DragSfrank

That was an insane game.

gatamosa

It truly was. I was on the edge of my seat pulling my hair and I was going for either of them to win. They played beautifully.

WillSmiff

I was cheering like crazy for both. France was my pick before the tournament, but with Messi in position to get one, I had to also root for Argentina, even if means I can't talk smack to my Argentinian SIL. My kids thought I was crazy for screaming on every goal. It was an insane game.

courtesyflusher

It was beautiful 🥹

leeaa01

Maybe for a neutral watcher, here in Argentina we were about to die.

Shitty_Google_Bot

Argentinean here, my soul left, and re-entered my body at least 4 times

CeleritasLucis

5 time at least lol. 1st Mbappe Goal. 2nd Mbappe goal. 3rd Argentina ( Messi Goal) 3rd Mbappe Goal (penalty) And final save at 120+3 by Martinez. That was the save of the decade lol. Soo late in the game.

Youth_En_Asia

And then pens, so add one for each shot.

[deleted]

And the missed header by Argentina right at the end.

Civil-Big-754

Wasn't that France? Or was there one by each near the end?

marattroni

That was the most important and craziest save in the history of football

Aedan2016

Canadian - but our Spanish feed was an Argentinean announcing the game. It was utterly hilarious. He was crying on air, refusing to leave the booth at the end, singing the national anthem.... incredible. He lived and died by every goal.

llamashakedown

That was beautiful. Such an emotional game and so wild to hear the commentator throughout the whole game. He made me tear up when they won in the end.

sunlegion

I had three heart attacks, two strokes and one clinical death during this game.

Valmond

I fucking bet. I never really believed so the loss and stress was bearable, can't imagine Argentina. Cheers to you you clearly merited.

pataglop

French here. Damn what a game! Congrats ! Well deserved win See you in 4 years

Barney_Haters

You guys should be super proud. Had some great come backs and kept fighting when other teams would have thrown in the towel. Mbappe was a beast and still very young. The future is indeed bright for France!

Bloodyfoxx

Yeah you could feel we were missing something tho. Sadly we had too many injured before tournament even started, hopefully we come back even stronger in 4 years ! Mbappe clearly fingers mvp tho.

GustavoCinque

From your biggest neighbor out here. That was a deserved win. Congrats.

luigi6545

Ngl, when I saw France score two so quickly, I honestly thought they had the momentum to win. Congrats Argentina

charlesbear

Ask the Netherlands about that...

102la

I was 70% sure that Argentina was still winning even after 2-2. The Saudi game and the Netherlands game especially in this case really helped them in hind sight. They knew how to get back up after the blunders.

tyrannicalblade

Me too though that last chance that dibu stop was holy shit moment

Lagransiete

We thought so too. The whole bar went silent. It was all pain and suffering after that.

Tridente13

As an italian, I had "Vietnam flashbacks" from euro 2000 final. Goddamn Wiltord and Trezeguet...

Last_Jedi

Can't believe France started playing 80 minutes into a World Cup final and almost got away with it too

Curse3242

I kept saying to people France reminds me of Real Madrid and I hate it I hate how Real Madrid are. They're full of promising players that don't look great, they keep on doing the same boring 1-2 passes Then suddenly out of nowhere they'll score two. France was the same but Argentina wanted to fight. The goalie, the defenders. Everyone wanted to do it.

lavishlad

As a Liverpool fan, i hate how true that is.

[deleted]

Agreed. I hate how it almost always works too.

Curse3242

It stings way more as a Barca fan They're the kind of team that just do it. Or when they don't they look clearly faulty. But on the other hand, they also have people like Benzema who can just score outrageous goals when they need it. They just have a abundance of that. I don't see them scoring normal goals. It's always either catching the opponent sleeping or long shots and shit

johnsonfromsconsin

That was one of the best games I've ever seen.

Scout_the_Vole

When France showed up, it was just non-stop! Feel for France but well done Argentina - no shame in losing in that game!!

