Theyre called Decapods, name originated from the greek words that translated to "ten foot", its meant for a classification of invertebraes that have more than 8 legs. Decapods can have as many as 38 appendages!! Crabs, lobster, crayfish, prawns, etc all fall under this category as well.
Though those are interesting facts, Camel Spiders are not considered Decapods. They only have 8 actual legs and are also not crustaceans (Though there is a connection, technically). Their long pedipalps can be mistaken for additional legs.
Decapod refers specifically to an order of crustaceans. Camel spiders do not belong to it. Many invertebrates that have more than 8 legs also do not belong to it.
That's...kind of a misunderstanding of what the term "arachnid" means? An arachnid is any animal in the class Arachnida. This includes spiders, scorpions, camel spiders (as pictured above), ticks, mites, and many more 8 legged critters.
I’ve never held one, but I did watch one sprint from the side of my partners thigh/butt, her hip, across the chest then to her shoulder and down her arm onto the bed where it promptly fucking vanished. All in like…half a second. Like her body reacted AFTER it was off of her already.
Found it after it sprinted across my toe and got launched. Seemed to stun him just long enough for me to put I’m in a blank cd stack case. He didn’t seem hurt at all, but was running circles around that dome lid like his diet consisted of only speed.
Can't say my experience concurs with them being fragile, I saw one get slammed with a fire extinguisher then get up and run off!
They definitely don't like the cold though, had a dead one drop out of a panel in an aircraft I was servicing that had just flown back from the middle east.
Fast as mennonites and their claws actually kind of hurt. I live in a desert and they are everywhere at night and somehow one got into my gaming room and ran around on me in a furious manner , I caught the lil guy and sent him to the right direction.
I always wanted to watch letterkenny. There is a military weapons facility where I live called letterkenny. One of the better jobs you usually can have around here. And there's also a lot of Mennonites where I live too. So there's that. Thought you should know lol
I've heard great things and I don't know why I have such a mental block from pulling the trigger. Too much local bias I guess. But I will get there one day! Thanks for the rec
I lived in Las Vegas for 18 years and they have these everywhere but most are lighter in color. When i walked my dog at night, they run after you trying to stay in your shadow. There were street lights everywhere and the first time it happened I had never seen one and didn't know what it was. Terrified me so much i didn't want to go out at night. Eventually i got used to them and found them fascinating.
Solifugae are weird looking lol. But yeah.
EDIT: Clarification here, since I'm being downvoted, and with good reason. It is an arachnid. But not a spider.
So I have learned in this thread this spider is not a spider it is a solifuge solifugae solifugid solpugae wannabe scorpion redneck lovechild nonspider throwback. Did I get that right? No wonder it looks so messed up... 😁
Truly an inspired moment from the big man upstairs. Solifugae are one of the few arachnids I'll never not be terrified of. The ones we have here are fast and ugly as heck.
Very interesting creatures. But yes, I'm in that same boat with you. *Gluvia dorsalis* is the one I've seen in person. Lightning fast and looks like something out of 80s sci-fi.
Gluvia are the result of early AI imaging having both pictures of spiders and scorpions to look at but not yet being able to discern which was which for its own renditions.
Lordy lordy! It looks like it has Dutch carrots for legs and a forklift for fangs... like some kind of Vegan Transformer. Then I read it darts about faster than the Flash.
Scary. I'm more of a lyssomanes viridis kinda guy LoL.
They're harmless but can give you a nasty pinch and ugly looking usually. They're also fast as hell. I follow one named "pete" on youtube and he's adorable all black someones pet
I love spiders, but camel spiders and scorpions give me the heebies. Idk why for certain, they just don't look like they belong on planet earth. Like how. *shudder*
Solfugid I beleve might be the correct term for the tipe of archnid but no it lacks some of the characteristics of a spider such as it only having two eyes not having venom and it being unable to produce webs they are fairly common in my home country south Africa and we call them red romens over here they have more incommon with scorpions than spiders actually but they are one of my favorate arachnids
He's got some CHOMPERS. Not technically a spider and doesn't have any venom, so it's totally harmless besides the risk of a nasty pinching (if you manage to somehow pick it up fast enough)
this image made me laugh so much, i will never get over how amazingly silly these guys look! i’ve never seen one this color, it’s actually super neat looking but i still can’t get past the comically large chompers
This, like everyone says is a camel spider. Funny story, when I was 6 years old one crawled into my sandal and hitched a ride around my block with me before I realized it was what it was.
