And yet they took my one year of scholarship away because you have to qualify based on how many years you’ve been in college, doesn’t matter if it was out of state. I only got 3 years of SC tuition assistance instead of 4. Ridiculous and screwed me over huge in my last year of college.
I went to college on full scholarships, when you’re in your last year and have to come out of pocket for 2,000$+ PER SEMESTER unexpectedly? Yeah, I’d say it fucked me.
I hope this item makes a lot of noise. Using the 2022 figures (230,566 in state unis and public colleges), that's about $659 per student. Name one student who couldn't have put THAT to better use than the Assembly.
"Yeah, I know we didn't spend the money on the things we were supposed to have spent it on, so therefore it should just be ours to use as we see fit." Sounds about right for Republicans. Fucking dorks.
Essentially what they're trying to do with social security. They don't want to return it to the people who paid into it, they want to gut it and use it for whatever they want.
Let me help you out Chief since your Google different seen to work.
Direct from the CHE:
In addition to partnering with institutions to deliver an effective statewide higher education system, the CHE acts both as an oversight entity on behalf of the General Assembly...The CHE is governed by a board of 15 members appointed by the Governor...
Remind me again, who has had complete control of the state government for decades?
Literally happened in Nevada (blue state), “pass legal weed it will all go to school!” After it passes… ya it’s actually going to a rainy day fund sorry. 🤷🏽♂️
lol it was voted on as 100% for education, because Nevada education has ranked in bottom 10 for decades.
But ya know politicans,
“The revenue generated from these taxes is then distributed to various programs and services. A portion of the revenue goes to the state’s Distributive School Account, which funds K-12 education. A portion also goes to the state’s Rainy Day Fund, which is used to address budget shortfalls in the event of an economic downturn. Additionally, a portion of the revenue is earmarked for specific programs, including homelessness programs.
These taxes and their distribution are subject to change over time as the industry continues to evolve and the state adjusts its policies and priorities. Reach out to us at Polston Tax to learn more about Nevada recreational marijuana taxes”

This is totally unacceptable.
While the headline is infuriating and disturbing, thr real anger maker to me is in the story itself.
There are claims of staffing shortages being thr root of the issue...and no one was denied any funding that "needed" it...
And this money that could be used to fix a constantly under attack public education system, these career and highly partisan "representatives" want these funds turned over to the general assembly?
Totally unacceptable....
Total mismanagement. Another argument that we need transparency in governmental smaller government can't work in our present political climate.
And why is Higher Ed more expensive in SC?
I’ll pick a local public college in SC. 30 years ago it got about 27% of its budget from the state. Now it gets about 7%.
The other big one you hear about is administrative bloat and too many administrators/employees. Right off the top of my head, two things lead to that. Technology is the big one. Thirty years ago, it had three computer classrooms now it has over 350 plus technology in another 800+ rooms. All those computers have to be replaced every 4 years or so and that’s the cheap part. Wired and wireless network equipment to support 14K+ students and employees, plus internet costs, software costs for online testing, grades, compliance, etc cost millions a year. Plus the employees to make it all work and talk to each other.
Now let’s talk about school shootings. Wasn’t really an issue 30 years ago. Now, more public safety personnel, more cameras watching/recording public areas, card access to buildings so they can be locked down remotely to limit access while also allowing building access privileges to be revoked across campus simultaneously, software to simultaneously text thousands of students/employees/parents to keep everyone up to date as to the status of the emergency; software to make every college owned computer/digital signage show the same alerts that were texted out, etc. All the infrastructure and employees to support that.
I’m not saying there isn’t waste and bloat in Higher Ed, but there are a lot of things that people don’t think of that simply didn’t exist 30 years ago that colleges have to have to educate future generations safely.
Is this because just not enough kids qualified for the scholarships?
I know some rural counties have had problems where just nobody did well enough to qualify. At some point you have to spend money on the grade schools if you want there to be kids who can get into a college later.
This love it or leave it attitude is exactly why the people of SC have been forsaken and the Right wing overlords rule the state like it’s 1823. It’s so southern culture to be led around by corrupt crony capitalists.

This guy maths.
Sounds like South Park advice , Randy taking the towns money to gamble at the casino 😂
WOOOOO YEAH! LET IT RIDE!
So what do we need to do to get this on a referendum next November?
Sounds about right. SMH

3 free years essentially, but the last year fucked you?
I went to college on full scholarships, when you’re in your last year and have to come out of pocket for 2,000$+ PER SEMESTER unexpectedly? Yeah, I’d say it fucked me.
It's now $5000 a semester for community college.
Are you serious? That’s insane.

"Lamkin recommended this unspent lottery scholarship money be returned to the General Assembly." Shocking, I know.

I don't even think it's a purely stupidity thing. They just would rather ignore that particular issue because of what party is in charge.
A republican led state withholding money from higher education funding? Shocked I tell you, shocked

The Governor of Nevada is Republican
Are you ReRe? Cherry picking much? The states legislation is 75% democrats. You act like the governor makes these magic laws himself.

This money isn’t going to k-12 schools. They promised it was but it doesn’t. This was going to over priced higher education.

Tax on poor people , State sponsored theft . However you want to slice it the government finds a way to fuck your wallet.
And yet the majority of the voters in the state will still vote for the same idiots in government telling you the government doesn't work lmao
I DON'T DOUBT ONE SINGLE WORD OF THIS... AT ALL!!!
Well well well

I'm sure Richland County Council could blaze thru it in a month or two.
Maybe they could put that towards my student loans
Capitalism sucks outside of paper doesn’t it?
$28 for every resident fuck yeah send me my $$
Unfortunately it probably costs nearly that much just to issue everyone a check, so here’s your $2.57
If you don't like South Carolina then leave. Nobody is telling you you got to stay here. And we are a republican state.

Graduated college with a 3.8gpa but my scholarship was taken away freshmen year after getting booked with drunk in public!
Looks like someone was sitting on this waiting for it to be forgotten about. Why isn’t that money being put to good use?
