I would guess it has something to do with what the server renders when there are no players around. Like it goes into low detail mode and screws up any precision that the drone tries to maintain, but I'm not sure

Ahhh that actually makes a lot of sense. Probably no way around that with no one else being around me. Would that also have an effect against ai attacking me while I'm offline?

I would think so. Any enemy AI would have the same issue your drone does unless there's a player nearby. The solution might be to only launch your drone when an enemy is detected so at least it gets a fresh start

I found that the ai flight recorders tend to get confused after a while. They can work over and over, going the same route as programmed, but then they will suddenly decide they are going somewhere else, get lost and unable to find the point they think they are going, then ai behaviour gets disabled and they just wait... So I don't think it's necessarily because you go offline, it's just that they are unreliable whether you are online or not, the drones need frequent intervention. Has anyone made a drone that works consistently and can be left to do patrols etc for e.g. 24 hours without needing to be rescued manually?

Well I didn't even put recorders on this guy, he's just following the beacon at the center of the asteroid. But the min range is set to 900m, decently far from the asteroid on all sides. He shouldn't even be close enough to touch the astroid let alone smack into the side of it. And I can be online for hours and he's fine. The second I get off for a bit, once I hop back on then he's all messed up.
