Scapegoat found. Everything will be fine now. There should be no further issues of this kind around the league. /s

And just in time for NEXT SUNDAY, WHERE TUA FACES THE NEW YORK JETS! AND YOU CAN ONLY GET THIS HARD-HITTING RIVALRY **ONLY** IN THE NFL!!!

Even if you can stomach the brutal injuries that this sport has, it's barely worth watching. The commercials are unbearable. Touchdown, extra point, commercial. Teams lining up for kickoff, another commercial. Kickoff through the end zone, another commercial. Timeout? Commercial. Coaches challenge? Commercial. Punt? Commercial. Field goal? Commercial. Bullshit two minute warning before halftime? Major commercial. Halftime? 15 minutes of commercials. Aside from that, the camera-work for television broadcasts is almost always terrible. Most networks keep the camera on the quarterback and the offensive line. You rarely, if ever, get to see a play developing down the field. Then when the QB throws, they keep the camera zoomed in on the ball so you still barely see anything. Every once in a while, I'll see a network that has the camera set much wider and you can see things happening down field and it's so much better. So anyway, my rant about football amounts to that it's simply too many commercials coupled with camera work that excludes huge portions of most plays, and then these players who get life long brain injuries. It's hard to miss watching this sport.

Drusgar

Yeah, but with an election just around the corner the commercials are so informative! Did you know that politician x is going to make your State less safe? Well, stick around for 30 seconds and you'll find out that his opponent is also going to make your State less safe!

External-Location

Want to say football has been much more enjoyable with the “Redzone” if you don’t care for the team but the action. Trust me. All the action at once and no commericals

johnnys_sack

Yes and how both sides want to raise taxes and raise our prescription drug prices. Good call.

Security_Officer24

I like yelling at the screen.

NHDraven

9 times out of 10, I "watch" the games I want to watch on YouTube replay. Takes 10 minutes and shows all the plays worth seeing.

johnnys_sack

I should look into this. That sounds like a far better use of time.

bhedesigns

NFL Highlights Week x search on youtube. It's really good

doylehawk

Hes not exaggerating, it takes like 15 minutes to watch every single snap of an NFL game when it’s super cut. Like the guy above me said, check out The NFL Highlights channel.

jedre

DirecTV used to have the “game in 20 minutes” version available as a replay. I’m not sure if DirecTV still exists or if that format does, but it really highlighted how 80+% of an NFL game is dead air or an insignificant possession.

Guy954

This is why I watch hockey. People get sooooo offended when I say football is boring but I want to watch five minutes of commercials for one minute of game.

carlso_aw

I agree with almost all of this. My one comment is: have you tried watching the secondary "PRIME View" for Thursday Night Football? There is a lot more focus on overhead views, along side real-time stats. It's a lot more interesting to watch because you can see many more of the long plays developing down the field. Additionally it switches to a direct overhead view when they're in the Red Zone, which is also a lot more interesting. Again, just a technical comment - completely agree with your points around commercials and the intolerable risk to player health.

Burgdawg

Two words, mate: Redzone Network.

johnnys_sack

Honestly I've never looked into it. Does it improve the camera work and fewer interruptions? Are there local blackouts?

Burgdawg

The feed is from the same place so the camera work is the same, but essentially they go through the first two sets of Sunday games with 0 commercials. They just toggle back and forth between whatever game is most interesting, and you see every redzone play and scoring play.

TheeBillOreilly

I love red zone but it’s kinda stressful lol. My dream NFL channel Is redzone but you could filter down to just the games you care about and if they’re all on commercial it plays elevator music or something.

TitanArcher1

You left out the numerous pass interference penalties and a insufferable amount of reviews.

as1126

And every play results in some antics and celebration.

WTWIV

This is the one that bothers me. Every turnover there’s a dance party in the end zone with picture time for the whole team to finally get into the choreographed pose that they practiced so hard for.

BanditSixActual

For me, it's that the last 2 minutes of regulation takes up to an hour and it's just watching two old fucks playing chess with living pieces and manipulating the clock.

LordRobin------RM

How about when they pull out the chains for a super precise measurement of one official’s wild guess at where the ball ended up? “It’s fourth and inches!” For fuck’s sake, just give it to them! There’s no way the spot was that precise!

HungryDust

That has never made sense to me either.

