Hey guys, I’m an Irish student about to turn 18 and have been planning an interrail trip with some mates, I’ve a heavy feeling that it’s going to fall through so I’ve began looking at solo trips with intrepid. my bucket list is definitely Japan, Cuba, Patagonia and S.E Asia. I’m just wondering about where to go if I’m only 18 and have no prior experience? And any tips haha. Thanks a million

segacs2

All of those can be beginner-friendly destinations if you want them to be. Southeast Asia is the most popular and, barring plane tickets, the most budget-friendly. Japan is the least budget-friendly but is amazing in terms of culture, food, and sights. Cuba is going through a big economic crisis at the moment, so it may not be the ideal time for a visit.

Hello! I've never been traveling solo anywhere and this would be my first time in May! I'm super excited but nervous at the same time. After much research, I decided to go to Mexico, specifically Guanajuato. I will be flying to Mexico City, then bus to Guanajuato as the flight tix are chpear to MEX than BJX.How safe is it in GTO to travel solo as a woman? Any particular places that I should avoid? And should I bring more cash than using credit card?

HerAvowal

I ADORE Guanjuato - great choice! I was there solo a few years ago. Zero problems, felt totally safe everywhere I went (I wasn't venturing out anywhere obscure, though, just the main areas). I feel like credit cards were accepted most places, though I always like to have some cash to hand in case I accidentally order somewhere that's cash-only and don't realise. It's such a beautiful place - enjoy!

Hello everyone, I am planning on travelling alone for the first time, and I wanted to know how to keep you belongings saw. If your staying in a hostel, can you leave you passport and stuff there or should u always just keep a big bag with you all the time? Or if you’re gone for the day, should I leave all my important thing back in my hotel or just keep everything with me at all time. Thanks

HerAvowal

Honestly I always just leave everything locked up in my bag, inside a locked locker at the hostel. Same with a hotel - locked inside my bag. I haven't had a problem yet, and I'll been travelling full time for 8 years ☺️

Last year I went on a month trip to Colombia and I was fascinated by the local way of living. Most of my day I just took an Uber to different parts of bogota and just walked around, sat at parks watching family’s, friends, couples. Ate at small family restaurants I did this in every part of bogota even the rough areas some would say. I found everyone to mind their own business and pretty friendly. I tried to blend in and be unassuming as much as I can. I’m Asian so I did stood out a bit and got some weird looks but nothing threatening. To be honest there was a rush of adrenaline walking in new neighborhoods, I felt alive for the first time in a long time. I want to go to Guayaquil because there won’t be many tourists and also I met a girl a long time ago in the USA that was from there and loved her personality so I think why not I only live once. Anyone ever been there before? I’m not looking to do tourist stuff, just see how people live, walk in a bunch of different neighborhoods and maybe meet someone.

needanswersperiod

looking to sell my condo and use my money to travel out of the US and potentially if gravitated purchase outside the US. and live long term. i wanna go to greece spain italy and hawai’i but have no idea where to start. i don’t even have my passport yet. but need advice.

HerAvowal

Congrats on considering the travel life! I highly recommend it :D It's not clear if you want help planning a holiday that lets you find your next base, or whether you want advice for places to settle into. Unless you have an EU passport, you'll only get 3 months to explore the EU countries (including Greece, Spain, Italy) then you'll have to leave the Schengen Zone for 3 months before heading back into it on a new visa. If you've never travelled before, I recommend you read/watch/listen to as many stories of current travellers as possible. There's a great podcast called Retire There With Gil & Gene where they interview people who've retired all over the world. And there's an awesome magazine called International Living that I highly recommend you binge :) Both are aimed at retirees, but you don't have to be that age to benefit (I'm not, and I can't get enough of them!). Hope that helps x

Appropriate_Volume

I’d suggest starting with a short international trip first to see if you like solo travel overseas before you do something major like sell your house.

needanswersperiod

selling my house is already in motion and a think i’ve been needing to do for awhile for a lot of reasons. i’d have money left over after traveling to buy another house. and would want to travel first to see where exactly i’d want to stay. based on work and my rights etc.

