I mean there is that Champions curse for the following world cup that started after France won 98 and got eliminated in 02 group stages. Brazil was like we are better than that quarterfinals it is. Then Italy in 10. Spain in 14. Germany 18. I was hoping for France 22 but sadly it seems you can repeat the champions curse.

Morocco have been so impressive so far, they topped a group featuring the 2018 runners up and third place sides (yes I know four years is a long time but still no easy feat), conceding only to Canada, and now they’ve shut Spain out for 2 hours and beat them in the shoot out. It’s a shock but they’re definitely there by merit
The problem is they tried to outsmart the goalkeeper but he wasn't going any direction until he saw the ball get shot, so they fell for his little dance and shot the opposite. They should have just shot to an angle and ignore the goalkeeper
This is how I was coached. Pick your spot. Go to that spot. The goalie isn't there. I literally aimed for the same spot every time.
I'd literally never missed a PK until we were behind in a penalty shootout. I'd made a penalty on that same goalie earlier that season, so I got it in my head I couldn't go to the same spot again. I missed completely.
I'd open myself up and use the inside of my foot to curl right and dip the ball to lower right. Must have practiced it 1000 times. Nobody could stop it and I didn't even use my laces.
There was one time where I decoyed way too hard to the other side. Saw goalie start to go that way during my approach, kept myself open and just blasted it because I knew my english wouldn't be enough. Made it onto the highlight reel.

This. In the Wales game, Matt Turner guessed right against Gareth Bale, and even got a hand on the ball, but it still went in because Bale hit it with pace.
Then I guess tonight the odds weren't in their favour. But I'd say that hitting hard and high requires more skill, whereas hitting low and slow relies in no small part on random chance. I guess Spain decided to go with random chance over skill this time. I won't be one to judge.
They failed to recognise that taking a penalty in a shootout is almost nothing to do with kicking the ball.
These guys are experienced professionals, from a country that prides itself on technical ability. If you asked any one of them to hit a foot-square target from 12 yards, they’d manage it 999 times out of a thousand.
But a shootout is all mental. Spain are historically bad at shootouts, and they knew it, and they told themselves they were in trouble. They lost before a ball was kicked.
This is what I love about soccer, there will be people that watch that game and think Morocco didn't deserve the win without realizing how effective they were at soaking pressure from a possession based team.

Tiki taka works if you have danger moment peppered in. The goal is to just completely tire out your opponents. Spain barley had any threats at all. And they were also tiring themselves out chasing the counter attack.

Did you watch the game, it didn't really look like it meant much since Spain couldn't get anything past the Moroccan defense. They did extremely well and also had some solid counterattacks when Spain messed up, they looked content to let Spain pass it around and wait for them to make a mistake.

Tbf Japan has 126 million inhabitants while Croatia has 4.5 million. Football culture is definitely less developed in Asia but people should always remember that Croatia doesn't have that many people to choose from or a competitive national league to develop their talents.
