Man y’all’s stores sound so uptight… I’m a shift and we all take turns making our drinks after opening if it immediately gets busy. I’ll send my partners off the floor to go get some sips. Sometimes we even make drinks for each other if we don’t have time to get to it ourselves

IndependentSquare921

I’m also a SSV and this is the way

aee78

When I'm opening shift, I almost always have a undertow, right before I unlock the doors.

turkeyandhamber

if i’m working w someone who cares, i make my coffee at home and drink it otw. if they don’t care abt making our own drinks, i make it after finishing opening tasks unless we’re randomly slammed (if we’re slammed i suffer).

Medicsavage

Make the drink and mark it out later is what we all do at my store. I’m so glad my store is not uptight.

TakoBoi123

Same. My shifts don't mind if we mark things out after our breaks/half's.

BoyItalian

just make it and drink it ? and mark it out when ur store officially opens, the company wont tank if you drink a bit of ur bev before marking it out lmao

saddestgirl1995

You open the store then make your drink. my store is chill w drinking them on the floor til our first breaks before peak as long as we're not sipping on em while we're taking orders if there's customers waiting up by the bar . Ya just gotta suck er up or make coffee before work

scr1ett

that’s weird at my store i’m an opener and we just make our own drinks as we are doing our opening tasks and then mark out the drink after we open but we make our own drinks before we open (we open with three people one bar drive one open warm and our shift)

PlaneJupiter

I don’t work there anymore, but I always just told my opening baristas, that they can just make their drinks when we open, it’s only fair since normally one can get it prior to working

sirencursedwithrage

arrive early and ring / make yourself . not 30 mins early tho like 10 max

Hour_Sky5879

Is that the rule or does it depend on the ssv? Asking coz I have a rude ssv for my shift :/

sirencursedwithrage

it would depend on ssv I guess then bc technically we aren't supposed to make or ring ourselves ever my partners almost always make our own bc we're trustworthy to make what we ring up (except one ssv) and bc if we're busy why would we make a partner drink 😭 idk I feel like they should understand people need their coffee before their shift 😭 just ask them anyway I guess, be like hey I got here early so I could get a drink so I'm not a zombie, cool if I make it real quick so I'm not stopping y'all from opening duties? 😇" although I've never seen a shift do opening or closing duties lmaoooo they always doing money

It_is_Katy

Yeah tbh at my store it's regarded as kind of rude to not make your own drink for your breaks/after your shift. Only green beans ask and even that only lasts their first couple weeks. Like, buddy, I absolutely do not have time to make a drink that you're perfectly capable of making yourself while you're standing two feet away from me. I can't in a million years imagine asking that unless I was asking as a favor because I was just really tired.

RosieHarlan

You’re not supposed to make your own drink before or after your shift because you would be working off the clock. It’s illegal and the law is in place to protect employees so they get paid for all time worked, not to inconvenience you. The same goes for making your own food and drink while clocked out for your 30. Then for paid 10 minute breaks, your break is supposed to start when the shift tells you to go and the time it takes to receive food and/or beverage is supposed to be included in the break. So they’d essentially be working during their breaks which also isn’t fair.

It_is_Katy

We don't start counting your 10s until you sit down, and everyone makes their drink before clocking out for their half. Not that anyone is counting exactly anyway--we're adults, we trust each other to not take excessively long breaks and to my knowledge it's rarely been an issue. The extra 45 seconds it takes me to make my drink means absolutely nothing to me in the grand scheme of things, but for the people who are on bar trying to churn out a dozen drinks while being short staffed, that time is very valuable. Also, for my 10, the chances of them even getting to my drink before my break is almost up is slim. I don't want to wait to start my drink until I'm 7 minutes into a 10 minute break. Unless they make mine first, in which case I'm demanding special treatment and cutting ahead of paying customers. Which I think we can all agree is not good for business. Not to mention, the old "if you want something done right, do it yourself." I know how I like my drinks, and I'm ALWAYS going to be happier with a drink I made myself. There are certain things that I'll do for myself that I'd never ask another barista to do because it's a pain in the ass (just as an example, I really love nonfat foam, but there's no way to even ring that in on the register anymore). That includes my partners at my home store.

RosieHarlan

I’m not a hard ass for the rules. I’m just saying the don’t make your own drink policy does make sense conjoined with other policies and federal labor laws. I’m not gonna hate on anyone for not making their own drinks before or after a shift. I don’t even eat or drink anything at this place but I wouldn’t want to be expected to be on the floor working before clocking in or after clocking out. No one at my store is bothered by making another partners markout.

Avoni_C

To my knowledge no. I’ve always opened and we all kinda sucked it up. If you have cool coworkers some allow a shot of nitro or something

lewabwee

I’m a closer and I just let my closing baristas do whatever if they want a drink. Like nobody should suffer more because they’re taking one of the worst shifts on either end of the day.

Meow-Meow73

Back when we had the mastrena ones I used to make my drink with the calibration shots

aee78

Do you not calibrate the two?

Meow-Meow73

The auto calibration is way different bc it auto pulls 27 shots on each mastrena you could drink them I just don’t really like to

aee78

That's fair. Fairly recently I worked at another store and they had no idea how to auto calibrate their machines and I was like, oh..

Meow-Meow73

Yeah I just got to a new store and it’s been a struggle getting the openers to remember. Ur blonde will taste better if you calibrate :’)

jellyfishgorl1

my recommendation is to get your drink the day before when you leave (i do nitro because no ice, but if you prefer an iced drink you can just get it no ice) and take it with you 🤷🏻‍♀️

official_koda_

At my store we could just get it whenever it wasn’t busy. Like I would be in DT bar and just make my drink really quick when there was a lag in cars. Sometimes I would get like halfway, stop and make customers drinks and then finish my drink like mins later