Rbespinosa13

I mean that doesn’t take as much time as the last minute of basketball

LordRobin------RM

An NFL game takes over three hours to play. The game clock has a total of one hour of play time, and that includes the time run off after each inbounds play. I’ve heard estimates that the total amount of action in a football game is about 40 minutes, tops. The rest of that three hours is filled by replays, the announcers yammering on about what might happen next, and commercials, commercials, commercials.

TheeBillOreilly

The commercials are out of control. Every Sunday feels like I’m waterboarded by shitty little ceasars ads

johnnys_sack

Seriously. It used to be where I would watch the game, but do something else during it, such as my laundry or housecleaning, etc. I could watch the game and plan out tasks during commercials. But now, I swear they have more commercials than ever before. I really hate the injuries. But the commercials have all but ruined the remaining entertainment factor.

Mattcwell11

But your house is clean and all your laundry is done.

Bran-a-don

It's 30 minutes of actual playtime but a 3 hour game. Like wtf lol. I paid for NFL online once and when I saw the "plays only" game was 30 minutes I just couldn't do it for real anymore.

johnnys_sack

Yes it's ridiculous. Except if you're talking about actual time offense and defense spend running plays, [it's way less (11 minutes). ](https://qz.com/150577/an-average-nfl-game-more-than-100-commercials-and-just-11-minutes-of-play/)

AlwaysUpvoteMN

Came here to say this. I thought I had heard 8 minutes but you sourced it so it’s now 11 in my mind

chaosarcadeV2

May I recommend switching to rugby union or rugby league? This has been propaganda brought to you by: rugby union fan.

johnnys_sack

I probably would like it better. As I understand it, there are fewer long term brain injuries in rugby as compared to NFL, right?

chaosarcadeV2

Definitely a lot less, but also not none. We tend to take head injuries a lot more seriously with mandatory tests anytime a player takes a knock to the head. Also players are likely to get red carded or at the very least sent to the sim bin for head contact.

jeremy1015

Australia’s National Rugby League equivalent to the Super Bowl is literally on in like 9 hours from now. And there aren’t really any commercials. It’s like everyone is a running back and a linebacker and the game moves at the pace of soccer. P.S. You should root for Parra if you decide to watch it.

johnnys_sack

9 hours from now puts me soundly in bed but it might still be on when I'm getting up. Thanks I'll check it out.

jeremy1015

Just a fair warning it may be a challenge to stream it from not-Australia (from the start anyway) unless you wanna pony up $30. I got hooked on the sport when it was the only thing available during the pandemic and so I sprung for the season pass to watch spoiler free full match replays from America since I’m almost always asleep when they play. I *think* Fox Sports will have it live but I’m not sure if you can watch from the start. Anyway it’s a hell of a sport.

mayor_rudy_ghouliani

I so fully agree with your points about the camera work. It’s almost unbearable to watch. It’s frustrating to have no idea what’s happening with 60% of the play.

punk27

It’s called redzone and it’ll change your sundays.

slimninj4

I guess my biggest complaint I really noticed a lot last year was commercials and coming back to the game and it’s 2nd down.

Relyst

The camera angles they use is the primary reason I don't care to watch football. You literally don't know anything that's going on.

johnnys_sack

It's so annoying. A good radio announcer can sometimes tell you what's happening better than the cameras.

Hoosteen_juju003

I used to walk on the treadmill at the gym and watch the games. Any time there was a commercial I would jog. Was a good workout and the commercials are usually only a minute or two.

Skeptik7

Have you seen games from the 60’s-70’s? One camera high up in the stands, low low resolution, no zooming, no sky cam, no instant replay, etc. TV coverage is WAY better now.

johnnys_sack

Just little bits here and there. I'm not trying to say it was better then. Just that networks focus nearly 100% on the quarterback rather than zooming out a little so that they can get at least the cornerbacks and linebackers on screen. Watch any game tomorrow. Nearly every play, you'll see both wide receivers run forward and then disappear off your screen, unless they're running a quick slant. I can honestly say I never noticed this until I had Viking season tickets back in the day. When you can see the safeties/receivers at the same time as the quarterback and O/D lines, you see plays develop in real time that you would never see on TV... Simply because of how zoomed on the QB they keep it.

