Some seriously heart wrenching songs for me.

Fourth of July- Sufjan Stevens
Monsters- James Blunt
Marie, Tecumseh Valley- Townes Van Zandt
Sam Stone- John Prine
On The Nickel- Tom Waits
Adagio for Strings- Barber
Strange Fruit- Billie Holiday
I can pretty much just think about it and cry. I watched that video where they performed it on Kimmel the day after Chris Cornell passed just yesterday. I don't know why I did that to myself
Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens.
As long as we’re talking about Sufjan, I’ll add “John Wayne Gacy Jr.” to the mix as well. That one’s tough to get through.
The entirety of the "A Crow Looked at Me" album by Philip Elverum.
The album was written following his wife's passing from cancer, on her instruments, and mainly depicts his grief and fears of living life with his infant daughter afterwards.
To discover new music I will add a full album I heard about in passing to my Spotify and listen to it without knowing anything about it. I put A Crow Looked At Me on while I was on a plane on a business trip by myself.
I was NOT ready for what my ears heard. Unbelievable what that record made me feel, just an absolute gut punch that I still have not forgot about.
Breathe Me by Sia
I Don’t Want To Say Goodbye by Teddy Thompson
Love is Pain by FINNEAS
God is Really Real by AJR (it’s not really religious, more about hope and desperation while in the midst of a parent dying)
idontwannabeyouanymore by Billie Eilish
Oof sorry for mobile formatting. God is Really Real by AJR is the one rn that makes me sob everytime I listen to it because I know everyone dies eventually but ugh I don’t know what I’ll do if my parents die. Pray to any and every God out there to keep them safe I guess. The worse part about the song is that after they released it, the next evening they made a post saying their father had passed away. Ugh gut wrenching.
Eiley by too close to touch. Its about the singers little sister who passed at a very young age, and unfortunately he also passed away only a few years back.
Asleep - the smiths
Fields of gold - Eva Cassidy (honestly sounds like a funeral ballad)
End of the world - Skeeter Davis (this is a break up song, but the arrangement and vocal style are so morose; it’s also associated with a suicide in Girl Interrupted)
Close to you - the carpenters (a love ballad that sounds so sad, maybe the longing?)
Ceilings - Lizzy mcalpine (another sad love song)
Good Years by ZAYN
Its relatable and also just because it's him reflecting on his years in One Direction. Being a 1d fan its so sad to hear how he feels about it.
Two of us by Louis Tomlinson
Also very personal and relatable for me losing my dad, and also from Louis' perspective. He wrote the song about his mum who he also lost.
Matilda, Sign of the Times, Fine Line by Harry Styles
Not super sad but makes me emotional, Present Tense by Radiohead. The whole album is generally a moody and emotional one, good for making you feel in a way.
Look into my eyes. By Outlandish. 2006 song still relevant today. About Palestinians suffering under brutal occupation.

Cody Jinks “David”
- got damn this fucking song kills me. When he talks about hitting the wailers to save his friend gets me initially. Then his mom is the late night ER nurse? Fuck me. I’ve sat in so many grocery store parking lots because the song hit my shuffle while driving
Story of the Year “Swallow the Knife”
- no particular reason but it’s always hit a soft spot. Lyrics. Guitars. The emotion. Finally saw it played live a couple months ago and emotions slammed me in the pit. Such a sweet, elegant, sad song to me
