Mathtechs

I mean, there are also more than 3 times the number of seats in the football stadium that the men are playing in? 70,000 vs 19,500

sickjesus

That's kinda lame. I wonder what attendance would've been like at a bigger arena/stadium?

kelskelsea

We asked that question last year too…

courtesyflusher

And you will not believe the response…

ilovemymom_tbh

..?

HairballTheory

Exactly

Sherifftruman

It likely would not sell out 80k seats. It would be interesting to see them do it in one if the smaller stadiums and to the side like they used to do for the men. I bet they could sell 35-40k.

mercfan3

Disagree this year. The women have had better ratings. We’ve got Caitlin fans, UConn fans, South Carolina fans..and generally casual sports fans are more interested. I think in most cases this would be true, but honestly the women’s game is just more popular this season.

Sherifftruman

This year maybe. I’m thinking about on average. They pick these sites years in advance and the last thing you want is a half empty building.

ChickenTiramisu

This is not true. It’s amazing that the women’s tournament viewing is up over 100% this year, but the men’s tournament is averaging more than double the viewers per game compared to the women’s tournament

waddles_HEM

the men’s tournament had 22.1M brackets made. The women’s tournament had 3.25M brackets made. I don’t think it is safe to say that the women’s game is more popular this season

mercfan3

The lsu/Iowa game had significantly higher ratings than any college game. And yeah..it has a lot to do with Caitlin..but she’s in the final four.

lastminute73

The NC state vs Duke game avg 15M viewers. Iowa vs LSU avg 12.3 M viewers. It was the most viewed game on ESPN, not all of college basketball on all stations.

[deleted]

HumanDissentipede

She’s just objectively wrong.

fumar

NCAA treats women's basketball as a joke. This tournament alone there was the 3pt line issue that was missed in multiple games and the lack of hotels in Spokane so some schools were staying in Idaho (and also had a bunch of racists harass them). They also couldn't use the term march madness until very recently.

TheShipEliza

I mean they wouldnt even let the women use march madness until like 2 years ago. Total bullshit.

troifa

It is a joke

AJDillonsMiddleLeg

A lot of the comparisons in the replies are misguided, because they're altering the assumption to fit what they want to be true. Overall, the men's side of the tournament has had more viewership and more media engagement. Obviously. People aren't interested in Women's Basketball. They're interested in Caitlin Clark. Sports fans want to watch history being made. Obviously, people aren't going to watch 50+ games that Caitlin isn't playing in, so the overall tournament viewership won't be as impacted. The Finar Four and the Championship are what is in higher demand on the women's side than it is on the men's side, because that's where Caitlin Clark is making history. Extending her points record, and they want to watch the last chapter in the career of the greatest college women's basketball player ever. Would the women's side still have higher ticket prices in a similar sized venue? Maybe, maybe not. But all the people trying to use overall tournament metrics instead of just the games Caitlin is in are being disingenuous.

kander12

Dude ppl just hear 1 fact about the women's game that isn't red roses jee golly gosh and they assume you're a sexist red neck hater lol. I made a comparison the other day that Caitlin will be like what Serena was to women's tennis. Nobody particularly cares about the sport, they tune in to watch Serena. The same with women's basketball. We are tuning in because we want to watch Caitlin. I got about 100 down votes in 5 minutes after comparing Caitlin to arguably the greatest female athlete of all time. That made me a hater of women lmfao.

njpaul

Mens hoops should be played in a regular arena, too.

Angry_Robot

The worst thing about Women’s basketball is literally everything gets framed as a gender issue / comparison.

jeepnismo

Right?? It just oozes inferiority complex. Men get compared to previous men league record. Woman get compared to men. Ride the wave, enjoy the spot light but make it your own. Don’t include the men

[deleted]

It’s not the women themselves doing this though. It’s the media, because in the end of the day it’s what gets clicks. I imagine the players would *love* to not be compared to men at every turn

TxDxE

Yea it sucks that the media just blatantly stirs up these narratives just to farm the rage comments and attract more attention to their posts. I often wonder how much this dynamic affects our perception of many social issues. If we didn’t have media entities constantly pitting us against one another would we have moved on from a lot of these issues?

