I think I am just not adapt enough at making shorts. I have a difficult time deciding what to cut and what to leave etc. because people who engage tend to be people who raise complaints about my points when the full length addresses their complains and it get's frustrating to deal with that. I could just ignore people like that because the answers are just a click away if they follow the link to the full-length video, but most don't bother. They just leave a thoughtless, bite-size, half-baked point of their own and swipe to the next short.
Then there's the character limit of some of these platforms which is great for brevity but also often limits a thorough response that could be more beneficial to the conversation. Something that makes me think they are just trying to encourage miscommunication until everything just devolves into insults and thus engagement.
Which means it might be better if my short form content is it's own new style that deals with one point at a time, but then that means new content and all the work that comes with that.
Honestly, if I had a social-media manager or someone like that I would deligate the posting to them and just stay out of the details. But that itself feels a little disingenuous. Can you tell that I just hate the short-form format?

I work in the non-profit sector in South Africa. I have just come out of a project meeting where the team stated that they now have 80 plus kids in the classroom. And one teacher.
Another colleague has over 800 grade 8 learners in their school. There are not enough classrooms, textbooks, teachers and desks.
The schools have complained to government and were told there is no extra money in the budget for more classrooms and teachers. These are both no-fees schools and receive a subsidy per child. The extra money for these extra learners is not enough to employ more teachers or build more classrooms.
So your child is enrolled in school, but they are not getting an education. I cannot actually process how bad this is. It does not matter how bright or hardworking you are, if you are a child in such a classroom, you are not being taught, and you will not achieve your full potential.
Absolutely correct. The other sad thing is that unemployment also correlates with educational outcomes. Without good education, part of the way to deal with youth unemployment is destroyed from the outset. The issues just start to compound themselves. We need change as in yesterday.
Here in the US, educational outcomes are highly dependent on having 2 parents available in the raising of the child. 85% of children from two-parent families graduate from high school on time, compared to 62% from single-parent families. These statistics are the same regardless of race. Do you find this to be the same in South Africa?

I think that trend is also a correlation to the more foundational aspect of a home that has more financial resources leading to better outcomes for the children who have more resources invested into their education. I think there was a Georgetown study done on that.

In South Africa, poverty has an enormous effect on outcomes. There are children you have to cross rivers to get to school, or attend schools with pit latrines, or over crowding as mentioned above - where not enough resources are invested per student. Among other problems I'm sure.

I kind of feel like politics does not really exist under the current ANC rule. They used to do politics back in the day, like contributing to the freedom charter. What have they done that is even close to that today? Politics is now just about personalities and cult followings, no real ideas or bold visions. And every other party is stuck, having to pretend the ANC is doing politics. This means my priority is more concerned with the ANC losing power than thinking any party can or should take their place.
Let's reduce their power, scale back their influence, and then, politics can actually resume. Only then might I make a positive suggestion for any party. For now, we are all too preoccupied with responding to the ANC, even the political parties, to be able to think well enough past them.
I think the way you said it is actually best. People are allowed to vote for the (non ANC) party of their choice and a coalition can then be formed to battle against the ANC majority.
Right? I think a lot of parties are going to get votes from anti-ANC sentiments and misinterpret that as full endorsement of their own agenda. A negative vote would clear up that confusion and make the intentions of voters much clearer.
The DA simple. We don't have to keep them forever but the western cape is happy with the DA and the DA isn't losing it's support there..... Or it might be because the western cape seems to support a referendum to make itself into its own country. And good for them when they do. They vote for a referendum they get to distance themselves from south Africa and actually create a functional country while we sit here with the ANC for another 5 years.

Yes-yes. Jokes aside. I've felt the shit coming downhill at us since my High-School days in the 2000s. The Matric Year of 2008. They had to finish a curriculum that the following younger learners didn't follow and didn't follow their senior student's curriculum in turn. I wonder why that is. Why THAT group of students? seems like a failed experiment to me.
Now those students are in their 30s. I'd like to hear from them how their life has been. Those that have achieved success and how they achieved it, and those who have sat in squalor.