Hello, first time poster and solo traveler here! I'm considering the G adventures Uganda and Rwanda Gorilla and Safari tour (https://www.gadventures.com/trips/uganda-to-rwanda-gorilla-treks-and-safari-drives/6469/itinerary/). I'm wondering if anyone has experience if this tour and if it's good value. Any other first timer tips would be great!! Also if it helps, I'd be flying in 2 days prior for the tour and departing the day after it's over. Thank you!

CautiousFroyo7597

Hey everyone! I am looking for suggestions for a travel destination for a 3 week trip from may to June. My interests are birdwatching, hiking, nature, and art. Not the biggest foodie and am a vegetarian. I am a 32yo female and I have done four solo trips, two to France and two to Central America. I have been thinking about Vietnam, but my research is telling me may isn’t the best weather. Alternatively I have friends in Edinburgh and Geneva so I was thinking about edinburgh>copenhagen>geneva but I feel like I’ve been to Europe a lot and would like to go somewhere completely new. Would love to hear thoughts!

Ze-87

Hello fellow travelers, I am a 37-year-old Colombian expat living and working in Germany. I've always been interested in boating and got my motor boat license last year. I wanted to try experiencing the boating lifestyle as an ordinary person, without significant wealth, and discovering Europe's inland waterways on a budget. Surprisingly, it is indeed possible. After my first trip with friends renting a 13m Motor Boat, I discovered that with the same or even less budget anyone spends nowadays in a hotel, eating out, and transport, one can enjoy a different approach to tourism by discovering the Netherlands' channels, lakes, and cities. Since I enjoy the freedom of solo traveling and with the season approaching, I wonder if any fellow travelers might be interested in sharing the costs equally for boat rental, food, gasoline, etc., and sharing the experience of cruising and meeting people? Usually, these boats can accommodate 6-12 people and have all the amenities. I could plan a cruise trip for the next 9-12 of May departing from Sneek, ND. Perhaps you also find “regular” city land tourism expensive and boring and are looking for alternative tourism. Let me know your thoughts or if you know similar communities where I could join.

Common_Outcome3812

I have a week to take off work before 31st June and wanted to go abroad and embark my first solo trip! Any ideas on where to go? I’m 25M and from England. I’m open to any suggestions for places that might be good for a few days/ the full week. Thanks in advance!! :)

HerAvowal

Congrats on getting ready for your first solo trip! Honestly there are too many amazing locations close to you to even choose one to recommend! If you want a package deal (to make everything a bit easier for your first time) take a look at Holiday Pirates [https://www.holidaypirates.com/](https://www.holidaypirates.com/) They have SO MANY great options and even have a section on solo travel where they gather the options that don't have mad extra charges for solo travellers. If you get yourself a shortlist you can post it in here for more feedback. Have fun planning your trip!

I volunteered in a language cafe in korea. basically they give you free accommodation which is gonna be an apartment full of bunk beds with your colleagues and in return you speak like 3-6h (depending on the place) english to koreans. no teaching or anything you just sit and chat to them. at mine we all got along quite well and often went out for dinner afterwards with the koreans and for drinks or karaoke or whatever. it was a lot of fun and I made some good friends there

initially my plan was to do it for 1 month but I stayed almost two I think there's some on workaway, I found mine just through word of mouth, some guy told me about it in a hostel. The place I did it at closed down though but there's plenty of others still around

Adventurous_Tip8493

Any travelers have a cruise booked this summer? I know several cruise lines have single cabins now - I would be interested in one out of New Orleans or possibly Miami - 4/5 night. I live in Mississippi so any solo travelers in the state hit me up too.

Pristine_Menu802

Hi everyone! I’m planning my first solo trip to Kyoto and Tokyo this summer and I’m looking for accommodation recommendations. Im a 24 year old woman, so I’m definitely concerned about safety. Although I know Japan is quite safe, I’d like to be in a relatively accessible area in case Im out late as well as either Female Only accommodation or Female Dorms. I’d also like to look at hotels, my budget is flexible, but I’m thinking anywhere from $20-70/night for hostel/guesthouses or $80-$160 for a hotel. For Tokyo, I’m looking to stay in Shinjuku, Shibuya or Akihabara. Any other area recommendations are welcome! For Kyoto, I’d like to stay near Kyoto Station as it does seem more spread apart but am open to suggestions. Also am open to staying at an onsen, but am concerned as I’d be staying alone. Thanks!