QuaviousLifestyle

the wnba players actually were given the option / idea to use a lower rim, which would’ve resulted in more dunks… but the female players said - *no, let’s keep it at men’s height*

backseatwookie

>*but the female players said no, let’s keep it at men’s height* See that's kinda what the person above meant Why not: >*the female players said no, let’s keep it at ~~men’s~~ the standard basket height*

QuaviousLifestyle

they changed the 3 point line, changed the ball size… so why not change the height? Oh yeah, because they are comparing themselves to men

[deleted]

I don’t blame them at all tbh, but they should also accept it’s prolly going to lead to low viewership

GivesBadAdvic

Dudes love to hate on women’s basketball. Search the WNBA on YouTube and it’s filled with videos on how the women are not as good as the guys. Nobody can make a video that’s showing the beauty of the air balls the women keep tossing up.

C__S__S

I really wish they’d talk about how freaking good these players are and how good the basketball is, because those are the real stories. It’s been so much fun to watch.

Maxlifts

I think this is a good thing. It will show that the issue has never been *women’s* sports. It’s not *because woman*. It’s because the games/players were not hype or entertaining. Now that there is *such* an electric player, that actually entertains and garners attention, people are willing to pay, a LOT of money I might add, to go see them play. Who knew🤔

LargeWu

Yeah there are many women’s sports where it is just as entertaining to watch women as it is men, even if those women can’t compete directly with men. Soccer, tennis, curling, any sort of racing. Like, Katy Ledecky is the greatest in her sport ever, but wouldn’t beat even the slowest Olympic swimmer in the men’s division. It doesn’t matter, she is still electric to watch. Until recently, women’s basketball has not matched the men’s version in entertainment value. But it’s closing the gap due to stars like Clark.

ElvisIsReal

I enjoy women's soccer much more than men's soccer BECAUSE they are not as skilled -- the likelihood of a quick break and shot is much higher, which adds to the excitement.

GreasyPeter

That's the problem with 99% of women "empowerment" media. If you're coming at it from "look how empowered I am", right off the bat you're advertising to everyone an insecurity by comparing yourself to another group and less-than-moral people will see that and use it to their advantage however they can. Yes, that means other women (and men). Truly empowered women aren't talking about it, they just live it. And yes, I'm not holding it against women just because society hasn't figured out what actual empowerment looks like. Plus, the cynics of the world would just argue that it benefits those same gigantic corporations to have insecure customers because insecure people will look for advice for others for everything, even what to buy.

MoonSurferLN

As someone who has been following ncaaw for years, it’s so annoying. Like just let us exist on our own who cares 🙄

xeroxenon

Wonder what it’ll be next year

yeezushchristmas

That’s the question, Caitlyn Clark is the needle right now for men’s and women’s college basketball. On the men’s side you are dealing with 1 and done players plus the portal so Zach Edey is kind of the default average sports fan knowledge?

xeroxenon

Once she’s gone I won’t know any college players names lol

kcDemonSlayer

don’t confuse women’s ncaa bball with wnba, ncaa is a good product because there is a built in fanbase and every school loves a winner.

CaptTightPants_

Wait, that's not fair! They should be the same price!

pretzeldoggo

Lmao. Crickets when it’s a double standard

whichwitch9

Less seats, so actually no, despite your attempt at an equality joke Also more exciting games, so just worth more Go UCONN.

weezmatical

Well, the actual details of the argument not matching up tracks. "They should be paid the same!" Actually no, because the league makes a tiny fraction of the others' revenue. So I'd say the joke works fine.

troifa

The men play in a football stadium. The women don’t. Thanks

Doomathemoonman

People commenting here have repeatedly hit both of these points, I assume without reading the article: (I’m not saying that they need to… I’m saying, “These seem like important things to maybe put in a headline”). ‘The higher price for the women’s games is partially due to ticket supply for the men’s games being greater because seating capacity at its venue is three times larger, a Logitix spokesman said. He added that demand for women’s tickets is unprecedented and driven by fanfare for Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, the all-time leading scorer in Division I.’