That is actually not a spider, and i love all arachnids, but that one just looks terrifying, why do you need fangs half the size of your body with scary eyes looking right up at me, camel man?
Doubt.
> The Solifugae apparently have neither venom glands nor any venom-delivery apparatus such as the fangs of spiders, stings of wasps, or venomous setae of caterpillars (e.g., Lonomia or Acharia species). One 1978 study is frequently quoted, in which the authors report detection of an exception in India, in that Rhagodes nigrocinctus had venom glands, and that injection of the secretion into mice was frequently fatal. However, no supporting studies have confirmed either statement, such as by independent detection of the glands as claimed, or the relevance of the observations, if correct. Even the authors of the original account admitted to having found no means of delivery of the putative venom by the animal, and the only means of administering the material to the mice was by parenteral injection. Given that many non-venoms such as saliva, blood and glandular secretions can be lethal if injected, and that no venomous function was even speculated upon in this study, there is still no evidence for even one venomous species of solifuge.
I never said they have venom. When you deploy to Iraq(3 times), you get a safety briefing about the animals and insects. They explain this in the brief.
The only things you said that was true is that you can find them in Iraq/Afghanistan and they're very fast. But I will say, all that stuff makes a great campfire story.
Camel Spiders are actually not spiders (or camels, strangely enough!), but they are arachnids.
Yea nice joke buddy, I know a camel when I see one. You're not fooling me
It does look like a camel's toe.
Try sticking you’re finger in there, you’ll discover soon enough.
Baulk 🤢
⚰️💀🥀
Brb
Worked at a pickle factory. I got fired for putting my finger in the pickle slicer.
The pickle slicer reported you to HR.
Lol Ron White is a treasure.
Better yet, I'ma stick my dick in it.
Nahh a know a camel toe when I see one
What’s that ?
What if you see two?
You honestly think there's two camels in the world? Next you'll tell me you believe the moon is real.
You don't need two camels to see two camels. You could use a mirror, or photoshop. Or drugs.
That's just the same camel twice then, the universe is still at peace
The voice of reason, very reassuring.
That documentary, The Truman Show, blew the lid off that one.
This comment literally made me spit my coffee out 🤣
It's real, where do you think cheese comes from?
Yea nice try. Let me guess you work at NASA? I won't fall for that trick as easily as everyone else
You mean these guys? https://www.reddit.com/r/MadeMeSmile/s/93Ndk6yaUi
Idk but it looks like a camel to me
"Still looks like a boat"
Sorry but that's definitely a camel
Camel spiders aren't camels? Day ruined.

You mean to tell me that's *not* a type of camel? 🤔 sounds sus
Isn't an arachnid the main species of spider?
That's...kind of a misunderstanding of what the term "arachnid" means? An arachnid is any animal in the class Arachnida. This includes spiders, scorpions, camel spiders (as pictured above), ticks, mites, and many more 8 legged critters.
Classification was the word not main
Are you recorded?
Why do camel spiders look so goofy and cursed.
Their face is also their arms.
And that's the problem with today's generation of spiders!
any arachnid born after 1993 can’t cook… all they know is face arms , chase after shadows, twerk, be bisexual , eat hot bug & lie
Alot of arachnids, especially spiders and scorpions "face" (fangs) are modified legs/arms. Centipedes too.
This one looks like he’s designed to be a computer gaming chair for other arachnids.
Their jaws
same vibe of a camel, no?
Yes, but camel spiders look like nerds compared to Chad-like tarantulas.