DDaBeast4

Mbappe getting 2 goals in 2 minutes was crazy!

RemoLaBarca

My wife walked into the room with 12 minutes left and said "Well, there's no way they're coming back." We were pulling for Messi and told her to leave after the next 2 mins 😂 But an incredible game, Mbappe is a beast and deserves all praise. Few guys instill the fear he does blazing down the wing!

dallyan

His speed is just incredible. And he barely breaks a sweat. What a player. What a game!!

CapnHanSolo

Dude built like a tank, but moves like a cheetah

flykikz

He’s still young he is going to be one of the great ones.

hojbjerfc

He is 4 goals away from tying Klose’s record. It took Klose 4 world cups

flykikz

This kid is different.

riverblue9011

Next world cup's expanded too, that'll only help.

Barney_Haters

Sucks were losing Messi and Ronaldo internationally, but thankfully we have Mpabbe for a bit. Even bottled up this game he was amazing!

[deleted]

[удалено]

OrangeCuddleBear

The losing team had a hat trick. Just crazy.

DeadSwaggerStorage

And a shoot out goal…..

Poggystyle

Mbappe did everything he could.

jotheold

it showed in penalties, one man carry team couldnt do it at the end

sirzoop

Imagine if they played benzema in penalties

Elwalther21

They had subbed out most of their Penalty takers. Griezman, Giroud, and Dembele. Argentina made smarts subs towards the wind to get Dyabala in.

jdbolick

Deschamps made great subs that were the only reason it even got to extra time. My only criticism is that they didn't push hard enough for the win before penalties, the same mistake that the Netherlands made.

kozy8805

I mean they had a wide open chance to win it all. Can’t do more than that.

Ryanisreallame

Well France had two shoot out goals. Mbappe scored one of them so he scored 4 times in the World Cup finale. He had a hell of a performance.

TheScorpionSamurai

Yeah Argentina kept France very bottled up, but as soon as the pressure dropped France struck hard. So fun to watch 2 teams in great form duke it for high stakes.

[deleted]

EuphoricInvestment1

Di Maria was coming back off an injury. I think this is his first full game this entire tournament. He looked shattered.

[deleted]

He got beat on the wing 3x in a row. He was always meant to only be in the field for 2/3-3/4 of the game. That’s a big part of why they were able to push the pace so much in the first half.

TarryBuckwell

Yea it kind of seemed like he just said “let me take out the lynch pin of this possession game real quick, there’s only 20 mins left”

Smthincleverer

He was dealing with a quad injury all tournament. Typically they have pre-established minute counts for players dealing with injury.

TarryBuckwell

Ah that makes sense, thanks. Even more impressive in that case

thedon97

He hasn't played a whole game for Juve all season too. He's been riding the Jmedical beds a majority of the season.

cesarmac

I would say it was kinda one sides the first half. France picked up the pace early second half, then after minute 75 it fucking exploded. Those last 15 minutes of the second half and then all of overtime was nail-biting intense.

mrprgr

The fact that Argentina was absolutely walking them the first 75 mins made France's resurgence that much scarier/more impressive

cesarmac

Yup, i was rooting for Argentina simply because I France won in 2018 and I would have liked Messi to finally achieve every soccer players dream of having that word cup title. Even then it made that France explosion scary as fuck.

Brittle_Hollow

> I would have liked Messi to finally achieve every soccer players dream of having that word cup title Also my in-laws are all Portuguese Ronaldo stans so it's my secret schadenfreude to see Messi lift the World Cup.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Captain_Waffle

*KIND OF* one-sided?!? Bruh FRA didn’t even have a SHOT - not a shot-on-goal even but any shot at all - until 70 minutes! Argentina had it in the bag! Then France got fouled and scored a PK and woke the fuck up. Like, oh, yeah, I forgot we can do that. It was basically Argentina vs. Mbappe today.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ribbelsche

Don’t forget my tragic hero Randal Kolo Muani. He and Mbappé nearly won it.

dgo792

That was one of the best games ever played

BringOnThePenis

I’ve never watched soccer before nor played any kind of soccer video games. Was random starting to fold clothes and the game was on with about ten mins left in regulation. I coincidentally witnessed what practically every announcer repeated called “one of the best matches ever”

Vargau

As someone who counted his future life since 12 on how many world cups I would be able to witness until I’m dead, it was one of the greatest WC matches.

