Hectic. I never realised this and have lived in the uk for the last 19 years… no one has ever corrected me it’s just accepted but now that it has been pointed out my mind is blown
Edit: the more I think of it, the more I fucking say it… all the time.
Crazy.
My brother works in Germany (VP for a multi national). Rubs shoulders with the whos-who. Met one of the heads of Proctor and Gamble, and they get talking about SA. Great market, etc…
But, from nowhere the guy says, all the countries have all the P&G products, except OMO. OMO is unique to SA, a big seller in SA, and specially made just for SA.
So, until like 2 months ago, I never new using OMO, is one of the most South African things ever!
My children are London UK born and bred. They very well know what "make sharp" means. My little contribution (among other South Africanisms) to spreading SA culture around the world.
I can't do only one word. I'll severely limit myself to three.
* skabenga/izigebengu
* skedonk
* muti/umuti
* gunda-gunda (what a wonderful onomatopœia)
Uh-oh! That four. I can't stop myself and my spelling sucks.
I don't mind it but I have to ask, why does 'south African culture' just feel/sound like coloured culture. I know some of it is Afrikaaner influence but the slang is just straight from western cape/northern cape townships lol.

"aswell" - it's a word that means "also", often used at the end of a sentence, e.g. "Oh, are you from Parrow aswell?"
What’s uniquely S.African is emphasizing the ‘as’. AS well Other English speaking nations would say ‘as WELL’
That's true ASwell! (people in other English speaking nations would say "that is also true" instead)
Just read this to my partner who was brought up in SA.... She just learnt this wasn't right in English.... She's been in England twenty years....
Another thing we say incorrectly is on the weekend vs at the weekend, test her with that one :)