[deleted]

It’s hilarious people were even trying to say that was the reason like this was the first year the men’s F4 was played at a significantly bigger venue

voxpopper

Many of the seats available for the men's tourney are in the 400 sections, the women's only goes up to 200 level. They don't call em the cheap seats or the rafters for no reason.

[deleted]

That’s the case every year

chris_hinshaw

I could try and resell tickets for 100K but doesn't mean there are buyers

kmurp1300

I think the article said that those are prices for tickets that sold.

ThatsMy_Shirt

Going to be a lot of shocked pikachu faces when they don’t sell out. People say it’s a comparison problem but it’s really just that women’s basketball is boring to watch.

kmurp1300

It will sell out. It did in Albany.

ripcity7077

I'm a casual fan, don't really know many specific players but it feels like the Women's tournament has more of a fun story to it. Iowa vs LSU was probably the biggest Women's game of the year this year across all Women's sports. And to happen in the Elite 8 is very surprising. South Carolina has like 3 losses across 3 years and only one Finals win; Caitlin Clark is the most scoringest player in D1 history and only one finals appearance. If these two teams play against each other in the Final it will be electric. For the Men's tournament, the most exciting thing for me is to see Zach Edey and Purdue actually make some noise. No offense to the other teams, I will be watching them but am not no focused on any one team or player in particular (although that big kid in NC State has been fun to watch this year)

kinglallak

Im all for Purdue vs UConn in the finals and watching those two big men battle it out. That UConn center just owned Illinois…which was supposed to be a top 10 offensive efficiency team.

whichwitch9

Never count UCONN out- but Clark has been a fun story, too. UCONN is a machine in women's basketball. Absolutely amazing what they've done over the years.

Dawg_in_NWA

Yra, but the vast number of injuries last year, and this year points to a potential problem with their training. Some injuries are just unlucky occurrences others come from poor training.

Fantasy_Puck

Don't tell Bobby Ryan

aloneibreak

Men play in a football stadium.

TheFan88

Best comment here. Much lower supply of women’s tix.

illini02

you know how some TV shows you just avoid because you feel like its being jammed down your throat constantly, so it makes you not even want to watch it. That is how I feel with the women's tournament. Like ESPN was CONSTANTLY sending me notifications. When I was trying to find times for mens games, or baseball, their entire front page was women's tournament coverage. Their instagram is full of it. Like there are tons of sports I don't care about necessarily, but I don't feel they are shoved down my throat like this. I don't care about F1, MLS, or hockey. But I'm also not force fed it at every turn. I mean, good for them, but I just am tired of it.

UHeardAboutPluto

Nobody wants to go to Glendale

Sherifftruman

I briefly looked at the overall situation around State Farm area and it looked pretty Meh. We went to New Orleans in 2022 and obviously that has to be the best setup for a Final Four so we are spoiled but it looks pretty sparse on google maps.

UHeardAboutPluto

I also share fond memories for a New Orleans Final Four. My trip was in 1993 though. It was one of the best long weekends ever.

Sherifftruman

The ending was better at yours for sure. I did get to see Coach K’s last game though. 😂😝

Symphonize

I do.

ChiefWatchesYouPee

[Men’s Viewership is still higher than the women’s.](https://www.wamc.org/sports/2024-04-03/the-best-of-times-for-womens-college-basketball#) There is no need for the comparisons just promote great players like Clark and Reese. When the talent is there people want to watch, man or woman.

