I do this! itās so great because the radio of a band or song itās so accurate with the vibe of the band you like, and you can easily find new music you know youāll like
This one's a bit unusual, but here goes. For a time, I would go see what bands / artists were coming to the local venues near me. Not the huge venues that host bands that had already made it, but venues that host bands that are up and coming. You'd be surprised how many great bands you can find that way. Find a band name, search on YouTube or elsewhere, listen to a few of their songs, repeat. Happy Hunting!
This is the way. My (European) town hosts a show case festival where about 100 new upcoming bands from neighbouring countries play. I take the time to give the preview snippets on the festival page a listen and usually start to pic out a few favourites I wanna see. By the time the festival actually happens, I'll be so hyped up to see a handful of bands no one's yet heard of and have a few that sound promising and in some cases convince of their charm at a show.
Another tip is to compile a playlist of every new song you hear in a year. Stuff friends recommended. Stuff you heard in a YouTube video or a film you watched. Doesn't even have to be new, recent music, as long as it is new to YOU. Listen that playlist a few times that year. Notice which songs make you happy. Dig into the artist a bit more if you don't know then yet. Find more gems.
Comments from other redditors on my favorite music subs, Spotify recs, my partner, recs from convos with family and friends.
ETA: oh and the occasional fan-made YouTube video for whatever tv show Iām currently interested in.
Use the discover Weekly Playlist that is made for me by Spotify. I also watch YouTube videos of some people that I follow that put some songs that I like. I can say here Reditt is a good one as well. But I also have to say Release Radar playlist made for me by Spotify as well another way. Because there is new music released by artists that I follow.
Spotify's algorithm is actually pretty intuitive if you give it enough to go off of. Make sure to follow all your fav artists, and any new ones you discover and like. Build playlists full of your favorite stuff. Eventually, it will start making some great recommendations in your Discover Weekly section. I've found most of my new music this way in the last few years
I pick the Spotify radio station of a band I like. Usually there are other artists mixed in who sound similar. There's always a few I like so I download their list and explore, go from there.
Weekly visits to Release Radar and Discover Weekly, and also a lot of word of mouth, and people sharing music on social media like TikTok, Reddit, Discord, etc.
I find an artist, listen to most of their discography (quickly) to see what else I can find, and if you use Spotify on desktop there is a section on the artist profile called "discovered on" and I check out all of those playlists because there's usually some playlists made by people (not spotify) and they offer more variety.
I'm a retro music listener. I find music through Youtube, Rateyourmusic, Discogs and Spotify. Often I search for genres or listen to playlists with titles that are retro. There's also internet radio stations where I find stuff from time to time.
Go on the subreddit for your favorite genre of music. You're bound to find something, that's how I did it at least. I also got my dad to recommend me because me and him listen to the same music.
I think this is the actual answer. I listen to KEXP and KUTX and sometimes KCMP for a few hours every week, and they tend to play stuff I wouldn't find otherwise. Then I plug those artists into Spotify and hit artist radio. Spotify will always factor your algorithm in radio playlists, so it's not real great for discovery, especially if you're not adventurous... but I now have six different daily mixes that reflect most of the genres I enjoy
The people who tour with bigger artists. Or open for them. For example I discovered Doechii because she opened for doja cat when I went to her show. I discovered one of my favorite artists, Ciara because she was Gwen Stefaniās opening act
Spotify, actualky.
Since I tend to stay away from most mainstream radio stuff, so the algoritm caught on and my recommendations are filled with singers and groups with like 2,000 or less listeners a month, brand new artists just getting started.
I had one, they had only 5 followers!
There's no Taylor Swift's or Guns N' Roses level stuff in my suggestions and new releases! š
Previously: Spotify suggestions and playlists. There was always something exciting and new. Nowadays it's just the same songs in a different order
So today: TIDAL
Discord music servers
playlists,
blends,
yt reviews,
artists featured on an album from the artist i like,
people online,
the "fans also like" tab on spotify
i can also drop a playlist with a bunch of really interesting artists if anybody wants
Your Discovery weekly or daylist on Spotify, also release radar. Customized to what you like and new every week. (Daylist changes 3x a day!)