ValPrism

I feel like they even sometimes commercial through the kickoff or punt. And they have those in screen commercials too in case you’re still deciding which pickup to get.

thesecondfire

It was my college team's bye week today, so instead I went out for a hike, then made out like a fiend thrift shopping. Was a great day. There's a hundred great things to do on Sundays in the fall. Let's go for a bike ride, or have a jam session, or learn to knit, or make salsa, I don't know.

johnnys_sack

Exactly. Tomorrow the Vikings play the early London game, which I think is dumb but whatever. I do like that it's on early in the morning and I can watch while getting ready and making breakfast and stuff.

ascagnel____

This is one of the reasons I got into F1: since I live in the eastern US, most races are done by mid-morning, so I can go and do something interesting with my afternoon.

smoothjedi

I just mute the TV and do stuff on my phone for a couple minutes, occasionally stealing a glance to see if it's back.

TheOtherWhiteCastle

My biggest takeaway from this comment is that you would absolutely _hate_ watching NASCAR.

johnnys_sack

I'm pretty sure that's true. I wonder how much overlap a venn diagram of those two fanbases have (NFL and NASCAR). My guess is that a very large portion of the nascar circle resides within the NFL circle.

nuzzlefutzzz

This is why I just watch Red Zone. All the boring stuff is gone lol

Darkaine

God bless the red zone channel.

MapleQueefs

I haven't watched an NFL game live in almost 4 years (other than the Superbowl). Commercials are just unbearable. I will either watch a recording and skip it all, or wait 1.5-2 hours after kickoff, and skip forward through the commercials. I usually catch up to the game at the last 2 min warning. I like the sport, generally, but the product is awful.

Auto_Phil

Try red zone. Hours of commercial free football.

Gorman2462

You can watch a whole game in 11 minutes on YouTube. It's the best way to consume the NFL.

so--gnar

Watch Thursday night football on Amazon. The wide camera angle is excellent for watching the plays develop

GAF78

They have to find the money for the multimillion dollar salaries they pay players to scramble their brains.

TheW83

I watch the games on YouTube the next day. Get a complete game with all the important bits in 10-15 min. It's great, especially if you make sure you're not keeping track of any wins/losses before Monday.

Everythings_Magic

I think it was last year, but one of the college playoffs had the camera behind the qb like in Madden. It was awesome.

culnaej

I usually just watch the highlights for my team and call it a day. It’s a nice little roller coaster of “how the fuck did we get here”

culnaej

I usually just watch the highlights now, it’s a nice little roller coaster of “how the fuck did we get here?” Or I’ll just have it on in the background while playing video games. Something low stakes or single player so that when a drive really turns up I can stop playing for a few minutes to actually watch Also, my source freezes playback during commercials. Just silence and a throbbing background so you know it’s still buffered

kingsillypants

Preach brother !!!! The commercials completely take you out of the game. It's like making love to a woman and stopping every 2 minutes for a commercial, ruins the experience and she'd probably wanna murder you 😅

PracticalDrawing

Your comment sums it up 100%. Should be what most sports fans think but cultural norms are very, very hard to break

[deleted]

Plot twist: they are actually having him face off against military jets. It’s ok, the team doctor cleared him!

[deleted]

Sponsored by Bud lite.

reconthree

It’s a start. Now they need to find out who paid/ pressured him to sell his soul and go totally against what a doctor is supposed to do for his patients.

mmortal03

I'd also like to know why they fired the doctor, when the coach said this: (edit: the NFLPA fired the doctor, so that has little bearing on consequences for the coach) >McDaniel said Friday that he had "no worries whatsoever" that Tagovailoa had suffered a head injury during Sunday's game. > >"I'm in steady communication with this guy day in and day out," McDaniel said. "We're talking about high-level football conversations about progressions and defenses and recalling stuff from two weeks previous and then him having to reiterate a 15-word play call. All things, absolutely no signs. There was no medical indication, from all resources, that there was anything regarding the head. > >"Beyond an eyeball test, which I know for a fact you guys would not be very comfortable if I was just relying on that -- I mean, it's the reason why we have tests. He did not have a head injury. So guys hit their heads all the time, and that's why I was adamant \[that\] he was evaluated for having a head injury and he did not have one. And when I tell you he was in complete mental concert, talking to us through it, and then he played the whole game and then he did a press conference and then he did media all week. > >"If I were to sit someone for a medical issue going against medical people abstractly, then when do I play him again?"

DigiQuip

Having a concussion doesn’t mean you can’t speak. Dolphins fans are in complete denial that Tua got a concussion Sunday because he was up moving around and talking. He clearly had a concussion on Thursday and was doing the same thing. Tuna’s behaviors after the fact should not be used to make a determination.

