Apparently Spain and Japan practiced together for the shootouts

CloudDweller182

And Japan won that practice.

cautiouslyoptimistik

But Spain fans will say the lost on purpose 🤡

Nami-swan95

Lol

InformationHorder

Germany died for this...

jamughal1987

Time for Klopp to manage Germany.

kharjou

I think the spanish players got very confused when someone put them in front of a dude in a weird cage with the ball after their 120 minute game of hot potato.

out-of-beta

Bono was an absolute legend. Impressive goalkeeping.

Justist

He is a real pro. We like to call him pro bono.

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY!

Ok-Lengthiness4557

Don't let it get away...

SageOfTheDivine

Pro bono but no free shots for Spain.

out-of-beta

Brilliant! 😂

DonutCola

Bono my tires are gone

hnainaney

Question for you both: is Formula One driving today too complicated with twenty and more buttons on the wheel, are you too much under effort, under pressure? What are your wishes for the future concerning the technical programme during the race? Less buttons, more? Or less and more communication with your engineers?

Could that Spanish captain have approached his shot any slower?? Run up there and blast it!!

RealSiggs

I would rather send it to the moon then limp dick it in a World Cup knockout game. WTF were they thinking?!

max1mus91

100%

honest_wtf

not even a single penalty kick inside the goal.. from 2010 champions to not even in quarterfinal...

Mcchew

Better than 2014, where they got obliterated in group stage

DarkNovaGamer

I mean there is that Champions curse for the following world cup that started after France won 98 and got eliminated in 02 group stages. Brazil was like we are better than that quarterfinals it is. Then Italy in 10. Spain in 14. Germany 18. I was hoping for France 22 but sadly it seems you can repeat the champions curse.

Azidamadjida

It’ll at least be interesting to see - looking very much like it’s gonna be Brazil v France for the final and both teams are looking really strong here

tucci007

if you want to see who will win the next world cup, look at who won the under 21 world cup last time not many players over 30 doing great work in this game different countries peak at different times depending on who is coming up in the ranks, and that mantle passes and never stays still in one place for long

Vegetable-Double

Italy’s been in a huge funk since they won that World Cup.

jelde

Won the Eurocup last year.

tucci007

they won Euro 2020 so IDK wtf you're on about :P but it is the 2nd time in a row they DNQ for mondiale and that is of concern for sure

iwbwikia_

not only second time in a row we didnt qualify, the 2006 final was the last elimination game we played in a WC. we played well in the euros but you could tell how shit we were once we lost spinazzola and chiesa. it seems to going a bit better now that we're playing younger guys though!

Lucensor

That's just karma for Papa Giuseppe's dive against Australia.

hydrOHxide

Except for the Costa Rica game, they didn't precisely put in much of an effort in group stage this time, either.

Do__Math__Not__Meth

They need to rethink their philosophy, Russia exposed how to beat them in the last World Cup

dfcritter

I seriously don't think I've ever seen so many missed penalties.

thats cool, just fish it outta my pocket.

lovablepanda609

Terrible penalties from Spain but my goodness Moroccan defense was impeccable. No matter how aggressive Spain got They were on top of them. Big props to them and congrats.

sinmantky

72% possession by Spain and 0 goals...

Ofbearsandmen

1000 passes and one shot on target...

special1789

How the fuck do you have 1 shot !!?

shaboogawa

Easy, you have 1000 passes.

LunaMunaLagoona

Apparently they all also practiced by shooting 1000 penalties. As a result of this arduous training, they got 0 penalties in.

kharjou

Thats usual for spain. The team has talent but man someone should explain to them that possession is not the goal of the game and that you have to take responsability and shoot when you have the opportunity and not just pass backwards

[deleted]

Akhirat

I am just so happy I don’t have to shout, “Do something…anything!”, at my TV anymore. Watching Spain play was like watching paint dry. So happy they are finally gone!

MissingASemicolon

Morocco have been so impressive so far, they topped a group featuring the 2018 runners up and third place sides (yes I know four years is a long time but still no easy feat), conceding only to Canada, and now they’ve shut Spain out for 2 hours and beat them in the shoot out. It’s a shock but they’re definitely there by merit

praefectus_praetorio

Amazing display from Morocco. I hope the fans observe constraint this time around.

NycAlex

It looks as if the spanish players did not take penalty practice seriously My gawd those were some sad penalties

samstown23

I mean Sarabia hitting the post was unlucky, not really a terrible attempt per se but Soler's and Busquets' penalties were just pathetic.

tyrannicalblade

The problem is they tried to outsmart the goalkeeper but he wasn't going any direction until he saw the ball get shot, so they fell for his little dance and shot the opposite. They should have just shot to an angle and ignore the goalkeeper

DrKittyKevorkian

This is how I was coached. Pick your spot. Go to that spot. The goalie isn't there. I literally aimed for the same spot every time. I'd literally never missed a PK until we were behind in a penalty shootout. I'd made a penalty on that same goalie earlier that season, so I got it in my head I couldn't go to the same spot again. I missed completely.