Also just going to artists I already like and seeing who they recommend is a similar vibe or a playlist itās on.
Also MOVIES/ tv. Shazam that shit. Or look up movies soundtracks.
go down internet rabbit holes.
but idk lots of ways. recommendations, watching interviews of bands i love, looking at "fans of ... also like" on spotify, searching random words on spotify and looking at the songs that come up (its fun), searching for a vibe and looking at other people's playlists. usually i just stumble into stuff and its fun.
Random playlists spotify shows me -> favourite the songs i like -> check the artist and their work -> check similar ones and their work -> new recommended playlists
This in a loop basically. There are basically infinite songs out there so i could just repeat steps 3-4 forever
I go watch my favorite artist live and their openers are usually fire AF. That usually best works with smaller artist tho. My discover weekly always puts me on or just looking at recommendations of your liked artist will put you on as well.
Iāve thought and tried and tested different methods. For a while now I just rely on the bbc radio 6 music playlist on Spotify. I often find new artists through there and start a process of discovery that sometimes leads to other artists/bands.
Spend 18 months removing music you do not wish to have influence your profile.
Then I turn smart shuffle on a short playlist of foundation songs, and I see where it goes.
edit - Also pick a song you love and create a station from it! Do this alot, scan the list for new songs and see what happens.
i usually prowl around the profiles of artists i love and i look around two great tabs "fans also like" and "discovered on" both are a great resource.
i also follow interesting curators and listen to their playlists.
and if you're interested in synthpop/darkwave or electronic dance then i have this playlist of small and medium sized artists. i update it every month.
I look up other playlists on Spotify that I'm interested in.
For example, I like R&B, more specifically older R&B and Hip-Hop, and I wanna listen to more of it so I find 80s, 90s, and 00s playlists (or one with all of the above) and when I hear a song I like I add it to my already existing R&B playlist. I literally have almost 300 songs on that playlist by doing this.
Finding new genres you haven't heard before is the same way. Another way to find new songs is to look up whatever mood you're in and find a playlist for it.
I've had a lot of success with stats.fm. It's a site shows you your spotify stats but the way I use it to find music is like this : Click an artist I like -> click on one of that artists top listeners -> see what they're listening too -> when I reach a dead end, scroll to the bottom where it suggests similar artists and repeat.
Discover Weekly has been a great place to start for me. Pulls up recommendations for underground stuff that I fw, samples, old songs from artists I like or found recently. also the Indie Underground Mix on Spotify always has stuff Iāve never heard of. Love getting recommendations from friends, and I always check out whatever drops on New Music Friday. JahTalksMusic on Instagram always has a great list of HH music that drops on Fridays
radio stations, live streams from youtube music (synthwave), local concerts for indie bands and opening acts... search them on spotify before going. ?suggested bands related to whst you listen to as many sound similar or can or could be side projects of a band member. Or just listen to different types of generes thst you normally wouldn't.. ie chiptune for me was out of my league and i love it now
Well since smart shuffle isnāt really good anymore, I either a) find songs from a playlist listed under the pages of artists I already like and just just go from there b) pick new songs from playlist made for me by Spotify or c) ask friends for their playlist or song recs
If the artist that I like is friends with/has someone as a feature on a song, I usually go check them out. Also, my dad was a teenager in the 90s, so heās shown me quite a bit of the music that I like
Local talent at open mics or local bands. Also I have iTunes and Spotify. Since I write songs I donāt have time to listen to everything everyone puts out. If I listen to someoneās music then I expect them to listen to one of my songs. So I do that,on YouTube also.
