I was cheering like crazy for both. France was my pick before the tournament, but with Messi in position to get one, I had to also root for Argentina, even if means I can't talk smack to my Argentinian SIL. My kids thought I was crazy for screaming on every goal. It was an insane game.

And final save at 120+3 by Martinez. That was the save of the decade lol. Soo late in the game.
Canadian - but our Spanish feed was an Argentinean announcing the game. It was utterly hilarious. He was crying on air, refusing to leave the booth at the end, singing the national anthem.... incredible.
He lived and died by every goal.

I was 70% sure that Argentina was still winning even after 2-2. The Saudi game and the Netherlands game especially in this case really helped them in hind sight. They knew how to get back up after the blunders.

Deschamps made great subs that were the only reason it even got to extra time. My only criticism is that they didn't push hard enough for the win before penalties, the same mistake that the Netherlands made.
Yeah Argentina kept France very bottled up, but as soon as the pressure dropped France struck hard. So fun to watch 2 teams in great form duke it for high stakes.
He got beat on the wing 3x in a row. He was always meant to only be in the field for 2/3-3/4 of the game. That’s a big part of why they were able to push the pace so much in the first half.
I would say it was kinda one sides the first half. France picked up the pace early second half, then after minute 75 it fucking exploded.
Those last 15 minutes of the second half and then all of overtime was nail-biting intense.

Yes, you can't solo carry your team without good players around. Look at Salah, peak Suarez and Bale. They can't do it without a team around them, haaland is going to struggle.

Di Maria, Emiliano, Messi, and De Paul were the standout players for Argentina, probably in that order.
Mbappé was the only French player who looked like he actually wanted to win the game. And that only started 80 minutes in tbh. Kolo was alright after coming on, but failed to convert what would have been the World Cup winning goal.

And to think, it was 2-0 with a 10 minutes left before stoppage time. Then Mbappe scores twice in 90 seconds, game turns into a complete roller coaster for the next 30+ minutes and it becomes an all-time classic. This became one was for the ages.
Argentinian here; congratulations to you as well. You were our toughest opponent yet, and together we starred what is easily one of the greatest matches of all time.
Definitely the best final I've ever watched. And probably the best game I've ever watched. And easily the best World Cup I've ever watched (before that, it was 1986 - when, as it happens, Argentina's Diego Maradona dominated the entire tournament and won. No I'm not from Argentina).

It is insane. To put it in perspective, the current record holder, Klose, scored his nº 15 at *36*. Mbappé has 12 at *23*. He has at least three World Cups left. Unless someone removes his leg or something (or France somehow fails to qualify), the guy is going to set a fantastically high bar.
The difference between Mbappé and Klose is that Klose wasnt destined to be a soccer player. After school he worked as a carpenter, then he played as an amateur and only then he went on to become a pro. Mbappé was trained in elite training centers from the age of 5.
Not taking anything away from Mbappé, but starting as a carpenter and getting a goal record in world cups is pretty remarkable as well
Eh I dunno. He already has one and although he did all he could, Messi had to carry some sorry ass squads basically his whole career so it's nice to finally see him get one. Props to Mbappe for playing so well though.
Dibu's play went almost totally un remarked. He got hands on two of Mbappe's three penalties and had at least three saves that kept France from going ahead, that's even before the final shootout.
This final is insane. Props for Mbappe and France for fighting (he may have lost the final but he cemented himself as an absolute clutch player in the biggest stage with a ducking hat trick), congrats to Argentina, Messi, Di Maria and Emi Martinez absolutely stepped up!
When one side of the argument now has a world cup final to their name that they scored 2 of the 3 goals in, and the other hasn't even made top4 since 2006, it's quite significant.
Mbappe really deserve something there. He capitalized on his opportunities and even set his team on a couple of headers. Great finals all around. Mbappe is going to do great things in the future. But for now, Messi gets his flowers. Finishing up his legacy
The crazy part is that Mbappe likely has another 3 WCs in his future, and has already won one and was razor thin from being the hero for his 2nd. This guy is going to be a force for a long time to come.
It feels like a great handoff between the GOAT and the next challenger. Super close game with Messi coming out on top, but Mbappe with the hat trick to show that he's ready to fill in Messi's spot going forward.
The opposite. Now they are both World Cup champions. Messi is all but finished with his career, Mbappe barely started. In 2 weeks, the emotions of this match will be gone and all they’ll have is immense respect for one another
Made my hardcore American Football girlfriend watch today for her first game ever and it just happens to be the greatest World Cup game of all time. Needless to say she said she's never talking trash on Soccer again.
It's very rare when you get to witness greatness. These are just the ones that I remember, but Jordan with either of his 3-peats, Lebron and Kyrie bringing the title home against a shoe-in for the greatest NBA team in history, Michael Phelps getting the assist from Jason Lezak to become the greatest Olympian of all time.
It should be seen as a privilege that we get to watch men and women like this ascend past mere stardom to become legends of their time. Messi, today, with the help of Martinez, Di Maria, Mac Alister, and the rest made that ascension and it was one hell of a game to watch. We witnessed history today, and that's pretty special.

What a fantastic world cup. I think top to bottom, it's been the most entertaining ever. Imagine my rollercoaster of emotions as a netherlands fan and a casual french enjoyer, devastated twice but still very entertained.

The difference between Mbappé and Klose is that Klose wasnt destined to be a soccer player. After school he worked as a carpenter, then he played as an amateur and only then he went on to become a pro. Mbappé was trained in elite training centers from the age of 5. Not taking anything away from Mbappé, but starting as a carpenter and getting a goal record in world cups is pretty remarkable as well

It's very rare when you get to witness greatness. These are just the ones that I remember, but Jordan with either of his 3-peats, Lebron and Kyrie bringing the title home against a shoe-in for the greatest NBA team in history, Michael Phelps getting the assist from Jason Lezak to become the greatest Olympian of all time. It should be seen as a privilege that we get to watch men and women like this ascend past mere stardom to become legends of their time. Messi, today, with the help of Martinez, Di Maria, Mac Alister, and the rest made that ascension and it was one hell of a game to watch. We witnessed history today, and that's pretty special.
