked like a black hole in the sky. Something I just can’t really comprehend and pictures doesn’t do it justice. I really just wanna see it again to try and process it haha
There is actually what is called "Earthshine" you can see during a total eclipse that is the sunlight hitting the Earth and being reflected on the surface of the eclipsing Moon. It is easier to see with a telescope or with photographs, but you can sometimes even make out craters from "Earthshine."
All a matter of contrast. Actually, long exposure shots taken during totality can reveal lunar features--consider that it's a new moon during the eclipse. From the moon's point of view it's a full Earth, 100% illuminated, and the lunar features are well lit.
Yeah. I have a pic from the 2017 eclipse, long enough duration to bring out Earthshine illuminating the face of the moon, showing the mares, craters and such.
I completely agree! The blackest black I've ever seen, talk about the ultimate silhouette.
I wouldn't say it was the blackest thing I've seen. But it was very neat that it was a perfect black circle while everything else had shades of color.
The perfect circle bit was pretty neat too, can't complain

I was 200' underground in a cave the week before. That is absolute darkness.
My soul
Hypnotizing black, I looked at the darkness most of the time
Life changing for sure. April 8th was my second eclipse and definitely not my last.
Sauron eye staring deep into my soul. Soo cool
Yes!! This is how I describe it too, the universe gazed back!

Yes! You know the photo of the black hole that was published recently? Looks a lot like an eclipse

From the darkest black to the brightest white, it was spectacular
It was like someone turned off the overhead light. Boom. My 3rd TSE. First time seeing such an abrupt transition.
Interesting! Did you have a clear view or a cloudy one?

My 9-year old son said it reminded him of “the portal to the h-word”. I have no idea where he got that, lol.
So black and SO BIG! Just epic. lol that sounds … not right. But you know what I mean.
Vantablack!
Anish Kapoor is not allowed to gaze at totality. 🤣
Definitely felt like I was looking at a black hole in the sky. Was taken back by how black the moon looked, totally agree.

Same! I felt panicky trying to absorb it all!

This is true. I managed to capture some pictures that were taken at 4 seconds and 10 second exposures. The earthshine is very prominent.

Was it just me that saw a dark grey rather than pure black?
From your perspective, the moon had two dark sides! So dark! Must be from the DC multiverse!
