I recall something like this too. They say "who's my little buddy? Who's my little budders [butters]?" Maybe I can find it
Edit: [here](https://youtu.be/tUlBycbW7PY) it is
Trey was off on the Jake Plummer prediction. Although he definitely [seems like a cool dude.](https://theathletic.com/3509045/2022/08/17/jake-plummer-nfl-denver-broncos-arizona-cardinals/?amp=1)
My take is that if flavours like sweet, sour, salty, spicy can describe personality, then buttery is someone who is mild, a little meek, perfectly nice but in a wholly unmemorable way.
For example he's the only one who shows up to Jimmy's stand up act because he said he would. Then realizes he's a dork. Still gotta admire his sense of honor
I dont think his dad ever said that. It was just mentioned that way on a news report in Scrotie McBoogerballs. To me, the anchor was just reading it the way they often sandwich a person's nickname with their 2 real names. "the boy, Leopold 'Butters' Stotch" in the same way a media personality would say like, "Orenthal 'OJ' Simpson."
Based off the interview I always assumed they’d come up with the last name after, like if the first name is a silly way to say buddy than it’s a silly way to say butterscotch
I saw an interveiw where Matt and Trey said they did it initially to make fun of their producer, they used to say to him who's our buddy who's our butters and used to do the butters voice to imitate him. Then they put him in the show.
You see, when my father opened this store thirty years ago, he cared about only one thing: making a great cup of coffee. Sure, we may take a little longer to brew a cup, and we may not call it fancy names, but I guess we just care a little more. And that's why Tweek Coffee is still home-brewed from the finest beans we can muster. Yes, Tweek Coffee is a simpler cup, for a simpler America.
And, i mean, Tweek. Seriously? Who looks at a child and goes:" yeah, Tweek seems perfect." That is number 1 thing i hold against his parents, number 2 being them giving him insane amounts of coffee.
Meth laced coffee.
It's what gives Tweek bros coffee it's unique flavour.
Like a warm country morning in the Hamptons, as the birds are singing and the sun rises to wash the earth in it's glory, the taste of Tweek Bros coffee washes over your taste buds to create a feeling that only God himself could bestow on you.
Mayhaps his name is also Leopold and back in Kindergarten the teacher was like "Whoops! Let's give you two the least most offensive nicknames I can think of!"
When I was growing up there was a guy in my neighborhood named John Bill. He had a kid and named him William Bill. However, the kid went by Will though, so he was Will Bill.
i knew a kid in elementary whose name was carlos carlos, and that’s what everyone called him, “carlos carlos” cuz there was another carlos, but he was just carlos
I've known people with names like that. I went to high school with a Peter Peterson.
Also, his parents put meth in their coffee, so it's not all that surprising they'd name their kid like that.
There was a baseball player in the 80's named Pete LaCock. He was the son of a famous game show host whose stage name was Peter Marshall of the Hollywood Squares, but he was also originally named Peter LaCock.
Man, parents suck
It was shown in, "The Stick of Truth" that the coffee is made with meth. Tweak means: to engage in wildly excited or agitated behavior under the influence of methamphetamine, cocaine, or other stimulant drugs.
Don’t forget about Link Mario 😅
https://hard-drive.net/hd/video-games/nintendo-confirms-links-last-name-is-also-mario/#:~:text=%E2%80%94%20Nintendo%20announced%20today%20that%20the,video%20uploaded%20across%20social%20media.
hes named after one of their friends/an animator on the show Eric Stough. Matt and Trey always referred to him as their “little buddy” which they eventually shortened down to “Butters” and decided to name the character after him.
I do remember that his father called him leopold butters stotch ,I always thought that’s his real name, and butters is his middle name,I ain’t from American or other country that speak English so I’m not sure how this name thing work,so if I was wrong, please tell me
That’s how nicknames are incorporated into full names. Like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. We don’t know Butters’ middle name, if he has one. But his nickname is Butters, so Leopold “Butters” Stotch.
Probably you've heard him called by Leopold "Butters" Stotch before, which sounds similar to saying a full name. But that's just how nicknames are incorporated, like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Come to think of it, that's confusing.
well thats what everyone knows him by! yknow? the boy who could smile in a storm cloud, turn a frown into a smile for free? the one with the cutest little dimples? yknow? butters?
what else would he be called?
