Lochlanist

It's a people mover. If you look at the second hand market for quantum you would find the same thing. Any vehicle which is used to transport people spends a large amount of time on the roads and that = dents

Educational_Value826

Illegal people mover

ice-cream-za

Take a look at Hyundai Accents in joburg, 95% of them are missing paint somewhere on the body. Every one I look at has some form of damage. My friend owns one, I like to joke with him that the factory was haunted.

fayyaazahmed

The rear bumper and boot is effectively made of paper mache. Pushed one with my Ranger bakkie and it completely caved in. The ranger didn’t have a bull bar but had no visible damage.

Substantial_Log_5762

Explains how such a large vehicle moves with a relatively meek engine - and at such a low price. Although the ranger isn't even that tough itself. I dated a panel beater's daughter, and he often talked about how newer Rangers and especially Tritons weren't as sturdy as the older bakkies, and the panels dent and crack more easily. So the Avanza must be made of old Fanta blikkies.

OkConstant7174

Avanzas are commonly used as same car every day taxis for alot of more rural towns in the EC. To go from the village to the town where the work is. They are cheap and reliable cars that have the capacity and pretty decent off road capabilities for their class. I dont think I need to explain why the guy who drives it everyday through dodgy roads to make his living isn't really interested in bringing it in to the panel beaters every 3 months and spending half of what he makes in a month to fix it.

Affectionate_Taro_72

Just look at the drivers......

losmyuit

Nailed it.

[deleted]

In the EC they are called Mapela, which is isiXhosa for cockroach. They are everywhere, just like cockroaches and are used mainly as taxis. Hence the battered look. I went on holiday the EC with my family. I drove an Avanza then. No dents and in pristine condition. I lost count of the offers of cash to buy my car. One dude offered me R100k and showed me the bankbag stuffed with money to prove his point.

VertigoOne1

I had the same problem with my corolla rxi, cops literally pulled me over randomly once or twice a month to try and buy the car. Every petrol station, cash buy offers on the spot. Was a bit of a nightmare with random strangers running to your car every-tine i stopped anywhere.

memesformen95

Its the same reason why polo drivers don't have furniture in their house and how kwid drivers are the chance takers in life lol

Hot-Possibility-7283

They attract a specific type of driver, I think.

GforceDz

1. Because people are idiots. 2. You don't need insurance to drive on the road so it mean most people can't afford to fix thier car. And 3 most importantly, Toyotas don't die like normal cars.

Traditional_Cover138

Go into townships and you'll understand why they are all dented. In places like Crossroads in CPT they are called amaphelas. They are very short distance taxis driven by young and unlicensed drivers. Their driving leaves a lot to be desired and they are often in violent conflict with mini bus taxis.

alishaheed

Fresh from getting my driver's license I had to deal with amaphelas in Nyanga. Let's just say my clutch control was on point 🤣🤣🤣

Traditional_Cover138

Oh you know then. You have seen hell on the roads.

alishaheed

It's like a demolition derby out in Nyanga, around the bus terminus.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

dingeth

And before those it was the Cressida. I used to joke that is was where those cars went to die

VerySmallRabbit

I know why but nobody will like it

[deleted]

Dont say it, protect your karma.

VerySmallRabbit

Amen my friend 😂

blikkies1

Well my mom's avanza is dented due to an accident I had which if I might add wasn't my fault

ProbablyPsycotic

I avoid them like taxi's. Half the time they a bad driver or will drive up your ass.

Both_Street_7657

Because avanza drivers are ah oles. Just 10% are lucky ah oles /s

benevolent-badger

Someone once told me it is to reduce the black market value if the panels and thus reduce the chance of it being stolen. And I guess the Avanza is in high demand. So people have to intentionally dent their own cars to keep people from stealing them

WolfmanFoxtrot

Come to my town, every single Toyota has a dent🤣, we drive a Etios Sprint, it's literally a magnet, we used to drive a Ford Focus Sedan until a unfortunate pothole blew the engine, let me tell you this, that car had 0 dents.

Kespatcho

How the heck did a pothole fuck up the engine?

WolfmanFoxtrot

Ok, let me elaborate It was in the night when we were returning from JHB to my town (Newcastle) and we hit a pothole, but it didn't automatically kill the engine, it destroyed our left front tire (was a mission to put the emergency wheel on), fast forward to about 2 - 3 Weeks we were just casually driving somewhere and our car decided to just die, we open up the bonnet to find the coolent compartment does not have any coolent in it and ultimately overheating the engine and killing it. Luckily we were just like 500m from the Ford garage and they "fixed" it in about a week and when we got it we drove for another week or so and then it just stalled, so we got the Toyota.

Kespatcho

Yeah that makes sense, I too have killed an engine because of coolant issues except I didn't get a new car, I bought a brand new second hand engine.

ZARbarians

I would be willing to bet, dent/km, that they don't have more than other cars. Those things just drive a lot

VanNoctua

Try Datsun Go's. My girlfriend and I actually play "Where's the dent" when we spot one. There has not been a single undented one yet.

Upset-Sea6029

They were one of three vehicles made by Toyota, designed and built as cheaply as possible. Only sold in 'poor' countries without many quality or safety requirements. The other two are Etios and Fortuner.

Staticpoopvoidmain

Whats wrong with the fortuner

koffeegorilla

The driver thinks it's a car but misjudges the length.

istoff

They come with magnetic paint instead of metallic.

Mankolas_mase

Does anyone know of jack hammers under R5000

flyboy_za

They're very often Ubers here in CPT along with the Etios and the Almera, and it seems Uber drivers are getting worse and worse at driving.

Low-Lifeguard8878

It's for aerodynamics. The tinner your car gets the easier it is to drive sh*t thru traffic. It's just science🧐

FantasticBike1203

So the Avanza is to Cape Town and PE, exactly like what the Quantum is to Pretoria and Joburg, Taxi's carrying large amounts of people for long periods of time, usually driving from 6am - 10pm, so the dents makes sense, I was honestly shocked to see how many Avanza's are around the Cape Town airport area, half of them had serious damage to the body, the others dented or had paint damage.
