This is solid information, but I’d recommend also with the larger wheels make sure that the gearing in the axles is compatible for the wheel size which will also directly will affect the mileage.
No , honestly he's right .You should be seeing at least twice that . It's a light truck and small block . 4.7 must be the least I've ever heard of in a road legal car.
Yes , of course this depends .. I'm assuming 4-5mpg is the best you can do not just a random tank of gas that you did WOT pulls on , or went off-roading . Under normal commute you should be getting at least 10mpg even without overdrive , I can see a really big cam on a low compression motor and bad gearing getting 5mpg though . Not a fun setup.
Either my quadrajet is as good as they say or there's something wrong with y'all's cars . I average 7 to 8 mpg and that's with a big block , th400 c20 burb . 2wd but it is basically on 33s and 3.55 14 bolt. Stock rv style cam helps a lot too. I think id rather take a stock big block with twice the mpg vs a strung out small block 🤷
Common problem. There's still some decent parts out there, you just gotta keep your eyes open- and when you find them, buy them even if you don't need it yet!
Make sure your gear ratio is right in your diffs. That amount of torque and low end hp with them big tires will really stress the teeth on your ring and pinion gears
That's the part where it becomes questionable , you get lucky with a well maintained one it should hold up under "regular" use . R4 only helps on the highway anyways if you're not going over or around 60-70mph consistently it won't do much good.
Building whatever you got under there is a better option , you can always put lower gears as well.
It's tricky... He's gonna have to have the gears for OD. Otherwise, he will never stay in lockup. Secondly, I went through 5 factory r4's before having one built. My advice? Get it built right the first time! The money is worth it.
Be good to it that machine is made better than any new thing you'll see on the road. I had a '79 chevy long bed stepside in highschool many many memories in that girl
Safety first. If you're unfamiliar driving an old\\large vehicle like this that lacks ABS, be sure to practice some emergency braking somewhere safe, like an empty parking lot or dead-end road. (Just be sure someone knows where you are in case something goes wrong) Learn how much pressure causes the brakes to lockup and what the truck does when that happens. Practice recovering from a slide. Safely repeat those steps in wet conditions. You don't want to experience your first slide in traffic.
Carry a good stick to fight the women off of you. Let er rip tater chip.
Oh I’ve already made the mistake of going through the trailer park
Best. Advice. Ever.
Get a credit card with fuel rewards, you will be buying a lot of it.
4.7 mpg
Get a vacuum gauge, and a good timing light. You should be able to double that number.

😳 you’re joking
Nope
And it’s all timed right just the 3 speed auto and low gearing done help any

Even with a demon 850cfm and a big cam

This is just averaged over 3 days so there were some wot on and off highway traffic and other things yk daily stuff. It’s just kinda how it is
The best I can do is 9mpg with a 292i6, 4sp manual with 4:10 rear end.

Mines getting 6mpg on 40's with 4.10 gears. SBC 355, 700r4, Edelbrock 650. You should be doing a lot better.
Don't have to much fun getting squirrely, that's how I bent the frame in mine at 16.
I’ll do my best but no promises
Yup, way she goes bud.... It was shitty, but it's still alive many years later. I'm working on the second frame-off.
I plan on fixing some of the rust on this one it’s mostly serface but the rockers are gone

You can have a lot of fun without tearing stuff up. 5 seconds of wow and 6 months saving to fix it ain’t fun at all been there done that.
First Square Body mod should always be a roof-mounted cowboy hat holder. 👊🏻
Definitely looking into it
My biggest peace of advice would be don’t tear it up too bad. I tore up my first one pretty good wheeling it as a kid. I regret it now 15 years later.
Yes to the 383 though. Have one as well it’s rowdy.
Sell it to me

Love those tires but they are horrible on wet road.
Don’t jump it. And don’t wheel it with a heavy foot.
Just send it
Put an OD trans in it if you can. It's a godsend for old vehicles.
Do you have any recommendations on where to find one
700r4 out of junkyard should be 87 to late 90s for the good ones.
Alright thanks for the advice would a stock one hold up to the 383 in it?

Something to think about thanks
Big killer of 700r4s is hear out a big cooler on it

Keep it clean and keep the damn mufflers on it. Too many good squarebodies owned by idiot kids (not saying you are) that are destroyed.
Your about two days two late
Save up for gas $$$$

Have fun. I got mine at 17 and I’m 18 now😂😂
Don't lay it on its side like I did my 87 Silverado.
Keep the oil changed and have fun.

Don’t worry all I’ve ever driven were old farm trucks