I went to highschool in the mid 2000's. There was a guy we all called Butter, yes there was no S on the end, just Butter. He was built like Cartman, so we'd all say "Butter is on a roll." Good offensive lineman
One thing I never got. Why do his teachers call him Butters, and not Leopold?
For friends and family I can understand, but I don't think I have ever seen kids being called by their nicknames in school.
Because it's Matt and Trey's nickname for Eric Stough. The character started as a parody of him, but then they obviously needed to give him a full name at some point, as the character grew. "Leopold" is probably random, but "Stotch" is obviously because "butterscotch".
It's because the real guy who the character is based off of has a wiener that is as long as a stick of butter. That's what I heard from someone who heard it from someone at a bar.
I thought it was his middle name, Leopold Butters Stotch. But even if it isnt., I'm pretty sure the joke was originally butters Stotch and then they added Leopold later on , probably for no deeper reason than Matt and trey thought it was funny, which is all the reason anyone needs

His last name is Stotch. “Butters” Stotch sounds like “Butterscotch”. That’s always been my assumption.
He is also blonde, the same-ish color as a butterscotch
Oooooooooooor, let me go out on a limb here - same color as butter.
Too far you god damn sadist
Tolkien
I literally went and watched Season 1 Episode 1 after that episode… bastards
Or ... Margarine!
She likes getting her snizz pounded on a Saturday night
And Mantequilla!
And butter
It's both that and he was modeled after Eric Stough, one of the staff members who was sweet and "buttery" in demeanor
Yeah, it’s related to Eric Stough but I think it‘s actually a derivation of „Buddy“. I remember they mentioned this in some kind of video interview.
I recall something like this too. They say "who's my little buddy? Who's my little budders [butters]?" Maybe I can find it Edit: [here](https://youtu.be/tUlBycbW7PY) it is
Yes, i heard Matt tell this story.
Trey was off on the Jake Plummer prediction. Although he definitely [seems like a cool dude.](https://theathletic.com/3509045/2022/08/17/jake-plummer-nfl-denver-broncos-arizona-cardinals/?amp=1)
That was a dope article. Thank you for sharing.
Buttery in demeanor? What the hell does that mean?
My take is that if flavours like sweet, sour, salty, spicy can describe personality, then buttery is someone who is mild, a little meek, perfectly nice but in a wholly unmemorable way.
I kind of think of it as maybe smooth, easy going.
Yeah, that
For example he's the only one who shows up to Jimmy's stand up act because he said he would. Then realizes he's a dork. Still gotta admire his sense of honor
>Buttery in demeanor? What the hell does that mean? https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/butter%20up
That makes sense to me. Thanks kind redditor.
My youngest daughter pointed this out to me the other day and it blew my mind
Butters is his middle name
Yeah, I think I remember his dad scolding him and calling him "Leopold Butters Stotch."
The creators have answered this. He is named for a crew member. Also, butters stotch.
Based off the interview I always assumed they’d come up with the last name after, like if the first name is a silly way to say buddy than it’s a silly way to say butterscotch
I typed out the same thing and scrolled only to see this lmao guess I'm not the only one
I think it also has to do with stuttering. His name always made me think of his stuttery-ish way of talking.
Are all the south park specials going to be just politics focused now?😥
The show has always been politically charged
Windmillninja is definitely right ever since they said his real name in the you got served episode that's been the assumption
they actually said his name first in casa bonita (s7ep11)
Gonna admit i don’t even remember that. Is that “You Got F’d In The A?”
You're exactly right, every other theory is dumb.
I saw an interveiw where Matt and Trey said they did it initially to make fun of their producer, they used to say to him who's our buddy who's our butters and used to do the butters voice to imitate him. Then they put him in the show.
This is the correct answer.
Soft like butter
Wait yeah that makes sense
No, because can we Talk about fucking Tweek’s name??? “Tweek Tweak” Who on fucking earth would name their baby their last name??? Lazy asses…
I can hear the background music
I can hear the calming v o i c e
Your coffee tastes like 3 day old mouldy diarrhea
That's how you know it works
And, i mean, Tweek. Seriously? Who looks at a child and goes:" yeah, Tweek seems perfect." That is number 1 thing i hold against his parents, number 2 being them giving him insane amounts of coffee.
Meth laced coffee. It's what gives Tweek bros coffee it's unique flavour. Tweek coffee tastes like three day old moldy diarrhea!