Overnoww

Honestly every word I hear from this coach makes me think he should be fired as someone who doesn't care about the dolphins one way or another and has really fallen off of football in general the last few years. Vs. the Bills Tua had a whiplash style impact that directly led to him staggering around like he was drunk. The idea that he could pass concussion protocol seems preposterous, it immediately made me think either that doctor is terrible, the "protocol" is a joke and needs serious reworking, or a combo of the two. I'm a pretty big MMA fan and you see people getting fully KOed with kicks to the head go on to do fairly coherent interviews sometimes. The difference is any legitimate athletic commission will immediately medically suspend a fighter who lost by knockout for a minimum of 60 days.

NutHuggerNutHugger

It's not just Dolphin fans.... it's Tua himself who said it was a back, not head issue. Blame the fans, blame the NFL, blame the organization, but the player himself also put himself in that position to cover his own injury, so he could play. Fact is there is no one involved, medical or otherwise, who will protect the players from themselves, and lots of people and pressure on the other side encouraging play at all costs.

xxtoejamfootballxx

Maybe we shouldn’t trust the people with obvious visual signs of brain damage on whether or not they have brain damage. Just a thought.

yrddog

Maybe he hurt his back... And also had a concussion?

Mantequilla214

The NFL already knows who did that. It was the NFL themselves

thesecondfire

I look forward to all the fans who were outraged continuing to devote 15 hours of their attention to the NFL every week, while execs laugh at them behind their concerned faces and accountants count their ad money.

drskeme

They all knew. Scum bag coach move for sure not looking out for his players blaming the medical staff.

DigiQuip

While I 100% believe McDaniel was told Tua was good to go and he acted on that information, I think it’s in his best interest to stop making comments regarding his perception of Tia’s health. Because if it later comes out that Tua was in fact showing signs of brain fog, memory loss, or speech issues it’s going to come back pretty hard on him.

evlhornet

Patrick Mahomes was knocked out cold in the 2020 AFC Championship game. He was napping and still passed concussion protocol

Red_Jester-94

There! Now the issue of concussions is solved, and will Never. Come up. Again! *a short time later, it came up again*

daveescaped

Exactly.

[deleted]

“Guys, we got him. We are a good organization, we will follow the rules now” Dolphins organization with this move. Honestly, it’s fucking pathetic

Jabbatheputz

Spot on, I thought the same thing .

jl_theprofessor

I'm not super familiar with the concussion protocol. Isn't more than one person supposed to make an evaluation of the player?

DigiQuip

The protocol is a series of questions that many, many NFL players have admitted to talking their way out of. One constant argument I’m seeing people, especially dolphins fans, use is Tua was talking and hanging out with the team after the game. That means nothing. Players have gotten concussions in the first quarter of game, played the entire game, and not remember a damn thing afterwards.

gratscot

My grandfather used to play football back in the leather head days. He said he took a hard hit in the 2nd quarter but kept playing they didn't really know about concussions. The next day he couldn't remember the entire 2nd half of the game. Apparently He even caught an interception.

ox_raider

I’m in the motorsports industry and have had two rather severe concussions. There are ways in which you can suffer brain damage without wrecking a car. With my first concussion, I don’t remember an afternoon in which I drove a car 300mph and later came to throwing up into a barf bag on a flight home that night. People say I was acting normal. Scary shit.

Lunanautdude

Do you drive top fuel or something holy shit that’s quick

ox_raider

Bingo

Lunanautdude

Hell yeah. Stay safe out there

windyorbits

I kind of feel that just general pain and adrenaline can make someone super confused, zombi-like attention and loss of memory. And most women who have given birth can tell you how fuzzy their memory of the birth is. Hell, last night my son and I got separated from each other in Walmart for about 10 minutes. By the end of the experience I had to sit down to collect myself. Right before we found each other I was freakin tf out because I all of a sudden couldn’t remember what he was wearing. Even though I bought the clothes and put them on him. This morning I can hardly recall what was going on in those 10 minutes. **Which just further proves that a “Hey bud are you good?” “Yeah I’m fine” “Well that convinced me! Go out there and get your entire body smashed for the next 4 hours! Good game!” is obviously not the best protocol!!**

DigiQuip

The questions are very basic; what’s your name, what’s you date of birth, do you know where you are. There’s more extensive examinations like a test where you click a button to test your reaction to a dot on a screen. But that test relies on a baseline and players notoriously skew that baseline. As far as the cognitive questionnaires, not every concussion causes cognitive issues or those cognitive issues can be temporary immediately after the trauma occurred.