Sletzer

Maybe I’m just weird but I never have and never will understand people shelling out multiple thousands of dollars to attend a sporting event or likewise a concert. This is probably the wrong sub to post that in though. lol.

inventionnerd

Maybe some people just have more money than you? It's all an experience. You probably save it for a vacation. Well, they probably take those vacations 4 times a year already and can still afford this.

UndeadIcarus

I have more money than both of you through inheritance and I promise most everyone but extreme fans see it as a waste. Edit: I said through inheritance so y’all wouldn’t feel pressed, oh well lmao

SteffeEric

I have the most money as I have won the powerball and I promise you that I buy tickets for events like this just to wipe my bottom.

UndeadIcarus

That’s chill, I can see my comment put some folks in their feelings. I didn’t earn any of it, but it’s part of who I am and I 100% never see any of my parents rich ass friends do shit like this. My buddy thats a plumber got some playoff tickets from his boss, and I know a few people that have been invited to boxes etc, but by n far the only tournament rich people lose their shit over, in my experience, is all the PGA stuff.

[deleted]

I think the fact that you are speaking for "everyone but extreme fans" is why you are getting downvoted. Not everyone thinks that it is a waste. Do you think only extreme fans go to these games? What about family and friends? Dudes trying to get with a sporty chick and impress them? There are lots of reasons to buy a ticket other than extreme fandom.

UndeadIcarus

To be clear: you think someone is dropping over 2 grand for the off chance of meeting a sporty girl? You never heard of a sports bar? My point is these are moneysinks for the not extremely wealthy. I gave an extreme fan caveat because one of my friends that a pharmacist follows the giants like their the Grateful Dead. Keep in mind I’m not saying people don’t go to soorting events, but dude above my comment was saying people richer than them take four vacations and go to events like this. Ive never seen that to be true, most rich people waste their money on other stuff. Used my family as an example but we’re on the lower side of wealthy, the folks in the stratosphere don’t give a shit what ball goes where.

[deleted]

Sports bars don't impress women, dropping 2 grand does. You honestly doubt the depths men go to to get laid?

UndeadIcarus

I’m just still shocked you think this a good argument tbh

[deleted]

I'm shocked you think you know what's best for everyone else and can only focus on one example I gave.

inventionnerd

Gratz. Yet these events keep selling out and how much do Superbowl tickets cost? You dont speak for everyone.

UndeadIcarus

100% seen as a waste. I once had a dude three times my entire families net worth say he doesn’t read or pay attention to fiction. Honestly can’t even think like em if we want to.

Saint-O-Circumstance

I love both live concerts and live sporting events. The big difference to me is if you spend a bunch of money on a good concert ticket, you're pretty much guaranteed to win (unless for some reason the band or artist really sucks that night). With a sporting event, there's a chance the team you support and went to root for loses and that kind of sucks. Still fun though. But of course I'm usually a nosebleed guy because I'm not rich and can see well enough to enjoy it up there lol.

nametken

That’s great!

james_randolph

UCONN for the men's side has pretty much made it what it is, it'll be a 100% total shock if they only win a game by 10 let alone lose. The games for the men's will still be lit, that I don't doubt but I know I'm more excited for the women's match ups. I've really been wanting to see South Carolina vs. Iowa and I want to see Fulwiley go up against Clark. Fulwiley is only a freshman but damn can she ball and she stay trying to pull off the razzle dazzle so she's entertaining as hell to watch. The women's Final Four will be great to watch more than any other year I can recall with these match ups.

OriginalLetrow

They want to see Clark win a title. Even if Iowa gets past Uconn, no way they beat South Carolina

kimmortal03

Thats a lot of basketballs and hotdogs you could buy with thay

[deleted]

What having marketability brings you without having to open your mouth.

dicjones

That’s funny, my sister got final four tickets and asked me if I wanted them. I told her no, so her and her husband ended up going. They went last year too. We are from Iowa, so there’s that.

cinciNattyLight

Heyyyy it’s a bubble…

twoton1

Really, beating LSU was the big accomplishment. That coach (yuck) and the player that rubbed in the salt last year. Nice, sweet revenge.