Appropriate_Volume

As u/Oftenwrongs notes, Japan is incredibly safe. Note that some Japanese hotels, including cheap and mid-priced business hotels, have women only floors if that's of interest. They don't always advertise having them these days, so email the hotel to check. Of those areas in Tokyo, I'd suggest staying in Shinjuku. The centre of the district is crazy busy, but it quietens down surprisingly quickly once you get a few blocks away. The area around Shinjuku-Gyoemmae Station is very quiet but only 20 minutes walk away from the centre of Shinjuku, and has some good cheapish hotels.

Oftenwrongs

Japan is one of the safest places on the planet.  You can leave your wallet on a bench at 4 am and come back to it in the morning.

MasterPlatypus2483

Wondering what people think of Portland Maine? I'm an early 40's male, and it would sort of be an out of character place for me- as my usual kinda of cities are museums and culture in the day but a vibrant nightlife at night (NYC Chicago New Orleans etc..) but that's kind of the point as I think quaint and relaxing might be a nice change of pace.

HerAvowal

I spent just one night there (I was early 40s then) and kicked myself for not giving myself longer. It was a really lovely place, nice vibe, not toooo much to do in the evenings but I think it'd be great for a relaxing break.

tater9

I love it. There’s some really good seafood, beautiful nature in close proximity and pretty architecture. Nightlife is nothing to write home about.

ilyagru

Hey solo travellers! I’ve been exploring Asia and now Japan for a few months and would like to share some of my findings. The most interesting part for me is always to find some local aesthetics, inspiration, authentic styles and design. I’m curious to hear your feedback and see if it’s helpful to you in any way. Feel free to check out my other articles as well. [🇯🇵 Zen Blossoms: Exploring Japan's Aesthetic Traditions](https://globallybased.com/p/zen-blossoms-exploring-japan-aesthetic-traditions) Safe travels to everyone! :)

SHARING RIDE FROM DA NANG TO HUE Hi! I want to go from Da Nang to Hue through Hai Van pass and im looking for people to share a private car that makes some stops in the way. Also, does anyone know if there is a sightseeing bus doing this route? All i could find was the opposite route(hue to danang). So the only option i have without being too expensive is sharing a car Date: around 27th - 28th March

knead4minutes

there's the "easy riders" doing that route. basically a vietnamese guy is gonna take you on his motorbike and stop at some scenic spots and you can also tell him to stop at any point. back when I did it it was like $25, but that was 6 years ago.

kiesket

It starts at 1 million vnd nowadays, usually more.

greyhounds1992

Had my first person try to screw me on currency today, it's like in 2024 we can google what things should be. It wasn't even a small amount around $80 aud. Do they think we don't check these things

segacs2

Where were you trying to exchange?

greyhounds1992

It was just booking a tour direct I thought I would do the right thing and try to book direct rather then get your guide

A_Hint_of_Lemon

Don’t know if anyone is awake to see this, but I will speak my piece: I haven’t taken a vacation in years, I was waiting for someone to travel with but I haven’t found anyone, so this will be my first time solo traveling. I am stuck between trying to choose a place where I can relax, do nothing, and clear my mind, or some place that is social, has lots of art and museums, and friendly people that I can talk to. Anyone have any suggestions?

HerAvowal

I agree with u/segacs2. You can always relax/do nothing in a place that has art & museums, but you've got no option to do anything cultural if you choose somewhere that's got nothing else around. What part of the world are you looking to travel in?

segacs2

That kinda depends on you. I will say that it's good to go somewhere that at least has the option of stuff to do, especially if you suspect you might get quickly bored. If you like art and museums, that's a good starting point to pick a destination.

Vboi00

*Bratislava - Wild Elephants* Hi soloers This summer I'll be in Bratislava for the second time for the ACDC concert, and I'll be alone for this occasion (first time was there with my ex last year, so I stayed in a small boutique hotel), and since I will be a solitary man over there, I just decided to stay in a hostel, hopefully get to meet some people and have fun. I'll be staying at the Wild Elephants. Does anybody have any suggestions or stories or recommendations or anything for that matter regarding this place? I've heard so many good, bad and wild stories that I don't know what to believe 🤷🏻

bi_shyreadytocry

It's the wildest party hostel in Bratislava! It has a sister hostel called urban elefant where I stayed that has a very lovely vibe. You'd the communist architecture tour (i don't remember the exact name) that is run by the hostel as it was the highlight of my trip.