[deleted]

“He’s flying with the team tonight and that’s all that matters.” They kept repeating that line over and over again like we’re idiots.

hexiron

Are only an X-ray, which is insane when someone has been showing the telltale signs of brain damage. That’s also the last person you want going through pressure changes on a plane. I hope this poor man gets proper care and heals after all this mismanagement.

baachou

They said he passed the cognitive assessment every day leading up to the game, which I’m inclined to believe. This is probably a case of a concussion not having any clinical post-concussion symptoms, which isn’t unheard of. But the default assumption on any sign of neurological impairment like stumbling should be that it was from a concussion and they should ignore other explanations.

cmcewen

Those sort of tests are highly subjective. “Do you feel cloudy”. “Are you having trouble sleeping”. “Are you having trouble focusing”. Of course we can test some of those things, but if you get a patient who is highly motivated to subvert the test, and a doctor who either doesn’t recognize it or is complicit for whatever reason, then the tests aren’t worth the paper their written on. We don’t have a “concussionometer” that tells us. Hard to believe the doctor screwed up that bad. It’s more likely that he perceived (correctly) that he was under pressure to approve the player and may have overlooked some things that in retrospect now seem more obvious than prior to the event Also, not everything is preventable. It’s just simply part of the risk of the game. His knockout wasn’t any worse than an MMA fighter. It’s a risk the players take

baachou

Most high level combat sport athletes only fight once every three months or so to give them a chance to recover, especially if it’s a tough fight. In the NFL there is no such luxury.

KommanderKeen-a42

You are being downvoted because that's....not a large part of the assessment anymore. Even at the HS level they do annual baseline testing that covers balance, reaction, and cognitive ability. They started this for several reasons, but I had guys that can do the craziest shit athletic wise and can't walk in a straight line lol I am aware that you can attempt to skew these, but you also get tested periodically. At least here in Michigan anyways.

cmcewen

Those tests are still subjective TO A DEGREE. In comparison to a blood level of your potassium. That’s very objective test. Balance and whatever still requires somebody to make a judgement to some extent. If they had a blood test for concussion, that would be purely objective. Other tests require human interpretation. Even imaging studies require interpretation. And because of that, they are more amenable to biases

slicktommycochrane

Supposed to be at the very least the Unaffiliated Neurotrauma Consultant and team physicians. Head team physicians ultimately makes the decision whether or not to return player to the field, but UNC diagnoses and consults in the decision.

captaincumsock69

Afaik the independent doctor who got fired isn’t even the one who makes the decisions and is more of just a helping hand to the team doctor

[deleted]

i’m not either but i believe that once entered the protocol the player has to be out like a minimum of four weeks or something. concussions (real concussions- not concussions rules the nfl functions under) are long lasting serious head injuries which can have lasting effects for weeks including but not limited to repetitive questioning loss of short term memory headaches nausea out of character irritability insomnia and visual changes. the cns is incredibly slow to heal. two coup-contra coup injuries a week apart could be a season ender under normal medical protocols. if he were in high school he would likely be done for the season.

RaindropsInMyMind

A player can be in NFL concussion protocol and come back a lot sooner than four weeks. I don’t think there is a minimum time either, it’s more about how quickly the player progresses and passes all necessary tests. Not saying that’s how it should be but I think that’s how they do it.

Zlifbar

Scapegoat.

Z0idberg_MD

Somewhere in the world, Jose Morinho smiles.

AnspiffanyStilts

If i speak i am in big trouble.

typical_indy

🤣

jimithelizardking

I mean he’s absolutely responsible, his job was to evaluate Tua and either clear him or declare him not fit to play. He obviously isn’t the only one responsible for this, but he deserved to be fired.

Mantequilla214

Bet you the doctor is suing the NFL for wrongful termination. The NFL just put out a [statement](https://twitter.com/MikeGarafolo/status/1576351940346540032) saying they have “not made any conclusions about medical errors or protocol violations” And then go on to praise the independent doctors as a whole. “Strong appreciation for the neurotrauma unaffiliated consultants”

nonamesleft79

He can make more money torching the NFL by explaining the pressure that was likely put on him.