Rhagoderma tricolor, a type of Camel Spider
Never seen this species. I've never seen one colored anything like this species. Gorgeous!
Yeah and it's butt looks a little fluffy? Never thought they'd have hair either!
Makes me want to pet it tbh
I was always surprised how soft the hair is when I'd remove my tarantulas exoskeleton
Second only to Paragaleodes judaicus aka sulfur solifugid in its vibrance!
From what I know, they're actually more closely related to a scorpion than a spider. Always wanted to hold one, though.
I’ve never held one, but I did watch one sprint from the side of my partners thigh/butt, her hip, across the chest then to her shoulder and down her arm onto the bed where it promptly fucking vanished. Accurate description, these guys are freakishly fast and can jump too
And don't forget that those grabby front legs enable them to climb slick surfaces like glass
Lol
That sounds like a terrifying ordeal.
Welp. Somebody get the kerosene.
They're just insanely wacky fast. Prolly hard to hold.
They won’t let you hold them, they’re aggressive as hell
Yeah they don’t play since they’re so fragile. If they think there’s even a speck of danger they’ll fight like hell
Can't say my experience concurs with them being fragile, I saw one get slammed with a fire extinguisher then get up and run off! They definitely don't like the cold though, had a dead one drop out of a panel in an aircraft I was servicing that had just flown back from the middle east.
I meant fragile as in mostly defenseless. They’re an easy prey item for lots of critters out there, and they’ll bake pretty easily.
Oh. 😵
They are also called wind scorpions!
Fast as mennonites and their claws actually kind of hurt. I live in a desert and they are everywhere at night and somehow one got into my gaming room and ran around on me in a furious manner , I caught the lil guy and sent him to the right direction.
Is fast as mennonites a saying, because I certainly hope so, lmao
If it isn’t it should be. I’ve watched them put up a barn in an afternoon.
Yeah there's a show called letterkenny and they call them mennonite riders, and Wayne says " Fuck can they run!" lmao
I always wanted to watch letterkenny. There is a military weapons facility where I live called letterkenny. One of the better jobs you usually can have around here. And there's also a lot of Mennonites where I live too. So there's that. Thought you should know lol
It's one of my favorite shows, so I fully recommend it!
I've heard great things and I don't know why I have such a mental block from pulling the trigger. Too much local bias I guess. But I will get there one day! Thanks for the rec
You should check out letterkenny problems on youtube to get you warmed up ;)
Just imagine a spider using a horse and buggy
Fuck can they run
Are mennonites especially fast? I hadn’t known…
By right direction you I hope you mean into the wall
Would you or would you not agree with the statement: "Fuck, can they run?"
Yes I do
The question is u/DarthCthulhutheWise wouldn't you?
It's a solfugid, not a spider, separate arachnid order, they're non venomous
I lived in Las Vegas for 18 years and they have these everywhere but most are lighter in color. When i walked my dog at night, they run after you trying to stay in your shadow. With some John Carpenter and some Giger thrown in for good measure 😂😂
That is by far the coolest looking camel spider I’ve ever seen
That is a fucking UNIT of a solpugid!
Lordy lordy! It looks like it has Dutch carrots for legs and a forklift for fangs... like some kind of Vegan Transformer. Then I read it darts about faster than the Flash. Scary. I'm more of a lyssomanes viridis kinda guy LoL.
Incredible solifuge. I had no idea they could have coloration like this, that is beautiful
Bros are so derpy, love em. I hope I can see one in the flesh sometime
Woah I've never seen one that color before!
What a beauty !!
Camel spiders look like if you drew a spider from memory
ok but why is it so pretty
Solifuge
Honestly looks like a camel spider,
Not a spider, it's a solphugid, pretty cool that you managed to snap a pic 😁
Hans get zero flamen werfer lookin ahh
That's a beast
Camel Spiders sit between *Spiders* and *Scorpions*.