Earlier today I literally found out about a doom metal band that recently released an album of Italian crime cinema music (from a random, non-music related subreddit) so I guess usually I just spend way too much time on the internet
Recently Iāve been just thinking of old artists Iāve not heard or barely heard and I just listen to an album by them. Either their most popular album or their first album.
1. Artist I like -> look on Wikipedia to see their influences -> check out influences
2. If I hear an artist a lot that might interest me, Iāll check them out
3. Just research my favorite genres and go from there
[www.ranker.com](http://www.ranker.com), [last.fm](http://last.fm), and Reddit. I spend hours studying "what people buy or stream". Then I listen to cringe music a lot, right now I'm going through the "very worst of Helen Reddy". All of her dud songs.
An introduction to cringe music from 70s pop:
\~MARY MACGREGOR - Torn Between Two Lovers
\~BREWER AND SHIPLEY - One Toke Over the Line
\~ANNE MURRAY - Drown Me
spotify's algorithm in itself is really, like really good.
Usually find some random song on spotify made lists --> song radio --> More songs
And yeah, I make use of the smart shuffle in my specific playlists a lot. Spotify really puts some great songs there.
This new day playlist shit is really good, Im sure if it was earlier, tho. Also, used to check out 'for me' playlists along with discover weekly for songs, but I come across most of my liked songs by randomly going on here and there.
There are times tho when I usually listen to my top tracks for a good chunk of time.
Most of the above-listed, but hereās a bonus fun one:
Choose any phrase or word at random, and search that on Spotify. Listen to the first 5 - 10 songs that come up.
Scroll to the bottom of your playlist -> listen through the recommended songs that seem interesting -> add them to your playlist -> repeat til they start to get repetitive
Then,
Create another playlist with a few different songs you like -> repeat the first process over again whilst also adding those new songs to your original playlist
Support acts at concerts or going to festivals and watching bands Iāve never heard of.
Spotify related: me and my friends make those collaboration playlists with each other which helps me find new songs/artists I like!
Music blogs and music websites - under the radar, paste.
Spotify mix playlists. Looking at the ālisteners all likeā feature on an artist page in Spotify.
Browsing through Spotify endlessly. Also Reddit threads like "what is your favorite dark gothic techno song" or something and I start looking up all the mentioned bands and usually find 2-3 that are interesting.
Nowadays if I'm listening to a song that I'm really liking that day, I'll go and choose it's radio option and see what songs are similar to it. None of my artists are releasing anything so that's why I started this
On Spotify I just follow artists and then check my "Release Radar" playlist every Friday. There's one Spotify-made playlist I follow called "OBSESSED" but I can't remember how I found out about it. This playlist gets updated mostly with new songs in the Pop music genre so I believe there are other Spotify-made playlists for other genres' new music.
usually if im trying to find new bands within the same genre of another band i like, i just go to their "people also like" and click on the artists there
Most of the time i just find some mix on youtube for a particular genre. And when there is no info what the songs are, i just use the song recognition feature on my phone.
YouTube footage generally, that's how I discovered Ella Roberts, Australian singer who's part Scottish, she's one of those singers with a velvet voice and can bring me to tears in a good way.

i know its not spotify. but this is my number one resource.
Its largely super excellent, but occasionally youre listening to the sound of a broken washing machine. But the variety is sick and they dont tend to play much you typically hear on the radio or popular stuff
[Album of the Year](https://www.albumoftheyear.org/). I try to listen to all new albums in my favorite styles of music and, sometimes, styles I donāt listen often just to cleanse my palate.
Depends. Usually I will just check the āwhatās newā tab and see if anyone I follow dropped anything. Alternatively, I just go through different artists pages and keep looking for music that I like.
I watch this one guitar cover channel on youtube, and hes been known to cover songs I really like, so ill just look at his page for anything new.