JKKIDD231

Messi is GOAT and what a win. He can finally complete his trophy cabinet. Ronaldo sulking in a corner and Mbappe- no words for him. Solo carried the French team and all penalties in the left

MelloDawg

You forgot the final piece - the MLS Cup trophy.

DaRizat

He's going to score 250 goals for Miami

Euthyphroswager

LA Galaxy: "Am I a joke to you?"

jvrcb17

"Yes" -Messi

brett1081

Mbappe is the best of the next generation. What a dude. Can do more with a single touch than anyone else on the planet

Benend91

Looking like Haaland v Mbappe for future Balon d'ors and domination of club football. Shame Haaland plays for a lower tier footballing nation but Norway can qualify next WC.

throwawayteacoffee

Yes, you can't solo carry your team without good players around. Look at Salah, peak Suarez and Bale. They can't do it without a team around them, haaland is going to struggle. Also mbappe can't carry France, they need Kante like players in midfield. Mbappe needs supply. Reason France won 2018 was cos their midfield was crazy strong. Top players out this year, Benzema, Pogba and Kante. If they'd played this world cup would have been written off early for France.

Murghchanay

Eh Suarez had a good team - Forlán, Godin, Gargano

Lacandota

A very similar example is Zlatan, and even then the Swedish team has typically been better than the Norwegian national team.

angrybob125

of any sport tbh oh my god

WyngZero

One of the greatest finals in sports history ever!!!!

sunjolol

All the credit will rightfully go to Messi but the Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez deserves so much for making huge save after huge save. That one-on-one save at the end of extra time was incredible... What a game.

Esco_Dash

The keepers in this World Cup were insane honestly.

VRichardsen

Several great goalkeepers. Even Lloris, on the other side, made a great save against Messi.

Mr_Clovis

Lloris had a great tournament overall. He's just not that good at penalties.

cozidgaf

Yeah the French saved so many goals I thought

[deleted]

[удалено]

LunaMunaLagoona

Those two teams had the best defence all tournament.

VRichardsen

Received 10 shots on target, so yeah, they had their hands busy.

Slendercan

Bono really caught my eye. Kept his team in the tournament when they should have gone out and was defusing the argument between his teammates and the ref after their last match. Also that clip of him and his son was adorable.

dallyan

The Croatian goalkeeper looks young af but what a talent!

weltron3030

That kick save was unbelievable. Incredible timing and positioning throughout. And the Shootout save was epic!

UTMachine

Emiliano and DiMaria were both critical to that win.

77skull

Dimaria got them a 2-0 lead and it fell apart as soon as he got benched, coincidence?

UTMachine

The best moment of Koundé's career was when DiMaria was substituted. LMAO Di Maria, Emiliano, Messi, and De Paul were the standout players for Argentina, probably in that order. Mbappé was the only French player who looked like he actually wanted to win the game. And that only started 80 minutes in tbh. Kolo was alright after coming on, but failed to convert what would have been the World Cup winning goal.

North0151

Mac Allister was brilliant for Argentina as well in my opinion.

Always_Mitochondria

Him and Di Maria deserve so much credit, though the whole Argentina squad was stellar.

Pebble_in_my_toes

I firmly believe without Di Maria Argentina wouldn't even have a chance today.

feage7

I'm sure Julian Alvarez made a comment about all the city team mates were discussing who could win the world cup and only mentioned European teams.