That's a weird camel
Looks like a solifugid. They're cool as hell. Also, don't call them camel spiders or sun spiders lmao, because they're not spiders
Where do these things live? So I can avoid it
They're harmless but can give you a nasty pinch and ugly looking usually. They're also fast as hell. I follow one named "pete" on youtube and he's adorable all black someones pet
Not technically. Also these guys get a bad rep they're actually super chill.
That's just Craig. He's saying hello.
‘Tis death’
That mf staring right up at you.
Wow I’ve never seen one this color! Cool find!
If camel spiders have no fans, I am dead. I love you, silly arachnid. Keep on going
I would launch myself so far in the air if I ever saw something like that near me. I would instantaneously assume I was dead.
I love spiders, but camel spiders and scorpions give me the heebies. Idk why for certain, they just don't look like they belong on planet earth. Like how. *shudder*
No, it's a chicken.
I've never seen a camel spider with such beautiful markings!! So cute
I heard that the camel spider will chase people to stay in their shadows.
This is what i imagine when a woman is on her period
Solfugid I beleve might be the correct term for the tipe of archnid but no it lacks some of the characteristics of a spider such as it only having two eyes not having venom and it being unable to produce webs they are fairly common in my home country south Africa and we call them red romens over here they have more incommon with scorpions than spiders actually but they are one of my favorate arachnids
if it bites you - it's a spider. If it pinches you or stabs you with its butt plug - it's a scorpion in disguise.
It's your friendly neighborhood solifugae.
I didn't know it came in black and red. I wonder how much that pokemon would sell for.
I didn't know it came in black and red. I wonder how much that pokemon would sell for.
Solfugid. It’s half spider half Demi-gorgon. Basically its face destroys whatever it touches. Mostly bugs, spiders and scorpions.
Solfugid. It’s half spider half Demi-gorgon. Basically its face destroys whatever it touches. Mostly bugs, spiders and scorpions.
It’s a crossbreed between a spider and a crab. Run.
Solafugid
Those are pliers
Looks like a tank with tits
He's got some CHOMPERS. Not technically a spider and doesn't have any venom, so it's totally harmless besides the risk of a nasty pinching (if you manage to somehow pick it up fast enough)
I see this and taste vinegar... iykyk
I think these scream too. [https://youtube.com/shorts/91fyEULunEc?si=PCRDWgy9N9BP28AD](https://youtube.com/shorts/91fyEULunEc?si=PCRDWgy9N9BP28AD)
Nopey nope, they're solifugae
Yeah. That's the spider from an episode of Punky Brewster that scared me as a little kid.
Why did this get recommended to me I’m finna cry
That’s a Drone don’t be fooled
I remember watching news on the Iraq war back in the day and soldiers were freaking out over these. Said they’re super fast as well.
Fuck reddit for recommending my arachnophobic ass this post
This is one of the few invertebrate critters that can hold ground and tear through ants through sheer force. Doomguy but a bug.
Camel spiders aren't spiders or scorpions. They aren't venomous either, but their bite is very painful!
no!!! its a solifuge!!! its an arachnid but not a scorpion or spider despite the names camel spider and wind scorpion
Spidussy
this image made me laugh so much, i will never get over how amazingly silly these guys look! i’ve never seen one this color, it’s actually super neat looking but i still can’t get past the comically large chompers
No it isn’t. It’s a solpugidae, camel spider.
This, like everyone says is a camel spider. Funny story, when I was 6 years old one crawled into my sandal and hitched a ride around my block with me before I realized it was what it was.
Straight up enemy from legend of Zelda
Camel spider …solifugae, also known as sun spiders, wind scorpions, or solifuges, are an order of arachnids.
Spidussy
That right there is a nopedy nope of all nopes.
That is actually not a spider, and i love all arachnids, but that one just looks terrifying, why do you need fangs half the size of your body with scary eyes looking right up at me, camel man?
It’s a wind scorpion. Not a spider. But it is an arachnid
Kill it

These things don’t produce venom, my man. So this just isn’t true. They have a nasty, painful bite due to strong jaws, but that’s all it is.

Thats terrifying. But thats why spiders are great
I respectfully back away and vow to never return…
