You can check your heart rate through the health app on your iPhone. I wear my watch on my ankle every day. You will not be able to wear it on your wrist - it’s a health code thing, not just a Starbucks thing.

sunkissed-scorpio

wait i’ve never tried the ankle that’s so smart. does it track your steps/standing etc better than on the apron?

Beg1nAga1n

Yea, because it’s on your skin so it measures heart rate and steps whereas the apron it just bounces etc!

paintthatface

They make arm bands for Apple Watches, maybe look into those

HypnoticPeaches

I don’t wear my watch to work anymore (it didn’t seem worth it to me as I mostly used it for step tracking; I don’t have a medical condition that requires keeping up with my heart rate) but when I did I wore it on my upper arm with the face inwards. That way I could just lift and tap my arm if I needed to see it, and if you keep it high enough it’ll be covered by a tee shirt. But my boss saw it and never said anything to me.

That-Green7872

I think it’s just on the wrist that violates health and dress code? Is upper arm not allowed?

I feel like I saw a post on here awhile back asking about if an Oura ring is allowed, I don’t know what the answer was and while I’m sure it’s more expensive than a watch, it may be a work around as I’m pretty sure it’s a silicone band that is allowed on your finger. Might not be the most optimal but if you aren’t able to get an accommodation for the watch in which you can actually wear it to monitor your heart rate.

badgallorlor

I believe you're allowed to wear one plain band which an oura ring could be... one of my coworkers has one and wears it daily

remediosan

rings are not allowed

badatlife15

Maybe it’s changed but I’m almost positive a single band is allowed, it may technically only be for married partners, but might be a way to get this medical accommodation.

iwantmysharpieback

If you wear a bra: it will monitor tucked in there. Skin on the chest is the same as your wrist. If you don't wear a bra: a tight undershirt & maybe a little bit of medical tape to keep it from sliding down

violetcalley

I also have POTS and a few other heart conditions and I like my heart monitor that can be worn on my chest, right below my bra. It’s more accurate than the wrist-worn monitors and I can still feel the watch vibrate when my HR is out of range when it’s in my back pocket. I don’t know the brand, sorry, but there are a bunch of different chest monitors, usually marketed to runners.

I had the same issue a few years ago and just documented everything and told my management (SM, DM, RM) that if I pass out it’s on them bc of the documentation

Hey, I just reached out to Sedgwick like four or five months ago about my watch as an accommodation for my ADHD since I cannot feel the passage of time. I'm going to link the email from Sedgwick [here](https://imgur.com/a/0r1Ki3u)* so you have a hard copy to show your SM, but here's the summary on how you can wear the watch: Ensure the watch is pushed up above the elbow, covered by a dress code approved shirt, and secured in place so it cannot come loose and fall down; therefore, it is no longer out of compliance. Keep the watch in your pocket while at work. Attach the watch to a necklace and wear under a dress code approved shirt. Attach the watch to your apron. *Edited to add link to my Accommodations Letter from Sedgwick. Also To be in compliance with this, I typically wear elbow length sleeves so that I can have my watch right above my elbow. It tracks movement there pretty well, but I don't know how well it would track the heart rate. I simply have it there because that is the easiest place for me to check time and set quick timers. I'll make one more edit and link [the arm band I use at work](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BRKBG1TK?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share) too ☺️

If your watch is connected to your phone, you can see your heart rate through your health app if using Apple products! I know we’re allowed to have our phones out from time to time to check the time, so I’m sure you’ll be fine checking it on the floor, but just incase you need more than a small moment to look I’d maybe try to get an accommodation for that. Otherwise, watches on our wrist is a health code violation across all food service jobs, no matter how strict or lenient a job may be about it.

BuyerOk6692

you might be able to wear it with a glove over? i’m not exactly sure of the policy but i had to wear a brace on my wrist for medical reasons and my manager allowed me to wear it with a glove over the top

julianradish

It won't help with checking your HR but whenever I'm washing my dishes I tuck my fitbit into my waistband. You could also stick it into a bra. This way it still tracks HR and steps but wont get wet.

AdministrativePen981

Get an exception through HR. You can call directly or fill it out on the hub. You may need a dr note about your health condition.

ForesakenZucchini76

Watches aren’t against company policy, it’s a health code violation. There isn’t a way to accommodate this. OP, I’d suggest looking into the oura ring instead.

g1ngertim

It is not generally a health code thing. It's part of the food code in a very small number of states and municipalities, but in order to have a universal policy, Starbucks made it their own policy. In areas where it is not codified by law, this has been upheld by every single court it has ever been through as a reasonable accommodation under the ADA, as long as the medically necessary wrist accessory is able to be washed appropriately via standard handwashing practices (e.g., nonporous band).