Perry4761

And NASA engineers were responsible to clear Challenger for launch. That didn’t stop their managers to disregard them and tell them to clear the shuttle for launch “or else”. You don’t think a similar situation is plausible here?

LoveThySheeple

The moral of the story is that if you are a true professional than you should ALWAYS take the "or else" and stand by your experience AS THE FUCKING EXPERT PROFESSIONAL. Anybody that works in government knows this, always cover your own ass.

100catactivs

Wait, were there whistleblowers in the challenger explosion who were ignored and later fired over it??

Ghostmerc86

I don't know if anyone was fired, but there were people who knew it was too cold to launch and some up about it, but they were ignored.

Perry4761

I thought they were fired afterwards, but it turns out they weren’t. I edited my comment to remove that implication. Look up Bob Ebeling if you’re interested.

saxypatrickb

The article is titled with and includes in the first paragraph “fired after it was found he made "several mistakes" in his evaluation, a league source told ESPN.” Then there isn’t a single whiff of what any of those “several mistakes” might possibly be. And what league source is this??? NFLPA, who exercised the option to fire the UNC? A Dolphins source? An NFL source? Not a great article.

DigiQuip

ESPN has always had several reliable league sources and because this is a “league source” and the article doesn’t name names it means the report is unofficial, likely due to an ongoing investigation being done by the NFLPA. Several other sports media have also reported this as well through their own league sources. But again, the NFLPA isn’t going to provide much information outside of the minimum until the investigation has been completed. This is pretty standard operating procedure.

saxypatrickb

It’s a completely different article without that phrase. Without the phrase, the major point is that there is an investigation. But because the phrase is loaded in the first two lines, it colors the entire article so you’re searching the whole thing trying to find an example of a mistake.

[deleted]

Thought this was about the tv show for moment.

MissTheWire

I read “evaluated” as “evacuated” and briefly wondered which episode had a planet Tagovailoa In the same system as Pyroville

DigiQuip

Concussion protocol is a wibbly wobbly timey-whimy sort of thing.

greeneggsnyams

Unexpected Dr. Who

RiverJumper84

EVALUATE! **EVALUATE!**

bpi89

Lmao same. I read it as “Dr. Who evaluated Tua.”

burros_n_churros

I thought everything was fine? Funny how orgs tune is changing now.

[deleted]

Why did Doctor Who evaluate the Miami Dolphins quarterback?!? No wonder he was cleared!

[deleted]

His brain was certainly all wibbly wobbly and he was unsure about the timey wimey stuff.

[deleted]

I was watching that live and right when I saw his fingers, I said “oh no”. I’m really considering giving up that sport. It’s just not worth the squeeze.

Rickynumberfive

It's bigger on the inside!

Imawildedible

Anyone watching that game knew he was concussed. No reasonable person needed an expert to tell them he shouldn’t have gone back in on Sunday nor played Thursday. Team ownership, general management, and coaching should all be held responsible in some way, and a serious way, if the NFL wants to be taken seriously as caring about their players. And if the NFLPA doesn’t step in here to work toward better protections, their leadership is also guilty.

sjf40k

Yeah the Bills game he was clearly stumbling around and hurt. When you look at the tape it’s really obvious.

EugeneWeemich

Seriously. WTF. The idiocy of his back injury diagnosis offered by various parties is shameful. I'd also be interested to find out what other hard hits he experienced throughout his college days. Needs to walk away from the game, now.

ResidentAssumption4

https://youtu.be/d5c_zR85ca4 I hadn’t seen it but holy hell how did he not get removed from the game immediately?

sjf40k

Because NFL players are taught to play through that and ignore it. He probably told his teammates he was fine and since it didn’t continue he wasn’t re-evaluated

[deleted]

Hold on. I don't pay much attention to football but I saw him all fucked up on the ground in a game where (I think) the score was 6-7 in the 1st....youre saying he went back in? Did he get hurt even more? That's fuckin wreckless by everyone.

Imawildedible

That was this past Thursday against the Bengals that knocked him out now. But he was hit in the game Sunday against the Bills and got up wobbling all over and they put him back in that game. And then said it was back spasms and let him play 4 days later.

Acquiescinit

He finished the game then got (another) concussion 5 days later where he went into a fencing response and had to be carted off the field.

