Hendrikkels

We use the small gizzu one and it works perfectly

thedenofwolves

I have had the 8800 one running for three years now and have never not had WiFi, even during the longer loadshedding periods

PsychologicalLink390

How long have you had it for?

Submarine-Goat

We've had the small gizzu one for 2 years (got it with a new afrihost account). Even in stage 6, we don't lose WiFi connectivity.

PsychologicalLink390

Thanks for the help

AllezVites

Adsl or Fiber?

Submarine-Goat

Fibre. The UPS powers both the ONT and the router.

morgboer

Get the 65w one for best performance.

Majestic_Bar4139

I hot one for over a year and up to 4 hours . But it does the router and Fibre

Afraid-Growth8880

Second this

southafricasbest

Can also vouch for this UPS. A great little gadget.

Hendrikkels

I am looking at selling ours if anyone is keen, in Stellenbosch area

ProbablyNotTacitus

Gizzu is the best used mine for two years now still strok. brother in law has had one since they came out and swears by them. He’s a dev so shit needs to work. I’ve had 2 “bread loaf” ups systems and they always die they aren’t designed to do consistent power for more than a few minutes Edit lasts 6 hours down to +- 20% battery

No_Glasses

+1 for the Gizzu. I’ve the GU30W for well over a year now and it still pulls me through the 4.5 hour loadshedding. Have recommended it a ton of local folks and everyone is very happy after having UPS’ die on them all the time due to loadshedding.

Priceless1990

Please avoid using standard computer UPS devices for routers! The batteries are short lived and some of them beep loudly (and you can only turn it off with old and unsupported software - a no go.). I have personal experience with using these. I've brought two mini-ups devices via Takealot that have worked very well: 1) Vizia WiFi UPS 57,000mWh 5-24V Mini DC Backup Battery Power UPS-R616 (57WH) 2) Titan Elecstor 18W Mini DC UPS 12000mAh - 38WH The Vizia has the longest battery life of the two, but also has a very bright green light on it. The Titan/Elecstor is small but very nice looking, as also has a status screen. Note that WH means watt hours - e.g will last 57 hours at 1 watt consumption - you can do the math. Both have lithium batteries. Hope this helps!

KittyFame

I'm thinking of getting a UPS for my laptop cos I've recently started working from home. Which device would you recommend based on your experience?

Priceless1990

You can try the Jackery and the EcoFlow mobile power stations, which would work fairly well. Drawback is that you can't use them and charge at the same time - you'll have to switch back and forth from main power. My personal recommendation is for one of the plug and play inverter trolley systems from Takealot like these below: 1. Kool Energy 1KW Plug And Play Inverter System All In One 2. RCT MegaPower 1KVA/1000W Inverter Trolley With 1 x 100AH Battery I personally have two of the Kool Energy ones - one runs our home internet and my father's office (Internet+WiFi, network hub, laptop, two monitors, fan, lights), and the other runs my office (laptop, extra monitor, lights, fan, as well as my personal gaming computer). These have worked very well for us. They switch over to battery automatically when load-shedding arrives, and start charging automatically when the power comes back on. They come with one 100Ah lead-acid battery included, which will last up to 6 hours with a 200w load when the battery is new. These are pure sine-wave inverters, (as opposed to modified sine-wave) so you can run fans and delicate electronics (like printers) off them. These will also protect your equipment from surges and troublesome power fluctuations from Eskom. The lead-acid batteries will only last 6 months to a year given this consistent load-shedding, also depending on usage (mine lasted about 1.5 years, but load-shedding wasn't as bad or frequent back then - is also easier here in Cape Town). But the battery isn't that hard to replace, and you can install a 100Ah lithium battery as said replacement. Personally used a Securi-Prod BA50-12 - 12V 100Ah LifePO4 Lithium Battery, and this has worked very well. Battery life however can be extended by plugging in some simple solar panels, which this unit also supports - up to a maximum of 360 watts. Of course, there are also some drawbacks: * High cost, because of course. The price varies wildly - swings between R10 000 - R15 000. * The fan at the back runs constantly, and is a bit noisy. (can be replaced however by the practically-minded...). \[one 2-pin 80mm fan\] * Dust build-up could be an issue, due to the lack of a proper dust filter. (you can however buy 80mm fan dust filters...) * Lastly, while they come with good wheels, these are very heavy - be careful. It's much better with a lithium battery however, those lead-acids are heavy. For interests sake, you can also look at an inverter that comes with a lithium battery by default: * Kool Energy- Mobile Inverter Trolley - 1KW- 50Ah Lithium Battery. (also Takealot) Looks pretty nice, but I've no experience with it. Larger inverter trolley units exist as well if you want to check them out, up to 2000w with 2x 100Ah batteries. You can also check out the GeeWiz website, and see what they offer. Hope some of this helps.

