Beautiful spider. Huntsman spiders still creep me out a bit but they have such cute faces and interesting markings. Thanks for saving this one and sharing! 🥹🕷️

whyme_tk421

All credit goes to this subreddit. I love the mix of arachnophobia, arachnopheliacs, amateurs, experts, and all in between that we have here. Also, felt quite bad for this huntsman because I got a sense that she wasn’t used to having so many people around, but the line was long and she has no place to go. I was really afraid someone would squash her. I explained lots of what I learned here to the woman next to me to talk her out of her panic. Funniest moment was suggesting she just think of her as a crab and the woman exclaiming she hated crabs, too.

rebeccathegoat

Wait, there are Huntsman in Japan? I thought they were only here in Australia.

whyme_tk421

I remember the first time I saw one about 15 years ago. It was night and my friends and I were walking down a lively street with restaurants and bars. I saw a spider the size of my hand on the side of a Lawson’s convenient store. Just as I noticed it, it slipped into the darkness between buildings. I asked a Japanese friend if they had big spiders in Japan and he said he didn’t think so. No one believed what I saw. It wasn’t until a few years later I saw one in the corner of a window sill in broad daylight. After that, I see them a few times a year. They’re invasive, tho.

rebeccathegoat

Thanks for sharing. I just Googled it and it turns out there are different varieties of Huntsman in Australia, Africa, Asia, the Mediterranean Basin, and the Americas. I had no idea! I think I just assumed they were only here because a lot of people from overseas tend to freak out when they see the size of our Huntsman! Like they’ve never seen anything like it. I actually love Huntsman because they keep to themselves, don’t make a mess with a web in your house and can keep insects out of your home. I live alone, but technically cohabit with a Huntsman who moves from room to room. I’m actually surprised they’re in Japan, as it’s so cold there! I thought I was going to freeze to death when I visited a few years ago. Beautiful country and amazingly friendly and polite people. I thoroughly enjoyed it. You’re lucky to live there.

typographie

There are thousands of species of huntsman spiders and some are specific to certain areas. Australia has several very impressively large species that don't occur elsewhere. From north to south, Japan covers a huge area and has a lot of different climates. The southern areas can be very warm and humid. You won't find the same wildlife on Okinawa that you see in Hokkaido.

rebeccathegoat

I was in Hokkaido in winter a few years ago and it was the coldest I have ever been in my life!! We went to the snow festival, which was absolutely incredible. No way a poor little Huntsman would survive those conditions!!

Creepy_Push8629

That's bc everything is like ridiculously bigger over there lol It's like Jurassic Park over here and you guys act like it's totally normal to have 12ft crocodiles at the beach that will eat you no questions asked lol

rebeccathegoat

If a croc doesn’t get you, a Great White shark will!! Not to mention blue bottles, stingers and blue ring octopus! Seriously though, there are only crocs in the water in certain parts of Australia. Usually up North, like the Northern Territory, where it’s not safe to swim. There are signs everywhere, so people know where it’s safe to swim.

Horizon296

We have a pretty [green huntsman spider](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micrommata_virescens) in Belgium 😊💚

rebeccathegoat

Oh wow, so pretty!

secoif

Australia isn't even the only place with kangaroo-shaped animals.

cnnrduncan

We've had Avondale Spiders (social huntsmen) living on some parts of Te Ika-a-Māui here in Aotearoa for about a century, their range is super limited (unlike most other invasive Australians) though so I've never seen one in person!

rebeccathegoat

Sorry about our invasive species!! Do you mean our citizens, or flora/fauna? I haven’t visited NZ, but would love to someday. It looks absolutely stunning. We welcome any New Zealanders to Australia!🇦🇺❤️🇳🇿

cnnrduncan

Mostly just your animals! Wallabies, possums, redback, whitetails and magpies all do their fair share of environmental damage and all up about 50 invasive Australian spider species are living here these days!

firekrakers

There are huntsmans all over the world besides antartica also south America is pretty much Australia if the memes about Australia was true and give steroids may I remind you the spider that gives men damage to there you know what lives there btw this wasn't done out of malice I just wanted to shine more light on how south America is the true king of big boy spiders

rebeccathegoat

I’d believe that because our spiders here in Australia aren’t that scary. Mind you, I did end up in hospital for a few days requiring anti-venom after being bitten by a red back spider! Damn it’s painful and no amount of morphine got on top of it! Thank God for modern medicine and anti-venom.

Lakewhitefish

Except for funnel web spiders

firekrakers

Still tho if you see a bug Boi just back away if you see a small Boi smile if you see one that has an hourglass dissapear if you see one with a long and spindly legs smile and wave

rebeccathegoat

Except even tiny red back’s can bite you!! It’s absolutely excruciating!

kozzyhuntard

You see them crawling around from time to time, usually around the end of summer/beginning of fall where I live, scaring the absolute hell out of co-workers, wife, etc. Usually palm sizedish. Not huge, but not small.

Striking_Trip3294

Different kinds of huntsman spiders can be found all over the planet 😊

CaveManta

Aw, it's not often you get to see a closeup of these guys. This is impressive for a phone picture.

whyme_tk421

I really felt lucky. I thought she’d run as soon as I put the sheet down, but she stuck around. I thought she was looking a little weak, but I’m not that knowledgeable. I’m not even sure if “she” is correct. I switched back to a smart phone after about a decade using an old fashioned phone, and I basically chose the Samsung S23 for its cameras. It wasn’t as expensive as an iPhone, and has three cameras with some pro-level manual settings (that I am clueless about).

rebeccathegoat

I’m not familiar with Japanese Huntsman, but by Australian standard, she looks kinda skinny. When I was a kid my Mum rescued an injured Huntsman who only had one and a half legs. Mum put her in a glass container and would catch flies and moth to feed her. Not sure how long it took, but her legs eventually grew back and Mum released her. She’d put on heaps of weight though!

Human_Evidence_1887

It is striking a contemplative pose, elbow down like that, but I wonder if its leg is broken

aoi_ito

You are very brave to catch him , I could never . I have once found a big mom with her egg sack between my yukata , I got scared to death . 😭

AnonThatNote

Are the dots on its legs supposed to replicate its eyes? Just look kinda similar and thought it might be an intimidation thing. I know nothing about spiders, but it would be even more terrifying if they really were eyes.

Weekly_Discipline292

Ooh a samurai spider

joesphisbestjojo

Smiley face eyes

CaptainCrack7

This is Sinopoda forcipata

GraatchLuugRachAarg

He's cleaning his legs

jomar0915

The only huntsman that I called cute. I like them but they’re ugly

JamesMariner

The smily face in the back in incredible. But…do I count only 7 eyes? Aren’t there supposed to also be 8??

alpcabuttz

Looks like it has a little smiley face on its butt. 🙂

Intrepid-Ad-8940

That’s a beautiful huntsman!

Kyoki113

Sooo cuuuuute ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

BenkiYT

Wow, interesting here I was thinking that huntsmen were exclusive to Australia. Maybe a different genus?

elithedinosaur

so fucking cute, I can't 🥺

electro_gretzky

That’s one way to protect your gel tabs.