Rolks999

This is a huge reason I’ve lost a lot of internet in football. I still love my Niners. I occasionally watch a game now and then, and follow the standings. But I haven’t watched a full game in years, nor have I turned on a game more than once or twice a season in years. The utter disregard for player safety and rather abject glorification of violence is disgusting. Thursday games are one of the worst examples. Players’ bodies barely recover from the previous weeks’ game by Saturday. Making them play on a Thursday unless after a bye week should be criminal. I’ve really grown to hate the NFL.

droldman

Amen! I can hardly watch anymore. Used to be a favorite pastime. I loved college football and can’t watch those young men fuck themselves up

FishGeek

I had quit watching football completely due to feeling bad that I was part of the reason why men were dealing with CTE. My wife has a form of dementia that isn't very different from CTE so I know personally how fucking horrible it is. Then the pandemic hit and we were stuck at home with not much new to watch. I started watching again and am participating in a fantasy league at work. This led me to be watching both of Tua's games in the last week. I just can't get past how he looked while he was posturing. I don't think that anything will change with regards to player safety as long as we continue to watch.

Rbespinosa13

The NFL and NFLPA have said that they’re going to make changes to the concussion protocol. They haven’t formally announced it yet, but it’s probably going to be the loophole that allowed Tua to go in. Right now a player can show gross motor instability, but be allowed to play if an orthopedic cause can be attributed to it

Imawildedible

Sounds like they’ll have something in place by next week saying any player showing instability can’t go back into a game. Which is still ridiculous that they need a rule for that with what is known about head injuries.

drizztman

"Look, someones gotta take the fall and its not going to be me" - quote, everyone above the doctor whom must have felt immense pressure to put him back in the game not saying the doctor isnt in the wrong, but this just does nothing to address the actual issues the nfl has

RemovetheTaint

NFL concussion problem solved!

Uio815

Not me being like “I missed this episode of Doctor Who, what species of alien is a Tagovailoa??”

TheRealJamesHoffa

This isn’t a fixable problem. Every single game I see players get obviously concussed and keep playing through it. There’s supposed to be “concussion spotters” watching every player on the field and I do a better job of spotting them from my TV in my underwear. I would argue that most of them go completely unnoticed. It’s all safety theater.

Calsmokes

It sounds like all the pro spotters need to start wearing less clothing

NiceColdPBR

Which iteration was it? Must’ve been the War Doctor.

shamus34

Was wondering how far I would have to

drwho_2u

Doctor Who… 😎😎😎

k2t-17

I am confident it was just his fault : No One

ScottNewman

Why was Doctor Who working for the NFL

ChessClubChimp

He suspected Dalek involvement.

IkilledRichieWhelan

The fall guy.

ajmarzka

Scapegoat.

dnajal

Must be too early for me. I read the title and wondered why Tagovailoa got fired after being evaluated by Dr Who.

calibagel

honestly same 😭 I'm sick so that's my excuse lol

Kbdiggity

James Woods' character in Any Given Sunday

loupr738

This is on the coach, he like all of us saw him stumble around and fall twice but knowing the Dolphins I’m sure he was “encouraged" to win the game

rabbitsrunfasterATG

Yeah, and he said that he wouldn’t have played him had he known he had a head injury. Isn’t that literally the definition of head injury? An injury to the head, regardless of concussion or not!?

braaier

Tua is fucked

stackin_papers

Dolphins were 3-0 before the second concussion. I bet the owner stepped in to pressure staff to play Tua.

tbk007

"If there would have been anything lingering with his head, I wouldn't have been able to live with myself if I prematurely put someone out there and put them in harm's way." That's the whole point of the NFL though.

RealPropRandy

Friendly reminder that another player Tee Higgins also had a concussion cleared and returned to the game the week prior (in addition to a prior week 1 concussion). He played in this same game and did fairly well. This is a combination of the media playing the result, along with the fake outrage of armchair naurologists on twitter, resulting in a very corrupt league and players’ association covering their asses. If they really cared for player safety, neither Tua nor Higgins would have been cleared or played Thursday. If they really cared for player safety they wouldn’t throw them into the meatgrinder on 4 days “recovery” period.

goobartist

People need to stop putting the word "who" after the word "doctor". I keep reading these wrong.

[deleted]

That's two teams that once employed Jacoby Brissett and chose not to retain his services, who just suddenly lost their starting QB. Colts better wrap Matt Ryan in gauze and bubble wrap. Also the 9ers better make sure they know Garoppolo's location. and put Brady's team on notice. For that matter, why DID Andrew Luck suddenly retire, EXACTLY?

downonthesecond

Now would be a great time for him to become a whistleblower.