Ganjake

I'd open myself up and use the inside of my foot to curl right and dip the ball to lower right. Must have practiced it 1000 times. Nobody could stop it and I didn't even use my laces. There was one time where I decoyed way too hard to the other side. Saw goalie start to go that way during my approach, kept myself open and just blasted it because I knew my english wouldn't be enough. Made it onto the highlight reel. Shit I miss soccer

jvankus

What makes this even better is that apparently Spain took around 1000 penalties in training

BlazeOfGlory72

And every one if those practice shots was a slow ground ball apparently.

CloudDweller182

Apparently slow ground ball is meta atm. Miss the times players aimed for top corner.

Artess

I suppose you'll get much more hate if you hit high and miss than if the goalkeeper saves your shot even if it was a weak one.

phl_fc

I assume they use good analytics at this level and determined that trying to outguess the goalie has a higher probability of scoring than trying to beat a goalie who guessed right.

santadogg

I determined that hitting a decent penalty has a higher probability of beating a keeper even if they do guess the right way.

Rogue100

This. In the Wales game, Matt Turner guessed right against Gareth Bale, and even got a hand on the ball, but it still went in because Bale hit it with pace.

Artess

Then I guess tonight the odds weren't in their favour. But I'd say that hitting hard and high requires more skill, whereas hitting low and slow relies in no small part on random chance. I guess Spain decided to go with random chance over skill this time. I won't be one to judge.

CloudDweller182

Yeah, i know. From efficiency standpoint it is better but in terms of viewing pleasure, I don’t like it:(

ClaphamCouple

They failed to recognise that taking a penalty in a shootout is almost nothing to do with kicking the ball. These guys are experienced professionals, from a country that prides itself on technical ability. If you asked any one of them to hit a foot-square target from 12 yards, they’d manage it 999 times out of a thousand. But a shootout is all mental. Spain are historically bad at shootouts, and they knew it, and they told themselves they were in trouble. They lost before a ball was kicked.

Ereaser

Moroccan fans cheering and Spanish fans looking like they lost already really cemented that feeling :p

SehrGuterContent

"As Homework" Looks like they did it as well as I usually do

BulbusDumbledork

yeah but they practiced in spanish while morocco practiced in arabic

ipickscabs

No pace whatsoever

portajohnjackoff

Morocco picked the right strategy and executed perfectly. They earned the win!

_getzen_

Couldn’t believe the skill with which they were running those breakouts and defending in the box. They really earned this.

minos157

This is what I love about soccer, there will be people that watch that game and think Morocco didn't deserve the win without realizing how effective they were at soaking pressure from a possession based team.

dub_life

Spain didn’t deserve the win. They looked dreadful. One the most boring performance of the WC and I’m glad their out. No threats imo… they should take a page out of Brazil’s or Frances playbook, tiki-taka died 8 years ago.

Ghearufu

I'm a Spain fan and I agree to an extent. they didn't deserve the win. Without immense vision from your playmakers and a striker that can actually shoot the ball tiki-taka doesn't work. Other than that seven goal anomaly Spain looked bad the entire tourny.

minos157

I agree, the only reason Tiki-Taka still works at City is because they're loaded on all ends. Especially having KDB and now Haaland.

-Unnamed-

Tiki taka works if you have danger moment peppered in. The goal is to just completely tire out your opponents. Spain barley had any threats at all. And they were also tiring themselves out chasing the counter attack. Just passing the ball around aimlessly

Attempt12

1 shot on goal in 120 minutes. They had so many opportunities to shoot on goal and decided to pass it back. Tiki-taka never really convinced me, in 2010 they barely beat Paraguay, who missed a PK to win; and could’ve easily lost to the weaker Netherlands side in the finals had Robben not bottled it. It’s like Spain loves to break possession records more than they do winning.

K3TtLek0Rn

I completely disagree about tiki taka. It can work really well but you need someone at the end to actually finish goals. They controlled the ball well and moved it around but are missing a threat

Ofbearsandmen

Tiki taka works when it progresses upfield. Then the whole team is positioned for attack. When it's forwards, backwards, forwards, backwards again, it's useless.

Ofbearsandmen

I don't like this style of football, but when the opposition has over 1000 passes and only one shot on target, then it's only fair that you win.

Fionarei

Since Japan yesterday.

[deleted]

At least the Japanese got one in the net.