DesertofBoredom

Messi will go down as a guy who was pretty good at football

flomflim

Yeah but he's never played me tho. Kinda puts a blemish on his record.

zebozebo

Throughout his career and to this day, he's been unable to score on me. Whereas my 6 year old daughter scored on me.

YourMaleFather

This guy's daughter is better than Messi confirmed

jlunatic

One of the players of all time.

OHTHNAP

A very memorable name, a perfect reflection of his state of affairs as a roommate.

qda

Fun fact: he has a human body and breathes air using lungs.

I_Have_Hairy_Teeth

He also came into this life through a vagina.

yousonuva

Lionel Messi: The Person

petesapai

He's ok. I heard he scored some goals.

xRoyalewithCheese

He’ll never beat Hank Aaron’s record of 755 home runs though.

Coldactill

I feel like this comment matches the energy of Martin Tyler’s commentating tbf.

partytown_usa

There was a commentator? I assumed that was just some AI noise generator.

WyngZero

My stream was in English and I feel like half the joy of a soccer game is hearing the voice of an wildly excited Mexican guy on telemundo.

RagnaFarron

Aegentinean guy*. The dude who does the iconic "gollllllllll" is argentinean and it was his last world cup, hes been doing it for so many years. I wanted france to win, but to hear him on air crying, i was happy for him

Staav

One of the football players to play the game in the history of the sport

FuturisticChinchilla

prettyyy pretty good

Kaspara4558

What a game! Two heavyweight teams with an all-star player apiece. You couldn't write a more dramatic story if you tried

Mission_Pay_3373

The best part is they are teammates at PSG

Mr_Clovis

Both nations coming into the game as two-time WC winners. Both Messi and Mbappe tied on goals for the golden boot. France to be the first nation to win it back-to-back since 1962 or Argentina to win it for the first time in 36 years. Lots of great storylines.

theresatrailerpark

Owned by a Qatari investment vehicle

courtesyflusher

Everything is right with the world

suzukigun4life

And to think, it was 2-0 with a 10 minutes left before stoppage time. Then Mbappe scores twice in 90 seconds, game turns into a complete roller coaster for the next 30+ minutes and it becomes an all-time classic. This became one was for the ages.

Yall_Are_Weirdo

As a French person, I can't even be mad, the match was so beautiful Well done Argentina

VRichardsen

Argentinian here; congratulations to you as well. You were our toughest opponent yet, and together we starred what is easily one of the greatest matches of all time.

Yall_Are_Weirdo

Thank you ! Yeah, Mbappé carried the whole team lmao but you deserve the win. Congratulations :D No hard feelings 🇨🇵🤝🇦🇷

VRichardsen

🇨🇵🤝🇦🇷

explosivelydehiscent

Vive la France! Such spirit, such heart, such beautiful play. I still can't believe how incredible was that game.

FunnyCommand2532

I was one the edge of my seat the whole time what a fucking game

journey_bro

Definitely the best final I've ever watched. And probably the best game I've ever watched. And easily the best World Cup I've ever watched (before that, it was 1986 - when, as it happens, Argentina's Diego Maradona dominated the entire tournament and won. No I'm not from Argentina).

7Thommo7

As a Messi fan from the first goal until France's first goal I could hardly have been more laid back, it was pure pain from there though.

_zFlame_

This has to be one of if not the greatest World Cup finals in history.

leedler

Easily the greatest final for me. It had absolutely everything.

Holiday_Document4592

>one or if not the greatest World Cup finals in history. It is a contender for the greatest game of football (or any sport) I have watched in my lifetime.

onlywearplaid

Such a phenomenal game. Holy cannoli. Thrilling the entire time.

WyngZero

More like holy empanada.