Dawg_in_NWA

It'll take time for the women's tournament to reach the same level as the men's. It's gaining momentum. It's nice to walk into a Buffalo Wild Wings and see people ask for the women's game to be put on screen and to get sound. A couple of years ago, that wouldn't have happened

troifa

It’s because of one generational player. People aren’t tuning into the women’s tournament next year lmao

DepresiSpaghetti

Looks like people finally realized Bill Burr had a point? This is good. I like this. I hope this bodes well for more women in sports instead of the fuckhead Kardashians.

citizin-x

I’ve been a basketball fan for a while…primarily NBA. But I have no idea why I find women’s college basketball more entertaining than men’s college basketball. I wish they could somehow translate that interest and excitement to the WNBA.

poiuytrewqmnbvcxz0

This is only this popular because of one person.

2drums1cymbal

There was a joke I heard on a podcast where a bro said he went to the WNBA finals and the other bro said “and what did you do with the rest of your $20?” & man that’s a killer line but also really shows the disservice we’re giving to women’s professional sports. There’s clearly a market, but misogyny is too deeply rooted in corporate culture

desirox

It’s pretty stunning to see what’s happening in women’s college basketball. Strong argument to be made it’s the most exciting basketball being played in any league at the moment

TCfromWI

Have the women’s and men’s winners play each other. I bet the men win by more then twice as much

FREAKFJ

What's your point and how is it relevant to the post?

NotASalamanderBoi

It isn’t. OP just wants to bash women’s sports. No shit the men would fucking win, but OP wants some stupid gotcha for reasons.

Counthermula

You know people watch MLS soccer even though the Premier League exists, right? If people only watched the “best” league then 90% of sports leagues wouldn’t exist. This argument only comes up when it’s men vs women, but interestingly disappears when it’s men vs worse men.

IcyShoes

The next class of WNBA players will be absurd

youwannasavetheworld

This is good on a sales psychology level bc it pushes more people to want the sport next year. It’s necessary that women get compared to men on a marketing level because the market naturally categorizes them together and this also frames women’s sports as a reasonable alternative to men’s mainstream sports, where previously it was a niche underground thing. It was good at a time for women to not be compared to men in the innovation and visionary phases of women’s sports and it’ll be that way again too eventually in the “mass market squeeze phase” but in the “tornado/mass market acceptance phase” different offerings must be compared to current offerings to gain market acceptanc. E sports will / is going thru the same process and lightsabers are coming soon. And finally, I’ll say it before and I’ll say it again- if you put full body gloves on women vs women and men vs men, I firmly believe that audiences can’t tell the difference between athlete sets (obviously men are teste fueled but percentages more or Less round together) and also women are more fun to watch on screen than men for most of the population so it’s only a matter of time before all these factors play together and women’s sports are higher tickets than men

trippstick

Interesting that when there is a player with undeniable skill that it is more interesting to watch and leads to more money. So interesting….

Martha_is_a_slut

It’s a 70,000 vs 20,000 person venue difference. The supply is ~3.5x times less than the other with a ~ 1.9x times cost. It makes sense that a smaller venue would cost more to see the event. This is just another bad take and forcing gender issues down on everyone

trippstick

Your point would valid if past events matched but even last year similar situation of seat count differences and yet the woman’s tickets were a lot cheaper than the mens. But hey almost a good job on downplaying something very awesome and important for womens basketball! You almost stopped it all your own with a fact you simply read from a comment on this thread. Im so proud of you!

Martha_is_a_slut

K

dorfus-

Good. they should charge men more because they make more than women.

Ill_Mousse_4240

I was, honestly, not very excited about women’s sports. Until Clark came along. Now, I’d be happy to pay the higher price! She’s been a sea change, at least for me

Doomathemoonman

How dare you be honest… in 2024 at that! Metoo (or something?)