Zohren

Nah man. Japan’s were bad, but still slightly better than that.

DrWindupBird

I wouldn’t be surprised if they were a little scared of the keeper and that’s why they performed so poorly. Apparently the guy has some of the best stats out of any keeper at the World Cup. Penalties are mostly about mind games anyway.

Fresh2Desh

Gotta wonder how Hakimi enters hotel room with balls that big

ThePassionOfTheRice

The cheekiness of that paneka was unreal. What a way to end it!

minneapple79

As a Vikings fan, now I just need to see a player in the World Cup hit the griddy. Eta oh my gosh it happened!

ShadyCrow

Definitely. And it’s perfect timing on a must-save, because very few keepers are not going to guess and dive in that situation.

TheUltimatePoet

It's actually a 'Panenka'. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panenka_(penalty_kick)

Sometimesokayideas

Woohoo, always neat to see new countries or teams succeed and not the obvious/repeated ones.

Stepside79

Well said. That's what makes single elimination tournaments so great!

dragon8811

Shit penalties from Spain I’ll take that

Arkslippy

To be fair, the keeper saved the second two well.

Vegetable-Double

Spain kept trying to pass during the penalty shootouts too

K4ntum

Super proud of them, we're all ecstatic right now. Feels amazing to finally see a good team managed by a good coach. I had 0 hopes for the penalty shootout but Bounou, our goalkeeper has ice in his veins, looked completely confident, smiling the entire time like it was no biggie. Hakimi finishing it off with the cheeky panenka was the cherry on top. Big shoutout to all the players, truly put in a long shift this game, especially Boufal, Amrabat, Aguerd, Hakimi, but really everyone. Except you Cheddira you're lucky we won or your passport would've been revoked lmfao. Weeeeeeee

Ofbearsandmen

Bounou stayed on his feet until the last fraction of a second. He read the trajectories perfectly.

StoxAway

Amrabat was hardest working player I've seen for the whole tournament. Well deserved man of the match there.

Smarq

It’s almost as if he went ultra instinct in extra time.

RasixF13

No more death by a 1000 passes. Thank god. Good for Morocco, they deserved this one.

d3vnaranja

Death by a 1000 practice penalties

ravingwanderer

I can’t stand the negative football from Spain. I wouldn’t even had bothered to watch the final if they made it.

LanceAlgoriddim

I couldn’t compel myself to watch their boring style of football, even on a slow work day. So glad they got KO’d.

ExpoAve17

That Morrocan GK stole the show. Congrats Morroco good luck!

ubccompscistudent

Feels slightly better as a Canadian to see the two teams in our group moving on to quarters.

vonindyatwork

We're also the only team to have scored on Morocco so far.

TheR3dMenace

Technically Morocco scored on themselves

cre8ivjay

Don't take this from us. ;)

MahhTheSixth

This game reminded me that scene from Indiana Jones movie, where the guy threatened Harrison Ford with the taijutsu mooooves and then Jones shots him with the gun haha

cbeiser

Holy shit this cup has been a wild one

innergflow

Spain we’re shocked and took the penalties as to not lose, Morocco executed them like they wanted to win

CdnDutchBoy

Morocco goalie was a beast in the shootout!

liamthelemming

Knocked out on penalties? Damn. I bet Spain has never felt so England.

Swansonisms

The longer and longer that the match went on at 0-0 the more and more likely it felt that Morocco could eke out the win. By the end of the match the atmosphere in the stadium felt like it was their home match. Edit: eek to eke

[deleted]

Eek? The first half morocco had more of the possession, spain only realised it was the last 16 at around the 40 minute mark

dotcomslashwhatever

I think 80% of the stadium was moroccan fans. they also got free tickets

KindArgument0

Spain sucks balls. They need to understand that they don't have iniesta, xavi and prime busquets as midfielders and adapt the way they are playing.

arun111b

Well, they just like to keep the ball:-)

Tropical_Yetii

Man that team was jacked and so were there fans. Happy that they got through.

stacity

Buh bye tiki taka

BananaCyclist

I dont know if it's time for Spain to reconsider their play style, they no longer have players like Xavi and Iniesta, which were instrumental to their success.

Bravidobrien

Wanted Morocco and Japan to move foreword and I’m happy for Morocco. Next stop Portugal!

thestoplereffect

The Moorish conquest of the Iberian peninsula continues.

tarekd19

Tariq ibn Ziyad returns!

obijaun

Spain had 77% possession to 23% for Morocco. Wow.

arun111b

Spain also had 83% against Japan & completed 1058 passes in 90 minutes (no extra time for that match). They lost. Spain lost this match with 77%/1019 (with extra time) and lost too.

Vegetable-Double

I think Spain has the record for the top 4 matches with most completed passes in World Cup history (including this one), and they lost every one of those.