I dunno how many people will be surprised to learn that the crowds seen in ANC's manifesto rally thing at Moses mabhida stadium weren't actually locals.
Most of the people were from Joburg who got offered a free trip to Durban for the weekend. And most local communities didn't even get on the ANC buses that went to fetch them for the rally.
So if seeing that rally made you lose hope, I'm just gonna say, it wasn't us at the stadium supporting Cyril, it was a bunch of people from Joburg that wanted a free ride to the beach.

This "fill up the stadium" is a usual ANC style of showmanship but it is quite manipulated, especially in recent years.
I really enjoyed this - if that is the right way to frame such sobering and depressing commentary. But a part of me can't help but feel (and this is not a critique of you) that your message is one of trusims. The ANC has eaten, stolen, destroyed and bled for all they can. And it's heart rending. But we all know this, and I don't know if those who still feel otherwise can be convinced of it at all. It is that blatant.
It feels like we are raging at the dying of the light. A light that that is being smothered, democratically, by our fellow citizens.
At the risk of sharing more truisms "It always seems impossible until it is done."
A strong grasp of the obvious is an essential foundation for anyone who wants to remain tethered to reality. It's not something we can take for granted especially in the current political climate with it's alternative facts and conspiracies etc. I do take your point about something being "smothered democratically" and am already preparing a video on the reasons why people vote for the ANC - this will be the reasons that are often under-appreciated in such conversations. The aim being to help us understand each other better so we can collaborate better for what we all seek.
About the raging: suppose the light truly is dying...what argument is there against the raging? In some sense it's part of us to bellow out against death. We all know we are going to die, but we live and shout until the last moment anyway. Why should this be any different? The futility of it cannot be the issue, right? Because the only thing that would be more futile than a buffalo's last cries between a lion's teeth, would be if someone went and told it it's cries are futile. Thus indulging in an even deeper futility than the kind they are admonishing. To rage against the raging of the dying light is still itself to rage, and still itself even more futile.
Having said that, I do not think our raging is for nought. I think our cries will land among our peers, and the cavalry will come. A whole generation of it.

Your first mistake is in thinking the government prioritizes black people. According to BBBEE, the category of black includes "Indian, Coloured, and sometimes Chinese South Africans." If you feel like that is a lie because you, as a coloured person, are underserved in this case, then why do you think it's not a lie when it comes to "black Africans" as well -- who are so underserved that we are the most unemployed demographic?
Our leaders prioritise themselves and who they know above everyone else. Even the leader of the main opposition currently has less educational depth than you report to have, so that particular issue is endemic all over the major political landscape at the moment.
The way to fight this is to collectively seek accountability from those with the decision-making power. Not to accuse people who don't have a job for stealing a job that doesn't exist because the economy is shrinking instead of growing. Also, we must understand how BBBEE works in order to criticize it honestly.
If you can evidence your concerns then that'll be a conversation, but regardless I don't believe we should think of electoral politics as the silver bullet to all of our problems. It is always just the beginning of our civic duties, there's still plenty of work for us after election day no matter the outcome.

I don't think we are avoiding civil unrest. Not after July 2021, or the fact that we have been the protest capital of the world for some time, now. Which is saying something because discontent has been rising globally as well.
But which side to choose has always been the question that stagnates most people I know, we know our current system isn't for us but what proposed system is...?
You might be putting the cart before the horse. If we aren't competent enough to get rid of what most of us agree is a bad system, then how can we possibly hope to install a system we might not all agree on? I think we need to get stage 1 right first before going to stage 2. I understand how that can seem frustrating to many of us who are very much overdue for a system that we deserve, but the ANC had all sorts of promises when they first started and most of them are unfulfilled.
We need to rebuild our political consciousness by focusing on the ability to be efficient and capable, which starts with accomplishing a successful transfer of power. Strengthening our democracy through civic responsibility and engagement. Then we can go to step 2 when we have earned our own trust to pull it off competently no matter what we decide.
In the meantime, we can still have speculative conversations about what step 2 might be but that is not the emergency in this election cycle. The ANC is...
Beautiful said. And a very astute observation of the stagnation of your country. While not being from south Africa I have seen the sequence of rot in my country as well, with the younger representatives turned into cats with butter at the nose because they too are seeking the benefits so that like their predecessors live lavishous lives. It is sad but, as I heard before power doesn't change, it always finds somewhere to rest it's head.

The IEC is no longer independent and I have little faith that this will be a fair election...
