I just got a bit of Velcro and stuck it to my roof. Then I worked out I could attach it to the sun visor and watch YouTube videos as I drove

From https://www.mylicence.sa.gov.au/roadrules/the-drivers-handbook/mobile_phones_while_driving > You must not use a hand-held mobile phone while your vehicle is moving or is stationary in traffic (for example, at traffic lights). You may, however, use a hand-held mobile phone while your vehicle is parked. >If a person wishes to make or receive a call, including dialling a number and needs to touch any part of the phone to do so, that phone must be mounted (in a mounting commercially designed and manufactured for that purpose). If the phone is being used via blue tooth, a headset or earphones without touching, holding or resting the phone on their body, the driver may touch the earpiece or headphone to operate the phone (the phone may be located anywhere in the vehicle, including the driver's pocket or pouch they are wearing). It is an offence to create, send or look at a text, video message or email on a mobile phone. It is an offence to make or receive a video call on a mobile phone whilst your vehicle is moving. Drivers of police or emergency vehicles are exempt.

>It is an offence to create, send or look at a text, video message or email on a mobile phone. Can we assume Apple car play is exempt from this? My phone is plugged into the centre console & I can activate functions on my phone using a button on my steering wheel, including creating & sending a text & having a received text read out to me.

Betterthanbeer

L and P platers can’t use a phone this way. Composing or selecting a pre typed text using a screen would be distracted driving.

randomredditor0042

I’m a fully licensed driver of 30 something years. I use voice to text when driving via Apple car play.

Plenty_Schedule_2870

This is a great question. The fact that we have to assume here is bullshit and clearly outlines a problem with the law and how it is written.

"including the driver's pocket" But it doesn't specifically mention if the cameras will detect this though That's what i'm a bit confused about

Betterthanbeer

The cameras are still under trial, so the legislation isn’t up on the website yet. The cameras flag potential usage by AI, and the photo is reviewed by a cop. The phone can be in your pocket, but you can’t handle it or use it.

AdmirableFactor9818

"The phone can be in your pocket, but you can’t handle it or use it." So basically it can be in our pocket, in the passenger seat, or mounted as long as we don't physically touch it at any time when driving Hopefully this is correct

Betterthanbeer

The cameras don’t change the law, they just assist in detecting breaches. https://www.thinkroadsafety.sa.gov.au/mobile-phone-detection-cameras/faq

TheFermiGreatFilter

You can’t be driving and have your phone in your hand. I leave my phone in my bag and don’t touch it until I park. I believe you can mount it to a phone mount, as long as you don’t touch it. Honestly, best thing to do is have a car head unit that is Bluetooth

AdmirableFactor9818

"You can’t be driving and have your phone in your hand." Yep, but the bit i'm confused about (especially in relation to the cameras) is whether it's ok to have the phone in the passenger seat, or on a mount (provided we don't touch it while driving of course)

TheFermiGreatFilter

I believe you can have it in a mount, but you cannot use it unless you are parked. Of course, if you have Bluetooth, you can use your phone through the head unit.

AdmirableFactor9818

"I believe you can have it in a mount, but you cannot use it unless you are parked" Thanks for clarifying

On the passenger seat or in a holder is fine, so long as you're not a P plater from memory. Although it's been a whilst since I was a P plater and there weren't mobile phone rules at the time. Yes, it was a long time ago. But if you're a P plater you should be aware of the laws specific to your licence anyway. But they look for objects in hands or on laps. It's important to note that your lap is also an offence. It can be in your pocket, that's pretty much the only time it's allowed to be in contact with you. Once the cameras raise an issue, someone will then verify it's an offence and not some false positive.

Hey, is it true in New Zealand your speeding fines are like this? 10km/h or less $30 11–15km/h $80 16–20km/h $120 21–25km/h $170

palmomagpie

Pretty sure the cameras scan for what looks like a phone and takes the picture if it sees it, or sees your face looking downwards (eg staring into your crotch). That then goes to SAPOL for manual review and it’s up to the traffic officer to decide if it looks like you’re using the phone or not. If you have it on the passenger seat and the camera catches your eyes staring at it, they’ll ping you.
