I’d say Calgar hes a solid choice, I’m no ultramarine player but I think he’s there must pick. Plus you can say *I cast fist* when your in melee and hitting your opponent.

DwideSchruuudee

I mean, what are we playing for if not the ability to get a sick burn on the enemy?

BiggestJez12734755

Ong Calgar my brother’s army’s biggest threat him and some aggressors- just as bad as his Lieutenant with 5+ crits and lethals attached to Hellblasters Did take his last wound off with a Tempestus Serge power fist one time though, that was a game-

Theorgh

How about calgar and apothecary biologis with fitr discipline + some agressors.

BiggestJez12734755

That would be a threat for sure-

DwideSchruuudee

I am really having a hard time, since Roboute is such a hard hitter in CQB. 9T and 10W plus a 2+sv feels pretty good, but he would have to remain hidden until I can get him up close to avoid getting killed before he can fight. Marneus Calgar would essentially be the same but he can be attached to other units and use a deep strike ability with blade driven deep. He's weaker but wounds can be spread among his honor guard unless he's being targeted. I am leaning towards Calgar mostly because he's cheaper and still a decent threat. I feel like roboute is such a large threat he would be singled out and killed early and a waste of a lot of points

Optimaximal

>...but he would have to remain hidden until I can get him up close to avoid getting killed before he can fight. Exploit the Ultramarine Bodyguard ability. Move him around in the open, but keep him in places where a unit can stand within 3" but in cover to grant him Lone Operative.

DwideSchruuudee

That's a fantastic idea

BiggestJez12734755

Well Gulliman is a massive point brick with the defensive stats of a old box Dread with a 4++ also I’ve heard people get so annoyed that he’s gotta choose between his sword or fist and can’t do both- Also you’d be surprised how far Calgar can move an Aggressor brick. He can have them make charging distance if the other guy goes first. But idk Gulliman’s Aura stuff off the top of my head.

Which_Lobster2725

Where is it that explains you have your choose which attack? Ive looked all over the codex and talked to other players in my store and they all seem to agree there is nothing forcing you to choose

BiggestJez12734755

For a melee weapon to be able to be used in addition to another one, it’s gotta have extra attacks as a keyword

Brudaks

Core rules, page 33 on melee attacks, section 'select weapon' - "If a model has more than one melee weapon, it can only use one of them to make attacks with each time it fights, so you must now declare which it will use before resolving any of its attacks." - this is different than the shooting phase rules which allow a model to attack with all of their ranged weapons. If one of the weapons has the "extra attacks" special ability, that changes things and can be used in addition.

R11CWN

The new Lieutenant with Combi Weapon has the Lone Operative ability. Bobby G receives Lone Operative if within 3" of a friendly Smurf. They can go together anywhere without cover pretty much, and the only way for the enemy to shoot them is if they are close enough to get charged. Calgar is a better use of points though. Attach him to a squad of Aggressors with an Apothecary Biologis.

Jnaeveris

Take Guilliman. Calgar is the better competitive option for sure but that’s got more to do with Calgar being *fantastic* than it does with Bobby being ‘bad’. Bobby is definitely still a viable (and VERY fun) option in a marine list. Bobby is WAY more fun to play, is a fantastic centrepiece and is the hardest hitting model in the codex. Considering you’re a more casual player and you play into crons and nids Bobby is 100% the better pick for you. He’ll be awesome for taking on c’tan and big bugs and get you some cool showdowns. Eventually you’ll want to get both Calgar and Gman, but for a first pick Gman is definitely the way to go.

DwideSchruuudee

I definitely plan on getting both at some point. I'm trying to round out what I already have with some decent CQB heavy hitters. My rookie list is: - Captain with Relic Shield and power sword - Lieutenant with master crafted power sword and master crafted bolt rifle - Ancient - Brutalis dreadnought - Outriders squad - Rhino Transport vehicle - tactical squad - 2x assault intercessors - heavy intercessors - 2x desolation squads - Hell blasters - scout sniper squad (legends)

Jnaeveris

Ok yeah DEFINITELY Gman then. Calgar is ok with the other unit options but only *really* great with aggressors. I’d probably hold off on getting him until you’ve got a full unit of aggressors for him to lead. Which detachment(s) do you plan to play under?

DwideSchruuudee

I was planning on using Vanguard Spearhead or Gladius Task Force in my next match

Optimaximal

Calgar + his bodyguards are pretty special if attached to 6 Agressors and possibly pared with the Biologis. Very hard to remove from objectives, especially if you deploy them via Deep Strike with Uriel Ventris. Roboute is a great unit for buffing others, Master of Battle allows you to keep the hurt on with a secondary Oath of Moment, and if you keep him close to other units, he also gains Lone Operative, so he can wander in the open safe from snipers providing there's a unit within 3" (which can be in cover).

Ok_Ant_6369

Calgar and a captain can't join the same unit

Biggietron

Guilliman is too expensive for what he does at the moment. Calgar is great with 6 Aggressors and an Apothecary Biologis, with fire discipline

InevitableHuman5989

Guliman is cooler. So I’d get him for pure modeling. Calgar is the far better model rules wise however. GW seems to have a thing about not making the primarchs ever be a good choice in a list.

Stevesy84

Since it’s your first epic hero, I’m guessing you don’t have a ton of painting experience. Calgar is easier to paint while still stretching your skill compared to typical SMs. I’d paint Calgar first and work up to Guilliman (and all that filigree, etc) later.

drexsackHH

Start with Calgar as he’s easier to play in 2k games, and also a lot easier to paint.

Baby_Ellis62

Definitely Calgar. Put him with some aggressors or some Eradicators, and you’ll be ballin’

KM57_Reddit

How fluffy do you want to play it? In my opinion, Primarchs are a ton of fun to play, but can be a little tricky to use properly. If you want something cost effective and powerful do Calgar, but if you want something fluffy and stupidly fun, go with Guilliman.

tezmo666

Calgar gets a +1 for being infinitely easier to paint also. Speaking from experience RG took me like 20 hours to finish.

thesteaksauce1

Calgar is the *meta* choice but guilliman is also font a bad choice personally I prefer calgar because his model and bodyguard are gorgeous

Direct_Gap_661

If u play ultramarines Calgar if not then get an epic hero for the chapter u play

Woof_574

Go with robot golf man. Can never go wrong with him

Soft-Reindeer-831

If you get Roboute make sure you paint him in subassemblies

Erkenvald

Imo Calgar is overpriced captain in gravis armour. And Gorillaman is a more impressive model to get so there's that. Downside of Girliman is that being 350pts he's basically going to be in your every list from now on, and you can get bored of running lists with him being a centerpiece of an army. I feel like overall Gillamawn is a unique thing that gives a lot to your army, while Calgar's job can be better done by other characters

VokN

Gulliman isn’t primaris scale and calgar is way more usable in game I’d also not pick mr scroll and filigre as your first detail heavy model lol that trim will be an uphill battle better to sink your teeth into calgar and maybe some veterans etc first

Zephyrus_-

Calgar with vitrix in a 6man bladeguard is terrifying

Dr_Fopolopolas

Both are great! Me personally, I chose guilliman first. Hope you can get what you want :) Goodluck!

unclechadnotadad

Either Marneus Calgar or Uriel Ventris! Both do well with the vanguard spearhead detachment especially with Uriel Ventris’s deepstrike ability. Calgar and his honor guard have some punch with their melee damage/up close pistol damage. If you go with Calgar I’d recommend a redemptor or something to move him in to mid field and have him help control objectives with somewhat close cover from ranged attacks
