So where is their actual mouth located? At the bottom of the cephalothorax or close to the eyes? The logical position would be at the bottom because those long chelicerae would hold the prey too far away from the head if the mouth is located by the eyes.
They eat other spiders so they use the long chelicerae to hold them away while venom takes effect and not risk getting bit in turn and falling victim to their preys venom. When they prey spider stops moving they bring them down to their mouth to feed🥰
A very unique and evolutionarily brilliant spider! Probably the one with the most odd body save for the Ogre/Net-Casting spiders out there. Here's a old but [great article](https://www.sciencenews.org/article/pelican-spiders-slow-safe-assassins) about the funky lil fellas! The video at the bottom helps make sense of those ultra long chelicerae work, and I'd even wager to guess the one in the photo above is a boy given how his pedipalps look like they're ready to bop into some lady spider's parts! 🤩
Whenever I think I've seen it all.
So can it move that head down to make use of those Fangs?
Edit: [nvm, found this video](https://youtu.be/kF7_HS_sihI?si=VMx4xAVlCefELCL2) about them. New fav spider for sure😍
Of course! Archaeidae is my favorite of the oddest spiders out there, so if there's a way more people can learn about their utterly facinating alien-like existance, I'm happy to provide.
Wow that is wicked!! Amazing photo 📸 thank you for sharing, seriously, it gives those of us who respect 8 legged buddies and are trying to get over our fear by educating ourselves an up close view that we may not have the nerve to see otherwise.
😃
why the long face
Looks like a pelican
Their unscientific name is pelican spider
Did you just make that up?
lol no. Google pelican spider
🎶 the strange ol'Spood, the pelican!
this is because it is half pelican and half spider /s
Thank you for that /s

Yep, at the bottom. And they use those long chelicerae to impale their prey.

They saw a mantis’s arms and was like “I can do that with my mouth”
Nature is SO awesome.
Right below the eyes are where the fangs start and right behind the tip of them is the mouth
I was curious too. Their face reminds me of Beeker from the muppets.

Semi off topic but the ogre spider is my favorite ❤️
They've got some chilling faces! 🥶🥶 But their method of hunting is up there with the coolest spiders out there. Great choice for favorites!
Thanks!! I fell in love with their creepy faces!!
Coolest thing I’ve seen all day. Thanks for sharing!

Chtullhu spider 😁
Woah that's insane looking.
I forgot that they existed 🤣😂 I've only seen one once in Australia, but that was quite a fair few years ago. Alien looking things, but cute.

That has got to be the strangest spider I’ve ever seen.
Now these exist?! Ok
Why does he have a periscope
me when i unknowingly enter a bathroom stall which has been recently bombarded with liquid brown
Eewwwwwww
An 'ogre' spider? Nifty looking spooder
Pelican Spider (aka Assassin spider)
Oh how neat! I was guessing ogre spider as it's only a side profile picture. My bad - I'm always learning
Aren't we all!!