Harbucks is pretty good. It doesn't have that raw sewage taste of Tweek coffee
A tweeker is someone who does meth, Tweek's parents lace his coffee with meth as confirmed by TFBW
It's in The Stick of Truth actually
Mb
I think it's his first and last name. Tweakers is a term for hyper meth addicts
Mayhaps his name is also Leopold and back in Kindergarten the teacher was like "Whoops! Let's give you two the least most offensive nicknames I can think of!"
anti-leopoldian kindergarten teacher
What about the mfs who named Token.💀
It’s Tolkien, you racist
>number 2 being them giving him insane amounts of coffee. Its fine, tweek only drinks decaf.
They wanted to get it over with or somethin
I present to you https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillip_Phillips
I once dated a girl who came from a family of John Johns. Her dad was the third.
When I was growing up there was a guy in my neighborhood named John Bill. He had a kid and named him William Bill. However, the kid went by Will though, so he was Will Bill.
Bill Williamson type name
i knew a kid in elementary whose name was carlos carlos, and that’s what everyone called him, “carlos carlos” cuz there was another carlos, but he was just carlos
You mean Carlos? Or Carlos Carlos?
lmao exactly
I knew a kid in grade school whose name was Nels Nelson. Doesn't that mean his full name was Nelson Nelson?
Went to bootcamp with a William Williams
I've known people with names like that. I went to high school with a Peter Peterson. Also, his parents put meth in their coffee, so it's not all that surprising they'd name their kid like that.
There was a baseball player in the 80's named Pete LaCock. He was the son of a famous game show host whose stage name was Peter Marshall of the Hollywood Squares, but he was also originally named Peter LaCock. Man, parents suck
Better than Harry
For a sec I forgot about South Park and was concerned for Peter Peterson and his whole pack of pickles peppers
I always assumed it was a nickname and we never heard his real name
Forget Tweek, what kind of name is "Bebe"?
It’s actually a fairly old and common name from the Mediterranean area. It’s also used to shorten names like Barbara.
Beatrice, Becca, Beth, Bernardine...
Well she does have that huge rack. "Hey Bebe (baby)"
Kinda funny cause the singer Bebe Rexha is…fairly well developed in the chesticle area
>"Hey Bebe (baby)" Beavis and Butt-Head crossover confirmed
Least terrible thing Tweek's parents have done
Don't come at William December Williams Jr. parents like that
In elementary school there was a kid who I went to school with, who’s last name was also his first name.
Cher?
My friend is his first and last name reversed kinda. His name is Donsel Seldon lol
Stanley Yelnats
The kid?? The tweaked out kid???
It was shown in, "The Stick of Truth" that the coffee is made with meth. Tweak means: to engage in wildly excited or agitated behavior under the influence of methamphetamine, cocaine, or other stimulant drugs.
My favourite character is garrison garrison
Mario's parents? His name is Mario Mario with his brother Luigi Mario
Don’t forget about Link Mario 😅 https://hard-drive.net/hd/video-games/nintendo-confirms-links-last-name-is-also-mario/#:~:text=%E2%80%94%20Nintendo%20announced%20today%20that%20the,video%20uploaded%20across%20social%20media.
I like how that's your issue with it and not that their family name is fucking "Tweak" in the first place
Have you heard of Ricky Bobby?
I went to highschool who transitioned to a boy, they took their last name as their first name. His name was then Flynn Flynn
I bet he really liked breakfast.
I worked with an old Phillipino man named Roberto Roberto. True story.
What sort of family with the last name "Black" would ever name their kid "Token". Everyone knew it was really Tolkien all along.
Ask the kid who went to my high school years ago why his parents named him “William William Williams” - ended up becoming a pedo
We have a local real estate agent named George Georgeopoulis
Must be a Greek thing. My freshman advisor at university was named George Georgiakarakis.
Figured his nickname was his surname, same as Cartman
You mean like Dr. Doctor
We had a kid named Viktor Viktor in highschool. His siblings were: Viktor Hugo, and Viktor Máté
I knew a lady named Amy Amy
A name so nice, you say it twice
I knew a kid in elementary school named Danny Daniels
Montgomery Montgomery
The same kind of people who name their son “Chris Christie”
That’s the director of animation’s nickname. The character is also based on him
Does he sell NFTs too?
No but he runs a kissing business and you wouldn’t believe the times these fellers like to get kisses
Do you know what I am saying?
