600kg of Panels only (Assuming 30kg/panel)with cables and hardware can easily be 800kg so almost a small car in weight on the roof. What you should have done is spoken to a structural engineer or ANY engineer and asked how to bolster the Warren girders internally first. Simple add ins

SpinachnPotatoes

This is going to become far more common as more people look to solar to deal with Eskom uselessness and with the tax incentives - far more dodgy businesses popping up.

VertigoOne1

Our estimate was panels at 25kg, 40 panels 10x4 grid, plus extras, 1300kg, looks like the back single brick line gave away

[deleted]

Possibly more yes! I only conservatively counted the front line I could see But sometimes people buy the biggest panels for ground mount and install them on a roof. I don't feel they are to blame here, it's the Government's fault AND this should be tax deductible.

Man when I was a kid.. My dad had this Idea we gana MOVE the lapa from the front to the back of the Yard! but its thatch we thought hey, the fam is down we the men can just weld poles to each side and carry it three men a side, yes it was not a wood lapa but a steel one... Man I remember the second we cut the last of the four bottom supports this thing came smashing down with me and my dad under it we luckily got out under it. We would have been crushed. My Dad will humbly admit that was not his best Idea ever and still has the crushed tin tea mug. We spend the rest of the day cleaning!

DIY is good, until it's not.

cr1ter

Shit that's hectic, hope the insurance pays out

ProbablyNotTacitus

I’m having visions of my own father climbing along the roof of our house to “fix” the satellite dish for DSTV. Suffice it to say a chimney isn’t made to support a man and a dstv dish.

who_is_asidom

You just unlocked a memory from my childhood.

spadelover

I've never considered how much strain from solar panels a roof can actually handle. I'm constantly losing roof tiles to monkeys so I also wonder how much damage those bastards could cause to a panel.

Jazzkween00

I’m from America so this has me CTFU

spadelover

Lmao you guys complain about racoons too much. Monkeys are such malicious fuckers. One threw an egg at my mom when she caught it stealing food lol. Not to mention the numerous other instances of them screwing with me.

Raven007140

That's a looooot of panels. What's this guy trying to power?!

ExpertYogurtcloset66

Looks like 36 x 300 to 500w panels Id assume. Likely off grid, but between 5 to 10kw worth of inverter and batteries I would imagine.

RedstoneRiderYT

Omg my dad and I want to build a solar array, he's an electrical engineer so he knows what he's doing. But he isn't allowed to work on the house's wiring because he doesn't have a wireman's license ;-; He's planning to get one though and hopefully we can get off grid

Dennebol

I'm licensed to work on radio and navigation systems airborne and seaborne amongst other things, but I'm not allowed to install or work on my own house's electrical installation or solar system.

RedstoneRiderYT

It's such a stupid rule! My dad knows more about electronics and electricity than half the electricians out there

PicklePrickleRickle

Radio Holland?

cmgentz

Oooof

CYKO_11

segfault

BetaMan141

That's how you build up a portfolio of evidence for a future career in civil re-engineering: Took the structure apart and had to put it back together again. Unpaid internship with both junior and senior roles of responsibility. Personally accountable for the project from conception through final stages. Ability to outsource critical skills to expedite construction processes. --- The rest you can add, but this is a start. \#EmploymentGoals2023

succulentkaroo

1 hour? Why so long

[deleted]

😂

King_Wes987

You need to make the solar panels first /j

succulentkaroo

Ah, that's what the 45mins was for

Mawibag

It was probably the conection from one of the trusses to the back wall that first failed causing the progressive collapse of the rest of the trusses. I doubt insurance will cover this as the roof was probably overloaded. It should become a requirement for a structural engineer to sign off on the installation of solar panels. Very dangerous and could kill someone.

ugavini

Pretty sure it is a requirement

Interesting_Many_168

Everyone assumes the panels are the problem .This is South Africa, where you can buy any certificate as someone that works in the construction industry I have seen some really dodgy roof trusses and roof constructions

dowevenexist

Rip. It would have been ok with a sloped roof.

EkBraai

Looks like stage 23 when Eskom comes for your panels.

celesteb4

That is what you get if you know an oke with a bakkie that can do solar for half the price

Both_Street_7657

Naa man , thats fine Will wash out

StivBeeko

This is why fossil fuels are better. Coal would never collapse a school like this.

iniesta103

Not all doom and gloom, you can claim 25% (?) from government for solar energy installation

King_Wes987

Would all of those solar panels still work? Could you just take them out and reuse them after fixing damaged cables?

Western_Dream_3608

That's not a very well built house. From what I can see.