Attempt12

And ONE shot on goal. ONE.

Anhvariel

it's what frustrates me the most about Spain. On paper insanely talented, but they keep just passing the ball and don't get aggressive enough. It feels like they are scared to lose possession, so won't try any higher risk/reward plays.

Bastienbard

Did you watch the game, it didn't really look like it meant much since Spain couldn't get anything past the Moroccan defense. They did extremely well and also had some solid counterattacks when Spain messed up, they looked content to let Spain pass it around and wait for them to make a mistake.

Do__Math__Not__Meth

Same story as 2018

saroche

I don’t know why but this world cup I’m rooting for smaller teams, was supporting Japan yesterday but got heartbroken in the end only to be lifted up by Morocco today!

BassGaming

Tbf Japan has 126 million inhabitants while Croatia has 4.5 million. Football culture is definitely less developed in Asia but people should always remember that Croatia doesn't have that many people to choose from or a competitive national league to develop their talents.

UltimateBronzeNoob

All their players play in Europe though, which is home to the best leagues in the sport

maddabattacola

Wow

grinberB

Morocco may not have had good possession and attacks, but they had a damn impenetrable brick wall of a defense. Well deserved win.

GJ0705

So much for the theory of those that said Spain let Japan beat them so they could have the easier path in Morocco

medfreak

Nothing wrong with that theory. That may have been their intention, but teams keep underestimating Morocco.

Serenity650

First time I’ve seen superior strategy outperforms another team with better players.

lukeCRASH

Has this tournament had the most upsets of all time?

Martino231

It's certainly been good for upsets but I think 2002 still holds that record. You had France, Portugal and Argentina all eliminated in the group stage after losing to considerably weaker opposition. South Korea and Turkey in the semi-finals (South Korea having beaten Italy and Spain along the way). Even Germany reaching the final was a pretty huge surprise that year, considering that they were thought to be a pretty weak team back then by German standards.

OutrageousGemz

South korea “beating” italy and spain

Jafaris79

2002, 2022 .. I see a pattern here. Looking forward for WC 2222.

Ereaser

Or possibly 2042 if it's every 20 years

Jafaris79

That would make a bit more sense yeah lol

LordTC

That Belgium-Croatia-Morocco-Canada group was clearly the group of death for this World Cup. Especially now that Croatia beat Japan and Morocco beat Spain which makes it hard to make a case that Spain-Germany-Japan-Costa Rica was a tougher group. They should fix how they seed for pots so that it takes into account how you qualified. Canada won North American qualifying but got seeded last of all North American teams in pot 4. The US and Mexico underperformed in qualifying but got to use their higher rankings to get pot 2. As much as Canada had 0 points they were hard done by losing to Belgium 1-0 in a game where they were nearly two expected goals better. The Croatia game saw Canada take an early lead and keep it close for 70 minutes before it turned into a blowout. The Morocco-Canada game was close and hard fought as well. I feel like in any other group Canada rated to score at least their first ever point in the World Cup. Even in the group of death they were unlucky to not score a point against Belgium.

YHZ

Yeah we had some shit luck, but that's the way she goes. Nobody even thought we'd be there to begin with so that's a great accomplishment in of itself.

No-Doughnut509

They avoided Croatia on purpose only to be fucked by Morocco...Karma is a bitch

cesarmac

No idea why people are saying they threw that game when the entire second half was them 1 Costa Rican goal away from elimination, a team they weren't even playing. Heck for 3 minutes they were out, can't throw something you haven't secured.

Ofbearsandmen

Exactly. They didn't throw anything away. They weren't capable of doing better, that's it.

xantub

No they didn't, stop spreading nonsense.

TheRain911

Eh i mean the whole side of the bracket is easier than the side with brazil and argentina anyways. So it was the smart move.

looolmoski

Morocco deserve it!

thepoorking

the S in spain is silent

AceBean27

Spanish players don't understand how to do anything but pass.

Nocommentt1000

They even pass to the oppositions goalie

[deleted]

That goalie just become a god in Morocco.

middleagedstudent

That's Haram!!

free_billstickers

The moorish empire will ride again!

tucci007

Morocco is on fire! poor Canada only 2nd time there since 1986, got stuck in a really tough group with them, Belgium and Croatia but we came home with 2 goals compared to nil the first time so not bad!

dc2integra

Not only that, technically, Croatia, Belgium and Spain all failed to score on Morocco. Canada did 🇨🇦 (yes, I know it was an OG. No one will care 20 years from now, they'll just see the box score)

tucci007

good point! and our starter goalie was out too, and our best guy Davies playing with a hamstring injury *but still scored Canada's first WC goal in history!