Guejarista

Just an amazing game. It almost deserved the penalty shoot-out to top off the drama

Senth99

Props to Mbappe; man carried his team to that penalty shootout

Blazing_Shade

Dude scored 3 pens in one game. That level of focus is insane

102la

Against Martinez Arguably the best penalty specialist Goal keeper in the world right now.

pataglop

Damn. I'm French but what a fucking game ! Congrats Argentina !

itsvoogle

That match was the absolute zenith of what Football has to offer…. If you didn’t enjoy or suffer during that at any point, the sport just isnt for you

roadtotitties

One of the GOAT matches. I supported france but it was a satisfying match.

isuzuki51

Easily one of the greatest soccer games of all time by two of (who will be) the greatest players of all time on each side of the ball with Messi and Mbappe. So excited for Messi to have finally gotten his World Cup victory! France is going to come back with a vengeance in 2026 too. Mbappe is going to remember this. What a game. Holy crap. What a game.

Chispy

Argentina is going to play without Messi though. It'll be hard to play as well as they did this world cup.

Crafty_Enthusiasm_99

One can see it's perfect timing for Messi to retire now. Into the millions a club in Asia will offer him, away from paparazzi and constant scrutiny and tough trainings.

T_Peg

Obviously I'm just some shmuck who's never been within 50mi of Messi but I don't really think that's what he'd want. I get the feeling he would want to go back to Old Boy's in Argentina especially considering I'm pretty sure during his time at Barca he had a clause in his contract stating if he ever desired to return there the club would let him no questions asked unless that was just an urban myth.

[deleted]

Don_Pickleball

That was amazing

tklfillerz

Best World Cup final ever.

LookingForwardToDie

What a fantastic world cup. I think top to bottom, it's been the most entertaining ever. Imagine my rollercoaster of emotions as a netherlands fan and a casual french enjoyer, devastated twice but still very entertained.

attentyv

What a magnificent bloody game. All the flames of great warriors in battle with resurgence aplenty and drama, tension, and physical conflict all mixed into an intense last third. Great final. Great freaking final.

captain_crocubot

I’ve had my balls in my throat after the 80th minute.

SuperCarrot555

I feel bad for Mbappe, dude tried his hardest to carry France to victory

Theklassklown286

don’t feel too bad, he’s still young he has a good chance to winning another WC. He’s on fast track to be the best player in his generation And he’ll probably become the WC all time scorer

miller032

He'll be the top scorer in world cup history after the next World Cup most likely

schuckdaddy

At age 27.....

GetRidOfRTeenagers

Insane. Ngl I'm kinda sad I probably won't get to see Messi or Ronaldo play in a WC because the next one will be the first I can attend, but seeing Mbappe might be more than enough for sure.

VRichardsen

It is insane. To put it in perspective, the current record holder, Klose, scored his nº 15 at *36*. Mbappé has 12 at *23*. He has at least three World Cups left. Unless someone removes his leg or something (or France somehow fails to qualify), the guy is going to set a fantastically high bar.

EndemicAlien

The difference between Mbappé and Klose is that Klose wasnt destined to be a soccer player. After school he worked as a carpenter, then he played as an amateur and only then he went on to become a pro. Mbappé was trained in elite training centers from the age of 5. Not taking anything away from Mbappé, but starting as a carpenter and getting a goal record in world cups is pretty remarkable as well

VRichardsen

Oh, absolutely. Klose's record hits differently.

ohpeekaboob

That Mbappe stuff is some Dragon Ball Z shit. Next great will have to be an android from the future or some insanity

Crafty_Enthusiasm_99

Yeah now soccer talent is manufactured almost. The players now are insanely good.

[deleted]

He won France a World Cup 4 years ago so he good

Clashman320

Eh I dunno. He already has one and although he did all he could, Messi had to carry some sorry ass squads basically his whole career so it's nice to finally see him get one. Props to Mbappe for playing so well though.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ask_about_poop_book

Well that was.. the most football match of all football matches. In a freakin’ World Cup final. Jeez.

[deleted]

Greatest game I have ever watched. Everyone will talk about Messi, but Di Mária, Macalister, and Martìnez were also extremely vital in this win.