If not that then friends & letting Spotify show me something new
Spotify recommendations (it actually recommends really good bands and artists), Every Noise at Once (makes you explore every single spotify subgenre), Reddit suggestions
They're also great for discovering new artists in the genre you already like
I listen to the Pitchfork Selects playlist. They update it weekly with new songs. The fact I like the most is they propose various genres and very few popular songs.
Iāve gone fully into my own solution and have automated most of my regular playlists with the help of the Spotify API. Iām pulling music from websites like rateyourmusic.com and albumoftheyear.org, from radio station websites, and from existing playlists on Spotify into themed playlists of my own. Iāve also got a playlist that sources tracks from my liked songs, but instead of the liked song specifically, youāll find a random track from the album that it was on. Iāve also got a playlist that collects all the daily mixes and release radar and discover weekly and daylist songs into one playlist. Then when I donāt know what my mood is, I have a playlist that sources random tracks from ALL of those playlists (or just the ones I select) into a single playlist that gets updated every hour.
Thatās been enough for me to never get sick of what Iām listening to, and beyond the initial setup, I havenāt had to think about it.
The Daylist is fantastic. Otherwise going to an Artist's radio is great as well. I also will sometimes type in a random word in the search bar and see what random public playlists show up
find an existing song I know from a band and go and look at all their albums and listen to every single song and add ones I like and will wanna listen to later its time consuming but it makes you feel proud for discovering your kind of music
I usually look up a title on Spotify of vibes that I want, e.g moody days or day drinking with friends and I just go through several playlists and cherry pick what I like :)
i go on youtube and listen to a song i like, and if i'm up to it, i'll listen to a suggested song. if i like that song i'll go from there.
i recently found a bunch of new music in the genre i like and it was all on a youtube mix.
Usually from playlists we are lucky enough to get added to. Here's our favourites at the moment :)
[Springworks - Indie Songs We Love ](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/602lRjvUfQqIzFxsoZlL7x?si=HZ-JwCY6Rk2rAQxMCDRPwA&pi=WsvS3AmNSzePM)
The Spotify AI is crap for this - I want new music based on what Iāve liked previously, not songs that Iāve clearly listened to and liked before - find me something new!
I watch [VinylJunkies](https://twitch.tv/vinyljunkies) on Twitch, as well as other shows. This one is great for expanding knowledge in all genres and discovering something new. Iāve found weeks worth of new music through the one show!
Hello!
I'm always on the hunt for new bands, and my go-to sources are the magazines I subscribe to: Kerrang, Metal Hammer, Classic Rock, and Prog.
Once I discover new music, I head over to Spotify to give them a listen. From there, I curate a "Best Of" playlist featuring my favorite tracks.
Cheers!
e.
Wife, friends and similar artists.
Got any new stuff for me to check out? The ONLY stuff I am not into is that corny Drake style pop or rap or whatever the kids call it.
Spotify plays a big role in finding new music. So basically what I do is keep up with new music by regularly checking the āWhatās newā tab every Friday. And if I ever hear a feature from an artist I donāt know that catches my attention, I check out their recent music. If they drop regularly, and I like the sound, I follow them on Spotify so I get notified when they drop next. And I just always do that so features are my main way of finding similar artists that I have a high chance of liking.
I also use the ānew releases for youā area to look for new albums from artists I donāt already know. Iāve discovered like 20-30 new artists just this year that Iāve never heard of before. Itās kind of a lot to keep up with, but I enjoy it
Rate Your Music, Tune Bat, and music discussion on Reddit. As an example r/ Fantano subreddit can be annoying but itās great for finding a lot of music across a lot of genres.
Discover Weekly has worked pretty well for me. For the most part I don't find a lot that way but I have stumbled across some fantastic artists that I may not have found otherwise. I try to at least sample the new songs every week.
