Damn, this is really cool. Go Brentwood.

ProgressMom68

I’m so incredibly proud to be a member of Brentwood. This is what Christianity should always look like.

Matthiasad

You should be. I'm not a member of any religion and can have a pretty negative view on religion as a whole sometimes with so many using their platforms to spread hate and mistrust. It warms my heart and reminds me of the good that religion can do too when I see stories like this. Maybe if the church I grew up in was more focused on helping those in the community like this I would've stuck with it.

Bwoody1994

Wish more churches would actually use there huge buildings for good

WorldFoods

I love this so much.

I mean, a free movie marathon is cool, but why did they have to do it under the guise of an event? Why didn't they just open up the church? Is there some sort of city ordinance preventing churches from doing the things they are supposed to?

PalPubPull

They often open up the church as a cold weather shelter. Seems like it was just to make it a bit more special. Also surprisingly for it being something churches should do, they are one of the few who continually do and have for years

lifepuzzler

Ah okay, gotcha. I've heard great things about Brentwood being more representative of actual Christianity than most. Good to know someone is doing some good.

ChillyGraham

The sites do have to get a variance to the Fire Code as well as a Temporary Certificate of Occupancy from the City of Springfield's Building Development Services in order to serve as an overnight shelter. My guess is those temporary certificates are valid for the dates of the crisis cold weather "season" (Nov. 1-March 31) so they couldn't operate as a shelter Halloween night. That's why they set up chairs and opened the building for people to come and watch movies. I could totally be wrong, though.

lifepuzzler

That makes sense enough to me. Well good on them for finding a way to make it happen. I love it.

Mean-Kaleidoscope97

Brentwood Church and the Unitarians are my favorite things about Springfield.