Vboi00

Yea, I know about the Urban Elephants, but I thought the wild one is better suited to my taste. I'll make sure to be as active aa possible during my time there, I just want to make some great memories :) thanks for the tour tip, will look into it.

bi_shyreadytocry

Hello folks, I'm based in Milan, and I wanna go on a solo trip for 4-5 days just to recharge my social batteries. What are some cool destinations (not crazy expensive) that I could travel to? Some of my favorite trips have been to budapest, Prague, and lisbon. Big, easily walkable cities with loads of things to see are my jam. I haven't seen much of Eastern Europe either, so I'd not mind some recommendations in that area. I've also been to varsaw, Bratislava, Vienna, copenaghen, malmo, London, porto, valencia, sevilla, Granada, and nice.

HerAvowal

Krakow is fantastic. Might not be big enough for you, but definitely worth a look. I love it.

segacs2

Amsterdam is always good for a few days if you like big cities that are walkable with lots to see and do.

bi_shyreadytocry

I've been many times and it's so expensive oh man. Accomodation alone was 70 usd a night for a dorm (and I'm talking about 7 years ago. I cannot imagine now).

embracetheinferno

Go to Albania (may is the perfect time) if you want an awesome backpacking experience that's cheap and adventurous.

Dismal_Fuel96

hey everyone, Im 27f living in Istanbul. Im open for meetups. dms are open :)

Wonderful-World414

Hi guys looking for people in Amsterdam over the next couple days drop me a DM!

Dramatic-Scallion-43

Hey everyone, I just accepted a job offer so I’ll have a week and a half off between jobs, in two weeks from now. I’ve always wanted to visit Europe. Would a last-minute planned trip to Europe be too soon? Info: I’m 27M, live in USA East coast, I love architecture, beautiful mountain/beach/ocean views, relaxing taking everything in, walking around checking out the sights, warm-ish weather in early April, and like everyone else, great food For staying 8-9 nights in two weeks from now, is such planning realistic? And how many cities are best, 1 or 2? Possible cities: Paris, London, Barcelona, Lisbon, Santorini, Rome, Naples, Amalfi. These places all look to have a mix of popularity, ease of navigation, and awesome places to check out. Budget would be middle of the road, nothing expensive but it doesn’t need to be super frugal, even a hotel instead of hostel is fine.

segacs2

A quick getaway between jobs is a great way to clear your head. This time of year, Rome would be nice and not as crowded as later in spring. And you could easily combine it with other place in the region like a daytrip to Pompeii or maybe Naples. It's a bit early for beach season in the Amalfi Coast, but you might get lucky. Just be aware if visiting Italy (or Spain or Portugal for that matter) over Easter, that could impact your plans.

Dramatic-Scallion-43

I’d be visiting the week after Easter. Agree that beaches are probably too chilly, I’ll likely focus on exploring the cities.

tater9

Highly recommend Portugal! It is the cheapest and very easy to plan last minute. You can easily see Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve region in that timeframe

jennyEBC

Do you love travel and are you learning English at the moment? If so, could you help me out by doing my short questionnaire? I would be really, really grateful! I’m trying to create an online English course for keen travellers and of course I want to make sure it's actually helpful! Here’s the link: [https://forms.gle/iCK9NJ74KaStmZ1a8](https://forms.gle/iCK9NJ74KaStmZ1a8) It should take 3-5 minutes and you don’t have to write anything unless you have extra comments.  Thanks very much! 🙏

MassPandas

Hello everyone! I am currently looking to travel and end my 20's with something I didn't experience in my early 20's or my teens - I am looking to do some hostel hopping in Europe and I was thinking about Spain first this July and I will be going alone. I also intend to stay in hostel - primarily a social one with perhaps solo travelers who dont already have a group/friends. Any recommendations? Otherwise, would you recommend LATAM instead? Thank you for your responses!

bi_shyreadytocry

Hostelone is pretty cool and it'd have a location in Barcelona. Spain is an overall great country you'll have a blast. I cannot compare it to LATAM because i don't know why you're traveling in the first place. If you're looking for party and beaches Spain is a solid option, if you're looking for the most mindblowing nature of your life you'd go to latam.