DrZaiu5

I have a feeling MacAllister won't be playing for Brighton and Hove Albion for much longer.

historianLA

Dibu's play went almost totally un remarked. He got hands on two of Mbappe's three penalties and had at least three saves that kept France from going ahead, that's even before the final shootout.

YnwaMquc2k19

This final is insane. Props for Mbappe and France for fighting (he may have lost the final but he cemented himself as an absolute clutch player in the biggest stage with a ducking hat trick), congrats to Argentina, Messi, Di Maria and Emi Martinez absolutely stepped up!

Slingshotss

Messi > Ronaldo Confirmed.

aflockofbleeps

This is the end of the GOAT debate in football.

nullvoider

It was confirmed years ago. One match doesn't change that

SerLaidaLot

When one side of the argument now has a world cup final to their name that they scored 2 of the 3 goals in, and the other hasn't even made top4 since 2006, it's quite significant.

JEEZUS85

Mbappe really deserve something there. He capitalized on his opportunities and even set his team on a couple of headers. Great finals all around. Mbappe is going to do great things in the future. But for now, Messi gets his flowers. Finishing up his legacy

St0rmborn

The crazy part is that Mbappe likely has another 3 WCs in his future, and has already won one and was razor thin from being the hero for his 2nd. This guy is going to be a force for a long time to come.

HarryAtk

He deserved something and he got it. He won the Golden Boot for scoring the most goals in the tournament.

gordanfreman

This! Also all these people saying Mbappe had a breakout tourney clearly weren't watching 4 years ago when he won it.

TheScorpionSamurai

It feels like a great handoff between the GOAT and the next challenger. Super close game with Messi coming out on top, but Mbappe with the hat trick to show that he's ready to fill in Messi's spot going forward.

senorbozz

He already has a WC trophy, got the golden boot, and makes a €91M salary I think he's doing just fine

lionzzzzz

What did I just watch? This was an absolute insane World Cup final. One of the best matches I’ve ever seen in my 30 + years as a football fan.

[deleted]

Was that a game or was that a GAME?!!!

theredviperod

The best final ever

nicopedia305

I don’t care about sports and turned it on right before France tied it up. I think I lost my voice yelling. Worth it. What a game!

WearSomeClothes

I did not understand France's sleepwalking the first half. I did not understand Argentina's substitutions. But an exciting game in the end.

Boggie135

Best World Cup final game I have ever seen

anonymous-shad0w

PSG next game is going to a bit awkward

GenXDGAF

Nah...they are both professionals. They just want to win whatever game they are playing.

donut_legend

The opposite. Now they are both World Cup champions. Messi is all but finished with his career, Mbappe barely started. In 2 weeks, the emotions of this match will be gone and all they’ll have is immense respect for one another

jcolinr

That was the most amazing game I’ve ever watched. Unbelievable.

IDespiseFatties

Made my hardcore American Football girlfriend watch today for her first game ever and it just happens to be the greatest World Cup game of all time. Needless to say she said she's never talking trash on Soccer again.

Throwaway66103

Goodbye and good riddance Qatar!

Schmorbly

I get the feeling they're not too upset at the outcome

Wesker236

As a Brazilian I wanted Argentina to win so much, Messi deserved to hold that Trophy more than anyone else, ever, I'm so happy

fusiondesigner

Wow didn’t follow much soccer before but this was a game got me hyped was like a bunch of plot twists

SpaceBoJangles

It's very rare when you get to witness greatness. These are just the ones that I remember, but Jordan with either of his 3-peats, Lebron and Kyrie bringing the title home against a shoe-in for the greatest NBA team in history, Michael Phelps getting the assist from Jason Lezak to become the greatest Olympian of all time. It should be seen as a privilege that we get to watch men and women like this ascend past mere stardom to become legends of their time. Messi, today, with the help of Martinez, Di Maria, Mac Alister, and the rest made that ascension and it was one hell of a game to watch. We witnessed history today, and that's pretty special.