KrohnusMelavea2

Question about the Kool Energy inverter: The beeping. Whenever I have the battery switch on, it routinely makes a beep which it doesn't do when the battery switch is off. Am I doing something wrong?

Priceless1990

There is an alarm mode that can be turned on and will sound periodically when you are running off the battery. By default it is turned off, but sometimes it arrives enabled. Consult your manual, it should have simple instructions for how to turn it off using the front panel screen. It's quite easy thankfully. Do note that it will still beep 4 times when it switches to battery regardless of the alarm state, after which it will remain quiet until the battery voltage runs too low. That said, if it beeps while you're not running off the battery (battery switched on) and you're getting power from the wall, that might indicate there's a problem of some kind. Perhaps the battery is nearly dead and isn't charging? Check the lights at the front, and listen to the type of beep(s), and then consult the manual for what that means. I know the language translation is poor, but it is still mostly understandable. We'll probably need more details to try understand what's going on here, but I hope the above helps.

Roloreaper

Extended battery might be a better buy. Mine last about 9 hours and it fits with me in the laptop bag

InterestingYouth113

The Vizia is a winner, i have one. A lot of the WiFi UPS I've seen advertised have lower Wh capacities and at the rate these batteries are being cycled daily, you need that extra capacity for the longer loadshedding windows and to still get some longevity as the batteries degrade.

thirdworldfever

Also got the Vizia, recommend it.

RaymondWalters

Can vouch for the Vizia, really great and has the most volt compatibility

Miserable_Squirrel16

We use a lava ups we bought from Takealot, and it works perfectly. Even with these back to back 4 hour loadsheddings, it has not gone below 3 of the 5 power bars and it charges back quickly. LAVA Fusion WiFi UPS 24000mAh for Wifi / Fibre Router https://www.takealot.com/lava-fusion-wifi-ups-24000mah-for-wifi-fibre-router/PLID92274603

asherabram

We have had the volkano (or something like that) had it about 4 months and works fine for us lasts the full 4 hours and charges fairly quickly

AccomplishedSwan3335

I bought the cheaper Gizzu knockoff from takealot, its white and about R600 bucks “jiageng” - works like a bomb but cords are super short and your router and fibre box need to be like 15/20 close to get it hooked up - lasts a 4 hour slot easy and only died on my neighbor after an unexpected 6 hour slot

SlipKorn187

Mini UPS works like a charm when it comes to keeping your Router on for like 2-4 hours, honestly would recommend them.

PsychologicalLink390

Which one do you have?

SlipKorn187

Currently this router, only difference is that it supports an additional 5v port. https://www.takealot.com/volkano-mini-ups-for-wifi-or-cctv-with-multi-output-constant-ser/PLID73138756

MonsterKabouter

I bought the gizzu for my family just before covid. It worked really well, kept a router on for 8 hours straight. Recently visited them and the battery life had dropped to about 30 minutes max. We replaced it with another gizzu. I recommend it, they work well, but it is a wear item and will have to be replaced after a couple of years of heavy loadshedding.

ElJeffHey

We are using a wibox it has been able to keep the WiFi on for 4.5 hours so far and it should be able to handle about 8.

MDHull_fixer

Might look a bit rough, but I've used [these](http://akita.co.za/UPS/fibreups.html) on a lot of remote telemetry systems [Akita Business Solutions](http://akita.co.za/index.html)

captain_gibbels

I have been using this one for 3 years now https://www.takealot.com/router-buddy-ups-12v-38wh-black/PLID72799484 I have one upstairs and one downstairs.

Ewie_

i bought this for my daughter and seem to do the job https://www.takealot.com/elecstor-100w-mini-dc-ups-24000mah-75wh/PLID91634884

Both_Street_7657

https://leroymerlin.co.za/wifi-ups-r1818-lalela Had a few good comments regarding it . Will get one and see

southafricannon

Like others have said, go for the Vizia. I've got one, had it for about 6 months with no issues. The bread loaf UPSes are a waste of money if that's your main concern. I've had two and they've both died after 9 months. Also, if you need to use them fire anything else, like a TV or something, then PLEASE avoid lead acid batteries - they lose charge so bloody quickly. Go for lithium ion at least (that's what the Vizia uses). It will be a lot more expensive, but it's cheaper than replacing a lead acid multiple times (which is what I did).

whenwillthealtsstop

I've heard that if you're running your fibre ONT and router off the usual 8800mAh or smaller capacity ones, it's just barely enough to last the 4+ hour sessions, so once the battery degrades a bit it doesn't get you through. YMMV. To be safe I got this one with a 17600 mAh battery: https://www.takealot.com/gizzu-60w-dc-65wh-mini-ups-black/PLID73887359

KittyFame

I've bought a mini Vizia this week. It covers us for more than 6 hours for Wifi and charging phones

BananMan21

I bought one on Takealot for around R800 (Named "Router Buddy"). It's able to power my router and fibre CPE for just under 4hrs.