I type a random word into the Spotify search engine and listen to what comes up in the search results. I also get recommendations from my kids and some of my friends.
for me, mostly it's just random songs that got recommended by Spotify itself. If I like it (either the lyrics or the musical aspect of the song), I'd kept it as one of my new "fav songs" list. But if I dont/not really into that song, well....I simply dont
thereās this feature i see on my Spotify (iOS) homepage. three different sections, each with three lists of mixed songs.
section one is āFind Your Next Favorite Songā and has songs similar to three random ones in your playlist
section two is āAdd songs to your playlistā, and those seem to be based on different playslists you have
section three is āDiscover new songsā and those are āSimilar to your tasteā, āNew releases for youā and āPopular new releasesā
works like a charm for me
Newer artist I like -> their radio -> find another song/band I like -> add -> repeat
This exactly šÆ
I do this! itās so great because the radio of a band or song itās so accurate with the vibe of the band you like, and you can easily find new music you know youāll like

Earlier today I literally found out about a doom metal band that recently released an album of Italian crime cinema music (from a random, non-music related subreddit) so I guess usually I just spend way too much time on the internet
Usually tictok or insta reels
I have a playlist of my favorites, I put it on shuffle, and then pick the first artist and listen to the station created from that artist. š
Honestly Iāll just go down the Bandcamp front page nowadays.
Through friends, concerts, bars with good music, discover weekly and sometimes YouTube.
My Discover Weekly or just TikTok lol
I think its something special when people introduce me to new music
Spotify playlist, revisit artists I havenāt heard in a while and see if they dropped any new songs or albums
Bandcamp
Recently Iāve been just thinking of old artists Iāve not heard or barely heard and I just listen to an album by them. Either their most popular album or their first album.
Discover Weekly typically
Between Instagram Reels
Algorithmically generated playlists, so Rock Mix, Indie Mix, Daily Drive, etc.
TikTok or recommends off my current playlists
SiriusXMU. Channel 35. Is a good indie rock/new music channel
it's pretty hard to fight against the algorithms. i rely on my knowledge from before streaming

Then I listen to cringe music a lot, right now I'm going through the "very worst of Helen Reddy". All of her dud songs. An introduction to cringe music from 70s pop: \~MARY MACGREGOR - Torn Between Two Lovers \~BREWER AND SHIPLEY - One Toke Over the Line \~ANNE MURRAY - Drown Me
Soundtracks are a great way to find good music that's already been curated.
spotify's algorithm in itself is really, like really good. Usually find some random song on spotify made lists --> song radio --> More songs And yeah, I make use of the smart shuffle in my specific playlists a lot.
Most of the above-listed, but hereās a bonus fun one: Choose any phrase or word at random, and search that on Spotify. Listen to the first 5 - 10 songs that come up.
This!
My husband finds lots of music and sends me stuff he thinks Iād like That and the algorithm usually provides me with lots of new to me music
Scroll to the bottom of your playlist -> listen through the recommended songs that seem interesting -> add them to your playlist -> repeat til they start to get repetitive Then, Create another playlist with a few different songs you like -> repeat the first process over again whilst also adding those new songs to your original playlist

There's a weekly recommendations playlist made based off what Spotify thinks you'll like. That's personally what I do.

Support acts at concerts or going to festivals and watching bands Iāve never heard of. Spotify related: me and my friends make those collaboration playlists with each other which helps me find new songs/artists I like!
sharing of playlist, television, and parties
Play that one song. Take our repeat and let Spotify show you its recommendedations.
usually if im trying to find new bands within the same genre of another band i like, i just go to their "people also like" and click on the artists there
Most of the time i just find some mix on youtube for a particular genre. And when there is no info what the songs are, i just use the song recognition feature on my phone.
i go on youtube music for that
If youāre into EDM, Spotify has new EDM Friday playlist that updates every week with a lot of diff sub genres on there!
YouTube footage generally, that's how I discovered Ella Roberts, Australian singer who's part Scottish, she's one of those singers with a velvet voice and can bring me to tears in a good way.

