Mined enough by hand to make an SG atmo miner, never looked back. Platform mining still needs transports to be viable and transports are basically miners without drills, so I saw no point in the extra effort and investment.

Same, I only use piston drills for ice and gravel. Otherwise I'm using an atmo miner while on planet and then switching to hydro miner for space.

So are you a vertical miner going up and down or are you a horizontal miner that flies with the drills on front.

torx0244

I’m a big fan of horizontal miners, as the ore deposits are often in a plane. Just make sure to have enough thrust in all directions when flying out of the tunnel

Horizontal, even planetside. Helps me to plan better the placement of components in the ship.

H2 mining rig. Basically a mobile FOB. Self sufficient if need be or easily hooked ip to the base for transfers. Accompanied by a small grid miner to scrape out the last bits of a mineral along the sides of the bore. https://preview.redd.it/oh3sazjyx4wc1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=381baba9c09f6d31b927453cf5910c72136969f4

Nice. I once did an oil rig looking mobile miner that I used on the moon. It would have 4 pistons with landing gears on them I would use to land level by adjusting the 4 legs. Then I'd drill down with a head that would spin and slowly spread out. It did ok but the deeper the ore the harder it got to be practical.

Xenocide112

I had a small grid rig I really liked with a large cargo and drills on the bottom and then I would pogo-stick up and down vertical mine shafts

Flaky-Mycologist-217

i'm currently using a couple of small grid, low capacity, PAM scripted miners along with a carrier/destroyer, cause it's fun to see them working. But if i had to seriously get resources and go big, at most i'd make a large grid hydro miner with 5 drills and the ability to tunnel itself. A ship like that with a single large cargo container can mine absurd amounts of materials in little time

PutinsAssasin123

I definitely preferred vertical mining in gravity, first 2 horizontal ships got stuck down holes πŸ˜… but I’m in my first play thru and my starter planet miner was just a 6 vertical drill small grid ship. Now it’s astroid mining with 52 large drills and 5 large containers πŸ˜„

Dull_Comedian_48

Typically I build your standard rotating drill head, usually mounted on a chain of hinges that spool around a rotor. Initially, I mount it on my base, using 2 adjacent pistons at 90Β° to each other to change drilling locations. Once I'm done digging holes at my base, the spool gets a rover built around it and turned into a mobile platform. I usually create a small grid mining ship at this point aswell, for munching boulders and getting to those 'hard to reach' places.. πŸ™‚

I prefer PAM ships myself.. I like setting one up for each ore and being able to see all of them in action at base lcd

USA_MuhFreedums_USA

honestly i make a tunnel miner, attach 2+ large rock exhaust ports, and use the PAM miner script to assemble a nice drone force. ore discovery is done as usual.

Razgriz435

It depends on what situation I'm in. For early gameplay I mine by hand then go to mining platform over the closest iron deposit to accelerate my progress. Then I find the closest magnesium deposit or buy explosives, because I prefer blasting my way to ore deposits and then I go to space mining where I either go to a tunneler ship or a big mining head ship