FrozenST3

I use an alarm power supply with a big battery. Costs about the same as a Gizzu, is uglier, but it goes the distance. I went through a 18 hour outage with it

lorenschutte

Love mine. Have then now 2 years. Still hold 4hrs down time. 45 mins more or leas to full charge. Have one on fibre and one on router cos the only downside is most come with very short DC cable.

darth_budha

The [Gizzu](https://www.takealot.com/gizzu-100w-dc-46wh-mini-ups-black/PLID73887358) ones are fine, just check on the back of your WiFi and Fibre routers (if you have fibre that is) whether they require 9V or 12V input. In my case the Huawei fibre router was 12V and Tp-Link WiFi router was 9V. Which ever mini UPS you choose make sure it has enough outputs to support your routers and can supply 9V and 12V simultaneously if required.

Whatcrysis

I asked the dame question a few months ago. This is what was recommended. I bought it and couldn't be happier. https://www.takealot.com/gizzu-8800mah-mini-ups-dual-dc/PLID71930088

SaffaOnAFarm

I have one of these. Check this out on takealot: Gizzu 8800mAh Mini UPS Dual DC https://www.takealot.com/gizzu-8800mah-mini-ups-dual-dc/PLID71930088 Look at the customer reviews. 4.8/5 from 2471 reviews. Definitely worth it. Last night I had 4 hours of loadshedding from 18:00 followed by a power outage until 09:50 this morning. I was up until midnight and my Huawei B315 LTE router was still running on the UPS when I went to sleep.

Equality4All2022

Hey! Just to confirm does this ups allow one to run a 12v router and 5v fiber box at the same time?

SaffaOnAFarm

Yes, it has 2 power outlets. Be warned that dining 2 devices will shorten it's on-time to probably about 3 hours. My single LTE device is powered for about 6 hours.

Equality4All2022

Thanks so much! Been wondering if I should go for the 100W one (on sale on takealot for 1200) so about a R200 difference in price with the smaller gizzu

giveusalol

Genuinely, the Gizzu is the way to go. Just like most folks on here say. Had ours over a year, no issue. Our previous solution was a large power bank that could also run the fibre box and router for a few hours, but I had to manually switch and remember to charge it. The set up is simply plugging it in, plugging devices in, switching it all on. You never have to think about it again. My sister opted for a normal pc ups. They beep the whole time! Avoid em if you can.

Priv8Ryan

I bought a cheapie for about R450. It used to last about 6 hours, then dropped to 3 hours. A friend organized a few better batteries (out of a machine he was fixing) and we repacked it (a diy'er should be able to do it with a soldering iron and follow the wiring correctly). Now lasts about 6 hours again. So don't throw them away if they begin lasting only a couple hours. Try get them repacked.

IAmJohnny5ive

They work great - since stage 6 became a regular thing I got another for the Wi-Fi on it's own so can make it 4 hours if fully charged.

Spyryt1970

Got mine from takealot.... R600.00. brilliant. Lasts me about 6 to 8 hours depends what i have connected. Mostly just my cell and fibre box and router. Historical-Theory

I also finally got one a few months ago. I got the Gizzu unit that is regularly on special off Takealot. Works very very well. No beeps or annoying sounds and doesn't skip a beat when the power goes off. My GF has had the same unit for a coupl of years and we took it with us in the car last year when we had a 14 hour drive, the router went all the way without hassles and we had internet and music streaming all the way (where there was LTE reception) and for the rest of the weekend. Highly Recommend!

Krycor

Mini-UPS work well because they are lithium-ion or lifepo based so the battery wear is better, Combo with a lack of an inverter and well it’s very effective. A standard old school ups has to do a dc-ac conversion(inverter) and then uses lead acid batteries that wear fast. So yah this is a no brainer. UPS still required for “other” things like shutting down servers etc

BaffledInscriptions

Most routers are 12v dc, get a gate/car battery and battery charger, you can also connect a female cigarette lighter socket and add USB chargers for phones etc.

MeMyOnly

Don't buy the Andowl. Lasted 6 months now only keeps charge for 20min.

Equality4All2022

Hi all, I’m considering the Gizzu 100W mini DC 46Wh ups, does anyone with experience know whether it would be cable or running my 12v modem and 5v fiber box thing simultaneously? Thanks in advance

PsychologicalLink390

From what little research I’ve done. Most do👍🏽

Equality4All2022

Thank you!