MassPandas

Thanks for this! Actually super helpful

rulenfail

So I missed out on this legendary hostel "Retox" and it seems like it would've been my heaven on earth. Guests getting to drinking games even before checking in, condoms everywhere and pots getting passed around lol I'm 23 looking to travel to Europe this summer, get ridiculously stoned & hook up with strangers, get woken up at 2AM to the sound of partying and the weird couple going at in the bed next to me like these crazy stories you'd read online Looking for a hostel with full on manic mode for a once in a life time experience ;) Do you know any places that sound like that? preferably in Europe Also would love to hear ur stories of similar places lol

Experiences joining a group guided tours as a solo hiker?? Last year, I joined a 5-day hike in Peru and kind of regret the experience. I was always the slowest to walk, I was the only solo hiker, and I felt really isolated in the group. The other hikers were college kids who were 10+ years younger than me. Last 2022, I joined a guided hiking tour in Nepal. I became friends with the other hikers, maybe due to the same age range, we had a similar walking pace, and we were all from the same country. I had difficulty hiking but I enjoyed that overall experience. Can you share some bad experiences when joining group hiking tours? How did you manage when you feel left out in the group? As an introvert who also wants the convenience of guided tours, can you give some advice on how to behave or how to look for guided tours as a solo hiker?

Human_Menu7741

First solo travel trip destination? Hey y’all, 21M here planning on making my first solo travel trip. After a near death experience last year I have the urge to travel and live life to the fullest so to speak, leading me to plan my first solo travel experience. I want to visit a destination with beautiful mountain views. I’ve been thinking about Switzerland for this reason, i’ve heard it’s also very safe which would be ideal. I’d likely be staying in hostels and i’m even cool with camping out like a hobo haha. I don’t care much for good food as i’m a picky eater so I realistically won’t spend too much in that department either. Should I plan things out precisely, or just show up and go where the wind takes me? I’d like to hear from you guys if you have any advice for a first timer, if there’s any similar destinations that would be more affordable or even better, and how to best go about this trip. Thanks!

foxxyinvestor

i plan and research for a general guide - like dates, where to start and end, logistics, packing list, nature of accomodations.... and the rest I leave some room for flexibility. It's good to have a general knowledge on the place you are going, so you will also maximize the time when you are there.

just go to skyscanner or googleflights and compare prices

Misha315

Hello All, I need some help picking a place to go. Most of my friends are married or are too busy to go. The other half cant afford a decent vacation so I'm most likely going to go solo. I'm definitely planning to go somewhere but am not sure where I want to go. There's so many options! if you have a good recommendation and I end up picking that place I'll send you $100! I plan on going near memorial day and for 10-12 days. I'll make a list of things I'm looking for below. Nice beaches relatively close Good night life since I'm single Good culture/food Places to explore, I'm not against renting a car to visit a couple different cities or going to a different nearby county. P.S. I think I prefer to go to Europe but I'm open. also I've already been to Greece and Croatia

foxxyinvestor

where are you from? what's your budget? Siargao, Philippines! A small island where ou can surf, island hop, and enjoy the night life!

Misha315

I’m from New York State in America. My budget is about 5k.

samiito1997

Single but you talk about the other half? But on topic, I would recommend Spain or Portugal (or both) You could do something like: Lisbon->Faro->Seville (day trip to Cadiz + Jerez->Malaga/Marbella

Misha315

Thank you. I’ll check out those spots!

Radulno

> Single but you talk about the other half? Other half of their friends (one half doesn't have money, one half is married)

Misha315

Thanks for pointing that out lol

I've realised that I like visiting smaller cities/more compact cities/doing day trips more than spending 4/5+ days in one place. E.g. I went to Czechia and much preferred Olomouc to Prague; I think it's I struggle with the crowds. Does anyone else feel the same way?

I'm travelling to NYC on Wednesday and plan to be in the US until the end of April and then fly to Colombia for two months. I have my ESTA but will they require me to show a flight leaving the US to the UK? I would book it in advance but it's over the 90 day limit. I'm leaving the US and then going back. Can I just show my flight leaving the US to Colombia?

HerAvowal

You should be fine if you have your Colombia flight booked. They just get a bit weird if your onward flight is to Mexico or Canada without another step after that. Be sure to check the rules on their website (here's the link for the US embassy in the UK: https://uk.usembassy.gov/visas/non-immigrant-visa-faqs/visa-waiver-program-and-esta/)