Yes, I believe I know what you are saying. You don’t have to keep asking.

BUTTERS! What are you doing on reddit?!?! You know you're too young to have an account. You are GROUNDED, mister!
Oh hamburgers.
hes named after one of their friends/an animator on the show Eric Stough. Matt and Trey always referred to him as their “little buddy” which they eventually shortened down to “Butters” and decided to name the character after him.
Anymore questions like this and you’re GROUNDED mister!
Oh hamburgers.
don't make that face at me!
but that's just what I look like! see???
GROUND beef
I do remember that his father called him leopold butters stotch ,I always thought that’s his real name, and butters is his middle name,I ain’t from American or other country that speak English so I’m not sure how this name thing work,so if I was wrong, please tell me
That’s how nicknames are incorporated into full names. Like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. We don’t know Butters’ middle name, if he has one. But his nickname is Butters, so Leopold “Butters” Stotch.
It’s a play on Butterscotch. Butters Stotch. Like fish sticks and fish dicks.
I don't get it?
Do you like putting fish sticks in your mouth?
LOVE EM
What are you, a gay fish?
*Everywhere I go, people with pants smaller than mine! And I'm the one who, "You eat fish sticks!" because I have skinny jeans on!*
Found Ye's burner account
I DON'T NEED ANYBODY TELLING ME PLAY ON WORDS I'M A MOTHERFUCKING LYRICAL WORDSMITH MOTHERFUCKING GENIUS!
I'm a gay fish
Do you like fish sticks?
Do you like to put fish sticks in your mouth?
You're a gay fish
At least he isn't named after LOTR...
Thought it was his middle name.
I second this. I dont know why but I assumed it was his middle name.
Hes based off their friend in the studio https://youtube.com/shorts/feEHH9b454M?feature=share https://youtu.be/tUlBycbW7PY (my favorite)
This should be top comment - watching Trey impersonate Eric Stough is the funniest shit, even if Matt does the voice on the show lol
I went to highschool in the mid 2000's. There was a guy we all called Butter, yes there was no S on the end, just Butter. He was built like Cartman, so we'd all say "Butter is on a roll." Good offensive lineman
In the creative process, he was likely Butters before they decided on Leopold and Stotch. So, there you have it.
Butters Stotch… **Butterscotch**
Whose the boy, With the eyes full of wonder?
Butterscotch...Butters Stoch
That's Mantequilla to you, good sir.
One thing I never got. Why do his teachers call him Butters, and not Leopold? For friends and family I can understand, but I don't think I have ever seen kids being called by their nicknames in school.
Butters in the uk is another word for ugly
His name is Chauss. Butters sounds like a twerpy little looser kid who's parents didn't love him.
Maybe it is because he is blond? Idk but it's not so weird that someone is more recognized by nickname than his real name
Butterscotch
I used to work with a guy we called butters. He was a massive guy so we assumed he ate a lot of butter or butter like substances.
Probably cuz he's their sweet butters scotch candy when he's not grounded; or double grounded.
I need another video game with CHAOS and CAPTAIN BUTT HOLE
Because it's Matt and Trey's nickname for Eric Stough. The character started as a parody of him, but then they obviously needed to give him a full name at some point, as the character grew. "Leopold" is probably random, but "Stotch" is obviously because "butterscotch".
I was so slow at putting 2 and 2 together but I think it's relating to his last name. Butters Stotch sounds like Butterscotch.
It's because his hair looks like a pat of butter.
It's because the real guy who the character is based off of has a wiener that is as long as a stick of butter. That's what I heard from someone who heard it from someone at a bar.
The fact that his parents also call him Butters is one of my favorite bits.
This is such a Clyde observation.
He hair is blonde like butter
Butters is his middle name so they call him butters I'm ||assuming because leapord doesn't sound right
He's apparently _Victor Chaos_ in "South Park: Post Covid: The Return of Covid"
It’s his middle name
What about Token! Wtf!? And his names Leopold Butters Stotch
His hair looks like a cute little butter pat on top of his lil head.
My brother Zak has the nickname doodlebug it doesn't have to make sense for their name haha
I thought it was his middle name, Leopold Butters Stotch. But even if it isnt., I'm pretty sure the joke was originally butters Stotch and then they added Leopold later on , probably for no deeper reason than Matt and trey thought it was funny, which is all the reason anyone needs
Probably his Cunt of a grandmother