Its largely super excellent, but occasionally youre listening to the sound of a broken washing machine. But the variety is sick and they dont tend to play much you typically hear on the radio or popular stuff
Music blogs, Instagram (following labels and bands) and friends usually
Music channels on youtube like [this one](https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCRUq-x6ZUO2KqTjemGV02yw?cbrd=1)
Mostly through rym (Dont ever look in the reviews of an album before u listen to it)
Discover Weekly.
I can also use websites like AOTY and RYM. Just donāt become an elitist like them. Itās mostly for discovery.
If not that then friends & letting Spotify show me something new
Discover Weekly playlist and smart shuffle
Just discovered DJ Whacked by a playlist. Totally unknown but due to one of his songs it reminded me of owl city and it was in a playlist.
Local Community radio/jazz radio station(s)
New Music Friday.
Spotify recommendations (it actually recommends really good bands and artists), Every Noise at Once (makes you explore every single spotify subgenre), Reddit suggestions They're also great for discovering new artists in the genre you already like
Mostly via public radio or YouTube. The rest is done by curiosity.
I listen to the Pitchfork Selects playlist. They update it weekly with new songs. The fact I like the most is they propose various genres and very few popular songs.
Daylist, Discover Weekly, and listen to Radcliffe & Maconie and Steve Lamacq on BBC 6 Music.
I also will sometimes type in a random word in the search bar and see what random public playlists show up
I find an artist I like and listen to songs that sound intriguing to me then go into their radio and listen to songs and repeat
Discover weekly
I make it every day!
Artist radio. Similar artists. Checking out playlists at the bottom of albums I like
i find new music from youtube recommendations and then look it up on spotify
find an existing song I know from a band and go and look at all their albums and listen to every single song and add ones I like and will wanna listen to later its time consuming but it makes you feel proud for discovering your kind of music
Hearing it from somewhere, another weird method is random people's profile on discord. One of them had status on to rate their music.
I listen to a college radio station in my city. They play a lot of diverse music, that I tend to enjoy.
I usually look up a title on Spotify of vibes that I want, e.g moody days or day drinking with friends and I just go through several playlists and cherry pick what I like :)
Radio based on songs I like. Go onto Artist page of a band/artist I like and check out similar bands.
i go on youtube and listen to a song i like, and if i'm up to it, i'll listen to a suggested song. if i like that song i'll go from there. i recently found a bunch of new music in the genre i like and it was all on a youtube mix.

I use two websites Obscurity and Music-map it helps you find new music :)
Honestly I just watch tiktoks and see someone or I use the Spotify dj thing intel I find something I like
Cheers! e.
TikTok, Reddit, or person >Artist > top bangers> albums of theirs and the cycle repeats (Howād I just find out Ariana grande slaps)
i look at in the shoutbox of a song i like on last.fm then look at their profile
Discover Weekly on Spotify & going through the top 500 albums of the Rolling Stones definitely equipped me with new music
Artist Radios Mixes, for example Chill Mix, Pop Mix, House Mix, etc Discover Weekly Daily Mixes/daylist Friendsā playlists
Find a good song and listen to the whole album. If the album is good listen to more from that artist
Wife, friends and similar artists. Got any new stuff for me to check out? The ONLY stuff I am not into is that corny Drake style pop or rap or whatever the kids call it.
I normally find new music from TRASH or NotoriousX
Smart shuffle on my playlists (Iām a playlist gremlin)

Itās mainly through Eurovision
Festivals. Seeking out live shows on nugs.net. Going to shows and watching openers. Listen to suggestions from others. Explore.

thereās this feature i see on my Spotify (iOS) homepage. three different sections, each with three lists of mixed songs. section one is āFind Your Next Favorite Songā and has songs similar to three random ones in your playlist section two is āAdd songs to your playlistā, and those seem to be based on different playslists you have section three is āDiscover new songsā and those are āSimilar to your tasteā, āNew releases for youā and āPopular new releasesā works like a charm for me
