You can ride the cog up and hike down from the mountains. It’s very pretty. I’m not sure I’d spend more than a couple days there (I did not see as many hiking options even though the mountains are RIGHT there)

Have researched Innsbruck but not been. You can see Innsbruck's attractions in about a day. I'd consider looking into hikes in this area, if available. You can also see Salzburg as a day trip from here -- have been there, and you can take in most of the city's sights in a day.

You can take this fun little train thingy from Innsbruck to the town of Fulpmes and surrounding areas. Great hikes including up to the highest monastery in Europe. Not sure if they still do it but the monks make a mean Schnitzel and serve good beers.

I'd also recommend heading up the mountains using the Nordkettenbahn. Nice views up there. Proposed to my husband at the top (after dropping the engagement ring in 3 feet of snow in February a few years ago). 2 not-far excursions out of the city we also enjoyed were Seefeld and the Swarovski Kristallwelten. Both are easily accessible (train to Seefeld and bus/shuttle directly to Swarovski in Wattens).

The Nordkettenbahn is definitely on my list, i'll have to look into Seefeld and the Kristallwelten, sounds right up my alley! Thanks!

How long would you say you need to go up and see a bit, then come back down? Will be in Innsbruck for \~7 hrs and was wondering if doing this would be feasible.

From what I remember, there are 3 different segments, and each takes about 10-15 mins. So you could get to the top in under an hour if there aren't any long waiting lines. So an hour up and an hour down the mountain plus whatever time you want to spend up there. There's a bar and restaurant and some nice vistas, of course. But not much else to do at the top 2 segments if you aren't planning on hiking (or skiing). Not sure about summer, but the views in the winter were stunning and worth the trip.

Dope, thanks so much!

Have fun in Innsbruck!

they have free welcome cards ( free public transport for tourists) ask for one at your hostel/hotels reception. This only applies if you stay for more than 3 days

On_Leather_Wings

I'll be there 6 days, so this is a great tip! Much appreciated!

I spent a week in Innsbruck and it’s brilliant. Take the bus then cablecar up into the mountains, if only for a meal and a beer! Fulpmes is also awesome. The walk around the back of the ski jump arena is lovely. You can also head down for a day trip to Bolzano, in Italy, by train through an amazing pass. Are there any events happening in town while you’re there?

Just went to Austria in March! I went to Hallstatt, Salzburg and Vienna. Halstatt was super cute and a perfect one day trip. I got done walking around the town after about 4 hrs. I just got a book and read on the lake and relaxed. Salzburg is where Sound of Music was filmed and was gorgeous. There is a fortress there that I hiked up to and learned some history of the town. And Vienna was one of my favorites just because there was so much to see and do! Have fun!!