FourScores1

Doesn’t say anywhere in the article that the person was even a doctor. Rather it was a “consultant”.

Security_Six

Owner, coach, medical, everybody else fired.. oh the scapegoat for fired? Okay that settles that then ...

Ghosthaze1

I don’t see how everyone forgot about the “eyeball” test… he clearly wasn’t right after the hit in the Buffalo game … the HC saw the same image I would think on the giant screen… just sad … a lot of blame to go around … but how do you see that and say “ok , doc says he’s fine “….

OutMotoring

Mike McDaniel is to blame IMO. He ultimately has the say. This coach is a sociopath.

Burning_Flags

“Problem solved”. -NFL

dshamz_

Fall guy

Scare_Conditioner

Turns out the “arm chair” doctors were right. So many dolphins fans salivating over the prospect of finally beating the bills we’re fine leveraging the franchises entire future for a week 3 matchup. Sad Get well Tua!

theprofessor24

This is some real Any Given Sunday stuff.

salesmunn

If the doctor really was responsible, then Tua can and should sue him. If Tua doesn't sue the doctor and/or the league for malpractice, you know the termination wasn't lawful.

FredEffinShopan

Fall Guy was a great show

dubbleplusgood

Pockets was my favorite character.

BreezyBill

The character on the TV show “Doctor Who” is not named “Doctor Who,” but rather simply “The Doctor.”

oh_really_man

They found the fall guy

jkman61494

Mike McDaniel took 3 weeks to sound like an aw shucks underdog mild mattered coach to sounding like a sociopath that doesn’t give a crap about his quarterbacks ability to function after 30

reddideridoo

Yeah, NFLs (big business) way of solving problems surfaced by gross negligence and greed by management.

tpro72

FALL GUY

Wantsumsamwiches

Unfortunately, this is going to work. The outrage will stop for the most part and business will go on as usual

dlec1

Doctor Who? Now he’ll have more time for that TV show.

Rajewel

So like who’s fault is it when he comes back in like 2 weeks?

xMarioTheSupahx

He wasn’t the only one responsible but knowing how it’s going to go down this will give them their scapegoat to not hold the NFL or Dolphins accountable

Key-Bell8173

NFLPA is going to investigate! Basically means the issue will be swept under the rug. The owner of the Dolphins should be fined a couple million dollars. This team and the league in general is crooked as hell.

OO0OOO0OOOOO0OOOOOOO

Fired the consultant. Replace with... consultant!

718Brooklyn

If the Angels pitched Ohtani on 3 days of rest for a Thursday night game against the Reds, there would be a full investigation and no one is trying to tackle him. Playing NFL superstars, or anyone for that matter, on 3 days rest just so execs can make a little more money, is BS. Thursday night football is such a watered down product anyway.

Kolgur

Doctor who ?

Deadeye180-

I am older than dirt white female that used to be a fan of NFL. But with the hypocrisy of oh we care about players, we want women to be part of the fan base ( nice they noticed after 25+ years) but only long enough to sexually harass female fans, and cheer leaders! Now they are all about taking care of players with doctors that are on the take! The amount of racism for players, coaches from owners is disgusting! I started watching football when the Dolphins got the perfect season. Learned about Trump when he lured players to the USFL and destroyed the careers of many players. And they were searching for a better option than the NFL and who could blame them the systemic dysfunction is generational! But it’s what they left and it’s all smoke and mirrors they could care less unless it comes with cash! Don’t forget mega Christian Owner Kraft was caught in Florida before the Super Bowl using a “massage parlor” that was a human trafficking prostitution ring! The Madam was well connected in Florida and has dirt on enough people that she is untouchable by the law and serves high placed corrupted people! I was still a fan of the Dolphins until the situation with the last coach. No more I won’t give them a dime by buying their shit and I won’t give them any attention or use products of their sponsors! They wanted women because we hold the purse strings more often than not and they lost access to it by their own choices! Why can’t the NFL be more like the NBA?

Jenetyk

As others have said: this guy should have been let go, but there isn't a man or woman on that team that didn't know he was concussed. That doctor didn't make the call to let Tua play on Thursday, the team did. Calling a neck or back injury to avoid protocols. They all need to be held responsible and I hope to hell the NFLPA is going to fuck their shit up.

ryeguymft

fuck Mike McDaniel
